This study focuses on the near-field vortical structure and dynamics of coaxial jets. The characteristics of laminar flow and mixing in coaxial jets are investigated using a unsteady flow simulation. In order to analyze the geometic effects on the vortical structure, several cases of different configurations are selected for various values of the velocity ratio of inner jet to outer jet. From the result, it is confirmed that mixing is promoted by the development of vortical structure and the interaction between inner jet and outer jet. This feature is strongly related to the vortex frequency in the shear-layers. The vortex frequency depends on the velocity ratio and the lip thickness of inner nozzle, but the outer pipe length has no effect on the frequency variation.

Glass particle distribution in a stirred solid/liquid systems was investigated using computational fluid dynamics(CFD). The numerical results were compared to experimental data from the available literature which investigated the local dispersed phase volume fraction by means of an endoscope technique. Eulerian multi-phase model and applications considered high loading of solid particle was used to investigate the influence of the particle concentration and mixing tank size on the solid distribution. A good agreement was obtained between the experimental data and simulation results. The results showed different solid particle distribution in an agitator by particle concentration and mixer size.

A similarity solution of the Navier-Stokes equation for the axisymmetric stagnation flow near a plane wall coated with a magnetic fluid of uniform thickness is constructed. The shape functions representing the flow in two (magnetic and normal) fluid layer are determined from a third order boundary value problem, which is solved by the Runge-Kutta method with two shooting parameters. Features of the flow including streamline pattern and interface velocity are investigated for the varying values of density ratio, viscosity ratio, and Reynolds number. The results for the interface and wall shear stress, boundary layer and displacement thickness are also presented.

In the present work, flow analysis has been performed for side channel type double stage ring blower by solving three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation. Shear stress transport model is used as turbulent closure. The commercial CFD code CFX 11.0 is used for the calculations. Each of two stage is calculated separately and the second stage inlet flow is same as the first stage outlet flow so that consecutive calculation is possible. Velocity and pressure fields have been analyzed at the midplane between blades. The numerical results are validated with experimental data for head coefficients at different flow coefficients.

The quality of chaotic mixing in three-dimensional micro channel flow has been numerically studied using Fractional-step method (FSM) and particle tracking techniques such as
$Poincar{\acute{e}}$ section and Lyapunov exponents. The flow was driven by pressure distribution and the chaotic mixing was generated by applying alternating current to electrodes embedded on the bottom wall at a first half period and on the top wall at a second half period. The equations governing the velocity and concentration distributions were solved using FSM based on Finite Volume approach. Results showed that the mixing quality depended significantly on the modulation period. The modulation period for the best mixing performance was determined based on the mixing index for various initial conditions of concentration distribution. The optimal values of modulation period obtained by the particle tracking techniques were compared with those from the solution of concentration distribution equation using FSM and CFX software and the comparison showed their good match. -
The screech tone of an underexpanded jet is numerically calculated without any specific modeling for the screech tone itself. A fourth-order optimized compact scheme and fourth-order Runge-Kutta method are used to solve the 2D axisymmetric Euler equation. The Fourier transform of pressure signal at upstream shows the directivity pattern of the screech tone very clearly. Pressure signal is shown to observe the generation of the screech tone. Most importantly, we can simulate the axisymmetric mode change of the screech tone very precisely with the proposed method. It can be concluded that the basic phenomenon of the screech tone including its frequency can be calculated and its mode change can be simulated with inviscid Euler equations.

Separation control has been performed using synthetic jets on airfoil at high angle of attack. Computed results demonstrated that stall characteristics and control surface performance could be substantially improved by resizing separation vortices. It was observed that the actual flow control mechanism and flow structure is fundamentally different depending on the range of synthetic jet frequency. For low frequency range, small vortices due to synthetic jet penetrated to the large leading edge separation vortex, and as a result, the size of the leading edge vortex was remarkably reduced. For high frequency range, however, small vortex did not grow up enough to penetrate into the leading edge separation vortex. Instead, synthetic jet firmly attached the local flow and influenced the circulation of the virtual airfoil shape which is the combined shape of the main airfoil with the separation vortex. Theses results show the characteristic of unsteady flow of single synthetic jet. Beside, we researched on multi-array synthetic jet to obtain applicable synthetic jet velocity. Multi-location synthetic jet is proposed to eliminate small vortex on suction surface of airfoil. With the results, we concluded that the flow around airfoil is stable by high frequency synthetic jet with elimination of small vortex and confirmation of stable flow. Moreover, performance of multi-array/multi-location synthetic jet can be improved by changing phase angle of multi-location synthetic jet.

The present paper describes the results of performance analysis for UH-60A rotor blade in hover. For the numerical simulations, commercial CFD software, FLUENT was used with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model. The flow solver was based on node based scheme and second order spatial accuracy options was used for simulations. For the enhancement of wake capturing capability, high resolution grid was used around tip vortex region. Granting that somewhat over prediction of thrust was observed near blade tip region, performance was well correlated with experimental data within 3% accuracy in the operating region. Finally it was shown that the present flow solver can be used for preliminary performance analysis tool for hovering helicopter rotor blades.

In this paper, helicopter aerodynamics is simulated in hovering and forwarding flighst. The governing equation is the unsteady Euler equation. To consider the blade motion and moving effects, an overset grid technique is applied in this simulation. At the boundary, the Riemann invariants condition is used for inflow and outflow. To validate this method, the result is compared with Caradonna-Tung's experimental data.

A cleaner has trouble with too much noise and power consumption. To solve these problems, the investigation for motors, which are the main component of vacuum cleaner, is required. However, it is difficult to analyze the flow by the experimental means because of the high speed of the fan rotation ranging from 30,000 rpm to 50,000 rpm. Moreover it takes much time to perform the numerical simulation for the flow. In this research, it is aimed to analyse the flow through the centrifugal fan which is believed to be a main noise source, by the computational method. The efficiency of the centrifugal fan is affected by friction loss, shock loss and so on. Those losses depend on factors like the velocity of impeller, blade shape and etc. Accordingly, the influence of the shape of impeller on the flow is investigated in this study. The computational analysis was done by changing impeller shapes. The flow around the centrifugal fan is simulated by applying the moving mesh. To verify the validity of the computation results, the air flow rate and the pressure field to the cleaner is compared with the experimental data. All simulations are performed by using commercial code SC/Tetra. The calculated results show good agreement with the experimental ones qualitatively and it is believed to be promising to use computational simulation in the improvement of the vacuum cleaner performance.

In the shape design optimization of an airfoil, the shape function has been used to find the optimal airfoil shape for given conditions. The parameters determining the airfoil shape are used in the shape design optimization as design variables. However, they usually don't have physical meaning. The PARSEC (Parametric Shapes) function is a recently proposed shape function and its parameters have the physical meaning. In this study the usefulness of the PARSEC is tested for the RAE2822 airfoil in the transonic flow region to reduce the shock strength and the result is compared with Hicks-Henne function. The optimized airfoils reduce the shock strength and they show similar result.

In this paper, optimization of the vaned centrifugal compressor was carried out at a given mass flow rate condition. Firstly, impeller optimization was conducted using response surface method (RSM) which is one of optimization methods. After the optimization of the impeller was completed, diffuser optimization was performed with the optimized impeller. In these processes, Navier-Stokes solver was used to calculate the flow inside the centrifugal compressor. And the optimization is performed with Box-Behnken design method which is efficient for fitting second-order response surfaces to reduce the number of calculations required. As a result, compared with the reference model, the efficiency and the pressure ratio of the optimized impeller and diffuser are found to be increased. The performance at off-design conditions is presented.

A new design approach for a delicate treatment of complex geometries such as a wing/body configuration is arranged using overset mesh technique under large scale computing environment for turbulent viscous flow. Various pre- and post-processing techniques which are required of overset flow analysis and sensitivity analysis codes are discussed for design optimization problems based on gradient based optimization method (GBOM). The overset flow analysis code is validated by comparing with the experimental data of a wing/body configuration (DLR-F4) from the 1st Drag Prediction Workshop (DPW-I). In order to examine the applicability of the present design tools, careful design works for the drag minimization problem of a wing/body configuration are carried out by using the developed aerodynamic shape optimization tools for the viscous flow over multiple-body aircraft geometries.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the Finite Element Method (FEM) are used to perform aerodynamics analysis and structure analysis. For the fluid-structure interaction analysis, each technology should be considered as well. The process of aerodynamics-structure coupled analysis can be applied to various integrated analyses from many research fields. In this study, the aerodynamics-structure coupled analysis is performed for the missile at high angle of attack condition through the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the Finite Element Method (FEM). For this purpose, the aerodynamics-structure coupled analyses procedure for the missile are established. The results of the integrated analysis are compared with rigid geometry of the missile and the effect of the deformation will be addressed.

In this paper, a flow visualization analysis has been carried out on an oscillating square section cylinder, numerically, using a commercially available code CFD-ACE. In this study, the square cylinder is forced to oscillate at different frequencies of excitation, viz., fe/fo=0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 (where, fe is the excitation frequency provided to the cylinder and fo is the natural vortex shedding frequency from the stationary cylinder at a particular Reynolds number (=5200). In all the cases, the peak-to-peak amplitude of oscillation is kept at 32% of the side dimension of the square cylinder. These studies are conducted to understand the influence of frequency of oscillation on the flow field features around the cylinder, particularly the mode of vortex shedding. Results indicate that, the flow field around a square cylinder is very much influenced by the excitation frequency, in particular the vortex shedding mode. It is also found that, the vortex street parameters are significantly influence by the oscillation frequency. Comparison with earlier reported experimental studies has also been attempted in this paper. In appears that, such a numerical exercise (as performed in this paper) is first of its kind. It is believed that, these studies would enable one to understand the mechanisms underlying the flow-induced vibrations of a square section cylinder.

This paper represents the numerical study on Taylor flow according to the radius ratio and the angular velocity for flow between tow cylinder. The numerical model is consisted of two cylinder which inner cylinder is rotating and outer cylinder is fix, and the axial direction is used the cyclic condition because of the length for axial direction is assumed infinite. The diameter of inner cylinder is assumed 86.8 mm, the numerical parameters are angular velocity and radius ratio. The numerical method is compared with the experimental results by Wereley, and the results are very good agreement. The critical Taylor number is calculated by theoretical and numerical analysis, and the results is showed the difference about
${\pm}10\;%$ . As$Re/Re_c$ is increased, Taylor vortex is changed to wavy vortex, and then the wave number for azimuthal direction is increased. Azimuthal wave according to the radius ratio is showed high amplitude and low frequence in case of small radius ratio, and is showed low amplitude and high frequence in case of large radius ratio. -
Nonlinear parabolized stability equations for compressible flow in general curvilinear coordinate system are derived to deal with a broad range of transition prediction problems on complex geometry. A highly accurate finite difference PSE code has been developed using an implicit marching procedure. Blasius flow is tested. The results of the present computation show good agreement with DNS data. Nonlinear interaction can make the T-S fundamental wave more unstable and the onset of its amplitude decay is shifted downstream relative to linear case. For nonlinear calculations, rather small difference in initial amplitude can produce large change during nonlinear region. Compressible secondary instability at Mach number 1.6 is also simulated and showed that 1.1% initial amplitude for primary mode is enough to trigger the secondary growth.

We present an immersed boundary (IB) method for 3D simulation of flappingflags in a uniform flow. The proposed formulation is manipulated on the basis of an efficient Navier-Stokes solver adopting the fractional step method and a staggered Cartesian grid system. A direct numerical method is developed to calculate the flag motion, with the elastic force treated implicitly. The fluid motion defined on an Eulerian grid and the flag motion defined on a Lagrangian grid are independently solved and the mass of flag is handled in a natural way. An additional momentum forcing is formulated from the flag motion equation in a way similar with the direct-forcing IB formulation and acts as the interaction force between the flag and ambient fluid. A series of numerical tests are performed and the present results are compared qualitatively and quantitatively with previous studies. The instantaneous flag motion is analyzed under different conditions and surrounding vortical structures are identified. The effects of physical parameters on the flapping frequency are studied.

A three-dimensional inviscid flow solver has been developed based on unstructured meshes for the simulation of steady and unsteady flowfields around a generic fighter aircraft and for the investigation of the aerodynamic interference between the external stores and the tail surfaces. The flow solver is based on a vertex-centered finite-volume method and an implicit point Gauss-Seidel relaxation scheme. To validate the flow solver, calculations were made for a steady flow and the computed results were compared with experimental data. An unsteady time-accurate computation of the generic fighter aircraft with external stores at transonic flight conditions showed that the external stores cause undesirable vibration on the horizontal tail surface due to the mutual interference between their wake and the horizontal tail surface. It was shown that downward deflection of the trailing edge flap significantly reduces the undesirable interference effect.

The prediction of the safe separation of the external stores carried on military aircraft is an important task in the aerodynamic design area having the objective to define the operational, release envelopes. The major concern of this study is only safe jettison problem with ejections. This work consists of concept and some results for external store configurations. A Computational Fluid Dynamics technique is applied to calculate the aerodynamic forces. The FLUENT with an implicit Euler solver is used for the present simulations. The computational results are validated against the experimental data.

In the present study, the pressure coefficient of a cubic building model is numerically simulated. Three turbulence models of standard
${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ , RNG${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ and LES are adopted and the results are compared with the available experimental data. From the results, it has been found that RNG${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and LES turbulence model were shown to predict fairly well the experimental pressure coefficient. In contrast, the results of the standard${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model showed large discrepancies in pressure coefficient on the side and top surfaces of the cubic building, which limits the applicability of the standard${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model on wind engineering. -
In the present paper, wall correction method is reviewed and applied to the numerical experimental results obtained at the wind tunnel condition. The corrected lift coefficient agrees well with the reference data generated from the grid having very far boundary. However the corrected drag coefficient presents some deviation from the reference data.

Supersonic viscous flow over a 5 degree half angle cone studied computationally with three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. Steady asymmetric solutions of 5-deg half angle cone show that the asymmetric flow separation is caused by convective instability. The angle of attack, Reynolds number, and Mach number affected the side force variation that is caused by asymmetric vortical flow.

Compressible flow characteristics in a butterfly valve is studied experimentally and numerically. The disk angle of the valve is changed as
$0^{\circ}{\sim}30^{\circ}$ . The SST model is used to represent the turbulent effect in the commercial code, CFX11. It was found that the numerical results are similar to the experimental ones, general discussions are given to the pressure distributions upon the disk angle of the valve. -
The flight vehicles have cavities such as wheel wells and bomb bays. The flow around a cavity is characterized as unsteady flow because of the formation and dissipation of vortices due to the interaction between the freestream shear layer and cavity internal flow, the generation of shock and expansion waves. Resonance phenomena can damage the structures around the cavity and negatively affect aerodynamic performance and stability. In the present study, numerical analysis was performed for cavity flows by the unsteady compressible three dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with Wilcox's
${\kappa}\;-\;{\omega}$ turbulence model. The cavity has the aspect ratios of 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 for two-dimensional case, same aspect ratios with the W/D ratio of 2 for three-dimensional case. The Mach and Reynolds numbers are 0.53 and 1,600,000 respectively. The flow field is observed to oscillate in the "shear layer mode" with a feedback mechanism. Based on the SPL(Sound Pressure Level) analysis of the pressure variation at the cavity trailing edge, the dominant frequency was analyzed and compared with the results of Rossiter's formula. The MPI(Message Passing Interface) parallelized code was used for calculations by PC-cluster. -
IB (immersed boundary) method is one of the prominent tool in computational fluid dynamics for the analysis of flows over complex geometries. The IB technique simplyfies the solution procedure by eliminating the requirement of complex body fitted grids and it is also superior in terms of memory requirement. In this study we have developed numerical code (FOTRAN) for the analysis of 2D flow over a cylinder using IB technique. The code is validated by comparing the wake lengths and separation angles given by Guo et. al. We employed fractional-step procedure for solving the Navier-Stokes equations governing the flow and discrete forcing IB technique for imposing boundary conditions. Also we have developed a 3D code for the backward-facing-step flow and flow over a sphere. The reattachment length in backward-facing-step flow was compared with the one given by Nie and Armaly, which has proven the validity of our code.

A methodology for the simulation of compressible high Reynolds number flow over rigid and moving bodies on a structured Cartesian grid is described in this paper. The approach is based on a modified version of the Brinkman Penalization method. To avoid oscillations in the vicinity of the body and to simulate shcok-containing flows, a Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory scheme is used to discretize the spatial flux derivatives. For high Reynolds number viscous flow, two turbulence models of the two-equation Menter's SST URANS model and a two-equation Detached Eddy Simulation are implemented. Some simple flow examples are given to assess the accuracy of the technique. Finally, a moving grid capability is demonstrated.

Both the bubble rising in a fully filled container and the droplet splash are simulated by a solution code(PowerCFD). This code employs an unstructured cell-centered method based on a conservative pressure-based finite-volume method with interface capturing method (CICSAM) in a volume of fluid(VOF) scheme for phase interface capturing. The present results are compared with other numerical solutions found in the literature. It is found that the present code simulate complex free surface flows such as multi phase flows due to large density difference efficiently and accurately.

This paper is a continuation of the recent development on the hermite-based divergence free basis function and deals with a non-isothermal fluid flow thru the buoyancy driven flow in a square cavity with temperature difference across the two sides. The basis functions for the velocities consist of the hermite function and its curl. However, the basis for the temperature are the hermite function and its gradienst. Hence, the number of degrees of freedom at a node becomes 6, which are the stream function, two velocities, the temperature and its x- and y-derivatives. Numerical results for the streamlines, the temperatures, the x-velocities and the y-velocities show good agreements with those of De vahl Davis[7].

COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) is a geostationary satellite and has been developing by KARI for communication and ocean and meteorological observations. It will be launched by ARIANE 5. Ka-band components are installed on South panel, where single solar array wing is mounted. Radiators, embedded heat pipes, external heat pipe, insulation blankets and heaters are utilized for the thermal control of the satellite. The Ka-band payload section is divided several areas based on unit operating temperature in order to optimize radiator area and maximize heat rejection capability. Other equipment for sensors and bus are installed on North panel. The ocean and meteorological sensors are installed on optical benches on the top floor to decouple thermally from the satellite. A comprehensive numerical study was carried out to identify the on-set condition of the cell structures of oblique detonation waves (ODWs). Mach 7 incoming flow was considered with all other flow variables were fixed except the flow turning angles varying from 35 to 38. For a given flow conditions theoretical maximum turning angle is
$38.2^{\circ}$ where the oblique detonation wave may be stabilized. The effects of grid resolution were tested using grids from$255{\times}100$ to$4,005{\times}1,600$ . The numerical smoked foil records exhibits the detonation cell structures with dual triple points running opposite directions for the 36 to 38 turning angles. As the turning angle get closer to the maximum angle the cell structures gets finer and the oscillatory behavior of the primary triple point was observed. The thermal occlusion behind the oblique detonation wave was observed for the$38^{\circ}$ turning angle. -
A theoretical and numerical investigation is performed on the flow in a micronozzle for precision-controlled seal dispenser. The working fluid is a highly viscous epoxy used as sealant in producing LCD panels, which contains a number of tiny solid spacers. Flow analysis is conducted in order to achieve the optimal design oj internal geometry of a nozzle. A simplified design analysis methodology is proposed for predicting the flow in the nozzle based on the assumption that the Reynolds number is much less than O(1). The parallel numerical computations are performed by using a CFD package FLUENT. Comparison discloses that the theoretical model gives a good prediction on the distribution of pressure and wall shear stress in the nozzle. However, the theoretical model has a difficulty in predicting the maximum wall shear stress as found in a limited region near edge by numerical computation. The theoretical and numerical simulations provide the good guideline for designing a dispensing micronozzle.

A three-dimensional (3D) unstructured hydrodynamic solver for transient two-phase flows has been developed. A two-fluid three-field model was adopted for the two-phase flows. The three fields represent a continuous liquid, an entrained liquid, and a vapour field. The hydrodynamic solver is for the 3D component of a nuclear system code and the component-scale analysis tools for transient two-phase flows. The finite volume method and unstructured grid are adopted, which are useful for the flows in a complicated geometry. The semi-implicit ICE (Implicit Continuous-fluid Eulerian) numerical scheme has been adapted to the unstructured non-staggered grid. This paper presents the numerical method and the preliminary results of the calculations. The results show that the numerical scheme is robust and predicts the phase change and the flow transitions due to boiling and flashing problems well.

A high resolution numerical method aimed at solving gas-liquid two-phase flow is proposed and applied to gas-liquid two-phase shock tube problem. The present method employs a finite-difference 4th-order Runge-Kutta method and Roe's flux difference splitting approximation with the MUSCL TVD scheme. By applying the homogeneous equilibrium cavitation model, the present density-based numerical method permits simple treatment of the whole gas-liquid two-phase flow field, including wave propagation and large density changes. The speed of sound for gas-liquid two-phase media is derived on the basis of thermodynamic relations and compared with that by eigenvalues. By this method, a Riemann problem for Euler equations of one dimensional shock tube was computed. Numerical results such as detailed observations of shock and expansion wave propagations through the gas-liquid two-phase media and some data related to computational efficiency are made. Comparisons of predicted results and exact solutions are provided and discussed.

A particle method recognized as one of the gridless methods has been developed to investigate the nonlinear free-surface motions interacting to the structures. The method is more feasible and effective than convectional grid methods for solving the non-linear free-surface motion with complicated boundary shapes. The right-handed side of the governing equations for incompressible fluid, which includes gradient, viscous and external force terms, can be replaced by the particle interaction models. In the present study, the developed method is applied to the dam-broken problem on dried- and wet-floor and its adequacy will be discussed by the comparison with the experimental results.

In this paper, we researched a parametric study in flow control system using louver with numerical method. Generally, for the large fans with constant rotational speed, the louver can be used to control the flow rate. The opening and closing of louver can make a some change of flow properties generated by a large fan. To develope the relation between the opening angle of louver and flow rate(or pressure difference), we simulated the flow past the modelled louver installed in a virtual wind tunnel. For the various angles, the mean flow properties are investigated and parameterized with a given boundary condition. The research result can be used directly to design the flow control system of large constant-speed fans, which are often applied to petrolic refinery system.
