The ultimate safety-goal of nuclear power plants should be targeted at preventing release of nuclear radiation compared to general structures, Accordingly the phases of siting design construction and operation of NPPs are severely regulated by codes of aseismic design so as to assure safety of NPPs. To accomplish this goal strict quality assurace and seismic qualification tests should be conducted for all phases of NPP construction. In addition seismic monitoring systems should be installed and always in operation to provide proper post-earhquake procedures. Besides periodic safety review should be performed during operation along with the seismic margin assessment. In this paper general procedures to secure seismic safety of NPPs are systematically reviewed and additional considerations for improvement are suggested.

At 1:47 a.m, local time on September 21, 1999, a strong earthquake measured 7.3 on the Richter scale struck central Taiwan evoking another two earthquakes a few seconds late to wake up unprepared people of this small island. It caused 2,465 people killed 11,305 injured about 10,000 buildings collapsed and around 41,000 severely damaged, The major concerns after the earthquake are how to have learned from this natural disaster and how to rebuild earthquake-proof buildings without rendering up safety within reasonable costs. Inevitable actions for redrafting the building codes have been taken to re-strengthen the existing and new structures. Structural analysis tools and computer programs adopted by most practicing engineers have been re-examined to take into account the effects of the vertical component of ground shakings on structural responses. Most private structures were repaired by traditional methods without considering upgrading seismic resistibility because of economical reasons. Buildings open to the public are under consideration possibly enforced by making regulations to be upgraded to satisfy revised building codes. In addition new rehabilitation technologies such as structural control have been moving much faster than before and have become accepted by the public due to frequent reports by media and specialists. Building codes related to base isolators and energy absorption systems are still under legislation and expected to be published soon. Most of the new structures under construction designed by the building codes promulgated before the earthquake have been reconsidered to comply with the new codes even though it is not compulsory. Efforts have been made by the government engineering and research communities and universities in an attempt to reduce structural damage for future earthquakes and to construct if possible Taiwan as an earthquake-proof island.

For earthquake hazard estimation the data containing large historical events and recent complete observations with various uncertainty should be used together. The traditional maximum likelihood method is not adequate for this kind work. The maximum probable earthquakes in the Korean Peninsula are estimated by the method of an extended maximum likelihood estimation. The method can handle data with various uncertainty. The maximum probable earthquake in the Korean Peninsula is appeared to be 7.14
$\pm$ 0.34 in magnitude. -
The quality factor and the seismic source parameters such as the
$\chi$ corner frequency and the stress drop were estimated from the small-to-medium instrumental earthquake data in south Korea. The Q facter with 95% confidence level ranges from 1519 to 2158. The regression equation of$\chi$ in terms of epicentral distance R, is obtained as$\chi$ =0.006717+0.00015R. And the stress drop is estimated as 50 bar which is similar to the previous results carried out by independent researchers. Artificial ground motions were simulated using the estimated earthquake parameter values and compared with real earthquake, The simulated response spectrum is very similar to real one. -
Many formats are used for recording and processing in the research of earthquake seismology and earthquake engineering. It is very difficult to program the Reading and writing algorithm for data processing because fill formats are very different from each other. It is suggested new file format of Korea Standard earthquake data (KSED) two types of ASCII and binary that are read and written easily. The Program package of basic data processing (Analyst) which has function of basic filtering spectrum analysis event gathering phase picking and location is developed In addition this program supports file transformation from another format(Mini SEED OMD K2) to KSED format.

Several parameters to represent the characteristics of the observed at the domestic networks from several earthquakes occurred in the Korean Peninsula. Parameters to fit most the multiple Fourier amplitude spectra of the observed accelerations are estimated. This study adopts the stochastic ground motion model referred to the BLWN mode in which the energy is distributed randomly over the duration of the source and which has proven to be very effective in modeling a wide range of ground motion observations. The stochastic ground motion model employed here uses an omega-squared ({{{{ omega ^2 }}) Brune source model with a single corner frequency and a constant stress drop,. The {{{{ omega ^2 }} source model has become a seismological standard because of its simplicity an ability to predict spectral amplitudes and shapes over an extremely broad ranges of magnitudes distances and from the inversion show very unstable based on the fact of high values of mean/median. These results may imply that more observed data and more precise site classification including accurate preparation analysis of data such as more accurate scaling from counts to kine are needed for more stable are effective inversion of Fourier amplitude spectrum of the observed ground motions.

Korea Institute of Geology Mining and Materials(KIGAM) has been operating Korean Earthquake Monitoring System(KEMS) to archive the real-time data stream and to determine event parameters (epicenter origin time and magnitude)by the automatic processing and analyst review. To do this KEMS uses the Vindel Hue's velocity model which was derived from Wonju KSRS data. Because KIGAM now receives the real-time data from many stations including Wonju KSRS Cholwon seismo-acoustic array Uljin Wolsung Youngkwang Taejon Seoul Kimcheon Taegu etc. the proper velocity model should be established around the Korean peninsula, In this study P were velocity structures was derived from VELEST program using 69 events among the 835 events determined by KEMS in 1999 which were recorded by at least 5 stations. General trend of velocity structure was similar to Sang Jo Kim's model but velocity value was low in crust and high in upper mantle. Due to the sensitivity of inversion results to the initial input model the artificial short and blast data might be added.

In constructing a synthetic seismogram using ray-tracing method a suite of ray-code is required to obtain a realistic seismogram which is similar to the actual seismogram or earthquake record under consideration. An infinite number of rays exist for any arbitrarily located source and receiver. One select only a finite number of such rays in computing a synthetic seismogram so their selection becomes important to the validity of the seismogram being generated. Missing certain important rays or an inappropriate selection of ray-codes in tracing rays may result in wrong interpretation of the earthquake record or seismogram. Automatic ray-code generation will eliminate such problems. In this study we have developed an efficient algorithm, with which one can generate systemastically all the ray-codes connecting source and receiver arbitrarily located. The result of this work will helpful in analysing multiple reflections in seismic data processing as well as simulating Lg wave and multiply reflected or converted phases in earthquake study.

Korea Institute of Geology Mining and Materials(KIGAM) cooperating with Southern Methodist University(SMU) has been operating seismo-acoustic array in Chul-Won area to discriminate man-made explosions from natural earthquakes since at the end of July 1999. In order to characterize propagation parameters of detected seismo-acoustic signal and to associate these signals as a blast event accompanying seismic and acoustic signals simultaneously it is necessary to understand infrasound wave propagation in the atmosphere. Two comparable Effective Sound Velocity Structures(ESVS) in atmosphere were constructed by using empirical model (MSISE90 and HWM93) and by aerological observation data of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) at O-San area. Infrasound propagation path computed by empirical model resulted in rare arival of refracted waves on ground less than 200km from source region. On the other hand Propagation paths by KMA more realistic data had various arrivals at near source region and well agreement with analyzed seismo-acoustic signals from Chul-Won data. And infrasound propagation in specific direction was very influenced by horizontal wind component in that direction. Linear travel time curve drawn up by 9 days data of the KMA in autumn season showed 335.6m/s apparent sound velocity in near source region. The propagation characteristics will be used to associate seismo-acoustic signals and to calculate propagation parameters of infrasound wave front.

In order to reduce seismic hazard the characteristics of strong earthquakes are required. In the region where strong earthquakes do not happen frequently the stochastic simulation of strong motion is an alternative way to predict strong motions. this simulation required input parameters such as the quality factor the corner frequency the moment magnitude the stress drop and so on which can be obtained from analyses of records of small and intermediate earthquakes. Using those parameters obtained in the previous work the strong ground motions are predicted employing the stochastic method, . The results are compared to the two observed earthquakes-the Ulsan Offshore Earthquake and the Kyungju Earthquake. Although some deviations are found the predictions are similar to the observed data. Finally we computed attenuation equations for PGA PGV and ground accelerations for some frequencies using the results of predictions. These results can be used for earthquake engineering and more reliable results will come out as earthquake observations continue.

Landslide damage comprise most part of the damages from the earthquake and it only causes the damage to lives and structures directly but also cease the operation of social system by road or lifeline failure. For these reasons hazard assesment on the landslides has been recognized very important. And hazard maps have been used to visualize the hazard of the landslide. In this study as first step for application of hazard map to domestic cases hazard maps are made for the Ul-Joo Ul-san Korea, Where the Yan-san faults are located. For building hazard maps the degree of hazard are evaluated based on Newmark displacement and the resulting maps are constructed by GIS technique. In hazard assesment maximum ground acceleration obtained from attenuation equation of wave propagation and design earthquake acceleration suggested by Ministry of construction are used for acceleration term. Hazard maps are made by GIS programs Arc/Info and Arc/View based on the digital maps and data from lab tests and elastic wave surveys The maps show the possible landslide regions significantly and the displacements of slide are proportional to the slope angles.

Evaluating a Review-Level Ground Motion is a key to efficiently perform Seismic Margin Assessment of nuclear power plants whose purpose is to determine a ground motion level for which a plant has high-confidence-of-a-low-probability of seismic-induced core damage and to identify any weaker-link components. In this study a method to obtain RLGMs is reviewed which is recommended by Electric Power Research Institute and implemented to be applied to Limerick site in eastern and central U. S as a case study. This method provides reasonable and site-specific RLGMs as minimum required plant HCLPF for SMA that meet a target mean seismic core-damage frequency based on seismic hazard results and generic values of uncertainty and randomness parameters of the core-damage fragility curves. In addition high-frequency RLGM is justifiably modified to reflect the increased seismic capacity of high-frequency components and spatial variation and incoherence of input ground motion on a basemat of large structures by establishing a method to obtain high0-frequency reduction factors according to EPRI guidelines.

If a saturate sand is subjected to ground vibrations it tends to compact and decrease in volume. if drainage is unable to occur the tendency to decrease in volume results in an increase in pore water pressure and if the pore water pressure build up to the point at which it is equal to the overburden pressure the effective stress becomes zero the sand loses its strength completely. This phenomenon is called "Liquefaction" It is associated primarily but not exclusively with saturated cohesion soils. The attention and study on liquefaction have been growing since the earthquake in Niigita Japan in 1964. Many researchers on liquefaction effect have been carried out in many countries under the potential influence of earthquake including Japan. However little research on liquefaction has been reported in Korea because Korea has been considered to be safe from earthquake. The term "liquefaction" is only known among geotechnical engineers,. In this paper overview of liquefaction and the evaluation on the applicability of vibrated crushed-stone pile as a liquefaction prevention method are presented.ethod are presented.

the shaking table tests for 5 different model sections are performed to investigate the behaviors of quay walls during earthquakes and to evaluate the seismic performance of quay walls with countermeasures. 5 different model sections describe the cases of dense soil and loose soil in the foundation repectively the case to which gravel backfill was applied and the cases to which light material replacement method and sand compction pile method was applied repectively for sesmic countermeasure methods. Pore water pressures accelerations and deformations in quay walls and grounds are analyzed. As a result the softening of foundation and backfill soils have much influence on the behaviors of quay walls. Also light material replacement method and sand compaction pile method are effective in improving the seismic performance of quay walls.

As structure-soil interaction analysis for the seismic analysis of structures requires a nonlinear analysis of a structure-soil system considering the inelastic characteristics of soil layers nonlinear analyses of the foundation-soil system with the horizontal excitation were performed considering the nonlinear soil conditions for the nonlinear seismic analysis of structures. Stiff soil profile of SD and soft soil profile of SE specified in UBC were considered for the soil layers of a foundation and Ramberg-Osgood model was assumed for the nonlinear characteristics of soil layers. Studies on the changes of dynamci stiffnesses and damping rations of surface and embedded foundations depending on foundation size soil layer depth and piles were performed to investigate the effects of the nonlinear soil layer on the horizontal and rotational dynamic stiffnesses and damping ratios of the foundation-soil system According to the study results nonlinear prperties of a soil laryer decreeased horizontal and rotational linear stiffnesses and increased damping ratios largely Effects of foundation size soil layer depth and piles were also significant suggesting the necessity of nonlinear seismic analyses of structures.

The earthquake hazard has been evaluated for 10km by 10km area around Kyeongju which is located near Yangsan fault and has abundant historical earthquake records. The ground motion potentials were determined based on equivalent linear analysis by using the data obtained from in situ and laboratory tests and the El centro eartqhuake record scaled to CLE and OLE of the region. The in situ tests include 9 boring investigations 2 crosshole 7 downhole 13 SASW tests and in the laboratory X-ray diffraction analyses and resonant column tests were performed. The peak ground accelerations range between 0.140g and 0.286g on CLE and between 0.051g and 0.116g on OLE respectively showing the good potential of amplification in the deep alluvial layer which is common in Kyeongju area. the response spectrum based on the Korea design guide was sometimes underestimate the motion. particularly near the natural period of the site and the importance of site-specific analysis and need for the improved site categorization method were introduced.

In this study liquefaction hazard potential was assessed by modified Seed and Idriss method and maps of liquefaction hazard potential utilized by LPI(Liquefaction Potential Index) and FE(Equivalent Liquefaction Factor of Safety) were constructed in two dimensional space, Comparisons of liquefaction hazard maps assessed by LPI and FE are represented to verify the FE method proposed in this study. Based on the results of comparing liquefaction hazard map using LPI and FE there is similar distribution trend of zonation indices. from the result of comparison of liquefaction hazard maps of FE base using Hachinohe and ofunato PGA(Peak ground Acceleration) data at one site of port and harbor in Korea the values of FE in liquefaction hazard map using Hachinohe data are underestimated. And in the view of quantitative analysis FE is more convenient than LPI because types of results from FE are factor of safety that widely used in geotechnical practice and aseismic design standard for port and harbor in Korea.

Recently many high-rise apartment buildings are constructed using the box system which is composed only of concrete walls and slabs. Commercial softwares such as ETABS used for the analysis of high-rise apartment buildings are employing the rigid diaphragm assumption for simplicity in the analysis procedure. In general the flexural stiffness of floor slabs are ignored in the analysis, This assumption may be reasonable for the estimation of seismic response of framed structures. But in the case of the box system used in the apartment buildings floor slabs has major effects on the lateral stiffness of the structure. So if the flexural stiffness of slabs in the box system is ignored the lateral stiffness may be significantly underestimated, For these reasons it is recommended to use plate elements to represent the floor slabs. In the study A typical frame structure and a box system structure are chosen as the example structure. When a 20 story frame structure is subjected to the static lateral loads the displacements of the roof are 15.33cm and 17.52cm for the cases with and without the flexural stiffness of the floor slabs. And in case of box system the roof displacement was reduced from 16.18cm to 8.61cm The model without the flexural stiffness of floor slabs turned out to elongate the natural periods of vibration accordingly.

In this study the effect and applicability of viscoelastic dampers on the seismic reinforcement of steel framed structures are investigated in the context of the performance based design approach. The effect of the damper on dissipating the input seismic energy was investigated with a single degree of freedom system. For analysis models a five-story steel frame subjected to gravity load and a ten-story structure subjected to gravity and wind load were designed. the code-specified design spectrums were constructed for each soil type and performance objective and artificial ground excitation records to be used in the nonlinear time history analysis were generated based on the design spectrums. Interstory drift was adopted as the primary performance criterion. According to the analysis results both model structures turned out to satisfy the life safety performance level for most of the soil conditions except for the soft soil. It was also found that the seismic performance could be greatly enhanced by installing viscoelastic dampers on appropriate locations.

In this study the modified seismic coefficient method for seismic analysis of buried box structures is developed for practical purpose. The loading coefficient in the modified seismic coefficient method is determined from the results of the response displacement analysis. In the developed method adequate velocity response spectrum in accordance with soil condition is also needed to seismic design of buried box structures, In order to investigate applicability of the modified seismic coefficient method various analyses are performed with different parameters such as depth of base rock height and width of box buried depth and value of standard penetration test. Results from the modified seismic coefficient method are compared with those of the response displacement method in terms of the maximum bending moment and the location of it. From the comparison it is shown that the feasibility of the modified seismic coefficient method for seismic analysis of buried box structures.

This study investigates the ductility capacity of slender-wide reinforced concrete walls under predominant flexural moment loading. The experimental work for this study aims to provide design guidelines for bar detailing in critical regions under compressive stress in particular in case of slender-wide RC walls. According to the experimental observation the Bernoulli hypothesis of linear strain distribution is no longer valid and the ultimate compressive strain of concrete is significantly reduced, It is postulated that the nonlinear strain distribution causes the concentrated compressive stressed region and hence the premature crushing failure at the toe of walls. The reduced ultimate strain and nonlinear strain distribution need transverse reinforcement for confinement and more realistic models for the strength and displacement estimation of slender-wide RC wall.

It is essential to establish an earthquake alert system real-time seismographic data acquisition and data transmission by dedicated communications,. Up to now approximately 60 earthquake stations are installed in Korea and being operated by KMA. KEPRI,. KINS and KIGAM and its number will be increased in time. The earthquake data recorded in half of these stations are transmitted to data center and analysed in quasi real-time. Therefore if these real-time seismographic stations be connected to each organization by dedicated lines and we will develop an algorithm which we can calculate the magnitude and epicenter within 25-30 seconds after an earthquake occurred it will be possible to develop an Earthquake Alert System giving several tens of seconds warning in advance.

This paper presents intermediate results of an on-going research for identification of the modal and the stiffness parameters of a bridge based on the ambient vibration data caused by the traffic loadings. The main algorithms consist of the random decrement method incorporating band-pass filters for estimation of the free vibration signals the cross spectral density method for identification of the modal parameters and the neural networks technique for estimation of the element-level stiffness changes. An experimental study is carried out on a scaled bridge model with a composite section subjected to various moving vehicle loadings. Vertical accelerations are measured at several locations on the girder. The estimated frequencies and mode shapes are found to be well-compared with those obtained from the impact tests. The estimated stiffness changes using the neural networks are found to be very good for the case with the simulated data. However the accuracy is found to be not quite satisfactory for the case with the experimental data particularly for the small value of the stiffness changes.

Seismic probabilistic risk assessment(RA) rather than deterministic assessment provides more valuable information and insight for resolving seismic safety issues in nuclear power plant design. In the course of seismic PRA seismic fragility analysis is the most significant and essential phase especially for structural or mechanical engineers. Lately the seismic fragility analysis is taken as a useful tool in general structural engineering as well. A systemized and synthesized procedure or technology related to seismic fragility analysis of critical industrial facilities reflecting the unique experiences and database in Korea is urgently required. This paper gives a state-of-the-art reviews of PRA and briefly summarizes the technologies related to PRA and seismic fragility analysis before developing an unique technology considering characteristics of Korean database. Some key items to be resolved theoretically or technically are extracted and presented for the future research.

Nuclear power plant structures may be exposed to aggressive environmental effects than may cause their strength and stiffness to decrease over their service lives, Although the physics of these damage mechanisms are reasonably well understood and quantitative evaluation of their effects on time-dependent structural behavior is possible in some instances such evaluations are generally very difficult and remain novel. The assessment of existing RC containment in nuclear power plants for continued service must provide quantitative evidence that they are able to withstand future extreme loads during a service period with an acceptable level of reliability. Rational methodologies to perform the reliability assessment can be developed from mechanistic models of structural deterioration using time-dependent structural reliability analysis to take earthquake loading uncertainties into account. The final goal of this study is to develop the reliability analysis of RC containment structures. The cause of the degrading is first clarified and the reliability assessment has been conducted. By introducing stochastic analysis based on random vibration theory the reliability analysis which can determine the failure probabilities has been established.

In order to evaluate the limit earthquake resistance of multi-story steel frames influenced by the strength and stiffness ratios of members a series inelastic response analysis were carried out. From the analysis results the damage distribution rules of multi-story steel frames were proposed. Conclusions are summarized as follows. 1)As the stiffness ratio of beam and column becomes small damage concentrate on the lower end of columns of the first story. 2) Considering the strength and stiffness ratios of beam and column with weak beam type mechanism the equations predicting the damage distribution of multi-story steel frames were proposed.

Current seismic design codes for building structures are based on the method which can provide enough capacity to satisfy objected performance level and exactly evaluate the seismic performance of buildings. The capacity spectrum method using the nonlinear static(pushover) analysis is becoming a popular tool for evaluating the seismic performance of existing and new building structures. By means of a graphical procedure capacity spectrum method esimates the performance level of structure by comparing the capacity of structure with the demand of earthquake ground motion on the structure. In the method the relation between base shear estimated by a nonlinear static analysis and horizontal displacement is used. Capacity spectrum is usually expressed as what represent the responses of the equivalent single degree of freedom (ESDOF) system for the building structures. However there are some problems in converting procedures into ESDOF system which include not considering the effect of higher modes of structures. The objective of this paper is to compare and verify existing methods and suggest the modified capacity spectrum for seismic performance evaluation of building structures.

The seismic behavior of moment connections consisting of reinforced concrete columns and steel beams is investigated based on four 2/3 scale tests of exterior beam-column joints subject to reversed cyclic loading. The major test parameters were the number of hoops the isolated concrete contribution and the use of headed studs in the joint regions between columns and beams. Their influence on the seismic response of the connections is presented and compared. Among them the CF3 specimen containing two hoops each in the joint and column regions above and below exhibited the most favourable hysteretic response. This indicates that this type of joint details can be used in the low seismic areas such as Korea.

The panel shear and bearing strengths determining the seismic resistance of reinforced concrete column-to-steel beam connections are predicted by various methods for four previously tested exterior beam-column joints. The analytical approach to model the joint deformation is also examined. Several analyses incorporating the deformations of panel shear and bearing in the joint are demonstrated using a analyses incorporating the deformations of panel shear and bearing in the joint are demonstrated using a fairly simple connection model in the commercial packages such as Drain2dx and IDARC. The strength prediction results indicated that the ASCE method with the modifcation of the comprssion strut contribution is th most accurate. It is also considered that the analytical model presented including the joint deformation can be used for the overall analysis

A new form of construction utilizing structural steel as the boundary elements in ductile flexural concrete walls is proposed to solve the bar congestion problems associated with such a heavily reinforced region. Two wall specimens containing rectangular hollow structural sections(HSS) and channels at their ends respectively were constructed rectangular hollow structural sections(HSS) and channels ar their ends respectively were constructed and tested under reversed cyclic loading to evaluate the construction process as well as the structural performance. One companion standard reinforced concrete wall specimen was also tested for the comparison purpose At an Initial stage all three specimens were carefully detailed to have the approximately same flexural capacity. Analysis and comparison of test results indicated that the reversed cyclic responses of the three walls showed similar hysteretic properties but in those with steel boundaries local bucking of the corresponding steel elements following significant yielding of structural steel was prominent. Design procedures considering local instability of the structural steel elements and the interaction between steel chord and concrete web members in such composite walls are presented.

The behavior of a unreinforced cement brick building structure subjected to earthquake loading was experimentally investigated. for this four full size wall specimens were tested under quasi-static in-plane cyclic loading. Experimental observations indicate that the failure modes of unreinforced masonry walls are principally governed by sliding or/and rocking depending on the aspect ration and magnitude of axial loading. Also found was the flexure or shear mode resulting from the degraded strength of brick and/or mortar due to the cyclic loading effect.

This paper introduces the acceptance criteria for reinforced concrete moment frames based on structural testing of ACI in preparing and proposes criteria for acceptable limiting drift and energy dissipation ratios of reinforced concrete shear walls for structural testing. Limiting drift and energy dissipation ratios were examined for tests on shear walls having ductile type failures. Test data were analyzed and compared to results for a suggested acceptance criteria that involves a limiting drift that is a function of aspect ratio a limiting energy dissipation ratio that is a function of displacement ductility and damping.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate seismic performance of reinforced concrete pier columns in Seohae Ground Bridge. Since the bridge was designed before preparing the seismic design specification the bridge columns of hollow hexagonal section were designed and constructed with insufficient seismic reinforcement details such as longitudinal and transverse reinforcement lap-splices. In order to take the necessary measures to improve its seismic performance experimental study was performed by small-scale test for the bridge columns, From the quasi-static test for small-scale column specimens the lap-splices were not critical for overall behavior of the column if sufficient lap-splice-length was provided. The test results of failure mode effective stiffness ductility and equivalent viscous damping ratio are presented.

The seismic performance evaluation of the existing non-seismic detailed RC piers has risen as urgent task for rational and cost-effective seismic retrofitting works as well as development of new seismic design concept. The scale model test has been conducted to investigate nonlinear behavior characteristics and the seismic performance of existing piers with lap-spliced longitudinal reinforcements in the plastic hinge zone which are of the solid circular and the hollow rectangular section. The lap splice in this zone is found to cause premature bond failure. The experimental results show very poor seismic performance of circular section pier but relatively large ductility of the rectangular one.
-
The influence of lap splice of longitudinal bars in the plastic hinge zone on the nonlinear behavior characteristics of RC piers has been investigated through the scale model tests. The seismic performance of bridge piers with lap splice is found to be insufficient due to the premature bond failure. On the other hand it is confirmed that the preventing lap splice in the plastic hinge zone enhance the seismic performance considerably even without the seismic details of transverse reinforcements. Bases on these experimental results new seismic detailing concept appropriate to moderate seismicity region has been proposed.

The existing solid circular RC pier without seismic detailing is found to have poor ductility due to the premature bond failure of lap spliced longitudinal bars. The steel-jacket was introduced to prevent this unexpected type of failure. The nonlinear behavior and he seismic performance of the retrofitted pier were examined through the scale model test and compared with those of existing one. It is confirmed from the test results that the steel-jacket retrofitting can be used as an measure to improve seismic performance considerably.

Strenght and ductility are major factors in the aseismic design of a bridge pier. In spite of good performance in both steel piers have not been used widely due to high cost. But with the filled-in concrete the steel pier have advantages compare to the steel pier only such as improved strength ductility fast construction small section and reasonable cost. In this paper concrete-filled steel piers are tested using quasi-static cyclic lateral load with constant axial load to evaluate the performance. The secondary reinforcement devices such as bolts corner plate and turn buckle are used inside of the piers to improve the ductility with minimum additional cost. Test results shows filled-in concrete and secondary reinforcement devices increase the strength and the ductility of the steel pier.

Longitudinal dynamic behaviors of a bridge system under seismic excitations are examined with various magnitudes of peak ground accelerations. The stiffness degradation due to abutment-soil interaction is considered in the bridge model which may play the major role upon the global dynamic characteristics. The idealized mechanical model for the whole ridge system is proposed by adopting the multiple-degree-of-freedom system which can consider components such as pounding phenomena friction at the movable supports rotational and translational motions of foundations and the nonlinear pier motions. The abutment-soil interaction is simulated by utilizing the one degree-of-freedom system with nonlinear spring. The stiffness degradation of the abutment-soil system is found to increase the relative displacement under moderate seismic excitations.

This study investigates the effect of hysteretic characteristics to the Inelastic Demand Spectrum (IDS) which was expressed by an acceleration(Sa) and a displacement response spectrum (Sd). Elasto Perfectly Plastic(EPP) model is used in this study and inelastic demand spectrum (Sa vs, Sd) are obtained from a given target ductility ratio. For a given target ductility ratio IDS can be obtained by using nonlinear time history analysis of single degree of system with forth five recorded earthquake ground motions for stiff soil site. The effect EPP model under demand spectrum is investigated by ductility factor and natural frequency. According to the results obtained in this study IDS has dependency on ductility factor and natural frequency.

This paper briefly summarizes the basic concepts and main characteristics of seismic design of New Zealand Standards(NZS) with regard to reinforced concrete(RC) structures. NZS used the concept of the capacity design and the limit state design to satisfy the requirements of serviceability and safety. Plastic mechanisms and details with respect to the limit state of safety are briefly presented in this paper. The understanding of this advanced seismic design concept will enable us to implement the basic theory of capacity design and contribute to the development of Korean seismic code in new generation,

The purpose of this paper is to investigate dynamic characteristics of an isolated bridge with a different location of seismic isolation at piers and to determine the best location of seismic isolation. The substructure of the bridge is two column framed type reinforced concrete and has relatively high piers so it has long natural period, To decide the best location of seismic isolations displacement shear force bending moment acceleration and absorbed energy are compared using fast nonlinear analysis. To isolate overall structures is effective to bending moments and shear forces for long period bridges.

To evaluate the seismic performance of a base isolated building accurate analytical model should be selected. The analytical results such as reduced accelerations member forces and relative displacements of the superstructure of the base isolated building are only meaningful when the analytical model is close enough to the real structure. Real size one bay-two story steel frame and two kinds of seismic isolators(laminated elastomeric bearing and lead-rubber bearing) are designed. manufactured and constructed in the laboratory. Free vibration tests using fuse bars were conducted to evaluate the change of dynamic characteristics(period and damping) before and after base isolation of the steel frame. The experimental results of free vibration tests were also used as a bench mark for adjusting the selected analytical modeling to real base isolated steel frame.

IN analyzing earthquake response of structures important focus is on their diaplacements and shear forces. However seismic technology of passive energy dissipation makes focus on the seismic energy distribution of structures. The passive dampers enhance the capability of energy dissipation by their hysteretic behavior thus preventing the structural plastic deformation. In this paper the building structure with an active controller is analyzed with the view of earthquake energy distribution under elastic and plastic behaviors. The active control makes an effect of increasing damping capability which absorbs most of the earthquake input energy. Finally the different active gains resulting from the plastic deformation are applied to the active analysis and control forces and earthquake energy response are compared.

This paper presents a computer program for a 2-D fluid-structure-soil interaction analysis. With this computer program the fluid can be modeled by a spurious free 4-node displacement-based fluid element which uses rotational penalty and mass projection technique in conjunction with the one point reduced integration scheme to remove the spurious zero energy modes. The structure and near field soil are discretized by the standard finite elements while the unbounded far field soil are discretized by the standard finite elements while the unbounded far field soil is represented by the frequency dependent dynamic infinite elements. Sine this method models directly the fluid-structure-soil system it can be applied to the dynamci analysis of 2-D liquid storage structure with complex geometry. For the purpose of verification dynamic analyses for tanks on a rigid foundation and on compliant embankment are carried out. Comparison of the present results with those by ANSYS program shows good agreement.

In this thesis the dynamic behavior of the vehicles is analyzed while the track is subjected to lateral vibration due to earthquakes. A computer program is developed which can simulate dynamic responses of vehicles subjected to earthquake loading. The analysis considers two types of two types of vehicles : I. e. a 2-axle vehicle with 13 DOF's an da power car of K-TGV with 38 DOF's It can also consider the interaction with substructures such as tracks and bridges. El Centro record is considered as earthquake loading. The creep force module developed in this study is verified and the results of this study are compared with those of others. Furthermore he running safety of high-speed railway vehicles(K-TGV) subjected to earthquake loading is studied. Based on the results of this study the running safety of the K-TGV can be confirmed against el centro earthquake.

In this study a numerical method for soil-pile interaction analysis buried in multi-layered half planes is presented in frequency domain using FE-BE coupling. The total soil-pile interaction system is divided into two parts so called far field and near field beam elements are used for modeling a pile and coupled with plain strain elements for soil modeling. Boundary element formulation using the multi-layered dynamic fundamental solution is adopted to the far field and coupled with near field modeled by finite elements. In order to verify the proposed soil-pile interaction analysis method the dynamic responses of a pile on multi-layered dynamic fundamental solution is adopted to the far field and coupled with near field modeled by finite elements. In order to verify the proposed soil-pile interaction analysis method the dynamic responses of a pile on multi-layered half-planes are performed and compared with experiment results. Through this developed method the dynamic response analysis of a pile buried in multi-layered half planes can be calculated effectively in frequency domain.

In many dynamic problems such as foundation vibrations ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation and blasting analysts are confronted with the problem of wave propagation in an infinite or semi-infinite media. In order to simulate this situation by a finite analytical model provisions must be made to absorb the stress waves arriving at the boundary. Absorbing boundaries are mathematical artifacts used to prevent wave reflections at the boundaries of discrete models for infinite media under dynamic loads. An analytical study is carried out to examine the effectiveness of Lysmer-Kuhlemeyer model one of the most widely used absorbing boundaries. Validity of the absorbing boundary conditions suggested by Lymer-Kuhlemeyer is examined by adopting the solution of Ewing et al. to the problem of plane waves from a harmonic normal force on the surface of an elastic half-space. The Ewing's problem is than numerically simulated using the finite element method on a semi-circular mesh with and without absorbing boundaries which are represented by viscous dashpots. The absorption ratios are calculated by comparing the displacements at the absorbing boundaries to those at the free field without absorbing boudaries.

Earthquake response analyses are conducted for the investigation of the ground shaking during the 1995 Hyogoken-nambu earthquake. Port Island a man made island with about 8{{{{ KAPPA m^2 }} area is chosen for this purpose Because earthquake measurement with vertical array was conducted there. Strain dependent characteristics of soil can be modeled well into Hardin-Drnevich Model. Four analyses are conducted : total stress analysis by equivalent linear method non-linear method. and two effective stress analyses. All analyses except equivalent linear analysis show fairy good agreement with observed record mainly because the non-linear behavior of Holocene clay layer has predominant effect on the behavior of fill, However detailed investigation show that effective stress analyses give much better prediction than total stress analyses.

In the rail facilities the rail track consists of rail tie fastening accessories and bed,. The rail track is largely divided into Ballast Bed Track(BBT) and Concrete Bed Track(CBT) according to the type of bed. In this thesis among Concrete Bed Track slab track which is used for the Japanese high speed railway is a target of this study. Dynamic analysis by using finite element method are performed. where moving rain load is periodic function. Then through parametric study some conclusions are obtained as follow. Cement Asphalt Mortar(CAM) affects contrary mechanical behavior to rail and slab greatly. Therefore change of CAM spring coefficient should be handled with care, For slab thickness thin slab is more profitable to reduction of vibration of rail than thick one but mechanical capacity of slab is deteriorated, Improved structural type is proposed then structural analysis is performed for this one. This type is effective to reduction of vibration of railway system.
