This paper presents a lateral stability control for rear wheel drive (RWD) vehicles using electronic limited slip differentials (eLSD). The proposed eLSD controller is designed to increase the understeer characteristic by transferring torque from the outside to inside wheel. The proposed algorithm is devised to improve the lateral responses at the steady state and transient cornering. In the steady state response, the proposed algorithm can extend the region of linear cornering response and can increase the maximum limit of available lateral acceleration. In the transient response, the proposed controller can reduce the yaw rate overshoot by increasing the understeer characteristic. The proposed algorithm has been investigated via computer simulations. In the simulation results, the performance of the proposed controller is compared with uncontrolled cases. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can improve the vehicle lateral stability and handling performance.

Fog is a phenomenon caused by condensation of water vapor in the atmosphere, which is when very fine drops of water float in the atmosphere and the distance of visible is less than 1km. Fog dispersion technology is a technology that removing or weakening fog by using artificial methods to reduce damage caused by fog. It is applied differently depending on the temperature of fog generation rather than the cause of fog. This study conducted an experimental study on the fog dispersion mechanism in order to minimize damage caused by fog on the road, and studied two methods of over-cooling dispersion using solid-carbon-dioxide as a dissipated particle and dissipating fog particles through thermal acoustic waves. As a result the two methods proved experimentally that were capable of dissipating fog.

Flexural resistance evaluation of FFC (Flexible Flat Cable) was performed according to the grain size of rolled copper foil by adding 0.1wt% silver (Ag) and electrodeposited copper foil by slitting method after heat-treatment. These methods are aimed at enhancing the flexural durability of the FFC by growing the grain size of copper foil. By increasing the grain size of the copper foil and minimizing the miss-orientation at grain boundaries, the residual stress at the grain boundaries of the copper foil is reduced and the durability of the FFC is improved. Maximizing an average grain size of copper foil can be got a good solution in order to enhance the durability of the FFC or FPCB (Flexible Printed Circuit Board).

Although the number of domestic electric vehicle registrations exceeded 100,000 in the first half of 2020, legal and institutional concerns for maintenance and management are insufficient. In particular, the existing automobile maintenance business and qualification holders are not prohibited from performing electric vehicle maintenance without additional qualifications or training under the current laws. In this study, we review the current status of Korean laws and regulations, examine discussions abroad such as the UK, the US, and Germany, and then discuss desirable laws and institutional reform. This study proposes to temporarily reorganize the system in a way that separates the electric vehicle maintenance business and the electric vehicle maintenance qualifications from conventional vehicle.

Composite material is very attractive because it has excellent mechanical property and is possible to lightweight due to the low density. However, composite material is less used compared to other systems in the chassis system because it is very hard to solve NVH problem when composite material is applied to vehicle. Especially, reducing squeal noise of composite brake system is essential to apply it to vehicle successfully. In this paper, we present a new solution to reduce squeal noise of composite brake system. To achieve this goal, we analyze main causes of noise using RCA (Root Cause Analysis), CA (Contradiction Analysis) and sequentially get IFR (Ideal Final Result) to solve the problem. Next, we define the function of composite brake system and derive control factors and noise factors. A variety of tests for factors like chamfer, slot, damping shim, underlayer of brake pad are done. In addition, we analyze level of contribution for control factors theoretically. Finally, we get the effective solution for reducing squeal noise.

The number of big traffic accident cases of pedestrian death appeared to be minor, however compared to death rate in car to car accidents is very high and quite a few of the pedestrian death rates among all traffic accidents are counted to be almost 40%. Previous pedestrian safety studies were mostly aimed at reducing the degree of pedestrian injuries from a vehicle to pedestrian collision, and less at preventing a collision itself. This research was conducted with a method of using road facilities to prevent vehicles from rushing into the sidewalk. This research used one of the collision analyzing programs, called PC-Crash to simulate the vehicle rushing into the sidewalk. Based on the program, it could derive an optimal safe zone location where the pedestrian can wait for the pedestrian light safely. Also, changing road facilities such as pedestrian light pillars or signal controllers can widen 440% compared to the present safe zone. Accordingly, researchers have to consider a method to analyze and apply pedestrian safe zones along with road facilities location when designing a road.

This study is a study to estimate the VSL (Value of a Statistical Life) and CBA (Cost-benefit analysis) of the rollover safety standard for hydrogen buses, VSL is an economic value concept used to quantify the benefits of avoiding death. CBA shows the effect of cost-benefit, and if B/C is greater than 1, there is a social effect. In order to estimate the VSL and CBA, the hydrogen bus introduction scenario was assumed to be optimistic (20,000 vehicles in 2030), neutral (15,000 vehicles in 2030), and pessimistic (10,000 vehicles in 2030), and the effect of reducing human casualties was estimated. As a result, except for the pessimistic market situation of introducing hydrogen buses (10,000 vehicles in 2030) and the VSL reduction ratio of 10%, all policies were judged to have high cost-benefit effects. These results indicate that the introduction of the rollover safety standard for hydrogen buses is a socially effective policy.

Diesel engines emit PM and NOx during combustion. This is the main culprit of fine dust, which seriously affects the atmospheric environment. In particular, large-sized diesel vehicles over 3.5 tons emit a greater amount of pollutants because of their large displacement. The occurrence of vehicle abnormalities in this large-scale diesel vehicle causes even greater problems in the atmospheric environment. It was confirmed that there were many problems caused by natural regeneration DPF among large-sized diesel vehicles. Therefore, the most effective maintenance plan is suggested.

Invisible passenger airbag door system of hard panel types must be designed with a weakened area such that the side airbag will deploy through the instrument panel as like intended manner, with no flying debris at any required operating temperature. At the same time, there must be no cracking or sharp edges in the head impact test. If the advanced airbag with the big difference between high and low deployment pressure ranges are applied to hard panel types of invisible passenger airbag (IPAB) door system, it becomes more difficult to optimize the tearseam strength for satisfying deployment and head impact performance simultaneously. It was introduced the 'Operating Window' idea from quality engineering to design the hard panel types of IPAB door system applied to the advanced airbag for optimal deployment and head impact performance. Zigzab airbag folding and 'n' type PAB mounting bracket were selected.

Although accident data from the National Police Agency and insurance companies do not know the vehicle safety, the damage level information can be obtained from the data managed by the bus credit association or the bus company itself. So the accident severity was analyzed based on the side impact accidents using accident repair cost. K-means clustering analysis separated the cost of accident repair into 'minor', 'moderate', 'severe', and 'very severe'. In addition, the side impact accident severity was analyzed by using an ordered logit model. As a result, it is appeared that the longer the repair period, the greater the impact on the severity of the side impact accident. Also, it is appeared that the higher the number of collision points, the greater the impact on the severity of the side impact accident. In addition, oblique collisions of the angle of impact were derived to affect the severity of the accident less than right angle collisions. Finally, the absence of opponent vehicle and large commercial vehicles involved accidents were shown to have less impact on the side impact accident severity than passenger cars.

Recently a traffic accident of heavy duty vehicles under the mandatory installation of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) is often reported in the media. Heavy duty vehicle accidents are normally occurring a high number of passenger's injury. According to report of Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, FCW (Forward Collision Warning) and AEB (Automatic Emergency Braking) were associated with a statistically significant 12% reduction in the rate of police-reportable crashes per vehicle miles traveled, and a significant 41% reduction in the rear-end crash rate of large trucks. Also many countries around the world, including Korea, are studying the effects of ADAS installation on accident reduction. Traffic accident statistics of passenger vehicle for business purpose in TMACS (Traffic safety information Management Complex System in Korea) tends to remarkably reduce the number of deaths due to the accident (2017(211), 2018(170), 2019(139)), but the number of traffic accidents (2017(8,939), 2018(9,181), 2019(10,095)) increases. In this paper, it is introduced a traffic accident case that could lead to high injury traffic accidents by being equipped with AEB in a bus. AEB reduces accidents and damage in general but malfunction of AEB could occur severe accident. Therefore, proper education is required to use AEB system, simply instead of focusing on developing and installing AEB to prevent traffic accidents. Traffic accident of AEB equipped vehicle may arise a new dispute between a driver's fault and vehicle defect. It is highly recommended to regulate an advanced event data recorder system.

Since automated driving system (ADS) has great potential to innovate various fields of automobile and mobility industries, major countries are establishing safety standards for autonomous vehicles to support technology development. However, in order to prevent technology development from being hampered by the safety standards for technologies still under development, safety guidelines are applied until the technologies are mature. For example, the safety 'guideline' for level 4 ADS was published in December 2020 by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of Korea, while the safety 'standards' for level 3 ADS was promulgated in December 2019. In this study, the domestic safety guideline for level 4 ADS is analyzed with the guidelines of major advanced countries in terms of safety elements. As it takes a lot of time before the safety standards of level 4 ADS is introduced, it is expected that the safety guideline will be updated several times. As necessary considerations when updating the safety guideline, industry acceptance, harmonization between safety elements, validation methods of system performance, and the user options are discussed.

The Korea's safety standards for vehicle have been strengthened to reduce casualties from traffic accidents since 1962. The standards have a rather complicated structure. The safety standards are composed of the main text and asterisks, and the safety standard implementation rules are composed of the main text, asterisks and appendices, and items of the same name are stipulated in other chapters within the safety standards. This study is to suggest improvement measures such as simplifying the structure of these safety standards and integrating safety standard items with the same name. Through this, users' understanding of the standards will be improved, and it is expected that the system will be more efficient such as securing safety quickly through harmonization with international standards following the development of rapidly changing new technologies such as automated vehicles.

As an alternative to solving safety, environments, and aging problems, ADS (Automated driving system) in the global automotive market is actively being developed as a new growth industry. In time for the appearance of ADS, relevant regulations and assessment programs must also be developed. For example, safety standards for the Level 3 automated driving system were promulgated in December 2019 by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of Korean government. However, assessment programs such as KNCAP for autonomous functions of ADS have not yet been introduced in Korea as well as globally. The autonomous driving functions of ADS at Level 3 or higher must be capable to recognize, judge and respond to objects and events in a wide variety of complex situations. In this paper, we examined and studied the complex situations, considerations and assessment items that ADS must respond to in the interest of safety for passengers, pedestrians and other road users. We hope this paper will be helpful to develop an execution program in the future.
