Aim & Scope

Communications for Statistical Applications and Methods (Commun. Stat. Appl. Methods, CSAM) is an official journal of the Korean Statistical Society and Korean International Statistical Society. It is an international and Open Access journal dedicated to publishing peer-reviewed, high quality and innovative statistical research. CSAM publishes articles on applied and methodological research in the areas of statistics and probability. It features rapid publication and broad coverage of statistical applications and methods. It welcomes papers on novel applications of statistical methodology in the areas including medicine (pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device), business, management, economics, ecology, education, computing, engineering, operational research, biology, sociology and earth science, but papers from other areas are also considered. The main criteria for publication are originality of work which makes a significant contribution to the area where the proposed statistical methods are applied. CSAM mainly accepts the applied and methodological papers, implying exclusion of papers with primarily theoretical or mathematical contents. Papers should include real or simulated data analysis, and the datasets used in the paper along with computer codes are strongly recommended to be included as supplementary material. The journal publishes articles written in English, and any researchers throughout the world can submit a manuscript if it fits the scope of the journal. The journal's publication types include original research articles, reviews, tutorials, reports on statistical software, case studies in the practice of statistics, discussions of interest to statistics teachers, editorials, book reviews, and correspondence. Other types are also negotiable with the editorial board. All articles are subject to peer review and processed through an online editorial system. Every attempt will be made to provide the first review of a submitted manuscript within one month of submission.

    In a general fractional factorial design, the n-levels of a factor are coded by the $n^{th}$ roots of the unity. Pistone and Rogantin (2007) gave a full generalization to mixed-level designs of the theory of the polynomial indicator function using this device. This article discusses the optimal blocking scheme for nonregular designs. According to hierarchical principle, the minimum aberration (MA) has been used as an important criterion for selecting blocked regular fractional factorial designs. MA criterion is mainly based on the defining contrast groups, which only exist for regular designs but not for nonregular designs. Recently, Cheng et al. (2004) adapted the generalized (G)-MA criterion discussed by Tang and Deng (1999) in studying $2^p$ optimal blocking scheme for nonregular factorial designs. The approach is based on the method of replacement by assigning $2^p$ blocks the distinct level combinations in the column with different blocks. However, when blocking level is not a power of two, we have no clue yet in any sense. As an example, suppose we experiment during 3 days for 12-run Plackett-Burman design. How can we arrange the 12-runs into the three blocks? To solve the problem, we apply G-MA criterion to nonregular mixed-level blocked scheme via the mixed-level indicator function and give an answer for the question.

    Coverage-based NHPP SRGMs have been introduced in order to incorporate the coverage growth behavior into the NHPP SRGMs. The coverage growth function representing the coverage growth behavior during testing is thus an essential factor of the coverage-based NHPP SRGMs. This paper proposes a class of discrete time coverage growth functions and illustrates its application to real data sets.

    Multinomial logistic regression is probably the most popular representative of probabilistic discriminative classifiers for multiclass classification problems. In this paper, a kernel variant of multinomial logistic regression is proposed by combining a Newton's method with a bound optimization approach. This formulation allows us to apply highly efficient approximation methods that effectively overcomes conceptual and numerical problems of standard multiclass kernel classifiers. We also provide the approximate cross validation (ACV) method for choosing the hyperparameters which affect the performance of the proposed approach. Experimental results are then presented to indicate the performance of the proposed procedure.

    We studied a modelling process for unimodal and multimodal circular data by using von Mises and its mixture distribution. In particular we suggested EM algorithm to find ML estimates of the mixture model. Simulation results showed the suggested methods are very accurate. Applications to two kinds of real data sets are also included.

    When multiple objectives exist, there are three approaches exist. These are maximin design, compound design, and constrained design. Still, each of three design criteria has its own strength and weakness. In this paper Hybrid approach is suggested when multiple design objectives exist, which is a combination of maximin and constrained design. Sometimes experimenter has several objectives, but he/she has only one or two primary objectives, others less important. A new approach should be useful under this condition. The genetic algorithm is used for few examples. It has been proven to be a very useful technique for this complex situation. Conclusion follows.

    Testing the sibling relationship becomes more important issue in many cases such as the reunion of dispersed family members whose parents have already passed away and the discrimination between pure-bred and crossbred dogs. Analysis of the sibling case is different from that of the paternity case. In this paper, we describe how to evaluate and determine the sibling relationship by comparing sibling pairs with unrelated pairs. We use the Korean population with 17 independent STR loci system to propose a discrimination rule.

    Kruskal and Wallis (1952) proposed typical nonparametric method in one-way layout problem. A special feature of this procedure is use of rank in mixed samples. In this paper, the new procedure based on placement as extension of the two sample placement tests described in Orban and Wolfe (1982) was proposed. Some critical values in small sample cases and comparative results of a Monte Carlo power study are presented.

    Five plotting positions are applied to the computation of probability weighted moments (PWM) on the parameters of the generalized logistic distribution. Over a range of parameter values with some finite sample sizes, the effects of five plotting positions are investigated via Monte Carlo simulation studies. Our simulation results indicate that the Landwehr plotting position frequently tends to document smaller biases than others in the location and scale parameter estimations. On the other hand, the Weibull plotting position often tends to cause larger biases than others. The plotting position (i - 0.35)/n seems to report smaller root mean square errors (RMSE) than other plotting positions in the negative shape parameter estimation under small samples. In comparison to the maximum likelihood (ML) method under the small sample, the PWM do not seem to be better than the ML estimators in the location and scale parameter estimations documenting larger RMSE. However, the PWM outperform the ML estimators in the shape parameter estimation when its magnitude is near zero. Sensitivity of right tail quantile estimation regarding five plotting positions is also examined, but superiority or inferiority of any plotting position is not observed.

    A continuum structure function (CSF) is a non-decreasing mapping from the unit hypercube to the unit interval. A B-type CSF, defined in the text, is a CSF whose behaviour is modeled by its underlying binary structures. As the measure of importance of a system component for a B-type CSF, the structural and reliability importance of a component at a system level ${\alpha}$(0 < ${\alpha}$ < 1) are defined and their properties are deduced.

    Given the moments of a symmetric random variable, its density and distribution functions can be accurately approximated by making use of the algorithm proposed in this paper. This algorithm is specially designed for approximating symmetric distributions and comprises of four phases. This approach is essentially based on the transformation of variable technique and moment-based density approximants expressed in terms of the product of an appropriate initial approximant and a polynomial adjustment. Probabilistic quantities such as percentage points and percentiles can also be accurately determined from approximation of the corresponding distribution functions. This algorithm is not only conceptually simple but also easy to implement. As illustrated by the first two numerical examples, the density functions so obtained are in good agreement with the exact values. Moreover, the proposed approximation algorithm can provide the more accurate quantities than direct approximation as shown in the last example.

    Under repeated surveys, missing values often appear for various reasons and are replaced by new samples. It is investigated that the existing estimator in repeated survey by Jessen (1942), which has been originally developed for the new samples of fixed size, can be used in such situation where the size of new samples is random. It is shown that the proposed estimator has smaller variance than the sample mean.

    Lee, et al. (1999) proposed a unique but universal robust objective function replacing the square objective function for the radial basis function network, and demonstrated some advantages. In this article, the robust objective function in Lee, et al. (1999) is adapted for a multilayer perceptron (MLP). The shape of the robust objective function is formed by the scale parameter. Another method of determining a proper value of that parameter is proposed.

    Diagnostic test results, which are approximately normal with a few number of outliers, but non-normal probability distribution, are frequently observed in practice. In the evaluation of two diagnostic tests, Greenhouse and Mantel (1950) proposed a parametric test under the assumption of normality but this test is inappropriate for the above non-normal case. In this paper, we propose a computationally simple nonparametric test that is based on quantile estimators of mean and standard deviation, instead of the moment-based mean and standard deviation as in some parametric tests. Parametric and nonparametric tests are compared with simulations under the assumption of, respectively, normality and non-normality, and under various combinations of the probability distributions for the normal and diseased groups.

    Some tests of the goodness of fit of the uniform distribution between 0 and 1 are presented. The powers of the tests under certain alternatives are examined. As a result, the statistic based on the difference between the order statistics and the modal value of them gives good powers. We also give modifications of the statistic without using the extensive tables of the critical points.

    We develop noninformative priors for the ratio of the lognormal means in equal variances case. The Jeffreys' prior and reference priors are derived. We find a first order matching prior and a second order matching prior. It turns out that Jeffreys' prior and all of the reference priors are first order matching priors and in particular, one-at-a-time reference prior is a second order matching prior. One-at-a-time reference prior meets very well the target coverage probabilities. We consider the bioequivalence problem. We calculate the posterior probabilities of the hypotheses and Bayes factors under Jeffreys' prior, reference prior and matching prior using a real-life example.

    We propose the new sampling method, called modified ranked ordering set sampling (MROSS). Kim and Kim (2003) suggested the sign test using the ranked ordering set sampling (ROSS), and showed that the asymptotic relative efficiency (ARE) of ROSS against RSS for sign test increases as sample size does. We propose the estimator for the population mean using MROSS. The relative precision (RP) of estimator of the population mean using MROSS method with respect to the usual estimator using modified RSS is higher, and when the underlying distribution is skewed, the bias of the proposed estimator is smaller than that of several ranked set sampling estimators.

    The improvement of quality is a continuous process and one of the main objectives of the Statistical Strategy launched by the Korea National Statistical Office (KNSO) is the enhancement of the quality of Korea national statistics. In this paper, we define the processing statistic, classify the Korea national processing statistics, and develop the quality indicators and check list for assessing the national processing statistics of Korea. During its development, the indicators has been discussed with the processing statistic managers of the KNSO and the checklist tested in a pilot study covering a variety of processing statistic areas.

    In this paper, we propose a method for estimating the mean of a population which has a linear trend, when both n, the sample size, and k, the reciprocal of the sampling fraction, are odd numbers. The proposed method, not having the drawbacks of centered systematic sampling, centered modified sampling and centered balanced sampling, consists of selecting a sample by balanced systematic sampling and estimating the population mean by using interpolation. We compare the efficiency of the proposed method and existing methods under the criterion of the expected mean square error based on the infinite superpopulation model.

    Moment expressions are derived for the internally truncated normal distributions commonly applied to screening and constrained problems. They are obtained from using a recursive relation between the moments of the normal distribution whose distribution is truncated in its internal part. Closed form formulae for the moments can be presented up to $N^{th}$ order under the internally truncated case. Necessary theories and two applications are provided.

    A normal mixture model with which dependence between classes is incorporated is proposed in order to detect differentially expressed genes. Gene clustering approaches suffer from the high dimensional column of microarray expression data matrix which leads to the over-fit problem. Various methods are proposed to solve the problem. In this paper, use of simple averaging data within each class is proposed to overcome the various problems due to high dimensionality when the normal mixture model is fitted. Some experiments through simulated data set and real data set show its availability in actuality.
