  • Phytases are hydrolytic enzymes that catalyze the sequential hydrolysis of phytic acid (myo-inositol-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexakisphosphate) to myo-inositols with lower numbers of phosphate groups. Two types of phytases have been identified which initiate hydrolysis of the phytic acid at either the 3- or 6- position of the inositol ring. In the present investigation, a mathematical model was proposed and computed to estimate maximum enzyme reaction rate constants which fit the experimental data obtained by other authors. Although the data points were scattered to some extent, good agreement was found between the model and the experiment data. It appears that the maximum rate constants of removal of the first, second, and third phosphate groups were not equal. Also there was neither a steady trend upward or downward in the rate constants with the stepwise hydrolysis reactions.

  • The removal rates of gross production and organic matters were investigated in the Lake Paldangho. In 1995 and 1996, soils and litter sarraples were collected and annual mean production and removal rates were calculated. Communities in the Lake Paldangho were Phragrnites communis, Miscanthus sacchariflorus, Typha aegustata and Scirpas tahernaemoutani. Removal constants of aquatic plant communities estimated by the mathematical theoretical models, were 0.826, 0.567, 0.571 and 0.751, respectively. The durations of reaching half of initial organic amounts were 0.839 yeras, 1.221 years, 1.213 years and 0.922 years respectively at the steady state of removal and accumulation for organics For organics, the rapidity of removal were more speedy P. communis, S.tahernaemontani, T. augustata, M sacehariflorus in order. The times needed for 99% removal were 6.051 years, 6.651 years, 8.752 years and 8.811 years, respectively. • With the advent of lean-six sigma era, an extensive use of analytic tools such as control charts is required in the field of manufacturing. In relation to statistical quality control (SQC) or process control (SPC), the Korean standards have undergone a meaningful change. In this study, the theoretic backgrounds for evaluating the control limits in connection with the variable control charts are examined in view of better understanding the related constants and coefficients. This paper is intended to help the quality control practitioners understand the mathematical backgrounds by comparing related quality control constants and also to encourage them to make use of and to take the advantage of the variable control charts which are very useful for implementing the concept of lean-six sigma in many industrial sites.

  • Consider a Sobolev inner product on the space of polynomials such as $$ \phi(p,q) = \lambda p(c)q(c) + <\tau,p'(x)q'(x)> $$ where $\tau$ is a moment functional and c and $\lambda$ are real constants. We investigate properties of orthogonal polynomials relative to $\phi(\cdot,\cdot)$ and give necessary and sufficient conditions under which such Sobolev orthogonal polynomials satisfy a spectral type differential equation with polynomial coefficients.

  • Multigrid methods for two first-order system least squares (FOSLS) using bilinear finite elements are developed for the pure traction problem of planar linear elasticity. They are two-stage algorithms that first solve for the gradients of displacement, then for the displacement itself. In this paper, concentration is given on solving for the gradients of displacement only. Numerical results show that the convergences are uniform even as the material becomes nearly incompressible. Computations for convergence rates are included.

  • Stability result is obtained for the approximation of the stationary Stokes problem with nonconforming elements proposed by Douglas et al [1] for the velocity and discontinuous piecewise constants for the pressure on qudrilateral elements. Optimal order $H^1$and $L^2$error estimates are derived.

  • In a Finsler space, we introduce a special $(\alpha,\beta)$-metric L satisfying $L^2(\alpha,\beta) = c_1\alpha^2 + 2c_2\alpha\beta + c_3\beta^2$, which $c_i$ are constants. We investigate the Berwald connection in a Finsler space with this special $\alpha,\beta)$-metric.

  • Let ${X, X_n, n \geq 1}$ be a sequence of independent and identically distributed(i.i.d) random variables with EX = 0 and $E$\mid$X$\mid$^p < \infty$ for some $p \geq 1$. Let ${a_{ni}, 1 \leq i \leq n, n \geq 1}$ be a triangular arrary of constants. The almost sure(a.s) convergence of weighted sums $\sum_{i=1}^{n} a_{ni}X_i$ can be founded in Choi and Sung[1], Chow[2], Chow and Lai[3], Li et al. • In this paper, we will investigate the existence of positive solutions to the predator-prey interacting system $$ {-\varphi(x, u)\Delta u = uf(x, u, \upsilon) in \Omega {-\psi(x, \upsilon)\Delta\upsilon = \upsilon g(x, u, \upsilon) {\frac{\partial n}{\partial u} + ku = 0 on \partial\Omega {\frac{\partial n}{\partial\upsilon} + \sigma\upsilon = 0. $$ in a bound region $\Omega$ in $R^n$ with smooth boundary, where $\varphi$ and $\psi$ are strictly positive functions, serving as nonlinear diffusion rates, and $k, \sigma > 0$ are constants.

  • In this paper, we give a sharp estimate on the cardinality of the set generating the convex hull containing the image of harmonic maps with polynomial growth rate on a certain class of manifolds into a Cartan-Hadamard manifold with sectional curvature bounded by two negative constants. We also describe the asymptotic behavior of harmonic maps on a complete Riemannian manifold into a regular ball in terms of massive subsets, in the case when the space of bounded harmonic functions on the manifold is finite dimensional.
