An area-efficient DC-DC voltage up-converter in a poly-Si TFT technology for system-on-glass is described which provides low-ripple output. The voltage up-converter is composed of charge-pumping circuit, comparator with threshold voltage mismatch compensation, oscillator, buffer, and delay circuit for multi-phase clock generation. The low ripple output is obtained by multi-phase clocking without increasing neither clock frequency nor filtering capacitor The measurement results have shown that the ripple on the output voltage with 4-phase clocking is 123mV, while Dickson and conventional cross-coupled charge pump has 590mV and 215mV voltage ripple, respectively, for $Rout=100k\Omega$, Cout-100pF, and fclk=1MHz. The filtering capacitor required for 50mV ripple voltage is 1029pF and 575pF for Dickson and conventional cross-coupled structure, for Iout=100uA, and fclk=1MHz, while the proposed multi-phase clocking DC-DC converter with 4-phase and 6-phase clocking requires only 290pF and 157pF, respectively. The efficiency of conventional and the multi-phase clocking DC-DC converter with 4-phase clocking is $65.7\%\;and\;65.3\%$, respectively, while Dickson charge pump has $59\%$ efficiency.
The 1Gbps clock and data recovery (CDR) circuit using the proposed multi-point phase detector (PD) is presented. The proposed phase detector generates up/down signals comparing 3-point that is data transition point and clock rising/falling edge. The conventional PD uses the pulse width modulation (PWM) that controls the voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) using the width of a pulse period's multiple. However, the proposed PD uses the pulse number modulation (PNM) that regulates the VCO with the number of half clock cycle pulse. Therefore the proposed PD can controls VCO preciously and reduces the jitter. The CDR circuit is tested using 1Gbps $2^{31}-1$ pseudo random bit sequence (PRBS) input data. The designed CDR circuit shows that is capable of recovering clock and data at rates of 1Gbps. The recovered clock jitter is 7.36ps at 1GHz and the total power consumption is about 12mW. The proposed circuit is implemented using a 0.18um CMOS process under 1.8V supply.

A delay-locked loop (DLL) that generates a 32-phase clock with the operating frequency of 125 MHz is introduced. The proposed DLL uses a delay line of $4{\times}8$ matrix architecture to improve a differential non-linearity (DNL) of the delay line. Furthermore, a integral non-linearity (INL) of the proposed DLL is improved by calibrating phases of clocks that is supplied to four points of an input stage of the $4{\times}8$ matrix delay line. The proposed DLL is fabricated by using $0.11-{\mu}m$ CMOS process with a 1.2 V supply. The measured operating frequency range of the implemented DLL is 40 MHz to 280 MHz. At the operating frequency of 125MHz, the measurement results shows that the DNL and INL are +0.14/-0.496 LSB and +0.46/-0.404 LSB, respectively. The measured peak-to-peak jitter of the output clock is 30 ps when the peak-to-peak jitter of the input clock is 12.9 ps. The area and power consumption of the implemented DLL are $480{\times}550{\mu}m^2$ and 9.6 mW, respectively.

This paper describes a delay-locked loop (DLL) that generates a 64-phase clock with the operating frequency of 125MHz. The proposed DLL use a $4{\times}8$ matrix-based delay line to improve the linearity of a delay line. The output clock with 64-phase is generated by using a CMOS multiplex and a inverted-based interpolator from 32-phase clock which is the output clock of the $4{\times}8$ matrix-based delay line. The circuit for an initial phase lock, which is independent on the duty cycle ratio of the input clock, is used to prevent from the harmonic lock of a DLL. The proposed DLL is designed using a $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS process with a 1.8 V supply. The simulated operating frequency range is 40 MHz to 200 MHz. At the operating frequency of a 125 MHz, the worst phase error and jitter of a 64-phase clock are +11/-12 ps and 6.58 ps, respectively.

Bus architecture of SoC has been replaced by NoC in recent years. Noc uses the multi-clock domains to transmit and receive data between neighbor network interfaces and they have same frequency, but a phase difference because of clock skew. So a synchronizer is used for a mesochronous frequency in interconnection between network interfaces. In this paper the metastability is defined and analyzed in a D latch and a D flip-flop to search the possibilities that data can be lost in the process of sending and receiving data between interconnects when a local frequency and a transmitted frequency have a phase difference. 180nm CMOS model parameter and 1GHz are used to simulate them in HSpice. The simulation results show that the metastability happens in a latch and a flip-flop when input data change near the clock edges and there are intermediate states for a longer time as input data change closer at the clock edge. And the next stage can lose input data depending on environmental conditions such as temperature, processing variations, power supply, etc. The simulation results are very useful to design a mescochronous synchronizer for NoC.

In a delay line type of a time-to-digital converter implemented in Field Programmable Gate Array, the timing accuracy decreases for a longer carry chain. In this paper, we propose a structure that has a multi-phase clock and a state machine to check metastability; this would reduce the required length of the carry chain with the same time resolution. To reduce the errors caused by the time difference in the four delay lines associated with a four-phase clock, the proposed TDC generates a single input pulse from four phase clocks and uses a single delay line. Moreover, the state machine is designed to find the phase clock that is used to generate the single input pulse and determine the metastable state without a synchronizer. With the measurement range of 1 ms, the measured resolution was 22 ps, and the non-linearity was 25 ps.
A phase-locked loop (PLL)-based frequency synthesizer is proposed for a system on a chip (SoC) using multi-frequency clock signals. The proposed PLL-based frequency synthesizer consists of a charge pump PLL which is implemented by a phase frequency detector (PFD), a charge pump (CP), a loop filter, a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), and a frequency divider, and an edge combiner. The PLL outputs a 12-phase clock by a VCO using six differential delay cells. The edge combiner synthesizes the frequency of the output clock through edge combining and frequency division of the 12-phase output clock of the PLL. The proposed PLL-based frequency synthesizer is designed using a 55-nm CMOS process with a 1.2-V supply voltage. It outputs three clocks with frequencies of 166 MHz, 83 MHz and 124.5MHz for a reference clock with a frequency of 20.75 MHz.
The proposed clock generator lowers the operating frequency in a system core though it keeps data bandwidth high because it has a multiphase clocking architecture. Moreover. it has a dual loop which is comprised of an inner analog phase generation loop and outer digital phase control loop. It has both advantages of DLL's wide operating range and DLL's low jitter The proposed design has been demonstrated in terms of the concept and Hspice simulation. All circuits were designed using a 0.25${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ CMOS process and simulated with 2.5 V power supply.

This paper describes a phase-locked loop (PLL) that generates a 51-phase clock with the operating frequency of 125MHz. To generate 51-phase clock with a frequency of 125 MHz, the proposed PLL uses three voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) which are connected by resistors. Each VCO consists of 17 delay-cells. An resistor averaging scheme, which makes three VCOs to connect with each other, makes it possible to generates 51-phase clock of the same phase difference. The proposed PLL is designed by using 65 nm CMOS process with a 1.0 V supply. At the operating frequency of 125 MHz, the simulated DNL and peak-to-peak jitter are +0.0016/-0.0020 LSB and 1.07 ps, respectively. The area and power consumption of the implemented PLL are $290{\times}260{\mu}m^2$ and 2.5 mW, respectively.

A structure which transmits and receives 3 subscribers packet data through an optical splitter node in an optical subscriber network of PON wave suggested and realized. All the functions which are necessary to use PON structure such as 155.52Mb/s multiplexer/demultiplexer of down-stream signal, 25.92Mb/s multiplexer/demultiplexer of up-stream signal, frame synchronizer, and phase aligner for aligning phase of the clock and received data have been integrated within 2 ICs using CMOS technonology. TDMAtechnology was suggested for up-stream transmission. In the optical up-stream transmission of the urst signals transmissionquality degradataion by APC and AGC of optical tranceiver was observed. By compensating the degradation, more than 17dB of link budget which is enough to satisfy 11.2dBthat is required in SWAN of PON architecture has been obtained with optical transceiver whose power and sensitivity are -17dBm and -34dBm respectively.
