Development of Real-Time Quality Evaluation of Friction Welding by Acousitc Emission : Report 1 ABSTRACT : According as the friction welding has been increasingly applied in manufacturing various machine components because of its significant economic and technical advantages, one of the important concerns is the reliable quality monitoring method for a good weld quality with both joint strength and toughness in the process of its production. However no reliable nondestructive test method is available at present to determine the weld quality particularly in process of production. So this paper presents an experimental examination and quantitative analysis for the real-time evaluation of friction weld quality by acoustic emission, as a new approach which attempts finally to develop an on-line quality monitoring system design for friction welds using AE techniques. As one of the important results, it was confirmed, through this study, that AE techniques can be reliably applied to evaluating the friction weld qualify with 100% joint strength, as the cumulative AE counts occurring during welding period were quantitatively correlated with reliability at 95% confidence level to the joint strength of welds. Real-Time Evaluation of Automatic Production Quality Control for Friction Welding Machine : Report 2 Abstract : Both in-process quality control and high reliability of the weld is one of the major concerns in applying friction welding to the economical and qualified mass-production. No reliable nondestructive monitoring method is available at present to determine the real-time evaluation of automatic production quality control for friction welding machine. This paper, so that, presents the experimental examinations and statistical quantitative analysis of the correlation between the initial cumulative counts of acoustic emission(AE) occurring during plastic deformation period of the welding and the tensile strength of the welded joints as well as the various welding variables, as a new approach which attempts finally to develop an on-line (or real-time) quality monitoring system and a program for the process of real-time friction welding quality evaluation by initial AE cumulative counts. As one of the important results, it was well confirmed that the initial AE cumulative counts were quantitatively and cubically correlated with reliability of 95% confidence level to the joint strength of the welds, bar-to-bar (SCM4 to SUM31, SCM4 to SUM24L) and that an AE technique using initial AE counts can be reliably applied to real-time strength evaluation of the welded joints, and that such a program of the system was well developed resulting in practical possibility of real-time quality control more than 100% joint efficiency showing good weld with no micro-structural defects.

This paper deals with the development of fundamental design and manufacturing technique of hydraulic valve spool by optimizing of friction welding, the development of in-process real-time weld quality evaluation technique by acoustic emission and the evaluation of the mechanical properties and the fatigue life about the bar-to-bar dissimilar friction welded hydraulic valve spool steels.

Initial solder joint strengths of various solder pastes, such as Sn-Pb(63-37wt%), Sn-In(52-48wt%), Sn-In-Ag(77.5-20-2.5wt%), and Sn-Ag(96.5-3.5wt%) has been studied. A system that can control the solder joint interface temperature during bonding process was also desined and implemented to improve solder joint integrity.

To provide better understanding of a solder joint design criteria, mathematical models have been developed to calculate the shape of the solder fillets formed between the pad and lead. The effects of parameters such as solder volume and pad dimensions are described with this model. In this study, a systematic way to determine the design criteria of the SMT from the predicted 3D solder joint profile is proposed. The solder joint profile is calculated using the available 3D FEM code which minimizes the system energy due to the surface tension and gravity. The solder joint profiles of gullwing-type lead such as QFP and SOP are calculated for design parameters, and acceptable ranges are obtained. The result shows that the pad length is the most significant factor compared with the pad width and pad area.

This paper deals with determining the proper friction welding condition and analyzing mechanical in of friction welded joints of sintered carbide tool materials (SKNM50 for the blade part of press punch) to alloy steel (SCM440 for the shank part of press punch), the alloy steel to aluminum(A6061 for the interlayer material between the blade part and the shank) and sintered carbide tool materials to aluminum. And also acoustic emission test will be carried out during fiction welding to evaluate the weld quality.

Five cast gamma titanium aluminides, Ti-45~48%Al-2%Nb-2%Cr (nominal composition in at. %), were laser welded and their weld cracking susceptibilities were evaluated. Laser power, traversing rate and preheat temperature were systematically varied to generate a series of welds exhibiting a wide range of cooling rate (
$100^{\circ}C/s-10,000^{\circ}C/s$ ). As Al content increased and the weld cooling rate decreased, solidification cracking susceptibility increased while solid-state cracking susceptibility decreased. Through laser beam energy input control and preheat, it was determined possible to produce high quality laser welds. -
In order to investigate characteristics of surface fatigue crack propagation from a pit shaped surface defect which frequently exists near weld joints, SS400 steel with thickness of 12mm, which generally used for structure members, was submerged-arc welded with butt type and machined for both surface. The weld joints were devided into 5 regions, weld metal, boundary between heat affected zone (HAZ), HAZ, boundary between HAZ and base metal, and base metal. Specimens from each region were machined for a pit shaped initial surface defect with aspect ratio of 2. characteristics of surface fatigue crack por pagation from the defect under the same loading condition were compared and discussed.
