  • Two frequency synthesizers are proposed to generate a clock for a sub-sampler of an on-chip oscilloscope in this paper. These proposed frequency synthesizers are designed by using a multi-phase delayed-locked loop (DLL)-based phase selector and a fractional-N phase-locked loop (PLL), and they are analyzed by comparing simulation results of each frequency synthesizer. Two proposed frequency synthesizers are designed using a 65-nm CMOS process with a 1V supply and output the clock with the frequency of 121.15 MHz when the frequency of an input clock is 125 MHz. The designed frequency synthesizer using a multi-phase DLL-based phase selector has the area of 0.167 $mm^2$ and the peak-to-peak jitter performance of 2.88 ps when it consumes the power of 4.75 mW. The designed frequency synthesizer using a fractional-N PLL has the area of 0.662 $mm^2$ and the peak-to-peak jitter performance of 7.2 ps when it consumes the power of 1.16 mW.

  • In this paper, an optimized residual data decoder architecture is proposed to improve the performance in H.264/AVC. The proposed architecture is an integrated architecture that combined parallel inverse transform architecture and parallel inverse quantization architecture with common operation units applied new inverse quantization equations. The equations without division operation can reduce execution time and quantity of operation for inverse quantization process. The common operation unit uses multiplier and left shifter for the equations. The inverse quantization architecture with four common operation units can reduce execution cycle of inverse quantization to one cycle. The inverse transform architecture consists of eight inverse transform operation units. Therefore, the architecture can reduce the execution cycle of inverse transform to one cycle. Because inverse quantization operation and inverse transform operation are concurrency, the execution cycle of inverse transform and inverse quantization operation for one $4{\times}4$ block is one cycle. The proposed architecture is synthesized using Magnachip 0.18um CMOS technology. The gate count and the critical path delay of the architecture are 21.9k and 5.5ns, respectively. The throughput of the architecture can achieve 2.89Gpixels/sec at the maximum clock frequency of 181MHz. As the result of measuring the performance of the proposed architecture using the extracted data from JM 9.4, the execution cycle of the proposed architecture is about 88.5% less than that of the existing designs.

  • This paper proposes a built-in-self-repair (BISR) structure using 2-dimensional spare memory to effectively self-repair faults of an embedded memory. In case of multiple faults in the same row (column) of an embedded memory, the previous method using 1-D spare column (row) memory needs the same number of spare memory columns (rows) as the number of faults to self-repair them. while the new method using 2-D spare memory needs only one spare row (column) to self-repair them. Also, the virtual divided memory is adopted to be able to self-repair using not a full spare column memory but the only partial spare column memory corresponding to the faults. A self-repair circuit with $64\times1-bit$ core memory and $2\times8$ 2-D spare memory is designed. And the circuit includes a built-in-self-test block using the 13N March algorithm. The circuit has been implemented using the $0.25{\mu}m$ MagnaChip CMOS process and has $1.1\times0.7mm^2$ chip area with 10,658 transistors.

  • This paper proposes a programmable PLL (phase locked loop) based clock generator supporting a wide-range-frequency input and output for high performance and low power SoC with multiple clock frequencies domains. The propose system reduces the locking time and obtains a wide range operation frequency by using a dual-charge pumps scheme. For low power operation of a chip, the locking processing circuits of the proposed PLL doesn't be working in the standby mode but the locking data are retained by the DAC. Also, a tracking ADC is designed for the fast relocking operation after stand-by mode exit. The programmable output frequency selection's circuit are designed for supporting a optimized DFS operation according to job tasks. The proposed PLL-based clock system has a relock time range of $0.85{\mu}sec{\sim}1.3{\mu}sec$($24\~26$cycle) with 2.3V power supply, which is fabricated on $0.35{\mu}m$ CMOS Process. At power-down mode, PLL power saves more than $95\%$ of locking mode. Also, the PLL using programmable divider has a wide locking range ($81MHz\~556MHz$) for various clock domains on a multiple IPs system.

  • In this paper, a read-in integrated circuit (RIIC) for IR scene projectors (IRSPs) adopting a sub-frame control technique is proposed, which minimizes the reduction of the apparent temperature of the IR images projected from IRSPs operating at a frame rate of 30 Hz. The proposed sub-frame control technique significantly reduces the amount of scene data loss on capacitors, which is caused by leakage currents flowing through MOSFET switches during holding periods, by dividing a unit frame into 8 sub-frames and refreshing the same scene data for each sub-frame. A current-drive RIIC was designed for the higher apparent temperature of IR radiated from the emitter, and it receives the scene data as a form of analog voltages from an external DAC. A prototype chip with a $64{\times}32$ RIIC array was fabricated using Magnachip/SKhynix $0.35{\mu}m$ 2-poly 4-metal CMOS process, and the measured maximum output data current is $230.3{\mu}A$. This amount of current ensures the projection of IR images whose maximum apparent temperature is $366.2^{\circ}C$ in the mid-wavelength IR (MWIR) when applied to a prototype emitter having a resistance of $15k{\Omega}$.

  • This paper describes a 3 to 5 GHz frequency synthesizer for MB-OFDM (Multi-Band OFDM) UWB (Ultra- Wideband) application using 0.13 ${\mu}m$ CMOS process. The frequency synthesizer operates in the band group 1 whose center frequencies are 3432 MHz 3960 MHz, and 4488 MHz. To cover the overall frequencies of group 1, an efficient frequency planning minimizing a number of blocks and the power consumption are proposed. And, a high-frequency VCO and LO Mixer architecture are also presented in this paper. A new mixed coarse tuning scheme that utilizes the MIM capacitance, the varactor arrays, and the DAC is proposed to expand the VCO tuning range. The frequency synthesizer can also provide the clock for the ADC in baseband modem. So, the PLL for the ADC in the baseband modem can be removed with this frequency synthesizer. The single PLL and two SSB-mixers consume 60 mW from a 1.2 sV supply. The VCO tuning range is 1.2 GHz. The simulated phase noise of the VCO is -112 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset. The die area is 2 ${\times}$ 2mm$^2$.

  • A discrete-time(DT) filter with high-order temporal moving average(TMA) using actively-weighted charge sampling is proposed in this paper. To obtain different weight of sampled charge, the variable transconductance OTA is used prior to charge sampler, and the ratio of charge can be effectively weighted by switching the control transistors in the OTA. As a result, high-order TMA operation can be possible by actively-weighted charge sampling. In addition, the transconductance generated by the OTA is relatively accurate and stable by using the size ratio of the control transistors. The high-order TMA filter has small size, increased voltage gain, and low parasitic effects due to the small amount of switches and sampling capacitors. It is implemented in the TSMC $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS process by TMA-$2^2$. The simulated voltage gain is about 16.7 dB, and P1dB and IIP3 are -32.5 dBm and -23.7 dBm, respectively. DC current consumption is about 9.7 mA.

  • A hardware implementation of ultra-lightweight block cipher algorithm PRESENT which was specified as a standard for lightweight cryptography ISO/IEC 29192-2 is described. The PRESENT crypto-processor supports two key lengths of 80 and 128 bits, as well as four modes of operation including ECB, CBC, OFB, and CTR. The PRESENT crypto-processor has on-the-fly key scheduler with master key register, and it can process consecutive blocks of plaintext/ciphertext without reloading master key. In order to achieve a lightweight implementation, the key scheduler was optimized to share circuits for key lengths of 80 bits and 128 bits. The round block was designed with a data-path of 64 bits, so that one round transformation for encryption/decryption is processed in a clock cycle. The PRESENT crypto-processor was verified using Virtex5 FPGA device. The crypto-processor that was synthesized using a $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS cell library has 8,100 gate equivalents(GE), and the estimated throughput is about 908 Mbps with a maximum operating clock frequency of 454 MHz.

  • This paper proposes a fast-transient digital LDO(Low dropout) regulator with binary-weighted current control technique. Conventional digital LDO takes a long time to stabilize the output voltage, because it controls the amount of current step by step, thus ringing problem is generated. Binary-weighted current control technique rapidly stabilizes output voltage by removing the ringing problem. When output voltage reliably reaches the target voltage, It added the FRZ mode(Freeze) to stop the operation of digital LDO. The proposed fast response digital LDO is used with a slow response DC-DC converter in the system which rapidly changes output voltage. The proposed digital controller circuit area was reduced by 56% compared to conventional bidirectional shift register, and the ripple voltage was reduced by 87%. A chip was implemented with a $0.18{\mu}F$ CMOS process. The settling time is $3.1{\mu}F$ and the voltage ripple is 6.2mV when $1{\mu}F$ output capacitor is used.

  • A hardware implementation of ultra-lightweight block cipher algorithm PRESENT that was specified as a block cipher standard for lightweight cryptography ISO/IEC 29192-2 is described in this paper. Two types of crypto-core that support master key size of 80-bit are designed, one is for encryption-only function, and the other is for encryption and decryption functions. The designed PR80 crypto-cores implement the basic cipher mode of operation ECB (electronic code book), and it can process consecutive blocks of plaintext/ciphertext without reloading master key. The PR80 crypto-cores were designed in soft IP with Verilog HDL, and they were verified using Virtex5 FPGA device. The synthesis results using $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS cell library show that the encryption-only core has 2,990 GE and the encryption/decryption core has 3,687 GE, so they are very suitable for IoT security applications requiring small gate count. The estimated maximum clock frequency is 500 MHz for the encryption-only core and 444 MHz for the encryption/decryption core.
