The service reliability of power plants strongly depends on the excellent performance and integrity of hydrodynamic bearings. Consequently, the bearings must be properly designed so as to control vibration amplitudes of rotor due to mass unbalance in passing critical speeds and also suppress self-excited vibrations of rotor even over maximum rated speeds. Furthermore, the bearings must be designed so as to maintain required tribological performance even under severe operating conditions. However, various tribological troubles have been experienced in power plants in Japan. The actual troubles are analysed, focusing on not only direct mechanical causes but also specific bearing designs that surfaced the troubles. Furthermore human factors that decided such designs are also studied. The powerful database of troubles and analyses will contribute greatly to designing advanced power plants with enhanced service reliability in the future. To this end, trouble information should be disclosed, shared and transferred limitlessly. Cooperation of users of power plants is essential to making more advanced design specifications, because no one has easier access to operating and trouble information of power plants than users.

Tube oscillation behaviour is experimentally investigated for the study on the fuel rod fretting that is caused by the flow-induced vibration in nuclear reactor. The experiment was conducted in all at room temperature. The specimen of tube assembly was supported by plate springs which simulated the spacer grids and fuel rods of a fuel assembly. To investigate the influence of contact condition between the grids and rods, normal load of 10 and 5 N, gaps of 0.1 and 0.3 mm were applied. The range of the oscillation at the center of the fuel rod specimen was varied as 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 mm to simulate the fuel rod vibration due to flow. Displacements near the contact were measured with four displacement sensors during the tube oscillation. As results, the shape of oscillation (phase) varied depending on the contact condition. The oscillation displacement increased considerably from the contact to gap condition. The displacement increased further as the gap size increased. It is regarded that the spring shape influences the tube oscillation behaviour. Simple calculation showed that the slip displacement was very small. Therefore, cumulative damage concept is necessary for the fuel rod wear. The mechanism of plowing is thought required to explain the severe wear in the case of gap existence.

Tribological testing of DLC films was conducted using a rotating type ball on a disk friction tester in a dry chamber. This study made use of four kinds of mating balls that were made with stainless steel but subjected to diverse annealing conditions in order to achieve different levels of hardness. In all load conditions using martensite mating balls, the test results demonstrated that the friction coefficient was lower when the mating materials were harder. The high friction coefficient found in soft martensite balls appeared to be caused by the larger contact areas. The wear track on the mating balls indicated that a certain amount of material transfer occurs from the DLC film to the mating ball during the high friction process. Raman Spectra analysis showed that the transferred materials were a kind of graphite and that the contact surface of the DLC film seemed to undergo a phase transition from carbon to graphite during the high friction process.

Micro/nano adhesion and friction properties of mixed self-assembled monolayer (SAM) with different chain length for MEMS application were experimentally studied. Many kinds of SAM having different spacer chains(C6, C10 and C18) and their mixtures (1:1) were deposited onto Si-wafer, where the deposited SAM resulted in the hydrophobic nature. The adhesion and friction properties between tip and SAM surfaces under nano scale applied load were measured using an atomic force microscope (AFM) and micro scale applied load were measured using ball-on-flat type micro-tribotester. Surface roughness and water wetting angles were measured with SPM (scanning probe microscope) and contact anglemeter. Results showed that wetting angles of mixed SAMs showed the similar value of pure SAMs. The coating surface morphology was increased as mixing of SAM. Nano adhesion and nano friction decreased as increasing of the spacer chain length and mixing of SAM. Micro friction was decreased as increasing of the spacer chain, but micro friction of mixed SAM showed the value between pure SAMs. Nano adhesion and friction mechanism of mixed SAM was proposed in a view of stiffness of spacer chain modified chemically and topographically.

In order to evaluate the effect of alloying elements (Nb and Sn) on the wear resistance of advanced Zr fuel claddings, sliding wear tests have been performed in room temperature air and water and these results were compared with those of commercial alloys such as Zircaloy-4, A and B alloys. As a result, the advanced Zr fuel claddings have a similar wear resistance compared with the commercial alloys. The wear resistance of the advanced Zr fuel claddings is closely releted to the content of Nb and Sn even though the effects of transition elements are involved in deforming wear properties. In the tested specimens with similar Sn content, wear volume became down to a minimum at
$0.4\;wt\;\%$ Nb, then rapidly increased at 1.0 wt Nb. This behavior results in the variation of grain size with alloying contents. But Sn did not have a significant effect on the wear volume of advanced Zr fuel claddings below$1.1\;wt\%$ . The relationship between alloying elements and wear behaviour was evaluated and discussed using material compatibility factor. -
Nano-diamonds were added to Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) to improve the tribological properties of UHMWPE. Nano-diamonds which have a diameter of about 5-10nm were produced by detonation. UHMWPE/nano-diamonds composites were fabricated by hot pressing method. It is shown that friction coefficient was increased and wear resistance was improved as nano-diamonds were added to UHMWPE because of excellent mechanical properties of nano-diamonds located on UHMWPE surface.

Boron carbide thin coatings were deposited on silicon wafers by DC magnetron sputtering using a
$B_4C$ target with As as processing gas. Various amounts of methane gas$(CH_4)$ were added in the deposition process to better understand their influence on tribological properties of the coatings. Reciprocating wear tests employing an oscillating friction wear tester were performed to investigate the tribological behaviors of the coatings in ambient environment. The chemical characteristics of the coatings and worn surfaces were studied using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES). It revealed that$CH_4$ addition to As processing gas strongly affected the tribologcal properties of sputtered boron carbide coating. The coefficient of friction was reduced approximately from 0.4 to 0.1, and wear resistance was improved considerably by increasing the ratio of$CH_4$ , gas component from 0 to$1.2\;vol\;\%$ . By adding a sufficient amount of$CH_4\;(1.2\%)$ in the deposition process, the boron carbide coating exhibited lowest friction and highest wear resistance. -
Although wear resistance of material improves with increasing its hardness, it is known that the wear resistance of steel is varied with hardness of counter material. In this context, wear properties of steel must be depended on the difference of hardness between the testpiece and the counter material. In this study, using the pin-on-disc type wear machine, annealed carbon steels were tested against ahoy tool steels with various levels of hardness. Then the changes of wear properties of carbon steel according to the hardness of counter material were investigated and the morphology of worn surface after test were evaluated. The results indicate that if there are no remarkable difference of hardness between them, wear resistance of carbon steel in running-in wear decreases with increasing the hardness of counter material. However, its wear properties at the range of high sliding speed have no relation with hardness of counter material. It is clear that wear properties is influenced by the formation of oxide of steel on their worn surface during wear.

Ceramic femoral heads in the total hip replacement have been developed to reduce the polyethylene liner wear. Alumina and zirconia (3Y-TZP) are using in clinical application worldwide and there are many good test reports. However, alumina has a risk of catastrophic failure, and zirconia has the low temperature degradation in spite of enhanced fracture toughness. Recently, novel zirconia/alumina composite having low temperature degradation-free character and high fracture tough . was developed and it leads the lower wear 3f polyethylene than alumina and zirconia. In the present study, in order to optimise the microstructure of low temperature degradation (LTD)-free zirconia/alumina composite for the best wear resistance of polyethylene, various compositions of (LTD)-free zirconia/alumina composites were fabricated, and the sliding wear of UHMWPE against these novel composites were examined and compared with that against alumina and zirconia ceramics used for total hip joint heads.

The surface temperature at the interface of bodies in a sliding contact is one of the most important factors influencing the behavior of machine components. So the calculation of the surface temperature at a sliding contact interface has long been an interesting and important subject for tribologist. In this study to verify estimation of temperature rising, calculated temperatures were compared with measured temperatures. It is possible to calculate bulk and flash temperature.

The valve train system of engines has long been a sensitive area with respect to wear performance because of the high contact loads and surface sliding speeds encountered. In particular, wear problems of load-carrying components in relative motion, such as cam and tappet in valve train system have made troubles. To overcome these problems, combination of proper materials is important, as well as selecting of high wear performance materials. This paper presents the experimental result of friction and wear properties of ca/tappet materials. To investigate friction and wear properties for several combinations of materials, using commonplace tribometer(Plint 77, reciprocating type), we make a selection of a optimum material combination.

The purpose of this work is to general approach to numerically simulating wear in rolling and sliding contact area between wheel and rail interface based on the analysis of dynamics with general MBS package. A simulation scheme is developed that calculates the wear at a detailed level. The estimation of material removal follows Archard's wear equation which states that the reduction of volume is linearly proportional to the sliding distance, the normal applied load and the wear coefficient and inverse proportional to hardness. The main research application is the wheel-rail contact of Korea High Speed Railway.

In the present study, the residual stresses can have a significant on the life of structural engineering components. Residual stresses are created by the surface treatment such as shot peening or deep rolling. The objective of this experimental investigation is to study the influence of friction and wear characteristics due to residual stress under dry sliding condition. Friction and wear data were obtained with a specially designed tribometer. Test specimens were made of SUP9(leaf spring material) after they were created residual stress by shot peening treatment. Residual stress profiles were measured at surface by means of the X-ray diffraction. Sliding tests were carried out different contact pressure and same sliding velocity 0.035m/s(50rpm). Leaf spring assembly test used to strain gauge sticked on leaf spring specimen in order to measure interleaf friction of leaf spring. Therefore, we were obtained hysteresis curve. As the residual stresses of surfaces increased, coefficient of friction and wear volume are decreased, but the residual stresses of surfaces are high, and consequently wear volume do not decreased. Coefficient of friction obtained from leaf spring assembly test is lower than that obtained from sliding test. From the results, structural engineering components reduce coefficient of friction and resistant wear in order to have residual stresses themselves.

Rolling bearings are classified one of the most important machine elements. The various function of bearings are greatly influenced by grease, and higher performance of rolling bearing greases is required in improve bearing lubrication. Three urea/ether oil greases with identical composition were synthesized to compare the performance of these greases according to the thickener content of grease. The typical grease physical properties were investigated. And life test of these greases was conducted by FE-9 grease life tester. The characteristics of the greases before and after life test were investigated using FT-IR, microscope, OIT and TAN meter. Large differences in the grease performance depending on the content of the thickener were observed. The grease with higher content of the hickener showed higher performance such as long life time and low TAN value. After preliminary test, twelve greases were synthesized and evaluated the performance of dropping point and OIT, then optimized two greases were selected by SSRED (Six Sigma Robust Engineering Design) using dropping point and OIT data. Characteristics of the optimized two greases were on the same level with estimated value. The optimized grease by means of OIT value showed longer grease life in comparison with optimized grease by dropping point. However two greases showed higher performance than typical urea/ether oil.

In this study, biodegradable base Li-greases were prepared by using Li-soap thickener and vegetable oils such as soybean oil, rapeseed oil, castor oil and synthetic ester. Also, EP-greases were formulated by blending base Li-greases, anti-wear additives, EP additives, anti-oxidants and corrosion inhibitor etc. And EP-greases were characterized by analysing physical properties such as worked penetration, dropping point, 4-ball wear, extreme pressure, thermal properties etc. Biodegradability of base Li-greases and EP-greases were evaluated by CEC-L-33-A-93 method using several inoculums of domestic sewage treatment plant. As the results, biodegradability of vegetable oils were shown at the range of 97.1 to
$98.4\%$ . And biodegradability of base Li-greases and EP-greases were$86.2\%\;\~\;89.3\%\;and\;83.4\%\;\~\;90.0\%$ which were lower value than those o( vegetable oils due to effect of Li-soap thickener, respectively. Therefore, the EP-greases prepared in this study were easily biodegraded by microorgnism. -
This report describes the adhesibility of the polyurea greases. Generally, Polyurea greases were divided into three classes, aliphatic, alicyclic, and aromatic, according to the differences of the terminal alkyl group. The adhesion properties of polyurea greases were tested with Adhesion Tester by In-house method.

This study represents the newly advanced formulation of hydraulic fluids for extended drain interval and introduces the performance results of used oil samples from various excavators. The used oil samples, in this paper show that there is a sharp change in viscosity drop and moderate additive depletion when viscosity index of hydraulic oil is very high. For the extension of hydraulic fluid life, it is necessary to improve the stability of viscosity and oxidation. New target properties from the used oil analysis were proposed for extended life. Performance of newly developed hydraulic oil based on used oil analysis is compared with previously used one. The properties of new formulation are the viscosity index of 140 and improved thermal stability consists of VHVI base oil. Field test results showed the possibility of extension of fluid life. Additionally, for development of high performance product, new required properties and performances were discussed.

Several simulation techniques have been developed which are not practical deformation processes but are designed to embody specific tribological aspects. Sliding rolling type friction test machine (Cold rolling tribosimulator) was developed to simulate the tribological phenomena at the roll bite in real mill by laboratory scale. A rolled material is fed at a low speed of Max. 1/20 to that of roll speed, so as to obtain simultaneous plastic deformation in the material during rotation of the rolls in simulator. New cold rolling tribe-simulator is effective for evaluation of the lubricity of lubricant in cold rolling process.

A series of cooperative interlaboratory tests (round robins) was conducted in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003 by the DIN 51834 Working Group on Tribological Tests in Translatory Oscillation Apparatus. The statistical analysis of these test results shows the influence of cleaning solvent, machine model and evaluation criteria on the tribological properties of the lubricants tested. Coefficients of friction and wear results are ranked according to the effects of ten different cleaning solvents, where isopropanol gave the lowest values and isoparaffin solvents the highest. The effect of machine model on coefficients of friction varied from about
$0.2\%\;to\;0.9\%$ of the mean. Wear results were not affected. The tests also showed that the seizure criteria and methods of measuring wear required for in the test procedure do not provide a suitable measure of the tribological properties of some lubricants. The precision was Improved by introducing a grease apply caliper as well as an increased stroke to 1,5 mm and running-in. The temperature does not affect the precision of the oil test procedure. -
The Four-Ball Tester has been widely used as a tool to charaterize lubricity for long time. In order to understand more acurate properties of lubricants, more test methods have been developed. Among the test methods, SRV test method was compared to Four-Ball Tester in this paper.

Synchronizer ring performance is strictly required in order to extend manual transmission oil drain interval. Zn type additive, which is used as dispersant and anti-wear additive instead of SP additives in manual transmission oil, is applied to improve Synchronizing function and durability. But only Zn type additive is not suitable for high torque transmission because it has not good extreme pressure characteristics. We research on the synchronizer friction and extreme pressure properties in according to change additive types. As a result, it was found that the use of non-active extreme pressure and friction modifier additives has benefit in the improvement of synchronizer friction characteristics and durability.

In this study a general Galerkin FE formulation of the incompressible Reynolds equation is derived for lubrication analyses of noncontacting mechanical face seals. Then, the formulation is applied to analyze the flexibly mounted stator-type reactor coolant pump seals of local nuclear power plants, which have deep straight grooves or plane coning on their primary seal ring faces. Their various lubrication performances have been predicted. Results show that the analyzed deep straight groove seal should have a net coning of less than
$0.6\;{\mu}m$ to satisfy the leakage limit. And for the same amount of equilibrium opening force the plane coning seal requires to have a 3 times higher dimensionless coning than the deep straight groove seal. -
In the mixed lubrication regime, the roughness effects are very important due to the presence of interacting asperities. An average Reynolds equation using flow factors is very useful to determine effects of surface roughness on mixed lubrication. In this paper, the pressure flow factors and shear stress factor for Gaussian and non-Gaussian surfaces are evaluated in terms of kurtosis and skewness. particularly, the elastic deformation of the surface is considered.

The static and dynamic characteristics of HDD slider with ulta-low flying height are analyzed using Direct Numerical method with Boundary Fitted Coordinate System. The slip flow effect is considered using the Boltzmann equation solution in a form of the flow rate database. The air film stiffness and damping are evaluated by the small perturbation method.

Viscosity index improver (VII) is one of the major additives to the modern multigrade lubricants for the viscosity stability against temperature rise. However, it causes shear thinning effects which make the film thickness lessened very delicately at high shear rate
$(over\;10^5\;s^{-1})$ of general EHL contact regime. In order to exactly verify the VII's performance of viscosity stability at such high shear rate, it is necessary to make the measurement of EHL film thickness down to$\~100nm$ with fine resolution for the preliminary study of viscosity control. In this work, EHL film thickness of VII added lubricant is measured with the resolution of$\~5nm$ , which will give very informative design tool for the synthesis of lubricants regarding the matter of load carrying capacity at high shear rate condition. -
The basic Principles and methods of the on-line monitoring of tribology parameters (friction coefficient and wear allowance) and fault diagnosis for the hoist disc brake system were introduced, the method were based on the spring force and oil pressure of the brake system and the hoist kinematics parameters. The experiment on the monitoring and diagnosis of hoist brake system were carried out. The research results showed: the monitoring and diagnosis methods are feasible.

As electrorheological fluid(ER fluid) has a characteristic that apparent viscosity varies when electric field applied, so rheological characteristic(yield stress & viscosity) changes in proportion to the electric field applied and the response time is very short within a few miliseconds . In case of using ER fluid for journal bearing as lubricant, it is estimated that it's possible to realize very effective journal bearing system that is not complicate and has a very quick response time. It is necessary to examine the influence of rheological characteristic that varies with electric field applied on bearing characteristic to apply ER fluid to journal bearing, however there are few studies for about that. As for the journal bearing, it comes under high shear flow mode that has shear rate range of
$10^3\~10^4s^{-1}$ because rotational speed is very high and clearance is small. But most of the studies for about ER fluid issued until now is about the range of$10\~10^2s^{-1}$ . So, there are a lot of difficulties to understand the characteristic offish shear flow mode and furthermore it is restricted to make an experiment for about the characteristic of ER fluid because of the limitation of experimental equipment. The equipment was prepared to make an experiment lot high shear flow mode that has the range of$10^3\~10^4s^{-1}$ using ER fluid that is composed of silicon oil with dispersed particle of starch. Using the above system, the fluid characteristic of ER fluid was studied. -
Auto transmission system is composed by torque converter. clutch, brake, planetary goat and valve body controlling oil pressure. In the automatic transmission, the most largest influence elements are torque converter and clutch for oil performance. In this piper I studied failure of tribology causing sealing poor of the acting parts, leakage of the oil pressure and poor of the lubrication.

The sealing performance of O-ring is effected in environments of the O-ring seal, like that applied pressure, working temperature, pre-compressed ratio and materials. In this paper, design of composite O-ring under pressurized, compressed was optimized based on Taguchi experimental design method. and it analysed numerically using non-linear finite element method. Ogden model in which is developed based on the experimental data is used for simulating the contact stress and strain in NBR and PTFE materials. Sensitivity analysis was performed with FEM results, which are contact stress, strain and temperature as variable.

Finite element computations were carried out to study the indentation by rigid cone with half-angle of
$70.3^{\circ}$ for 72 different combinations of elasto-plastic properties that cover the wide range of mechanical parameters of common engineering solid materials. The dimensional analysis and representative strain concept were used in the analysis. It was shown that for the same representative strain value, the loading curvature C can be formulated under two different forms, which are based on two alternative dimensionless functions. The present study's one is simpler than the other previously found by other authors using the similar approach. For a wide range of material's parameters, the hardness-modulus ratio should be a parabolic function of${\sigma}E$ , rather than a power law function earlier proposed. -
The present paper theoretically investigates characteristics of moment balance of a tilting-pad thrust bearing. Pressure of lubricant film of the bearing was computed using tile finite element method, and average film temperature was estimated from the heat balance over a pad. From the investigation, it has been found that different two sets of tilt angles satisfy moment equilibrium of the pad about tile pivot for a given pivot location. The tilt angles converged depend upon initial tilt angles assumed. Quite different bearing performance, including load capacity, film thickness, and temperature, is shown to be obtained based on choice of the initial tilt angles.

This paper presents a performance analysis model of corrugated bump foil bearings. The analyses for not only 1st generation bump foil journal bearings but also bump foil thrust bearings are performed. Static performances such as load capacity, attitude angle, pressure distribution, foil deflection, and film thickness are accurately estimated by using soft elasto-hydrodynamic analysis technique and finite difference numerical method. Also dynamic performances such as stiffness coefficients and damping coefficients are estimated by perturbation method. The analysis technique may be appliable to rotordynamic analysis, stability analysis, and optimized bearing design.

The purpose of the paper is to investigate the noise characteristics of cylindrical roller bearings under radial load. The effects of radial clearance of the bearing, viscosity of the lubricant and number of the roller on the noise of the bearing are also examined. The results and discussions of the present paper might aid in the low-noise design of the cylindrical roller bearing.

In this paper, seismic responses of large tilting pad journal bearings which have
$3\~5$ tilting pads were numerically analyzed. The turbulent lubrication equation, the energy equation and motion equation were solved at each time step. The regime of operation of this bearing is laminar, turbulent and transitional. Also viscosity of working fluid was considered as function of only temperature and inlet pressure build-up was considered. Numerical results for a large tilting pad journal bearing showed journal center, maximum temperature, maximum pressure, friction torque. The relationship of bearing response and seismic intensity are discussed. -
Recently, load/unload(L/UL) process is applied to a computer information storage device due to its advantages such as lower power consumption, larger data zone, simpler fabrication of disk for no bumped parking zone, and rarer contact between the slider and media. An analysis of the transient motion for the slider is very important to design an air bearing surface (ABS) of the slider to secure the stable performance of the system. During the L/UL process, however, there are several issues occurred such as contact or collision between slider and media. Sometimes this will cause the system failure. In this study, the dynamics of the slider during the loading process are investigated through a numerical simulation using FEM analysis and experiment.

The SCM420 used mainly to automobile transmission gear has problems that it costs transmission gear maker much money in carburizing treatment. For this, it needs to alternate the existing material and heat treatment to new gear material and surface modification. For this, friction and wear experiment according to sliding speed and applied load was carried out to evaluate the wear resistance of two transmission gear materials with oxidation nitrocarburising and non-oxidation nitrocarburising NT100, The presumed wear volume was calculated with the image processing for evaluation of wear resistance of two transmission gear materials. The results show that the oxidation nitrocarburising has a distinguished wear resistance than non-oxidation nitrocarburising.

The average frictional coefficient was used generally to analyze the moving state of lubricated machine. But It is difficult of getting the correct friction coefficient because the average frictional coefficient of it is progressed always unstably with a large amplitute on driving condition. If correct analysis of frictional coefficient on working condition for lubricated machine can be possible, it can be effect on diagnosis of lubricated machine. The purpose of this study is carried out to get the working condition with a minimum frictional coefficient of transmission gear materials using statistical techniques.

The sliding wear behaviors of Zircaloy-4 nuclear fuel rod were investigated using two support springs with convex and concave shapes in room temperature air and water. The main focus is to compare the wear behavior of various test variables such as slip amplitude, environment, contact contours with different spring shape and a number of cycles. The results indicated that wear volume and maximum wear depth increased with slip amplitude in both air and water, but their trends tended to change according to the spring shapes and test environments. In air condition, the wear volume was controlled by wear debris behavior generated on worn surface. As a result, final wear volume and maximum wear depth decreased if a ratio of protruded wear volume to worn area
$(D_p)$ would be saturated to specific value. This is because wear particle layer could accommodate large strain by accumulating and transforming wear particle layer. However, in water condition, metal-to metal contact was more dominant and wear volume was greatly affected by changed mechanical behavior between contact surfaces since wear debris should be generated after repeated plastic deformation and fracture. After wear test, worn surfaces were examined using optical microscope and SEM and details of wear mechanism were discussed using a ratio of wear volume to worn area$(D_e)$ at each test condition. -
Water-lubricated frictional characteristics of stainless steel ball bearing is not well known compared to oil-lubricated frictional characteristics. Furthermore study on friction at high temperature is rare because bearing maintenance strategy for water-lubricated or chemicals-lubricated bearings of equipment is mostly based on change of failed bearings and parts. Ball bearings and ball screw are installed on the power transmission for a developing integral reactor and these are lubricated with high temperature and high pressure chemically-controlled pure water. Bearings and power transmitting mechanical elements for an atomic reactor needs high reliability. and high performance during estimated lifetime, and it should be verified. In this paper, experimental research results of frictional characteristics of water-lubricated ball bearing as a preliminary investigation.

Design of pre-compression region(trapping region) of the valve plate is an important element to minimize the pressure fluctuation in a cylinder and in discharge process, and pump noise. In this study, we tried to prove what the characteristics of the oil hydraulic pump would be according to the angle of the trapping region. Three kinds of asymmetrical valve plates were used. As a result, we found that by designing the trapping region, the slope of the pressure rise in the cylinder port from low-pressure suction region to high-pressure discharge region is relaxed and the pressure fluctuation width and the discharge pressure pulsation are reduced. Therefore, because the pump gets smooth pressure fluctuation and low fluid Impact, the pump noise is reduce.

This paper presents contact behavior of a perfluoroelastomer bonded door seal by a non-linear finite element method using the mechanical and thermal analysis. The shape effects are investigated for sealing performance of bonded door seal. Also maximum stress, temperature distribution and contact force are investigated. A bonded door seal was modeled three shape. The highest contact force occurs at model III(sunflower shape). The maximum stress of model III is lower than that of the others. The calculated FEM results show that the model III has excellent performance compared with other seal models.

Single flighted screw extrusion is the most cost effective method for the production of film, sheet, pipe and the fundamental step in other processes including blow molding and injection molding The temperature and injection pressure in barrel play a very important role in quality of products. Because thermal distortion and displacement of barrel by temperature difference and injection pressure difference cause irregular resine melting and flow. In this paper thermal distortion and stress of barrel includes pressure and temperature distributions by finite element analysis to understand dynamic characteristics of barrel.

An analysis of the dynamic behavior between disk and roller has been performed when the torque is transmitted to toroidal IVT (Infinitely Variable Transmission). The contact area, shape and pressure with elliptical shapes between disk and roller are computed as the transmission ratios are changed. This study will give the information of contact shapes between roller-input dist and roller-output disk which are working under the most severe condition. The computed results are expected to guide the design criteria for the enhanced endurance li(e. Furthermore, the investigation of contact behaviors is very crucial to develop the traction oil that the efficiency of IVT system is most dependent on.

In this paper, we investigated the wear lift, wear rate, and its transition on the Hertz pressure. In the experiment, we used TiAlCrN coating deposited by the sputtering technique and ball diameter of 10mm, 7.94mm and 4.76mm for the various Hertz pressure. Ball-on-disk sliding tests wire performed under the unlubricated condition. As the diameter of a ball decreased, the failure load of TiAlCrN coating decreased. However, a good correlation was observed between the wear life and Hertz pressure, and all ball specimens showed the infinite wear life at about 450MPa. In measurement of wear rate, as the diameter of the ball inclosed, the wear transition appeared in bigger load. However, a good correlation was observed between the wear rate and Hertz pressure. The transition appeared in the range from 550MPa to 600MPa at all ball speimens.

Diamond-like carbon(DLC) films are considerable research interest because of their widespread applications as protective coatings in areas such as optical windows, magnetic storage disks, car parts, biomedical coatings and as micro-electromechanical devices(MEMs). DLC films were deposited on WC-Co by PECVD using Ar,
$C_2H_4$ gas. Tribological tests were conducted using a ball-on-disk type tribometer in dry air. Three kinds of counter-bodies balls were used. The counter-bodies balls are SM45C, SUJ2 and$ZrO_2$ (3.17mm in diameter). Wear rate of the samples were calculated after measuring the worn-out volume of the wear track. As results wear test, the higher hardness of counter-bodies, friction coefficient low. As result of XPS estimation, wear debris generated as an oxide lower the friction coefficient. -
In this research, DLC thin films are produced as several hundred nm thickness by PE-CVD method. And then these thin films are estimated tribological characteristics to find out useful possibilities as a protecting film for high-quality function and life extension at MEMs by mechanical properties observation . These are measured thickness and residual stress of DLC coating. Compared after measuring friction coefficient, adhesion force, hardness, cohesive force of coating films. As results all test, we can decide several conclusions. First, friction coefficient decreased, as the load increased. otherwise, friction coefficient increased, as thickness of coating film increased under low load
$(1\~50mN)$ . Secod, adhesion force increased as thickness of coating films. Third, hardness of coating film is affected by substrate coating film when it is less than thickness of 300nm and it has general hardness of DLC coating film when it is more than thickness of 500nm. Fourth, cohesive force of coating film is complexly affected by hardness, adhesion force, residual stress, etc. -
In this study, the methodology for determination of shoulder height in the internal shape design of ball bearing using 3D contact analysis is proposed. The quasi-static analysis of a ball bearing was performed to calculate the distribution of applied contact load and angles among the rolling elements. From each rolling element loads and the contact geometry between ball and inner/outer raceway, 3D contact analyses using influence function are conducted. These methodology is applied to HDD ball bearing. The critical axial load and the critical shoulder height which are not affected by edge in the present shoulder height is calculated. The proposed methodology may be applied to other rolling element bearing for the purpose of reducing the material cost and improving the efficiency of the bearing design process.

The object of the present work is the analysis of head/disk interaction during start/stop and constant speed operation using acoustic emission (AE). The frequency spectrum analysis is performed using the AE signal obtained during the head/disk interaction. The FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) analysis of the AE signals is used to understand the interaction between the AE signal and the state of contact.

This paper deals with a premature failure mechanism of deep grooved ball bearing for automobiles. A close examination of used bearings revealed that the premature failure could be arose by dents on the ball. Universal testing machine with specially designed tools is used to simulate the practical dents on the ball and test bearings are assembled with dented balls and new hearing components. The endurance test results showed that the dents on the balls were printed on the races and these phenomena come to premature failure.

In this paper, the dent printing phenomena and critical dent size which lead to premature failure of deep grooved ball bearing for automobiles are presented. The results of newly assembled test bearings showed that the ball dent size strongly affect the bearing life and inner ring raceways were the major failed parts in spite of using the dented balls. The dent printing phenomena are a root cause of premature failure, which was not reported until now. And there exist the critical ball dent size for given rolling bearings and operating conditions. So, the initial condition of tribologically mating parts should be treated as important as the failed body itself.
