The Hyogoken-Nambu Earthquake of January 17, 1995 inflicted severe damage in the Hanshin and Awaji areas such as has never been seen in Japan in recent years. The safety inspections of the dams conducted in the area by site offices and dam experts immediately after the earthquake showed that there was no damage affecting the safety of the dams although slight damage was observed in several dams. The investigation also revealed that the peak accelerations at dam sites were much smaller than those at soil sites. The Ministry of construction organized the Committee on Evaluattion of Earthquake Resistance of Dams after the earthquake. The Committee confirmed through dynamic analysis that the dams designed in accordance with the present design criteria in Japan are safe under the magnitude of shaking that occurred close the source fault of the Hyogoken-Nambu Earthquake.

Spectral characteristic of Kyeongju earthquake occurred on the June 2, 1999 with magnitude 3,4 is analyzed. It is guessed that the stress energy release of source within relatively short period caused the ground near the epicenter to vibrate with large amplitude for the magnitude and predominantly high frequency. The cumulative absolute velocity and average spectrum acceleration are 0.034 gsec and 0.118g, respectively lower than threshold values of potential earthquake damage which is consistent with the investigation of damage in field. The analysis of the acceleration records of Kyeongju earthquake shows the need to develop the ration criterion for the determining the operating basis earthquake of nuclear power plant.

The attenuations of peak vertical displacements are studies using a conventional least squeare regression technique for microearthquakes occurred in the Kyungsang Basin southeastern Korea. The regression model applied to bandpass-fitered ground motion data includes parameters to account for geometric spreading anelastic attenuation depending on frequency source size and station site effects. Thirty nine displacement traces obtained by integrating velocity records for six shallow local microearthquakes are used to determine attenuation characteristics in the Basin. The regression result of the peak amplitude data leads to Q(f)=59.9 {{{{ {f }^{0.955 } }} for 1.5Hz
$\leq$ f$\leq$ 25 Hz. It appears that the anelastic attenuation in the Kyungsang Basin is greater than that in the Western North America Area. -
Korea Earthquake Monitoring System(KEMS) in the Korea Institute of Geology Mining and Materials(KIGAM) as detected more than 1000 events since the end of 1998. But not all events are interpreted as earthquakes because many events are concentrated on daytime. It strongly implies that in addition to earthquake these events include artificial effects such as industrial blasting. Before the determination of eathquake charactertistics in the korean peninsula it is necessary to discriminate the detected events as earthquakes or artificial events. For the discriminant study KIGAM and SMU(Southern Methodist University) installed a triangular four-element 1-km aperture seismo-acoustic array at Chul-Won area northeast of Seoul Korea. Each array element includes a GS-13 seismometer in the bottom of borehole and a Validyne DP250-14 microbarometer sensor mounted inside of the borehole 1,2 meter deep connected to a 11 arm radial array of 10m porous soaker hoses. This array introduce the use of 2.4-GHz radios for inter-array self-contained solar-charged power system and GPS time-keeping system. A 24-bit digital data acquisition system performs 40 SPS in the infrasound and seismometer data. Velocity and direction of wind and temperature are also measured at hub site and included to the data stresam. This seismo-acoustic array will be used to identify and locate associated with industrial blasting and these identified and located events will be applied to form a ground truth database useful to assist the other development of discriminant studies.

In and around the Korean Peninsula 22 intraplate earthquake mechanisms since 1936 were analyzed to understand the regional stress orientation and tectonics. These 22 earthquakes are largest ones in this century and may represent the characteristics of earthquake in the region. Focal mechanism of earthquakes in the region show predominant strike-slip faulting with small amount of thrust components. The average P-axis is almost horizontal ENE- WSW. Studied data are compared with neighboring intraplate region in order to understand the tectonic regime in far est Asia. In northeastern China strike-slip faulting is dominant and nearly horizontal average P-axis in ENE- WSW is very similar with the Korean Peninsula. On the other hand in the eastern part of East Sea thrust faulting is dominant and average P-axis is horizontal with ESE- WSW This indicate that not only the subducting Pacific Plate in east but also the indenting Indian Plate controls earthquake mechanism in the far east of the Eurasian Plate.

Seismicity of the Korean Peninsula shows intraplate seismicity that has irregular pattern in both time and space. Seismic data of the Korean peninsula consists of historical earthquakes and instrumental earthquakes. In this study we devide these data into complete part and incomplete part and considering earthquake size uncertainty estimate seismic hazard parameters - activity rate λ, b value of Gutenberg-Richter relation and maximum possible earthquake IMAX by statistical method in each major tectonic provinces. These estimated values are expected to be important input parameters in probabilistic seismic hazard analysis and evaluation of design earthquake.

The microearthquake and explosion events recorded in the seismic KNUE(Korea National University of Education) network were analyzed. The seismic data were recorded from Dec. 1997 to Dec. 1998. Total of 118 records consisted of 24 earthquake and 4 explosion events were instrumented at 6 stations. Spectral values increases as magnitude increases and the predominant frequency band expands to low frequency. zone as magnitude increases. Three-dimensional spectrograms(time frequency. amplitude) were also synthesized in order to discriminate microearthquakes and artificial underground explosions. The waves from microearthquakes show that frequency content of dominant amplitude appeared above 10 Hz and the discrimination can be performed in almost all the frequency domain of 3-d spectrogram.

This paper presents a method of seismic analysis for a cylindrical liquid storage structure on horizontally layered half-space considering the effects of the interior fluid and exterior soil medium in the frequency domain. the horizontal and rocking motions of the structures are included in this study. The fluid motion is expressed in terms of analytical velocity potential function which can be obtained by solving the boundary value problem including the sloshing behavior of the fluid as well as deformed configuration of the structure. The effect of the fluid is included in the equation of motion as the impulsive added mass and a frequency-dependent convective added mass along the nodes on the wetted boundary with structure. The soil medium is presented using the 3-D axisymmetric finite elements and dynamic infinite elements. The present method can be applied to the structures embedded in ground as well as on ground since it models the soil medium directly as well as the structure. For the purpose of vertification dynamci characteristics of a tank on homogeneous half-space is analyzed. Comparison of the present results with those by others shows good agreement.

In this study a modified ground strain model is developed for an equivalent earthquake load and is applied to the seismic analysis of buried pipelines, The ground strain can be obtained using the ratio of a maximum ground velocity to a wave propagation velocity. To reflect soil conditions and seismic characteristics the wave propagation velocity is evaluated by a proposed dispersion curve based on wave energy distribution. In order to verify the procedures the observed earthquake data and the results of this study are compared. For the application of an equivalent earthquake load to the seismic analysis the buried pipelines are modeled using the beam theory. the results of the analyses are compared with those of a dynamic analysis code and those obtained from the response displacement method. Finally various parametric studies considering different soil conditions and seismic loads are examined.

In this study a base-isolated liquid storage tank subjected to seismic ground motion is numerically simulated on frequency , domain considering three-dimensional liquid-structure-soil interaction. A hybrid formulation which combines the versatility of finite elements for tank structure and the efficiency of boundary elements for liquid and soil region is adopted for efficient modeling. The base-isolation system using the effective stiffness and damping ratio is also included in this formulation. in order to demonstrate the accuracy and validity of the developed solution the numerical results were compared with the reference solutions in each interaction problem. The effects of the liquid filling ratio and the stiffness of base-isolation system on the behavior of the liquid storage tanks are analyzed.

This paper presents a time domain method for soil-structure interaction analysis for seismic loadings. It is based on the finite element formulation incorporating analytical frequency-dependent infinite elements for the far-field soil. The dynamic stiffness matrices of the far-field region formulated in frequency domain using the present method can be easily transformed into the corresponding matrices in time domain. Hence the response can be analytical computed in time domain. Example analysis has been carried out to verify the present method for an embedded block in a multi-layered half-space. The present methods can be easily extended to the nonlinear analysis since the response analysis is carried out in time domain.

When we design the large rockfill dams the safety of dams against the quake must be considered. Generally pseudostatic analysis method has been used for slope stability and evaluation of safety but the case of dynamic response analysis of earthquake was not in general in Korea. Therefore we need to perform the dynamic response analysis of rockfill dams from these results we analyze the dynamic behavior of dam body such as response displacement and response acceleration. consequently we analyse the selected model of rockfill dam using the FLAC-2D (FDM) program.

Several seismic design standards for fill dams adopted in Japan USA and Korea are reviewed in this study. The review on those standards is tried to provide a thinking way for a new seismic design standard which is urgently requested by the government I. e. the Ministry of Construction & Transportation and the Ministry of Science & Techniology. This study suggest that as a new seismic design standard of fill dam including concrete face rockfill dam(CFRD) the modified earthquake intensity method based on dynamic analysis be adopted in Korea while the dynamic analysis method should be used in evaluatiing the performance of fill dams precisely.

The SSI(Soil-Structure Interaction) analyses are being performed for the KNGR(Korean Next Generation Reactor) design because the KNGR is developed as a standard nuclear power plant concept enveloping various soil conditions. the SASSI program which adopts the flexible volume method is used for the SSI analyses. The soil curves used in the three dimensional SSI analyses of KNGR Nuclear Island(NI) structures are based on the upper bound shear modulus curve and lower bound damping degradation on SSI response the average shear modulus curve with average damping curve was used for two soil cases. This study presents the results of the variances by using different soil nonlinearity parameters based on the paametric SSI analyses. The results include the maximum member forces(shear and axial force) at the base of the NI structures and the 5% damping Floor Response Spectra (FRS) at some representative locations at the top of the NI superstructures. They are also compared together with the enveloped SSI results for eight soil cases and fixed-base analysis for rock case by using two control motions.

This paper presents a procedure for the frequency-domain analysis of a non-proportionally damped structure subjected to stationary seismic loads and for the finding of proper damper locations through simple analysis procedure without iteration. The shear areas of the dampers are decided in proportion to the magnitude of the components of the primary mode shape vector and to the root mean square values of the story drifts, The root-mean-squear responses are obtained using a power spectral density function for the ground acceleration. the results are compared with those obtained from damper placement decided in sequency based on the maximum story drift. According to the results the reliability of the proposed method turns out to be satisfactory compared to the methods which required iteration.

Intentionally weakened girders near the beam-to-colum connection lead ductile failures at the weakened points prior to potential brittle failure at the connection points subjected to strong earthquake. Recent research investigated cyclic behavior of composite beams with a rectangular web opening and find out ductile failure of such beams due to plastic hinge formation of T-section at the four corners of the rectangular opening. But eventual failures of T-sections are resulted from local buckling of T-section having a narrow stem and a narrow bound of plastic hinge formation. This continuing research proposes double-circular opening instead of rectangular one in ofter to improve energy dissipation capacity as well as composite beam strength, Experimental test of two specimens was carried out and its results are compared with those of nonlinear finite element analyses

The natural period calculation equations specified in the current building code are empirical formulas that depend on height and material type of the structure. Building with the upper wall and lower frame type is a unique structure which composed of two different structural system This type of structure needs either the deep transfer girder or the thick transfer plate that brings the sudden change of stiffness and mass. Therefore the natural period equations recommended by the current code can not be applied directly. In this study the natural period of building with typical plan obtained by dynamci analysis is compared with that of various codes. Ad approximate estimation equation for the natural period of building with the upper wall and lower frame type obtained by regression analysis is recommended. by the current code can not be applied directly. In this study the natural period of building with typical plan obtained by dynamic analysis is compared with that of various codes, And approximate estimation equation for the natural period of building with the upper wall and lower frame type obtained by regression analysis is recommended.

Six of scaled concrete circular columns were experimentally investigated for the contribution of arch action to the column lateral resistance. For this the specimens with the variation of tranverse hoop steel spacing were tested in absence of axial loading All specimens showed the flexure governing behavior pattern irrelevant to transverse hoop spacing. This indicates that the role of arch action should be understood as the intermediate mechanism causing the interaction between shear and flexural mechanisms A simple truss model was proposed to qualitatively explain this notation but further study is needed to advance its application to general columns.

Safety-related equipments of nuclear power plant must be seismically qualified to demonstrate their ability to function as required during and/or after the earthquake, The seismic qualification is usually achieved through analysis and testing. Analysis method is preferably adopted for structurally simple equipments which are easy to be mathematically modeled. However even for relatively complex equipments analysis method is occasionally used for computing the input motion or supporting information for the component test followed. Electrical cabinet is a typical example for which analysis method is combinedly used with test to get modal properties of the enclosing cabinet structure. Usually the structural elements and doors of the cabinet are loosely interconnected with small-size bolts or spot welding. Therefore cabinet-type equipment usually has high and complex nonlinear properties which are not easily idealized by simple practical modeling techniques. in this paper with respect to a typical cabinet-type structure(instrumentation cabinet of nuclear power plant) a comparative study has been performed between three different state-of-the -art modeling techniques: lumped mass model frame model and FEM modal. Form the study results it has been found that modal properties of the cabinet-type structure in the elastic behavior range can be reasonably computed through any type of modeling techniques in the practice with slight modification of model properties to get better accuracy. However it needs additional modeling techniques to get reasonable results up to nonlinear range.

effect of pounding and friction between oscillators upon global response behaviors of a bridge system under seismic excitations are examined in this study. For convenience an idealized mechanical model is proposed which still retains the dynamic characteristics of bridge motions using multiple oscillators, Each oscillator is consisting of four degrees-of-freedom to implement the pounding between the adjacent oscillators and friction at movable supports, The impact element and bi-linear model are utilized for pounding and friction at movable supports. The impact element and bi-linear model are utilized for pounding and friction respectively. Also the effects of abutments are investigated by adding the addition oscillators consisting of two degrees-of-freedom. The effects of pounding and frictions are determined using the proposed model and the effect of the abutment is also verified, It is found that both pounding and friction affect the bridge responses significantly while the first pounding occurs between the abutment and the nearby oscillator.

Threr are several methods in protecting the building structures from dynamic loads such as an earthquake and a wind. Among them applying a control force to the building structure is one of the methods to decrease the vibration. The most important and difficult problem in the active control is to obtain the mathematical model of the building structure with a controller. the effective active controller can be designed from the exact model of the system In this paper the three story test building with an active mass driver is identified experimentally. the system matrices corresponding to the experimental building are found and verified with the experimentally-obtained transfer functions and responses efficiently.

In this paper we investigated an applicability of earthquake regulations for seismic-isolated building structures which has been used currently and propose an efficient method for vertical distribution of seismic loads. The distribution of force is revised in UBC-94 as vertical distribution of force of UBC(Uniform Building Code)-91 is not sufficient safety but its distribution is inefficient expensive because of similar expression to fixed-based structures. In order to overcome this difficulties improved vertical distribution to fixed-based structures. In order to overcome this difficulties improved vertical distribution of seismic load is proposed using two degrees-of-freedom isolated structures and mode shape of fixed-based structures. Efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method are verified through analysis of an example structures with moment resisting frame and shear walls so this study approximate to dynamic analysis results in each case.

The Purpose of this paper is to evaluate the buckling strength of conceptually designed KALIMER reactor vessel. For evaluation of the buckling load buckling load the design equations and the finite element analysis are used. In finite element method the eigenvalue buckling analysis nonlinear elastic buckling analysis using snap-through buckling method and nonlinear elastic-plastic buckling analysis are carried out. the calculated buckling loads of KALIMER reactor vessel using the finite element method are in well agreement with those of the design equations. From the calculated results of buckling load in KALIMER rector vessel it is shown that the plasticity of vessel materials significantly affects the buckling load but the initial imperfection has little effects, In checking the limits of bucking load of KALIMER reactor vessel using the ASME B & PV Section III. Subsection NH the non-seismic isolation design can not satisfy the buckling limit requirements but the seismic isolation design can sufficiently satisfy the requirements.

As a seismic damper the viscoelastic damper is known the effective method to control the drift of the flexible building. As the viscoelastic damper has the characteristics of both damping and stiffness specially when the rubber material used hysteretic damping. The behavior of the hysteretic damping is quite different from that of the viscous damping. For the evaluation of the viscoelastic damper for the seismic purpose the nonlinear response spectrum was generated based on the dynamic test of the viscoelastic damper and the results is compared to that of the typical linear response spectrum,

A comparative study on aseismatic performances of various base isolation systems for the multi-span continuous bridge is carried out. Several leading base isolation systems the LRB system the RF system the R-FBI system and the EDF system are considered, The displacement of the deck the deformation of the upper ends of the piers the shear force and the bending moment of the lower ends of the piers are obtained by using the accelerograms of the N00W component of El Centro earthquake(1940) and the N90W component of Mexico City earthquake(1985) Nonlinear time-history analysis is carried out. comparisons of the results with the conventional bearing show that the base isolation systems are very effective in reducing the forces transmitted to the superstructures. Furthermore the results also show that the friction-type base isolation systems are less sensitive to unexpected variations in frequency content of the ground acceleration. The R-FBI system shows a good aseismatic performance comparing with other base isolation systems.

Active vibration control method for the reduction of vibration of structures have been developed. For the application of real structures active control system that has robustness must be designed because the mathematical model incompletely described has intrinsically modeling error. In this research we propose LQG/LTR method in designing control system with robustness. A combination of acceleration feedback and model-order reduction technique is used for the application of real structures and the computation efficiency. In case of such structures as the building and the tower the inter-story relative displacements represent an important constraint in seismic design. Therefore selection method of design parameters is also proposed in order to reduce the inter-story relative displacements.

The vibration control of bridge is studied considering the vibration characteristics of the Korean-type high-speed railway bridge. Fast nonlinear analysis is adopted as time integration method and the bridge and the train are modeled by FEM and sequentially moving constant forces respectively. Additional damping mechanism is indispensable to the Korean-type high-speed railway bridge because resonance vibration is excited under the maximum design speed. The optimal position and capacity of the damper is studied through the parametric studies, Transient vibration of the bridge is effectively controlled by such additional dampers which means that dampers play a role as structural damping. And also the maximum response of the bridge is reduced. Therefore it is verified that the increase of expected service life and the improvement of serviceability can be obtained through dampers.

The magnetoelastic interaction between electrically conducting structures and magnetic fields is suggested to be used as a possible means for vibration suppression mechanism in structural control. Effectiveness of the active control mechanism is demonstrated by an experiment which is performed to examine the basic tenets of magnetically induced vibration and magnetoelastic damping of a cantilevered beam virating in the presence of magnetic fields Experimental results show that the feedback control scheme works effectively. Several strategies are suggested to improve the controllability using the magnetic damping.

there is no earthquake resistant design code for the unreinforced masonary(URM) buildings in Korea. But it does not mean that all URM buldings in Korea is safe under the possible extent of an earthquake. The purpose of this study is in the inelastic analysis of unreinforced masonary walls with many different types of openings and carry out their ductilities an strengths, response modification factor of each wall has been compared and the most appropriate response modification factor for URM building in Korea has been proposed.

The base shear and the veritcal distribution of shears along the height of a building are two fundamental measures that define the design seismic load. But the method specified in Korean building code does not give an appropriate distribution for buildings of tall or longer period because it roughly account for the contributions of the higher modes. several methods to give a better distribution of seismic forces have been proposed. But they have not been introduced into the seismic codes yet probably because they cannot solve all the above-mentioned problems. This paper deals with the distribution of lateral seismic forces along the height of a building to account for the contribution of the higher modes. After reviewing some existing distributions in seismic codes and literatures moment-resisting frames with various stories were studied by modal analysis for a wide range of fundamental period and the stiffness ratio of the buiding. As a result of the analysis a new expression for the distribution of seismic forces is proposed and compared with those of some codes and dynamic analysis.

This paper studied the efficiency of retrofitting of reinforced concrete structure which was not designed to endure an earthquake. The earthquake in Kobe Japan showed that there was a great possibility of having an earthquake even in big city and the damages were concentrated on mid or low story buildings which were not considered to be protected from an earthquake, . This experiment used reinforced concrete structure which restrained side-by-side displacement to test durability against an earthquake. This study deals with the structural performance of reinforced concrete frame structures strengthened with steel materials.

In order to develop and enhance our methodology of seismic design in the next generation thee is a need to analyze the environment chronicles and concept of the seismic design in foreign countries. For this purpose we have researched the cases of U.S.A and Europe. In this paper the emphasis was put on the european seismicity and seismic design practices for building structures. In this study the comparison of seismic design codes in some european countries regarding fundamental period and design base shears leads to the conclusion that there exists remarkable difference in the approaches. Particularly the base shears used in european countries give larger values than the one proposed by UBC 97. Though each european country has established similar seismic design code there are also still large difference in the level of construction technology and societal implementation of seismic codes.

the devastating earthquake which occurred in Turkey on August 187, 1999, reminds again us the necessity of the preparedness for the earthquake hazard. the level of earthquake engineering in Koran is still low due to the short period of the research and development in this field. Therefore the most efficient way of promoting our technology in this field is considered to collect the information on the state of the art and practice developed in the advanced countries in earthquake engineering and to analyze the advantages and disadvantages and then reflect these to the new seismic codes. for this purpose this study reviews the concept and main characteristics of Eurocode 8 and the findings of many researches that have been performed for the improvement of EC8. Finally the seismic performance evaluation of the building structures designed according to EC8. and the relevant recommendations are summarized.

A four-story reinforced concrete frame building model is designed for the gravity loads. only Static nonlinear pushover analyses are performed in two orthogonal horizontal directions. The overall capacity curves are converted into ADRS spectra and compared with demand spectra. At several points the deformed shape moment and shear distribution are calculated. It is observed that the seismic capacity may not meet the design requirements in soft soil condition and may collapse in MCE. It is concluded that limited but adequate amount of ductility need be provided in the seismic design in low to moderate seismicity regions.

The seismic performance of multi-span bridge without seismic detailing is found to be insufficient in longitudinal direction. Shear keys and stoppers can be introduced as an alternative to enhance seismic capacity. The capacity curve of bridge with shear keys is obtained considering two extreme contact conditions of shear keys. Its curve is converted into ADRS spectra and compared with demand spectra. It is concluded that seismic performance can be improved effectively by shear keys and its performance can be evaluated graphically on the ADRS specta.

The purpose of this study is to compare the response of the high-strength concrete beam-column-slab subassembly with the response of a normal-strength concrete specimens. Four assemblies were designed 2/3 scale beam-column-slab joint(fc'=240kg/cm2 fc'=700kg/cm2) and tested to investigate seismic behaviour. From the test results 1) flexral cracks emerge to inside of bean deeply for high strength concrete member 2) the high-strength specimens represented stable hysteretic behaviour for the displacement ductility 5.5 but degradation in stiffness and strength and unstable hysteretic behaviors were observed owing to the brittleness of high-strength concrete beyond its range.

The base-isolation technology is to set up LRB between the base of a building and the ground to protect the building from seismic force. As Korea belongs to the region of moderate or weak seismicity it is more resonable to apply the base-isolation technology of LRB in the field of the response reduction of equipments under machine or transportation vibrations than in the field of seismic response reduction of buildings, In this paper small-scale LRB's designed for the response reduction of equipments are manufactured and tested for thier performance. The shaking table test is conducted to analyze the characteristics of LRB such as the variation of natural frequencies damping ratios and equipments responses.

This paper is a study on the seismic design and test of viscoelastic dampers in regions of moderate seismicity. First moderate seismic waves are generated with measured strong seismic data based on the theory of effective peak acceleration. Then their response spectrums are compared each other to estimate the required damping to attenuate the vibration. As relatively smaller damping is required in the regions of moderate seismicity than in the regions of strong seismicity proper viscoelastic dampers can be designed according to the estimated damping. Finally a test building model is designed and the viscoelastic dampers are installed for the experimental study under moderate and strong earthquakes, It is found that viscoelastic dampers with low damping capacity developed in this study are enough to reduce the building response in regions of moderate seismicity.

this paper focuses on the dynamic characteristics of full-scale viscoelastic dampers through the experimental study. Viscoelastic dampers which dissipate the response energy of a building under earthquake excitation make a role of increasing damping capacity of the building. Therefore it is important to recognize the damping behavior of viscoelastic dampers. Full-scale viscoelastic dampers are made of three types of rubbers for experimental test. The hysteretic behavior is obtained through the load-deformation experiment over the various loading frequencies and damper strains The experimental results show the good performance of viscoelastic dampers under earthquake excitations,

The fundamental vibration period of a shearwall apartments cannot estimate accurately by means of empirical formulas specified in present codes, The objective of this paper is to estimate the period of a shearwall apartments by microtremor measurement. A micretremor is the continuous small oscillation of the ground cause by traffic and operation machinery. Microtremors are extensively studied primarily in Japan to estimate conveniently subsurface structures of soil deposits and building vibrations. It is obtained the results that the fundamental periods estimated by microtremor measurement are shorter than those values by dynamic analysis of building.

There occurred a moderate size earthquake of M=5 at Whagae-Myun Hadong-Gun Kyongsangnam-Do of Korea, It caused severe damage to the buildings and other structures is Sang-Gye-Sa a famous and beautiful Buddhist Temple, The 5-story stone pagoda was standing in front of Keumdang. The top component tipped over and fell to the ground during the earthquake. In order to have accurate and quantitative estimate of the intensity of earthquake a full-scale replica is made through rigorous verification process, The completed model was mounted on the shaking table and subjected to th seismic tests. It was observed that the top component overturned at 0.16 G of EPGA when the NS component of the 1940 el Centro earthquake records was used as the input motion. A brief history of this project is presented and important test results are report6ed and their implication is discussed.

This experimental study investigates the hysterestic behavior of traditional timber frames subjected to lateral loads. Prototype frames for this study were selected from one of typical national treasures for timber structures in Korea. For simplicity roof structures and braket systems were excluded from specimens and the joint behavior of beam-to-column system were presumed to have crucial effect on their global behavior. The experimental observation showed stiffness degradation and slip after experiencing initial yield and the first cycle at a new larger displacement due to inherent gaps in traditional timber connection and gradual indentation of interfaces, The cyclic behaviors of all specimens were similar to those os modern timber frames with bolt and nail connections. Additional structural members such as an upper beam and clay-filled wall increased the initial stiffness strength and energy dissipation. It is expected that collapse of Korean traditional timber frames under lateral load is mainly caused from P-
$\Delta$ effects rather than local member failure.
