A screw-type centrifugal pump was manufactured to carry solids primarily and its impeller has a wide flow passage. However, the effect of flow passage shape on delay of the choke due to entrained air has not been clarified yet. Moreover, because its impeller has a particular shape, only few studies have tried to clarify the pump performance and details of internal flow pattern of that pump. For that reason, we carried out the pump performance experiment under air-water two-phase flow condition with different impeller tip clearances, pump rotational speeds and void fractions by using a small screw-type centrifugal pump designed to acquire basic data. In a general centrifugal pump, it was reported that loss of pump head from single-phase flow to the choke due to air entrainment new the best efficiency point was large. However, the loss near the best efficient point in a screw-type centrifugal pump became less than that in a general centrifugal pump.

LabVIEW is mostly preferred to use in experiment, measurement and control as one of the useful thing in America and Europe. So, We tried performance experiment of a single-stage closed-type centrifugal pump by using the LabVIEW. The pump rpm and the shaft torque are measured by rpm sensor and torque sensor The test pump's maximum rpm, head, kW are 1,750, 13m, and 1.5kW, respectively The casing is made up with transparency acrylic for confirmation the flow patterns. We installed experimental equipment for air water two phase flow. This paper tries to analyze the single-phase flow characteristics through this air water two phase flow experimental apparatus. The performance results of a single-stage closed-type centrifugal pump satisfied reappearance and coincide well with head and coefficients according to the change of rpm.

In the current study the effects on pump performances of a conventional centrifugal pump for Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid were experimentally studied. The study aimed to compare the pump characteristics for Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid. The working fluids are water, aqueous sugar solution, glycerin solution, muddy solution and pulp solution. The pump characteristics with high viscosity fluids were different. The operating efficiency for the sugar and glycerin solutions were decreased to
$8.1\%$ and$12.9\%$ than that of water. The head reductions of the muddy solution for different concentration ratios were decreased to$7.97\%,\;15.11\%$ and$24.87\%$ than that of water And the head reductions of the pulp solution for different concentration ratios were decreased to$11.87\%,\;19.79\%$ md$36.81\%$ than that of water. -
In the present work, characteristics of an axial flow fan haying distorted inlet flow produced by hub cap are investigated. The distorted inlet flow is generated by the shape of hub cap installed in front of the axial flow fan. Two different cases of hub cap geometry are analyzed to verify the influence of flow distortion. The flow fields are analyzed numerically by solving steady form of three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes equation and standard k-
$\epsilon$ model is used for a turbulence closure. The results obtained from the numerical simulation are compared to those from experimental measurements. It is found that the overall performance of the axial flow fan is increased by reducing the flow distortion at the hub. Detailed characteristics of the flow fields of two different geometric conditions are also discussed. -
Comprehensive investigation on the outlet's geometric shapes of a centrifugal blower with higher inlet resistance than an atmospheric pressure is carried out for improvements of its performance. Most unwanted behaviors of such blower are pulsating flows because of unbalance between inflows and outflows in a scroll casing. In order to reduce this undesirable phenomenon a triump is made for both the shape of outlet duct and an accessory structure inserted in the outlet port of the blower. The modification on the shape is concerned with the contraction of cross sectional area and the attached structure is for an intentional obstruction to cause a flow resistance. The details of the modification are examined for different cases and results. The methodologies for the work are performance evaluations including noise level and velocity measurements with PIV Consequently, the performance of improved system is close to that of the system operating with atmospheric pressure at the inlet.

The cross-flow fan which is used for air-conditioner indoor units were studied experimentally. The recent trend shows that the room air-conditioners need to be good-looking. According to the visual design concepts the intake regions of the fan can vary, which leads to the loss of the performance and the increase of the noise of the fan. In order to optimize the performance of the fan and minimize the aerodynamic noise for the system, the performance characteristics and the noise of the cross-flow fan have been investigated at the various conditions of the intake region of the unit.

In this study, the flow and thermal performance of the heat sink and fan-sink were experimentally studied to predict the operating condition of the fan-sink. The experiments of the flow and thermal resistance of the heat sink with various inlet blockage, which were occurred by the shapes of the axial fans, were conducted for the proof of the effects of the inlet blockages. The greater the inlet blockage of the heat sink, the higher the pressure drop and lower the thermal resistance of the heat sink will be. The operating point of the fan-sink was predicted by the pressure drop curve with the inlet blockage, which was corresponded to the selected fan and the fan performance curve, and verified by the performance test of the fan-sink. The predicted operating point of the fan-sink had good agreement with the result of the performance test of the fan-sink within
$0.7\%$ of the volume flow rates. Measured thermal resistance of the fan-sink was equivalent to that of the heat sink with the same inlet blockage of the fan-sink. It was shown that the heat transfer characteristics of the heat sink were influenced by the flow interaction between the selected fan and the heat sink. To improve the thermal resistance of the heat sink, it is necessary to consider appropriate flow patterns of the fan outlet entering into the heat sink. -
To numerically construct the sound fields by a plenum fan mostly found in Air-Handling Unit (AHU), the Kirchhoff-BEM approach was applied to the near-field data of a turbo fan. The scattering effects were found to be significant by the plenum box structure for high-frequency components of source. The directivity petterns and sound pressure levels were also dependent upon the helmholts number which must be considered of the design stage for sound reduction program.

This paper presents modeling and simulation of the bump foil bearings with consideration of the elastic behavior of the foil and gas compressibility. Heshmat had originally introduced the simple compliance model to estimate the EHL(elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication) performance. But this approach can not consider the deflection of top foil at the edge of bearing, so model is insufficient to analyze in case that the eccentricity ratio is greater than I. So the top foil is considered as a simple beam model supported by linear spring elements, and the bump foil deflection can be simple compliance model. The EHL calculations are performed for convention rigid type, classical foil type, variable pitch type and double bump type toil bearings. This paper presents that 2nd or 3rd generation bearings have excellent performance in every speeds.

Micro turbine is an electric power generating system using a gas turbine whose rated power is under 300kW, and it is featured as a small, efficient. maintenance free and environment-friendly system. Air foil bearing has several advantages over conventional bearings for micro turbine because it is oilless and non-contact. Recently, air foil bearings for high temperature over
$500^{\circ}C$ has been developed for the application of 65kW micro turbine system. In this paper, the development and current status are summarized in detail. -
The micro turbo generator is new portable power source based on the Brayton cycle, which consists of a compressor, a turbine, a generator, and a combustion chamber. In this paper, the thermodynamic analysis was performed to find the required condition for hundreds watts power in the micro turbo generator, and also the rotordynamic stability was predicted using the numerical analysis of air foil bearings which support the micro turbo generator. By experimental works, the rotordynamic stability of the micro turbo generator with foil bearings was verified. While various transient dynamic situation, the micro turbo generator had stable performances. From the result, it was demonstrated that air foil bearings could be adapted to the micro turbo generator as a excellent lubrication element.

In this study, a rotor blade of a Curtis turbine is investigated. Bezier curve is generally used to define the profile of turbine blades. However, this curve gives a feature of global control, which is not proper to a supersonic impulse turbine blade. Thus, a blade design method is developed by using B-spline curve so that local control is possible to obtain an optimized blade section. To design a Curtis turbine blade section systematically, the blade section has been changed by varying three design parameters using central composite design method. Flow analyses have been carried out for the blade sections, and the effects of design parameters are evaluated.

This study aims to analyze operating performance of a micro gas turbine with the aid of detailed measurements of various system parameters. In addition to embedded measurements, parameters such as exhaust temperatures, engine inlet temperatures and fuel flow rates are measured Variations in measured data and estimated performance parameters are analyzed. Those data are processed to calculate losses along the power transmission line and the net gas turbine performance (power and efficiency based on the gas turbine shaft end) is isolated from the overall system performance. On the basis of the measured data, analytical approach is tried to estimate design characteristic and performance parameters such as component efficiencies and unmeasured temperatures.

In this study, the effect of relative position of the blade for the fixed vane has been investigated on blade surface heat transfer. The experiments were conducted in a low speed stationary annular cascade, and heat transfer of blade was examined for six positions within a pitch. Turbine test section has one stage composed of sixteen guide vanes and blades. The chord length of the tested blade is 150 mm and the mean tip clearance of the blade having flat tip is about
$2.5\%$ of the blade chord. For the detailed mass transfer measurements on the blade surfaces, a naphthalene sublimation technique was used. The inlet flow Reynolds number is fixed to$1.5{\times}10^5$ . Complex heat transfer characteristics are observed on the blade surface due to various flow characteristics, such as separation bubble, relaminarization, transition to turbulence and leakage vortices. The distributions of velocity and turbulence intensity change significantly with the relative position due to the blockage effect of the blade. This causes the variation of heat transfer patterns on the blade surface. The results show that the flow near the leading edge get highly disturbed and deflected toward the either side of the blade when the blade leading edge is positioned close to the trailing edge of the vane. Therefore, separation bubble disappears on the pressure side and overall heat transfer on the relaminarization region is increased. But, due to reduced tip gap flow at the upstream region, the effect of leakage flow on the upstream region of the blade surface is weakened. Thus, the heat transfer characteristics significantly change with the blade positions. -
We have investigated the feasibility of using differential pressure(pressure drop) of gas turbine meter to diagnose turbine performance degradation caused by mechanical wearing damage and/or dirt buildup or erosion. If the differential pressure between the upstream piping and the throat of a turine meter can be correlated to meter flow rate over the operating range of the meter, then a relatively simple differential pressure measurement in the filed might be used to detect meter performance changes. To test this method, we have conducted two experimental simulation on Straightener Integrated Type(SIT) turbine meter. One is fur dirt buildup on turbine blade, the other is for eccentricity of the blade. Results show that this method provide a reliable measure of performance degradation and is useful maintenance indicator.

MPA (Multi-Point Averaging) flow element is a new type of differential pressure (DP) flow-sensing device that was developed by Seojin Instech to improve the operating characteristics of the conventional Averaging Pilot Tube (APT) flow elements. Operating characteristics of a flowmeter in general can be defined in terms of measurement accuracy and range. Improvement of accuracy and expanding the range of flow measurement were the two main objectives of the development. To achieve these dual objectives several upstream and downstream pressure-sensing holes were placed in MPA flow element. During the course of the development it was found that certain arrangements of the pressure-sensing holes improved measurement accuracy but did not expand operating flow range of Averaging Pilot Tubes. Development tests were performed with water between Reynolds number of 50,000 and 1,000,000 in the four-inch test line at the Alden Research Laboratory, U.S.A. Purpose of this paper is to present the relationship between the various locations of the pressure-sensing holes and the performance characteristics of MPA flow element. Furthermore, the operating characteristics of the best performing MPA are compared with those of typical orifice and APT.

The Rate-of-Loading(ROL) effect of motor operated gate valves causes a decrease in the thrust delivered at a specific torque by the actuator under dynamic flow
${\Delta}$ P conditions as compared to the no-flow, static conditions. This effect needs to be studied for the quantitative evaluation of motor operated gate valve operability. This study is performed to verify the validity for the application of ROL in the evaluation of operability of motor operated gate valves for the opening stroke. The ROL is assessed on the basis of in-situ test data for the opening and closing strokes. The results show that the distribution of the ROL for the operling sake has a tendency to the negative value when DP is higher than 150psid. -
Average Bi-directional flow tube was suggested to measure single and two phase flow rate. Its working principle is similar with Pilot tube, however, it makes it possible to eliminate the cooling system which is normally needed to prevent from flashing in the pressure impulse line of Pilot tube when it is used in the depressurization condition. The suggested instrumentation was tested in the air-water vertical test section which has 80mm inner diameter and 10m length. The flow tube was installed at 120 of L/D from inlet of test section. From the test, single air and water flow rate was measured successfully. For the emasurement of two phase flow rate, Chexal drift-flux correlation was used. In the test a new correlation of momentum exchange factor was suggested. The test result shows that the suggested instrumentation using the measured void fraction and Chexal drift-flux correlation can predict the mass flow rates within
$10\%$ error of measured data. -
Average Bi-directional flow tube was suggested to measure single and two phase flow rate. Its working principle is similar with Pilot tube, however, it makes it possible to eliminate the cooling system which is normally needed to prevent from flashing in the pressure impulse line of Pilot tube when it is used in the depressurization condition. 3-dimensional steady state flow analyses using FLUENT 5.4 code were performed to validate the application of the averagebi-directional flow tube in case of water and air flow In this study, sensitivity studies have been performed to optimize the design features of the average hi-directional flow tube which can be applied for the various experimental conditions. For Re numbers above 1000, the k values are nearly constant regardless of the Re numbers and flow types and calculation results and experimental data coincides quite well. The current FLUENT calculation results suggest that linearity of the k values in various design features of the average BDFT is highly promising, which means that it is quite reasonable to select the typical design of the average BDFT for the convenience of the experimental conditions.

Water supply facilities are recently getting larger according as domestic waterworks become multi regional water supply system. Large water supply facilities generally consist of the intake pumping station, water treatment station and water supply & distribution facilities. Although pumping stations and pipeline systems are used to pump up water, it often happens pipeline damage and flooding accident by the water hammer. As a result of this study, a pumping station is guaranteed by the computer simulation and field test analysis. Therefore these are contributed safety operation in pumping station through adjustment of the pumping station safety plan, air valve and valve closing time.

The waterhammer occured when the pumps are started or stopped for the operation or tripped due to the power failure, the hydraulic transients occur as a result of the sudden change in velocity. The field tests of the waterhammer were carried out for PanGyo booster pumping station. The PanGyo pumuing station was installed booster pump of 6 sets and in-line pump of 2 sets. The main surge suppression device was equipped with the pump control valve and the surge relief valve as auxiliary. However, the pump control valve had not early controlled in the planned closing mode, and the slamming occurred to the valve of which abruptly closed during the large reverse flow. Because the pressure wave caused by the pump failure was superposed on the slam surge, the upsurge increased so extremely that the shaft of the valve was damaged. After the addition surge suppression device was equipped with air chamber. Further more in-line pump is needed surge suppression device that the pumping station acquired the safety and reliability for the pressure surge.

Scroll compressor has been used extensively for refrigeration since the early 1980's for its improved efficiency, greater reliability, smoother operation, lower noise and vibration. And also, nowadays, the scroll mechanism is used for expander even though in niche market yet. But scroll expander has not been used for high-temperature and high-pressure gas, because the continuous expansion of the gas causes a wide range of temperature distribution over the whole scroll wrap that leads to differential thermal expansion of scroll elements, which results in system vibrations, noise and efficiency losses. For the scroll expander to produce power more efficiently, all of radial and radial clearances between scroll wrap must be the same. In order to reduce differential thermal expansion in addition to improvements in thermal efficiency and specific power, we propose a scroll expander with heating structure. Heat-pipe heating structure is considered as the most effective method to heat the scroll expander at a uniform temperature. This paper includes some results of preliminary study of the scroll expander with heating structure and proposals of their systems for power generation and refrigeration.

Developed is a sludge treatment system for introducing the waste water mixture with paint sludge from the water bath of paint booth and for recycling cleaned water to paint booth after sludge separation. Floated sludge is introduced from the water surface in the bath by using floating skimmer, and is conveyed by pump to the centrifugal separator where sludge and cleaned water are separated. From the operation results of the present sludge treatment systems applied in actual paint booths, paint sludge can be separated automatically and effectively from water bath with its water content of
$60-70\%$ , and sludge-free clean water is returned to paint booth. -
The optimum condition is defined as one that best suits the purpose of flocculation; the number of small particles should decrease, while that of large particles should increase. The object of this research was to develop a new impeller and substitute for conventional flocculators. The flow characteristics of turbines and hydrofoil type flocculators in turbulent fluids were observed using a standard k-
$\epsilon$ Model and a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation program- FLUENT The experiments were performed to compare PBT(Pitched Blade Turbine) flocculator with twisted hydrofoil type flocculators for velocity distribution, and floc formation at conventional water treatment plants in Korea. As a result of the CFD solution, twisted hydrofoil types are similar to hydrofoil flocculators for flow characteristics without regard to the twisted angle, On the other hand, it was established that turbine flocculators are greater than hydrofoil flocculators with flow unevenness and dead zone formation. Twisted hydrofoil type- II (Angle$15{\~}20^{\circ}$ ) is the most proper impeller for water flocculation from this point of view with a decreasing the dead zone, maintaining of the equivalent energy distribution and a drawing up of the sedimentation substance from the bottom of the flocculation basin. -

This study presents a numerical procedure to optimize the shape of dimple surface to enhance turbulent heat transfer in rectangular channel. The response surface based optimization method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer with shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model. The dimple depth-to -dimple print diameter ratio, channel height- to- dimple print diameter ratio. and dimple print diameter-to-pitch ratio are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer coefficient and friction drag coefficient with a weighting factor. Full factorial method is used to determine the training points as a mean of design of experiment.

The present study has been performed to investigate the influences of rectangular fins on heat transfer in an impingement/effusion cooling system with crossflow. To simulate the impingement/effusion cooling system with initial crossflow, two perforated plates are placed in parallel and staggered arrangements with a gap distance of 2 times of the hole diameter. The crossflow passes between the plates, and various rectangular fins are installed on the plates. Reynolds number based on the hole diameter is fixed to 10,000 and the flow rate of crossflow is changed from 0.5 to 1.5 times of that of the impinging jet. A naphthalene sublimation method is used to obtain the heat/mass transfer coefficients on the effusion plate. Also to analyze the flow characteristics, a numerical calculation is performed. When rectangular fins are installed, the flow and heat transfer pattern is changed greatly from case without fins. In the injection hole region, the jet impinges on effusion plate without deflection and wall jet spreads symmetrically. In the effusion region, the crossflow accelerates due to the decrease of cross-sectional area in the channel. Local heat/mass transfer coefficients are enhanced significantly compared to case without fins. As the blowing ratio increases, the effect of fins against the crossflow becomes more significant and then the higher average heat/mass transfer coefficients are obtained than the case without fins.

The constant flow control valve is used to control the flow rate of heating water in the large apartment complex and buildings. It is important to have similar heating flow rate in the apartments, even though the apartment is top or bottom floors. To achieve those purposes, the constant flow control valve was developed. The performance of this control valve is effected by hole area and discharge coefficients of the cartridge holes. The discharge coefficients of orifice hole in the cartridge were testes with various sizes of holes and various flow direction in the holes. The discharge coefficients decreased as the hole size increased due to the collision at the cartridge wall of water jet. The effects of the flow direction at the hole were not significant on the discharge coefficients.

The experimental loop was designed and installed to measure the disc positions, disc back stop load and differential pressure with flow velocity for 3 inch and 6 inch swing check valves. The tests were performed at various conditions of upstream flow disturbance source and distance from the tested check valves to investigate the effect of the upstream flow conditions on the disc stability of the swing check valves. The selected disturbance sources were elbow, globe valve, and orifice. The experimental results are presented herein.
-
Swing check valves are the most common type of check valve in nuclear power plant and need to be operated property to perform their functions and to keep the valve internals stable. However, for a swing check valve disc to remain stable, the opening characteristics should be identified and the upstream flow velocity should be enough to hold the disc fully open and without motion. Thus it is necessary to develop a model for predicting the flow velocity for a given disc opening. In the present study, the disc positions with mean flow velocity were measured for 3 inch and 6 inch swing check valves. Comparison of the measurements with the existing models showed that the models underestimate the mean flow velocity for a given disc position. Therefore, the existing model for predicting swing check valve disc position was improved with the realistic disc impingement area perpendicular to the flow stream and the experimental data. The result showed that the improved model with the best estimate of kb = 0.04 predicts well the disc openings of 6 inch swing check valve, especially in the low velocity region. For better prediction of the disc opening at high flow velocity, however, it is recommended to develop a kb correlation with the disc angle.

The pressure and differential pressure(DP) transmitters are used for gas flow rate calculation on the orifice gas metering system. On site, the pressure and DP transmitters are installed in a shelter to diminish the affects of environmental change such as an ambient temperature. But there has been an argument about the effectiveness of the shelter and this brought up the necessity to verify the affects of ambient temperature. These experiments were performed to verify the ambient temperature effects as observing the output of transmitters when the ambient temperature were changed from
$-30^{\circ}C$ to$50^{\circ}C$ . The results showed that the most of transmitters were operated in the spec range of performance criteria presented by manufacturer but the rapid change of ambient temperature could cause the larger measurement error for the DP transmitter of low span than others. Therefore the pressure and DP transmitters need to be operated and controlled within the proper range of ambient temperature. -
The lock-up position of the floating ring seal affects the leakage flowrate and the stability. And it is changed depending on the operating and geometry condition. In this paper, the leakage flowrate and stability with change of the height and length were investigated by theoretical analysis and experiment. The parameter of the height and length is expressed to the b and L. The decreasing of the b resulted in the increasing of equivalent whirl frequency ratio in the experimental result at the low speed and high pressure not such as theoretical analysis. As the L increased the leakage flowrate decreased and stiffness and direct damping coefficient increased in the experimental result. That was similar to the theoretical analysis.

A low NPSH and high pressure fuel pump has been designed for a turbopump system. The fuel pump has an axial inducer and a centrifugal impeller. A meanline method has been established for the preliminary design and performance prediction of pumps at design or off-design points. KeRC carried out a model testing of the fuel pump with water as a working fluid at the reduced speed. Predicted performances by the method are shown to be in good agreement with experimental results for cavitating and non-cavitating conditions. The established meanline method can be used for the performance prediction and preliminary design of high speed pumps which have a inducer, impeller and volute. In the current study, the three dimensional viscous flow in the fuel pump was investigated through numerical computation. A modified design of the fuel pun was generated to improve pump performance by utilizing CFD results. The modified fuel pump was experimentally tested by ROTEM and KARI. The measured non-cavitating and cavitating performance showed a good agreement with designed performance.

The characteristics of the circular arc shaped multi-blade windmil are investigatedl. The prototypical windmill was tested in the laboratory at wind tunnel speeds of 5.5, 9.4m/s. and the model windmill was also tested in the laboratory, The power and torque coefficients were studied as functions of the blade section, the aspect ratio for blade diameter and windmill radius(M = 0.3, 0.5, 0.7), the number of blades and finally the tip-speed ratio. The analysis of the experimental results for the model windmill showed that there is the highest revolutions per minute(R.P.M) at the circular arc shaped multi-blade windmill having the blade number 10, aspect ratio(M = 0.7). and the results for the prototypical windmill showed that the power coefficient increased to a maximum value and then decreased again with an increase in the tip speed ratio, while the torque coefficient decreased directly with an increase in the tip speed ratio Finally, the experimental results were compared with the Savonius blade. the maximum power coefficient for the arc shaped blade was greater than for the Savonius blade and occured at a lower tip speed ratio.

In this paper, a 1MW HAWT(FIL-1000) rotor blade has been designed by BEMT(Blade Element Momentum Theory) with Prandtl's tip loss. Also, a 3-D flow and performance analysis on the FIL-1000 rotor blade has been carried out by using the 3-D Navier-Stokes commercial solver (CFX-5.7) to provide more efficient design techniques to the large-scale HAWT engineers. The rated power and itsapproaching wind velocity at design point (TSR=7.5) are 1MW and 9.99m/s respectively. The rotor diameter is 54.5m and the rotating speed is 26.28rpm. Airfoils such as FFA W-301, DU91-W-250, DU93-W-210, NACA 63418, NACA 63415 consist of the rotor blade from hub to tip. Recent CFX version, 5.7 was adopted to simulate 3-D flow field and to analyze the performance characteristics of the rotor blade. Entire mesh node number is about 730,000 and it is generated by ICEM-CFD to achieve better mesh quality The predicted maximum power occurringat the design tip speed ratio is 931.45kW. Approaching to the root, the inflow angle becomes large, which causesthe blade to be stalled in the region. Therefore, k-

Tip clearance of centrifugal compressor affects the performance. Larger tip clearance results in lower efficiency. What really affects the performance is the running tip clearance, not the cold tip clearance. When the compressor is operating, blade strain and the pressure difference between impeller backplate and hub affects the running tip clearance. This paper describes measured running tip clearance and its effects on the performance of centrifugal compressor. Cold tip clearance before operation was 0.4 mm and running tip clearance varied from 0.86 mm to 0.25 mm with impeller exit pressure. As the pressure at impeller exit increases, the routing tip clearance tends to decreases. The target running tip clearance for compressor at
$100\%$ speed was 0.3 mm and it turned out to be exactly 0.30 mm from experiment. -
A three-dimensional computation was conducted to understand effects of the inlet boundary layer thickness on the loss mechanism in a low-speed axial compressor operating at the design condition(
${\phi}=85\%$ ) and near stall condition(${\phi}=65\%$ ). At the design condition, the flow phenomena such as the tip leakage flow and hub comer stall are similar independent of the inlet boundary layer thickness. However, when the axial compressor is operating at the near stall condition, the large separation on the suction surface near the casing is induced by the tip leakage flow and the boundary layer on the blade for thin inlet boundary layer but the hub corner stall is enlarged for thick inlet boundary layer. These differences of internal flows induced by change of the boundary layer thickness on the casing and hub enable loss distributions of total pressure to be altered. When the axial compressor has thin inlet boundary layer, the total pressure loss is increased at regions near both casing and tip but decreased in the core flow region. In order to analyze effects of inlet boundary layer thickness on total loss in detail, using Denton's loss models, total loss is scrutinized through three major loss categories in a subsonic axial compressor such as profile loss, tip leakage loss and endwall loss. -
The effects of flow interaction between mainstream and shrouded cavity leakage flow in an axial-flow compressor on aerodynamic losses are experimentally and numerically examined. A fraction of mainstream is Ingested in the downstream cavity and travelled in the shrouded cavity along the direction opposite to the mainstream. This leakage flow is caused by adverse pressure gradient along the blade passage. Then it is entrained through the upstream cavity near mid-pitch and interacts with the mainstream. As a result, the convection flow angle with respect to the blade chord is reduced i.e. underturning This underturned flow results in an increase in size of secondary flow formed near the suction side of the blade as well as its magnitude. Consequently, this causes pronounced increase in overall aerodynamic losses compared to the blading without shrouded cavity, leading to
$9\%$ decrease in pressure rise through the single stage of the stators. -
The optimization of a blade sweep for a transonic axial compressor rotor (NASA rotor 37) has been performed using a response surface method and a Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes (RANS) flow simulation. Two shape variables of the rotor blade, which are used to define a blade sweep, are introduced to increase an adiabatic efficiency. Data points for response evaluations have been selected by D-optimal design, and linear programming method has been used for an optimization on a response surface. The result shows that the adiabatic efficiency is increased to about 1 percent compared to that of the reference shape of the rotor blade. Relatively high increasement of the adiabatic efficiency is obtained between 20 and 60 percent span. In the present study, backward swept blade is more effective to increase the adiabatic efficiency In the axial compressor rotor.

Four design candidates for a 1.4MW class partial admission turbine have been chosen from a Preliminary design process. Their performance were estimated through the 3-D numerical analyses using a frozen rotor method. In order to select the optimum design, each flow analysis result was compared with others. Flow characteristics in the passages and some types of losses induced by shocks and wakes were found from calculation results. Based on these calculations, a new rotor blade was redesigned and compared with previous one through flow analysis.

The influence of wake flow on a flat-plate blade having different shapes near the hailing edge has been investigated in this paper. Two different shapes near the trailing edge namely the pressure surface cutting (TP) and the suction surface cutting (TS) have been used. The calculation has been performed for two different angles of attack (a =10 and 15 degree) in both the cases. RANS equations have been solved using SST-model as a turbulence closure. Cp and CL values obtained for TS are higher compared to those obtained for TP. Also, the vorticity distribution obtained in case of TS is stronger as compared to that obtained in the case of TP The Karmann Vortex is observed in both the cases but it is more clear in TS case. It is found that in the case of TS, flow separation does not occur upto the trailing edge on both the suction and the pressure sides of the blade while in the case of TP, the flow separateson the pressure surface near the trailing edge of the flat-plate blade.

Large eddy simulation(LES) methodology used to model isothermal non-swirling and swirling flows in a model gas turbine combustor. The LES solver was implemented on parallel computer consisting 16 processors. To verify the capability of LES code and characterize swirling flow, the results was compared with that of Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) using k -
$\epsilon$ model as well as experimental data. The results showed that the LES and RANS well predicted the mean velocity field of a non-swirling flow. Specially, the LES showed a very excellent prediction performance for the corner recirculation zone. In swirling flow, comparing with the results obtained by RANS, LES showed a better performance in predicting the mean axial and azimuthal velocities, and the central recirculation zone. Finally, unsteady phenomena of turbulent flow was examined with LES methodology. -
This work presents the Thermal Hydraulic analysis has been performed for a 19-pin wire-spacer fuel assembly using three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. SST model is used as a turbulence closure. The whole fuel assembly has been analyzed for one period of the wire-spacer using periodic boundary condition at inlet and outlet of the calculation domain. The overall results far a preliminary calculation show a good agreement with the experimental observations. It has been found that the major unidirectional flows are the axial velocity in sub-channels and the peripheral sweeping flows and the velocities are found to be following a cyclic path of period equal to the wire-wrap pitch. The temperature is found to be maximum in the central region and also, there exist a radial temperature gradient between the fuel rods. The major advantage of performing this kind of analysis is the prediction of thermal-hydraulic behavior of a fuel assembly with much ease.

The purpose of this study is localization of safety relief valves fur Nuclear Service through technical development with overall design, fabrication, inspection, capacity certification test and functional qualification test of safety relief valves in accordance with KEPIC MN Code(or ASME Sec.III ). The safely relief valve is the important equipment used to protect the pressure vessel, the steam generator and the other pressure facility from overpressure by discharging the operating medium when the pressure of system is reaching the design pressure of the system. But we're depending on technology of the other country up to the present time. Because we don't have our own technologies, we have been spent the great time and money on installing and repairing safety relief valve at nuclear power plant. Therefore we have to achieve the development of safety relief valves for Nuclear Service with our own technologies.

This paper introduces works performed for reducing high frequency noise of a reciprocating compressor. Noise in a high frequency range strongly affects sound quality as well as increases total noise level of the compressor. In order to reduce the noise, two different works were carried out. the first work was to measure the vibration Power transferred through suspension spring and discharge pipe; and the second one was to obtain operational deflection shape from cross-power spectrum measured on shell. Based on the information, Adequate structural modification of the transfer path and shell resulted in noise reduction in a high frequency range.

An effective balancing method for mil compressors is developed based on vibration plane model. By assuming the design range of balancer size is not large and considering only the radial axial direction rigid vibration of the mil compressors, we can find the vibration plane (V-plane) describing the vibration level of the scroll compressor depending upon balancer design specifications. By in the intersection of two minimum lines (areas) obtained from the couple of V-Planes we can find the design lesion to minimize vibration level of the compressor. The full design process is described by using an illustrative example with upper and lower balancer weights. Further more sensitivity analysis of parameters important for designation of size and positioning of the balancer is analyzed.

The rotary compressor is widely used for the air conditioner because it is efficient and compact. In recent, the need for silent and efficient compressors is much stronger than the past. The new type muffler was invented to reduce noise level and to improve efficiency. The new type muffler that has two side discharge holes and dome shape represents much lower overall noise level, especially noise levels around 1kHz than the old type one that has one center discharge hole In acoustic spectra. Also it has higher air conditioner efficiency by lower oil discharging amount of a compressor than old type one that has rectangular shape and two side discharge holes. The noise reduction and efficiency improvement effects of the new type muffler were verified by tests for rotary compressors and air conditioners.

An applying Thermodynamic method for the purpose of measuring hydraulic efficiency of pump-motor system, based on IEC60041 code, is not easy to adopt at field test. Even though there were splendid development in measuring technic in discharge measuring through the hydraulic machina lots of unsolved problems concerned in flow-rate are still remain in measuring hydraulic efficiency in hydraulic machine. The key point in measuring hydraulic efficiency is to measure exact flow-rate. So, Thermodynamic methode provides a good solution. This methode measures hydraulic efficiency by detecting the difference of temperature and pressure between the hydraulic process of machine, without measuring flow-rate of pump or turbine. By measuring temperature in mk level and absolute pressure in pascal, we can get a difference of thermodynamic specific energy in Moliere chart before and after of hydraulic process, md that difference is equal to hydraulic loses. Following the standard in proceeding Thermodynamic methode, I hope these trial and records make others be familiar to the thermal methode and make it easer to beginner for trial.

Effects of a booster inducer on the suction performance of turbopumps are investigated in this paper. To see the effect of the booster inducer, suction performance tests are conducted with and without the booster inducer for three turbopumps. It is shown that the booster inducer can enhance the suction performance of turbopumps when the tip clearance of the main inducers are relatively large. Numerical analysis are also carried out to see the effects of the booster inducer on the performance of the main inducer. The booster inducer is shown to increase the static pressure at the inlet of the main inducer and prevent growing of inlet back flows which are believed to have deleterious effects on the suction performance of the inducer.

Experiments were performed to see the effect of radial tip clearance on a turbopump inducer, which has two blades with inlet tip blade angle of 7.8 degree and tip solidity of 2.7. Hydraulic and cavitation tests were done for three cases of tip clearance ratio, that is, 0.026, 0.053, and 0.079. With increase in the tip clearance, inducer head and pressure on the inducer tip decreased. Attached cavitation and cavitation surge were found in the cavitation tests. In the attached cavitation one cell rotated at the same rotational speed as that of the inducer. Cavitation performance deteriorated with increase in the tip clearance. The level of casing vibration increased in the cavitation condition and the level was very high when the attached cavitation appeared.

The 2-dimensional unsteady flows on and around the cambered airfoils were computed by applying LES with the deductive dynamic SGS model. The unsteady flow field were used as inputs to compute the far-field sounds and directivity patterns from rotating blades by a hybrid approach that exploits Farassat's formula. The BEM (Boundary Element Method) was applied to predict the frequency characteristics from the rotating blades for the cases of even- and uneven-pitched fans. The BEM results suggested that the unevenly pitched fan have less pronounced discrete peaks at BEF frequencies, which was confirmed by the experiment.

This paper presents numerical study on the performance improvement of the sirocco fan in a range hood. The performance of sirocco fan means a higher flowrate, a higher static pressure and a lower required motor power in a fixed geometry constraint. Various impeller geometric parameters, such as blade profile, blade diameter, blade thickness profile and blade exit angle, were investigated by numerically and the results were compared with each other to know the effects on the performance. In this approach, the volute geometry were fixed with the original shape. The numerical results show that the blade profile with airfoil shape and small exit blade thickness increases the performance. The blade exit angle shows optimum angle within a varied range. The efficiency of the optimized exit angle was about
$10\%$ higher than the base blade exit angle and the static pressure was about$28\%$ higher at the flow coefficient 0.22. -
This paper presents the response surface optimization method using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes Analysis to optimize the shape of a axial flow fan. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with k-
$\epsilon$ turbulence model are discretized with finite volume approximations. Regression analysis is used for generating response surface, and it is validated by ANOVA. Five geometric variables, i.e., distribution of sweep angle at mean and tip, lean angle at mean and tip, and spanwise location of mean were employed to optimize the efficiency. The computational results are compared with experiment data. As a main result of the optimization, the efficiency was successfully improved. -
One of noticeable features in the cross flow fan is that a working fluid passes through impeller blade twice without distinction between the inlet and exit angles. Also, it does produce higher circumferential velocity than other types of blade at the same flow rate in accordance with the application of the forward curved shape. However, a design theory for the cross-flow fan has not yet been formed owing to an eccentric vortex, which is the remarkable characteristics, occurred in a cross-flow fan. Furthermore, the eccentric vortex, which is difficult to control of the size and position, is the important cause of performance decrease. In this study, experiments are carried out to estimate the similarity of the cross-flow fan with various scales and rotational velocity changes. Pressure coefficients to flow coefficients with various scales of the cross-flow fan are plotted to research the application of the general similarity law of the turbomachinery in the cross-flow fan with Archimedes spital, which is the important factor haying an effect on it.

Turbo fan as an air moving device is widely used for its silent characteristics and high efficiency relative to the other centrifugal multi blade impeller. In general, turbo fan is installed with a scroll casing for energy conversion from kinetic one to pressure energy. However, a turbo fan without scroll casing is considered as a present model that is proposed model for compact design of a product In detail, the model has only 4 cutoffs as guiders for 4 separated outlets. Specially, equal distribution of flow rate generated by the model blower is main interest in this investigation. The optimal position of the guider is found by reducing abnormal flows such as reverse flow in each outlet.

The main purpose of this study is to get flowrate coefficient 'q' and to study characteristics of flowrate of screw pump. This study is based on Muskin's formula and depends on the computer simulation. The results of study are as follows. 1. Flowrate coefficient will reduce according to increase of inclination. The larger the pitch ratio is and the smaller the diameter ratio is, the more coefficient reduces. 2. As a rule, the coefficient increases according to reduction of the diameter ratio, but the coefficient tends to reduce when the ratio is less than 0.45. So, in actual application, it is recommended that the ratio should be above 0.45. 3. If the pitch ratio increases, the coefficient increases in case of small inclination and decreases in case of large inclination. 4. The coefficient increases according to number of windings. Especially, singles winding is not used in actual application because it has too small coefficient. 5. The coefficient decreases when the influent water level falls. Flowrate is almost zero when the water level is below
$40\%$ of Filling Points. -
Cavities are inevitable structures in automobile configuration. The flow-induced noise is generated from the wheel housing section by the interaction between a rotating wheel and the unsteady flows in the cavity. In this research the wheel housing was assumed by a rectangular cavity for simplification. We measured the radiated sound from the 2-D cavity without cylinder and from the rotating cylinder in the cavity by using the sound source localization method with an acoustic mirror system. In the 2-D cavity case of low Mach number(Ma=0.029), the sound sources were found to be located near the leading edge of cavity due to the shear layer instabilities. Comparing the cases of the rotating and the non-rotating cylinder, it is observed that the sound Pressure levels around the rotating cylinder in the cavity increased and the main acoustic sources were located at the rear section of the rotating wheel.

The present paper provides the design specifications and working principle of flow controlling vortex valve which will be adopted in a Korean next generation reactor (APR1400). The vortex valve is installed inside the pressurized safety injection tank of APR1400, and it passively controls the water discharge flowrate from the tank. In the present study, the performance of the vortex valve have been evaluated throughout the repeated experiments in the full-scale test facility called VAPER(VAlve Performance Evaluation Rig). Based on the experimental results, it is confirmed that the currently developed vortex valve satisfies the major performance requirements of APR1400 plant design in view of the peak discharge flowrate, pressure loss coefficient, and total discharge duration time. To achieve the highest quality of the experimental results, a quality assurance program for vortex valve tests has been strictly applied.

Characteristics of the high frequency pulsatile flow have been investigated experimentally to understand the flow phenomena in the hydraulic system. The accumulator in high frequency hydraulic system but that is not effective all frequency zone. Therefore, a hydraulic damper used with accumulator is suggested to reduce the high frequency pulsatile where the accumulator is not effective. The pulsating pressure obtained by Pressure measurement system are analyzed to power spectral density distribution. According to the variations of pump input pressure and actuator acceleration frequency, the pressure is measured with or without an accumulator or pulsatile damper The amplitude of pressure with damper is very lower than those without accumulator or damper due to absorbing function of damper. As the frequency of actuator acceleration is increased, the effect of damper becomes very important to decrease the amplitude of pulsatile Pressure waveform with high frequencies.

Recently, the application of variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) to the high speed direct injection (HSDI) diesel engine has gained more and more interest in automotive industry. A steady state experimental investigation has been undertaken on a 1.5L HSDI diesel engine to verify the benefits of VGT comparing to the standard engine having a waste gate turbocharger (WGT). Specifically, part load performances (e.g., fuel economy and emission) have been investigated under various vane angles of the VGT. The results show that the real exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate as well as the pumping loss is very important to improve break specific fuel consumption (BSFC). It was previously known that the pumping loss only is a main parameter. In addition, the trade-off relationship between BSFC and NOx according to boost pressure, and the decreasing tendency of NOx with increasing real EGR rate have been verified. 1-D numerical analysis also has been performed, and the numerical results are in good agreement with experimental results.

LG Electronics developed linear compressors for a household refrigerator which can reduce energy consumption up to
$24\%$ by only Drop-ln instead of a conventional reciprocating compressor. The linear compressor is composed of a linear oscillating motor, a piston directly coupled with the linear motor, a cylinder and the specific discharge system of LG. Because of this free-piston structure, the position of the piston can be changeable according to the voltage variation, load variation and so on. By this reason, LG linear compressor has been in need of an additional unit to control the position of the free-piston stably. In this paper we will introduce the innovative technology which is able to operate the linear compressor without controlling the piston position like a conventional reciprocating compressor. -
In the present study, a transient incompressible viscous turbulent flow is simulated for the automotive torque converter with moving mesh technique. For the analysis, entire torque converter flow passages are modeled. Computed torque ratio, capacity factor and efficiency show a good agreement with the experiment data. The flow instabilities characterized by back-flow and wake etc. appeared in some cascade passages are shown to be Propagating along tangential direction. These flow patterns are mainly influenced by the pump and turbine blade passing and can't be predicted through conventional steady simulation with a mixing plane approach. The understanding of the unsteady flow characteristics in a torque converter achieved in the present study may lead to the optimal design of a torque converter.
