This study was carried out for analysing the relationship of environmental factors and the reduction rate of land compensation of six urban development projects near waste landfill sites located in the Seoul metropolitan area. For a close investigation, 24 variables were selected but only 4 environmental variables were identified to have high correlation to the reduction rate of compensation. These are fine particles(PM10), bad smell, the ratio of a greening zone of land and park, and the distance in straight line from the landfill site. Two variables-PM10 and bad smell-were found to have an effect on the average reduction rate of land compensation by correlation analysis. On the other hand, the ratio of a greening zone and the distance in straight line from the landfill site have been rejected for the significance test. The result of regression analysis of six models for the search of affecting variables on the reduction rate of compensation is that PM10 and bad smell have the impact ratio of more than 0.5. But the ratio of greening zone and the distance from the landfill are not significant factors, having the impact ratio of 0.025~0.045 except one model.

Many Korean palaces such as Deoksu Palace and Kyungbok Palace are located in downtown Seoul. Modern high-rise buildings around the palace have been the background scenery of traditional architecture in it. In this case, such landscapes mixed with traditional images and contemporary images can give a negative impression to visitors watching from inside the palace. In this study, we analysed the correlation between landscape image of Deoksu Palace and trees' view blockage of buildings around it with three independent variables. The first variable is completely blocked view of buildings around the palace by the trees. The second variable is half-blocked view of buildings around the palace by the trees. The third variable is the view of buildings around the palace that is not blocked by the trees. The analysis showed that there were some significant correlations between landscape image of Deoksu Palace and trees' view blockage of buildings around it. It also showed that the view blockage ratio by the trees has positive correlation with improvement of landscape image of the palace.

In order to provide basic data for designing the outdoor exercise environment to promote the health of the citizens, this study has analyzed the status of citizens' use of outdoor exercise places that have been supplied extensively recently and the factors affecting the citizens' choice of the places. A survey was made on 20 spots in 12 places where outdoor exercise equipment is installed to identify the characteristics of use and the factors affecting the selection of the spots and for the 1,733 survey sheets collected finally SPSS program was used to analyze the multiple answers. Major results of this research are as follows: First, since light exercise equipment mostly for bodily exercises has been installed, it has brought practical effects for the physically weak people, aged people and the people who scarcely exercise, while decreasing the users' economic burdens. Second, the scales of important factors the users think in selecting their exercise spots were 'spaciousness (2,028 times)' > 'accessibility (1,751 times)' > 'fitness (1,583' > 'supportability (1,445)' > 'community centeredness (1,260).' Third, the ratios of important factors regarding the choice of environment of outdoor exercise were 'near to walk (16.1%)' > 'nice natural environment (12.3%)' > 'always free to exercise (9.7%)' > 'shortage of exercise equipment (7.4%)' > 'possible to accompany family/neighbors (6.7%)' > 'no economic burden (6.5%).

This paper is intended to deduce the planning elements of Eco-village through theory contemplation and preceding researches in order to be used as practical data of resident participating Eco-village by contemplating characteristics demonstrated in planning element utilization methods within the village. Resident participating Eco-village aims for residents who will reside in the relevant village to participate from village plans to construction. Unlike other Eco-village, residents of resident participating Eco-village make decisions autonomically through planning direction, planning elements, discussions and meetings, which are uniquely distinctive from other Eco-villages. It appears, however, that analysis on the planning element utilization methods of resident participating Eco-village is inadequate. There are various methods of village resident participation, and the methods cannot rule out the close relationship with planning elements. Hence, programs for resident participation should be devised at the time of village planning. Resident participating Eco-village should suggest measures and guidelines through finding problems in order to implement sustainable and environment-friendly life that prevent a retrograde step.

Many countries have run their own certification systems in order to reduce the environmental loads from buildings. Domestically, various systems are applied according to building types from Building Energy Efficiency Rating System since 2001 to Green Home Construction Standard and Performance since 2009. However, these systems provide the applicants with confusion and waste by exposing them to several systems simultaneously, some of which are mandatory. Therefore, this study aims to ensure the flexibility among those systems and eliminate the possible waste by suggesting mutual accreditation method of evaluation results. To achieve this purpose, firstly, the thirteen similar evaluation items are identified between Housing Performance Grading Indication System and Green Building Rating System. Then, the mutual accreditation method is developed by comparing detailed evaluation criteria and credits for those thirteen items.

As climate change and environmental degradation become more evident, the public's concern and knowledge on sustainable development requires planners to have regards to social impacts and long term economic viability, as well as environmental impacts. The main objective of this study is to analyze existing sustainability assessment tools for single detached houses. The most widely used oversea tools are selected. From analysis on the existing assessment tools, "Impact Estimator" by Athena Institute, "Bees 4.0" by NIST, "CASBEE for Home" by JSBC, "Envest for Housing" by Energy Saving Trust, "LISA" by Center for Sustainable Technology, "SBTool" by iiSBE (International Initiative for Sustainable Built Environment), it can be seen that the current sustainability assessment programs are in need of much improvement. The selected programs are analyzed on scope of program setting & running, data input & output, assessment categories, and strength & weakness. This study is to supplement the existing sustainability assessment tools for single detached houses, and provide information for the development of web-based program to assist architects or home owners to plan sustainable houses in Korea in the schematic design stage.

To analyze changes in the water-balance before and after using decentralized rainwater management facilities, this study carried out hydrologic modeling based on data including roof planting, rainwater use, infiltration and detention facilities applied to the sites. The results of the analysis are as follows: First, the total runoff quantity after facility installation was about 24% less than before. In particular, it showed that the surface runoff declined significantly. Second, the analysis of the effects of different decentralized rainwater management facilities revealed that the rooftop planting contributed to about a 3.5 times increase in actual evaporation than before. Third, the analysis of the effect of decentralized management facilities by different rainfall events showed that it turned to have about a 30% decreasing effect after facility installation for a monthly rainfall over 500mm or so and about 50% declining effect for a monthly rainfall about 200mm. As discussed above, the study confirmed that it is important to implement decentralized rainwater management facilities to improve inevitable changes in water-balance arising from development as it would be a significant alternative for sustainable urban development.

Recently environmental regulations like the Kyoto Protocol, adopted in 1997, required the reduction of the greenhouse gas of 5.2% up to 1990's emissions and 13th General Assembly in 2007, held in Bali of India, have agreed to duty reduction even in developing countries in 2013. Korean government needs research on climate change and greenhouse gas management, such as carbon emissions calculation system and the introduction of greenhouse gas reduction program. Using Top-Down approach with method of IPCC, greenhouse gas emissions from energy, transportation, agriculture, land use and forest, and waste was calculated. Total amount from Shiheung-City in 2007 was about 3,299.581 tons of greenhouse gas $CO_2$. By sectors, the total greenhouse gas emissions in the energy sector mostly accounted for 78 percent, 12 percent from transportation, 6 percent of waste, the landuse/forest sector, 4% of the greenhouse gas emissions. Approximately 5,401,618 tons of the greenhouse gas $CO_2$ was total amount from Ansan-City in 2007. The share of energy sector greenhouse gas emissions was the highest portion of 79 % and 14 percent of transportation, 4% from the waste sector, 3 % from landuse/forest sector.

In Korea, the ratio of population in urban areas used to be only 50.1% in 1970, but with the value risen to 90.8% in 2009, urbanization is going on rapidly. Urbanization, which occurs by the rampantly planted buildings, has become major source of raising building density, changing wind direction and reducing wind amount, and such reductions are affecting even inside the building. In each year, among the total energy consumption in Korea, residential portion takes up significant ratio, and specifically the ratio of apartment house is shown to be highest. In order to solve such problem, many studies are being conducted for the improvement of natural ventilation performance. The natural ventilation performance of apartment house are significantly determined by the characteristics of external and internal structure, but in macroscopic perspective, the performance is established fundamentally by the layout characteristics of the main building of the apartment house in preparation for wind conditions. So far researches on raising the thermal comfort through elevation of ventilation performance have been conducted actively, but many of them propose only theoretical concepts deduced through wind path analysis, and do not include any indicator to measure ventilation performance simply only with area data from layout planning stage. Therefore, in this study, gap ratio a wind field measuring indicator was developed, and after the ventilation characteristics by layout types and main building uniformity were identified, the scope of gap ratio efficient for ventilation and that of uniformity were clarified, followed by verification through simulation.

This study has observed 12 parks (20 spots) in Seoul to know the number of users, gender, age groups for the units of 30 minutes from 06:00AM till 10:00PM. According to the systematic characteristic of the surveyed outdoor exercise place, the details of their users during the summer time were analyzed from the objective viewpoint. Major results of analysis are as follows: Firstly, in case of the riverside of the Han River 07:00AM marked a mini peak and 21:00PM reached the peak, and in case of sub-stream neighborhoods, 21:00PM showed only one peak. On the other hand, in case of neighborhood parks (including pocket park) no peak time was noticeable. Secondly, in case of the riverside of the Han River and the neighborhoods of sub-streams, people used the exercise equipment remarkably at night, and in case of neighborhood parks people used the exercise equipment a little bit more in the morning than in the afternoon. Thirdly, in case of nights in summer the riverside of the Han River was preferred by men, while the neighborhoods of sub-streams were preferred by women and the neighborhood parks showed no difference in the number of users among men and women. Fourthly, differently from men, women do not regard the exercise so seriously as men and their purpose of using outdoor exercise place is to use their leisure time mostly with their family members or neighbors, and women prefer light and comfortable exercises. Fifthly, in summer even those who like to exercise a lot like to exercise in the morning to avoid summer heat. Therefore, provision of shades in summer is very important.

The purpose of this study is to measure the environmental effects of different alternative building materials. The following building materials were tested: clay bricks, cement wall, and red-clay plaster. Four mock-up models were constructed using clay bricks, cement wall, red-clay plaster and the last model as the control model. The effects of the above four building materials on temperature, humidity, the emissions of formaldehyde, and V.O.C were measured. This experiment was conducted during September. The conclusions are as follows. Clay bricks were able to control temperature, humidity and filter formaldehyde by itself. The environment within the cement wall was not affected by the humidity changes outside. Red-clay plaster walls had little impact on the environment because it is very thin.!

Over the years, there have been many school construction projects resulting from the activation of the Build Transfer Lease(BTL). Furthermore, due to the need for the qualitative expansion of educational facilities, as well as the attempt to fulfill social requirements and the need for eco-friendly learning environments, these projects have become a major priority. As a result, the government has established a proper standard for school construction based on a certain level of green certification that has been mandated. The aim of this study is to assess the status of schools as relates to the composition of the ecological environment surrounding them. These elements of eco-friendly school facilities are larger than the educational environment and are directly related to the environmental and educational effects on the students. Looking at the overall results of this study, the areas of ecological environment outside school are found to be inadequate. Therefore, this field needs to adopt more realistic goals, and focus on the areas where the most improvement is needed.

Aims of this study is to investigate the daylighting control strategy of venetian blind system was performed as a function of ratio of shading height to window and slat angles in the preliminary stage of the parametric study. Floor-to-ceiling window walls of living spaces are used widely in apartment buildings since the Korean government has legally allowed elimination of the balcony area. Enlarging living area by balcony elimination, the larger glass area of window is exposed to the direct sunlight. As a common sunlight controlling device, blind system can be used in all orientations and all latitudes and it may obstruct, absorb, reflect and transmit solar radiation to building by proper adjusting. However, blind system can produce discomfort in occupant and less energy efficiency, if it has not been controlled optimally. The simulation model was based on the unit module of typical living space with balcony elimination. The room dimension was $6.0m(w){\times}6.9m(d){\times}2.7m(h)$ with floor to ceiling height of 2.5m. The blind system was simulated at five slat angles (horizontal, $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ upward and downward tilted) and the four ratio of shading height to window (fully closed, partly opened, no-blind) using the Desktop RADIANCE 2.0 program. The series of simulation results indicates that the advantages of available daylight and outside of view can be improved by proper adjusting blind system.

About 30% of the total annual energy consumption on the earth is used in the architectural activities, including construction, maintenance management, and demonstration of a building. Also, 40% of the natural resource consumption, 50% of $CO_2$ emissions, and 20%~50% of industrial waste emissions are produced from a building. Unfortunately, the percentage of its energy consumption is staidly increasing year by year, about 8% every year, and it recently causes a sustainable architectural concept to come to the fore globally. Indeed, the importance of the sustainable architecture is increasingly becoming a worldwide trend. BIM(Building Information Modeling) is considered a new paradigm and a powerful method in building design, construction and maintenance. BIM has characteristics similar to a building's systems. All of the components in a model have a parametric relationship to each other. Understanding and capitalizing on these interrelationships typically takes numerous iterations that span multiple projects. Optimizing the integrated strategies and technologies for a high-performance, sustainable design requires a continual look at understanding how they work together to deliver the best potential. Throughout all of these concepts, we are going to be using a variety of tools that revolve around a BIM model. Some of the tools will require a heavier use of BIM than others, but all of them will utilize the model geometry you've created as part of your design. This study presents importance and validity of energy performance analyzation in the pre-design phase for the sustainable architecture with the support of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology.

BIM based design methodology requires more information than traditional design methodology in order to insure efficiency throughout the project. BIM based design not only requires all building data in the form of 3D shapes, but also all other relevant data regarding building components. Information is typically grouped in a standard classification system such as by standardized material names. The development of a domestic BIM based standard classification system is yet to be created and deployed in the industry. Each designer is specifying their own building information classification systems which is causing inconsistency in the industry. Therefore BIM based designs, are causing confusion in the industry as each designer follow no guidelines for material standardization classification. The lack of information regarding this in the BIM template will continue to cause confusion about a projects building information data consistently. This study is that of preliminary research to develop a BIM template. First, overseas BIM templates were analyzed regarding BIM standards and documentation. Examination then followed regarding the element and characteristics needed for the development of a BIM template, a suggested hierarchy of elements required for a BIM template were then made. The result of this research is that it will be used to develop a "BIM template prototype", to support the generation of building information data regarding neighborhood facilities.
