  • This study examined the effects of simulation-based practice on competence and satisfaction in nursing students. We collected the data from 189 4th grade nursing students. Simulation-based practice was conducted from August 28th to November 27th, 2015. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS 21.0 program. As the result of simulation-based practice, significant improvement was found in competence (t=-14.42, p<.001) and satisfaction($4.53{\pm}.58$). Simulation-based practice can help students to improve their overall abilities in clinical practices and increase their satisfaction in result. Therefore we suggest that more systematic and continual simulation-based practice should be applied in nursing education.

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the effectiveness of an integrated nursing curriculum based on simulation with problem-based learning (PBL) by comparing the clinical competence and the self-confidence of newly graduated nurses. A non-equivalent control group post-test design was employed to compare the clinical competence and the self-confidence in the clinical performance examination using standardized patients between 39 newly graduated nurses with the traditional nursing curriculum and 35 with the integrated nursing curriculum. Data analysis involved Fisher's exact test, t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and ANCOVA with the SPSS 19.0 program. The total clinical competence mean score graded by the standardized patients was not different between the two groups. However, the total clinical competence mean score graded by faculty was significantly higher in the integrated curriculum group than the traditional curriculum group. The mean self-confidence score was significantly higher in the integrated curriculum group than the traditional curriculum group. Active teaching-learning strategies including simulation or PBL in the nursing curriculum could benefit for nursing students by inducing favorable clinical competence and self-confidence. Longitudinal follow-up studies based on observation are needed to explore the patient outcomes in addition to the learner outcomes in clinical settings.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the effects of simulation education integrated with problem based learning (SIM-PBL) on clinical competency and self-efficacy in post operation nursing care for children. Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental design. Thirty six students in the third year of a 4-year baccalaureate nursing program were recruited conveniently and assigned to the control or intervention groups using time difference. Students were all in a pediatric nursing clinical practicum. The control group received the regular clinical practicum in a hospital setting. For the intervention group, a SIM-PBL education replaced 150 minutes of their clinical practicum. Results: The intervention group showed greater improvement in two areas of clinical competency compared with the control group; physical assessment (t= 3.019, p=.005) and post operation advice (t=2.428, p=.021). However, no statistically significant differences in improvement in any areas of self-efficacy were found between two groups. Conclusion: The results indicate that the SIM-PBL education is effective in improving some areas of clinical competence, but not self-efficacy in post operation nursing care for children. Further study is needed to develop SIM-PBL programs for various clinical topics and evaluate the effectiveness on the learning outcomes.
