Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology (JEET), which is the official publication of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers (KIEE) being published bimonthly, released the first issue in March 2006.The journal is open to submission from scholars and experts in the areas of electrical engineering technologies. In recent academic and industrial circles of the Republic of Korea, the securement of available reactive power reserve against the line faults is at issue. Thus, simulations have been performed for the securing of effective reactive power reserve (effective Q) to prepare for the line faults and improve reactive power monitoring and control methods. That is, a research has been conducted for the fast-decoupled Newton-Raphson method. In this study, a method that distinguishes source and sink regions to carry out faster provision of information in the event of line fault has been proposed. This method can perform quantification with the formula that calculates voltage variations in the line flow. The line flow and voltage changes can be easily induced by the power flow calculation performed every second in the operation system. It is expected that the proposed method will be able to contribute to securement of power system stability by securing efficient reactive power. Also, the proposed method will be able to contribute to prepare against contingencies effectively. It is not easy to prepare quickly for the situation where voltage drops rapidly due to the exhaustion of reactive power source by observing voltage information only. This paper's simulation was performed on the large scale Korean power system in steady state.

This paper proposes an algorithm for the differential protection of an Indirect Symmetrical Phase Shift Transformer (ISPST) by considering the different behaviors of the compensated differential current under internal fault and magnetizing inrush conditions. In this algorithm, a criterion function is defined which is based on the difference of amplitude of the wavelet transformation over a specific frequency band. The function has been used for the discrimination between three phase magnetizing inrush and internal fault condition and requires less than a quarter cycle after disturbance. This method is independent of any coefficient or threshold values of wavelet transformation. The merit of this algorithm is demonstrated by the simulation of different faults in series and excitation unit and magnetizing inrush with varying switching conditions on ISPST using PSCAD/EMTDC. Due to unavailability of in-field large interconnected transformers for such a large number of destructive tests, the results are further verified by Real Time Digital Simulator (RSCAD/RTDS). The proposed algorithm has been compared with the conventional harmonic restraint based method that justifies the application of wavelet transform for differential protection of ISPST. The proposed algorithm has also been verified for different rating of ISPSTs and satisfactory results were obtained. -

This paper presents a hybrid stochastic deterministic multi-timescale scheduling (SDMS) approach for generation scheduling of a power grid. SDMS considers flexible resource options including conventional generation flexibility in a chance-constrained day-ahead scheduling optimization (DASO). The prime objective of the DASO is the minimization of the daily production cost in power systems with high penetration scenarios of variable generation. Furthermore, energy storage is scheduled in an hourly-ahead deterministic real-time scheduling optimization (RTSO). DASO simulation results are used as the base starting-point values in the hour-ahead online rolling RTSO with a 15-minute time interval. RTSO considers energy storage as another source of grid flexibility, to balance out the deviation between predicted and actual net load demand values. Numerical simulations, on the IEEE RTS test system with high wind penetration levels, indicate the effectiveness of the proposed SDMS framework for managing the grid flexibility to meet the net load demand, in both day-ahead and real-time timescales. Results also highlight the adequacy of the framework to adjust the scheduling, in real-time, to cope with large prediction errors of wind forecasting. -

Recent concerns about environmental conditions have triggered the growing interest in using green energy resources. These sources of energy, however, bring new challenges mainly due to their uncertainty and intermittency. In order to alleviate the concerns on the penetration of intermittent energy resources, this paper investigates impacts of realizing demand-side potentials. Among different demand-side management programs, this paper considers demand response wherein consumers change their consumption pattern in response to changing prices. The research studies demand response potentials from different load sectors on generation system well-being. Consumers' sensitivity to time-varying prices is captured via self and cross elasticity coefficients. In the calculation of well-being indices, sequential Monte Carlo simulation approach is accompanied with fuzzy logic. Finally, IEEE-RTS is used as the test bed to conduct several simulations and the associated results are thoroughly discussed. -

In designing System Protection Schemes (SPSs) in power systems, protecting transmission network against extreme undesired conditions becomes a significant challenge in mitigating the transmission line overloading. This paper presents an intelligent Special Protection and Control Scheme (SPCS) using of Differential Evolution with Adaptive Mutation (DEAM) approach to obtain the optimum generation rescheduling to solve the transmission line overloading problem in system contingency conditions. DEAM algorithm employs the attraction-repulsion idea that is applied in the electromagnetism-like algorithm to support the mutation process of the conventional Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm. Different N-1 contingency conditions under base and increase load demand are considered in this paper. Simulation results have been compared with those acquired from Genetic Algorithm (GA) application. Minimum severity index has been considered as the objective function. The final results show that the presented DEAM method offers better performance than GA in terms of faster convergence and less generation fuel cost. IEEE 30-bus test system has been used to prove the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithm. -
Since there are multiple random variables in the probabilistic load flow (PLF) calculation of distribution system containing distributed generation (DG) and electric vehicle charging load (EVCL), a Monte Carlo method based on composite sampling method is put forward according to the existing simple random sampling Monte Carlo simulation method (SRS-MCSM) to perform probabilistic assessment analysis of voltage quality of distribution system containing DG and EVCL. This method considers not only the randomness of wind speed and light intensity as well as the uncertainty of basic load and EVCL, but also other stochastic disturbances, such as the failure rate of the transmission line. According to the different characteristics of random factors, different sampling methods are applied. Simulation results on IEEE9 bus system and IEEE34 bus system demonstrates the validity, accuracy, rapidity and practicability of the proposed method. In contrast to the SRS-MCSM, the proposed method is of higher computational efficiency and better simulation accuracy. The variation of nodal voltages for distribution system before and after connecting DG and EVCL is compared and analyzed, especially the voltage fluctuation of the grid-connected point of DG and EVCL.

This paper analyses the characteristics of incomplete-journey double-circuit transmission lines on the same tower formed by single-circuit lines and double-circuit lines, and then presents a fault location algorithm based on identification of fault branch. With the relationship between the three-phase system and the double-circuit line system, a phase-mode transformation matrix for double-circuit lines can be derived. Based on the derived matrix, the double-circuit lines with faults can be decoupled, and then the fault location for an incomplete-journey double-circuit line is achieved by using modal components in the mode domain. The algorithm is divided into two steps. Firstly, the fault branch is identified by comparing the relationships of voltage amplitudes at the bonding point. Then the fault location, on the basis of the identification result, is calculated by using a two-terminal method, and only the fault distance of the actual fault branch can be obtained. There is no limit on synchronization of each terminal sampling data. The results of ATP-EMTP simulation show that the proposed algorithm can be applied within the entire line and can accurately locate faults in different fault types, fault resistances, and fault distances.

To achieve economic stability, distribution Company as an economic institution should be managed by various processes. In this way, knowledge of different processes is the first step. Furthermore, expectations, outputs, requirement data, and sub-processes should be extracted and determined. Accordingly, to assign the performance responsibility of each process, the decision-making points must be introduced and, the deviation or change in set-points should be investigated into processes. Also, the performance of processes could be monitored by introducing of the sub-indictors. In this study, a practical method is presented for monitoring of reliability and power loss indices from viewpoint components' supply chain into the distribution network. At first, the visibility model of the supply chain is illustrated by focus group and the sub-indicators are extracted for each process of this chain. Then, validation and verification of the sub-indicators are accomplished by the Delphi method and, an information dashboard is presented by confirmed the sub-indicators and statistics methods. Finally, the proposed method is investigated by real data in a typical network and the results are analyzed. -

This paper presents the design and dynamic analysis of a stand-alone microgrid with high penetration of renewable energy. The optimal sizing of various components in the microgrid is obtained considering two objectives: minimization of levelized cost of energy (LCOE) and maximization of renewable energy penetration. Integrating high renewable energy in stand-alone microgrid requires special considerations to assure stable dynamic performance, we therefore develop voltage and frequency control method by coordinating Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and diesel generators. This approach was applied to the design and development of Gasa Island microgrid in South Korea. The microgrid consists of photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, lithium-ion batteries and diesel generators. The dynamic performance of the microgrid during different load and weather variations is verified by simulation studies. Results from the real microgrid were then presented and discussed. Our approach to the design and control of microgrid will offer some lessons in future microgrid design. -

It is necessary to charge electric vehicles in order to drive them. Thus, it is essential to have electric vehicle charging facilities in place. In the case of a household battery charger, the power similar to that consumed by a household with a basic contract power of 3kW is consumed. In addition, many consumers who own an electric vehicle will charge their vehicles at the same time. The simultaneous charging of electric vehicles will cause the load to increase, which then will lead to the imbalance of supply and demand in the distribution system. Thus, a smart charging scheme for electric vehicles is an essential element. In this paper, simulated conditions were set up using real data relating to Korea in order to design a smart charging technique suitable for the actual situation. The simulated conditions were used to present a smart charging technique for electric vehicles that disperses electric vehicles being charged simultaneously. The EVs and Smart Charging Technique are modeled using the Electro Magnetic Transients Program (EMTP). -

This paper presents an approach of the Gustafson-Kessel (GK) clustering algorithm's performance in fault identification on power transmission lines. The clustering algorithm is incorporated in a scheme that uses hybrid intelligent technique to combine artificial neural network and a fuzzy inference system, known as adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). The scheme is used to identify the type of fault that occurs on a power transmission line, either single line to ground, double line, double line to ground or three phase. The scheme is also capable an analyzing the fault location without information on line parameters. The range of error estimation is within 0.10 to 0.85 relative to five values of fault resistances. This paper also presents the performance of the GK clustering algorithm compared to fuzzy clustering means (FCM), which is particularly implemented in structuring a data. Results show that the GK algorithm may be implemented in fault identification on power system transmission and performs better than FCM. -

Recently, DC systems are considered as efficient electric power systems for renewable energy based clean power generators. This discloses several critical issues that are required to be considered before the installation of the DC systems. First of all, voltage/current switching stress, which is aggravated by large fault current, might damage DC circuit breakers. This problem can be simply solved by applying a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) as proposed in this study. It allows a simple use of insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) as a DC circuit breaker. To evaluate the proposed resistive type SFCL application to the DC circuit breaker, a DC distribution system is composed of the practical line impedances from the real distribution system in Do-gok area, Korea. Also, to reflect the distributed generation (DG) effects, several DC-to-DC converters are applied. The locations and sizes of the DGs are optimally selected according to the results of previous studies on DG optimization. The performance of the resistive type SFCL applied DC circuit breaker is verified by a time-domain simulation based case study using the power systems computer aided design/electromagnetic transients including DC (PSCAD/ EMTDC(R)). -
This paper analyzes a symmetric active cell balancer for a battery management system. The considered cell balancer uses a forward converter in which the circuit structure is symmetric. This cell-balancing method uses fewer switches and is simpler than the previously proposed active cell-balancing circuits. Active power switches of this cell-balancing circuit operate simultaneously with the same pulse width modulation signals. Therefore, this cell-balancing circuit requires less time to be balanced than a previous bidirectional-forward-converter-based cell balancer. This paper analyzes the operational principles and modes of this cell balancer with computer-based circuit simulation results as well as experimental results in which each unbalanced cell is equalized with this cell balancer. The maximum power transfer efficiency of the investigated cell balancer was 87.5% from the experimental results. In addition to the experimental and analytical results, this paper presents the performance of this symmetric active cell-balancing method.

Medium voltage control applications due to obtain better output voltage and reduced electro-magnetic interference multi level inverter is used. In closed loop control with inverter, the PI controller does not operate satisfactorily when the operating point changes. This paper presents the performance of Co-Efficient diagram PI controller based indirect vector controlled induction motor drive fed from three-level inverter under different operating conditions (dynamic and steady state). The proposed Co-Efficient diagram PI controller based three level inverter significantly reduces the torque ripple compared to that of conventional PI controller. The performance of the indirect vector controlled induction motor drive has been simulated at different operating conditions. For three-level inverter control, a simplified space vector modulation technique is implemented, which reduces the coordinate transformations complications in the algorithms. The performance parameters, torque ripple contents and THD of induction motor drive with three-level inverter is compared under different operating conditions using CDM-PI and conventional PI controllers. -

An improved single-phase full-bridge zero-voltage-switching inverter using a subtractive coupled magnetics is proposed in this paper. The proposed topology overcomes several drawbacks of the conventional ARCPI zero-voltage-switching inverter including two bulky capacitors which can cause problems such as the need for a protection circuit and voltage fluctuation of split capacitors. Also the proposed topology can reduce the number of devices required for ZVS through a simplified auxiliary circuit, thus achieving low cost and small volume and is applicable a modified unipolar PWM scheme. Detail mode analysis and design considerations are provided for optimal efficiency. In the end, the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed topology are verified experimentally under various conditions. -

Reducing the noise and vibration of the BLDC motors is very essential for some special applications. In this paper, a new structural design is introduced to increase the natural frequencies of the stator in BLDC motors as increasing the natural frequencies can reduce the severe effects of the structural resonances, including high levels of noise and vibration. The design is based on placing a single hole on definite regions at the stator cross sectional area (each region contains one tooth and its upper parts in the stator yoke) in an optimum way by which the natural frequencies at different modes are shifted to the higher values. The optimum diameter and locations for the holes are extracted by the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and the modal analyses in the iterative process are done by Finite Element Method (FEM). Moreover, the motor performance by the optimum stator structure is analyzed by FEM and compared with the prototype motor. Preventing the stator magnetic saturation and the motor cogging torque enhancement are the two constraints of the optimization problem. The optimal structural design method is applied experimentally and the validity of the design method is confirmed by the simulated and experimental results. -

Interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) is most commonly used in the automotive industry as a traction motor for electric vehicle (EV). In electric vehicle, the torque output rapidly changes according to the operation of the accelerator and the braking of the driver. The transient torques are thus generated very frequently in accordance with the variable speed control of the driver. Therefore, in this paper, a method for improving the torque response in the transient states of IPMSM is proposed. In order to complement the disadvantages of the conventional PI current controller in the field oriented control (FOC), the finite-state model predictive current control and 2D-LUT is applied to improve the torque response at the torque transient period. Simulation and experiment results are given to verify the reliability of the proposed method. -

This paper presents a design of a 2-phase segmental stator type 4/3 switched reluctance motor (SRM) for air-blower application. The air-blower requires only one direction rotation, high rotor speed without torque dead-zone. In order to satisfy the requirements of the load, the rotor of the 4/3 proposed SRM is designed with wider rotor pole arc and non-uniform air-gap is applied on the rotor shape. With a special rotor structure, the motor generates a wider positive torque region and has no torque dead-zone. The stator of the proposed SRM is constructed with two segmental C-cores, and there are no magnetic connections between 2 C-cores. The flux follows in a short closed loop in each C-core and has no reversal flux in the stator. The static and dynamic characteristics of the proposed motor are analyzed by the finite element method (FEA) and Matlab-Simulink, respectively. In order to verify the design, a prototype of the proposed motor has manufactured for laboratory test. The performance of the proposed motor is verified by the simulation and experimental results. -

Medium voltage drive systems driven by high-power multi-level inverters operating at low switching frequency can reduce the switching losses of the power device and increase the output power. Employing subsection synchronous current harmonic minimum pulse width modulation (CHMPWM) technique can maintain the total harmonic distortion of current at a very low level. It can also reduce the losses of the system, improve the system control performance and increase the efficiency of DC-link voltage accordingly. This paper proposes a subsection synchronous CHMPWM approach of active neutral point clamped five-level (ANPC-5L) inverter under low switching frequency operation. The subsection synchronous scheme is obtained by theoretical calculation based on the allowed maximum switching frequency. The genetic algorithm (GA) is adopted to get the high-precision initial values. So the expected switching angles can be achieved with the help of sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithm. The selection principle of multiple sets of the switching angles is also presented. Finally, the validity of the theoretical analysis and the superiority of the CHMPWM are verified through both the simulation results and experimental results. -

Transformers are one of the most precious elements of the electric power system. Stability and reliability of the electric power network mainly depend on the working of the transformer. Leakage reactance of the transformer is one of the important factors and accurate calculation of the leakage reactance is necessary for the transformer designers and electric distributors. Leakage reactance of the transformer depends on the geometry of the transformer. There are many different methods for the calculations of the leakage reactance however mostly are usable when the axial heights of the high voltage and low voltage windings are equal. When the axial heights of high voltage and low voltage windings are asymmetric most of the analytical methods are not reliable. In this study, a new analytical method is introduced for the calculation of the leakage reactance. Fourteen different transformers are investigated in this study and four of them are presented in this paper. The results of the new analytical method are compared with the experimental results. Other analytical and numerical methods are also compared with this new method. Results show that this method is more reliable and accurate as compared to the other analytical methods. The maximum relative error between short-circuit test and proposed method for these fourteen transformers was less than 2.8%. -

In this paper, optimal control of the fuel cell and design of a high-efficiency power converter is implemented to build a high-priced fuel cell system with minimum capacity. Conventional power converter devices use a non-isolated boost converter for high efficiency while the battery is charged, and reduce its conduction loss by using MOSFETs instead of diodes. However, the efficiency of the boost converter decreases, since overshoot occurs because there is a moment when the body diode of the MOSFET is conducted during the dead time and huge loss occurs when the dead time for the maximum-power-flowing state is used in the low-power-flowing state. The method proposed in this paper is to adjust the dead time of boost and rectifier switches by predicting the power flow to meet the maximum efficiency in every load condition. After analyzing parasite components, the stability and efficiency of the high-efficiency boost converter is improved by predictive compensation of the delay component of each part, and it is proven by simulation and experience. The variation in switching delay times of each switch of the full-bridge converter is compensated by falling time compensation, a control method of PWM, and it is also proven by simulation and experience. -

This paper presents the evaluation of a three-phase three-level DC-DC converter which achieves the soft switching condition for all switches in the circuit and uses the phase-shift PWM strategy to adjust electric power at the output side. According to the analysis, the operation modes can be categorized into two cases: in the first case, where the phase shift angle is less than 120 degrees and in the second case, where the phase shift angle is more than 120 degrees. The outer switches of the circuit operate under ZVS condition and the inner switches operate under ZVZCS condition. It has been discovered that under ZCS condition of the inner switches, when the blocking capacitors decrease, they make the voltage across the blocking capacitor higher so the current reduce rapidly. A three-phase three-level DC-DC converter has a maximum efficiency of 93.5% when its load is of 5.7 kW. The results from the experiment have been compared to the results obtained by the$MATLAB^{(R)}$ simulator in order to confirm the validity of the proposed converter. -
Fossil oil, as the main energy of transportation, is destined to be exhausted. The electrification of transportation is a sustainable solution to the energy crisis, since electric power could be acquired from the inexhaustible sun, wind and water. Among all the problems that hinder the development of Electric Vehicle (EV) industry, charging issue might be the most prominent one. In this paper, the service process of a charging station with Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is analyzed by means of
$Cram{\acute{e}}r$ - Lundberg model which has been intensively utilized in ruin theory. The service quality is proposed in two dimensions: the service efficiency and the service reliability. The arrival rate and State of Charge (SOC) upon arrival are derived from 2009 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS). The simulations are performed to show how the service quality is determined by the system parameters such as the number of servers, the service rate, the initial capacity, the charge rate and the maximum waiting time. At last, the economic analysis of the system is conducted and the best combination of the system parameters are given. -
The brushless DC motor's commutation torque ripple is caused by inconsistency in the rate of phase current change. Thus, a method that considers armature resistance is proposed to modulate phase current. The three-phase control strategy, which involves the "open-phase conduction, off-phase pulse width modulation, and maintained non-commutation phase" technique, is applied during commutation at full-speed segments of the motor. Changes in each phase current are analyzed theoretically by establishing mathematical model based on phase current to determine the relative difference among shutdown phase, duty, and motor operating parameters. The turn-on and turn-off phase current change rates are made to be consistent to ensure less non-commutation phase current ripple, then the torque ripple is inhibited. The simulation results show that the phase commutation current and torque ripple coefficient of the proposed method are reduced from 56.9% and 55.5% to 6.8% and 6.1%, respectively. In the experiment system, the pulsation coefficient of the motor phase current is reduced from 40.0% to 16.7% at low speed and 50.0% to 18.8% at high speed. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed control method significantly inhibits commutation current and torque in the full section.

As a key component of high-voltage power conversion system for electric vehicles (EVs), bidirectional DC/DC (Bi-DC/DC) is required to have high efficiency and light weight. Conventional design methods optimize the Bi-DC/DC at the maximum power dissipation point (MPDP). For EVs application, the work condition of the Bi-DC/DC is not strict as the MPDP, where the design method using MPDP may not be optimal during travel of EVs. This paper optimizes the Bi-DC/DC converter targeting efficiency and weight based on the driving cycle. By analyzing the two-phase interleaved Bi-DC/DC for hybrid energy storage systems (HESS) of EVs, its power dissipation is calculated, and an efficiency model is derived. On this basis, weight models of capacitor, inductor and heat sink are built, as well as a dynamic temperature model of heat sink. Based on these models, a method using New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) for optimal design of Bi-DC/DC which simultaneously considered efficiency and weight is proposed. The simulation result shows that compare with conventional optimization methods revealed that the optimization approach based on driving cycle allowed significant weight reduction while meeting the efficiency requirements.

In recent years, several LCL filter design methods for different converter topologies have been published, many of which use analytical expressions to calculate the ideal converter AC voltage harmonic spectrum. This paper presents the LCL filter design methodology but the focus is on presentation and validation of the non-iterative filter design method for a grid-connected three-phase two-level PWM-VSC. The developed method can be adapted for different converter topologies and PWM algorithms. Furthermore, as a starting point for the design procedure, only the range of PWM carrier frequencies is required instead of an exact value. System nonlinearities, usually omitted from analysis have a significant influence on VSC AC voltage harmonic spectrum. In order to achieve better accuracy of the proposed procedure, the system nonlinear model is incorporated into the method. Optimal filter parameters are determined using the novel cost function based on higher frequency losses of the filter. An example of LCL filter design for a 40 kVA grid-connected PWM-VSC has been presented. Obtained results have been used to construct the corresponding laboratory setup and measurements have been performed to verify the proposed method. -
Induction motors are a workhorse for the industry. The condition monitoring and fault analysis are the main concern for the engineers. The bearing is one of the vital segment of the induction machine and the condition of the whole machine is decided based on the condition of the bearing. In the present paper, the vibration signal of the bearing has been used for the analysis. The first line of action is to perform a statistical analysis of the vibration signal which gives trends in signal. To get the location of a fault in the bearing the second action is to develop an index based on Wavelet Packet Transform node energy named as Bearing Damage Index (BDI). Further, Teager-Kaiser Energy Operator (TKEO) has been calculated from higher index value to get the envelope and finally Power Spectral Density (PSD) has been applied to identify the fault frequencies. A performance index has also been developed to compare the usefulness of the proposed method with other existing methods. The result shows that the strong amplitude of fault characteristics and its side bands help to decide the type of fault present in the recorded signal obtained from the bearing.

In order to overcome the manufacturing difficulty of the transverse-flux permanent magnet linear motor (TFPMLM) and enhance its performance much better, a novel TFPMLM with E-core and 3 dimension (3D) magnetic structures is proposed in this paper. Firstly, its basic structure and operating principle are presented. Then the equivalent 2D configuration of the TFPMLM is transformed, so that the Schwarz-Christoffel (SC) mapping method can be used to analyze the motor. Furthermore, the air gap flux density distribution is solved by SC mapping method, based on which, the EMF waveform, no-load cogging force waveform and load force waveform are obtained. Finally, the prototyped TLPMLM is manufactured and the results are obtained from the experiment and 3D FEM, respectively, which are used to compare with those from SC mapping method.

Ultra Lift Luo Converter (ULC) gained considerable research interest in recent years. The stability analysis of voltage mode and peak current mode controlled ULC in continuous conduction mode is analyzed in this paper. The Eigen value theory is used for the stability analysis of voltage mode controlled ULC. Then to characterize the dynamics of inner current loop, the expressions of closed loop transfer function and loop gain are determined. An algorithm has been developed to analyze the stability of the peak current mode controlled ULC. The theoretical results are correlated with the simulation results obtained using PSIM 9.1(SMARTCTRL 1.0) software. Finally it is proposed to fabricate a prototype and validate the performance by suitable experimental setup.

A study on the multi-objective optimization of Interior Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motors (IPMSMs) with 2, 3, 4 and 5 flux barriers per magnetic pole, based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) is presented by considering the aspect of irreversible demagnetization. Applying the 2004 Toyota Prius single-layer IPMSM as the reference machine, the asymmetrical two-, three-, four- and five-layer rotor models with the same amount of Permanent-Magnets (PMs) is presented to improve the torque characteristics, i.e., reducing the torque pulsation and increasing the average torque. A reduction of the torque pulsations is achieved by adopting different and asymmetrical flux barrier geometries in each magnetic pole of the rotor topology. The demagnetization performance in the PMs is considered as well as the motor performance; and analyzed by using finite element method (FEM) for verification of the optimal solutions. -

This paper presents a compensative microstepping based position control with passive nonlinear adaptive observer for permanent magnet stepper motor. Due to the resistance uncertainties, a position error exists in the steady-state, and a ripple of position error appears during operation. The compensative microstepping is proposed to remedy this problem. The nonlinear controller guarantees the desired currents. The passive nonlinear adaptive observer is designed to estimate the phase resistances and the velocity. The closed-loop stability is proven using input to state stability. Simulation results show that the position error in the steady-state is removed by the proposed method if the persistent excitation conditions are satisfied. Furthermore, the position ripple is reduced, and the Lissajou curve of the phase currents is a circle. -
This paper explains the effects of the weak signal of a rotating-type electric field mill sensor fabricated for measuring the intensity of the electric field generated by high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission lines. The fabricated field mill consists of two isolated electrode vanes, a motor driver, and a ground part. The sensor plate is exposed to and shielded from the electric field by means of a rotary shutter consisting of a motor-driven mechanically complementary rotor/stator pair. When the uncharged sensor plate is exposed to an electric field, it becomes charged. The rotating electrode consists of several conductive vanes and is connected to the ground part, so that it is shielded. Determining the appropriate design variables such as the speed of the vane, its shape, and the distance between the two electrodes, is essential for ensuring optimal performance. By varying the speed, the weak signal characteristics which is used to signal processing and calibration experiment are quite different. Each weak signal pattern was analyzed along with the output voltage characteristics, in order to be able to determine the intensity of the electric field generated by HVDC power transmission lines with accuracy.

In order to give hydrophobic surface properties on carbon steel, the fluorinated amorphous carbon films were prepared by using linear 2.45GHz microwave PECVD device. Two different process approaches have been tested. One is direct deposition of a-C:H:F films using admixture of$Ar/CH_4/CF_4$ working gases and the other is surface treatment using$CF_4$ plasma after deposition of a-C:H film with$Ar/CH_4$ binary gas system.$Ar/CF_4$ plasma treated surface with high$CF_4$ gas ratio shows best hydrophobicity and durability of hydrophobicity. Nanometer scale surface roughness seems one of the most important factors for hydrophobicity within our experimental conditions. The properties of a-C:H:F films and$CF_4$ plasma treated a-C:H films were investigated in terms of surface roughness, hardness, microstructure, chemical bonding, atomic bonding structure between carbon and fluorine, adhesion and water contact angle by using atomic force microscopy (AFM), nano-indentation, Raman analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). -
A compact current model applicable to both single-gate (SG) and double-gate (DG) tunneling field-effect transistors (TFETs) is presented. The model is based on Kane's band-to-band tunneling (BTBT) model. In this model, the well-known and previously-reported quasi-2-D solution of Poisson's equation is used for the surface potential and length of the tunneling path in the tunneling region. An analytical tunneling current expression is derived from expressions of derivatives of local electric field and surface potential with respect to tunneling direction. The previously reported correction factor with three fitting parameters, compensating for superlinear onset and saturation current with drain voltage, is used. Simulation results of the proposed TFET model are compared with those from a technology computer-aided-design (TCAD) simulator, and good agreement in all operational bias is demonstrated. The proposed SG/DG-TFET model is developed with Verilog-A for circuit simulation. A TFET inverter is simulated with the Verilog-A SG/DG-TFET model in the circuit simulator; the model exhibits typical inverter characteristics, thereby confirming its effectiveness.

In this paper, the unipolar corona-needle charger was developed and its capabilities were both numerically and experimentally investigated. The experimental corona discharges and particle losses in the charger were obtained at different corona voltage, aerosol flow rate and particle diameter for positive and negative coronas. Inside the charger, the electric field and charge distribution and the transport behavior of the charged particle were predicted by a numerical simulation. The experimental results yielded the highest ion number concentrations of about$1.087{\times}10^{15}ions/m^3$ for a positive corona voltage of about 3.2 kV, and$1.247{\times}10^{16}ions/m^3$ for a negative corona voltage of about 2.9 kV, and the highest$N_it$ product for positive and negative coronas was found to about$7.53{\times}10^{13}$ and$8.65{\times}10^{14}ions/m^3$ s was occurred at the positive and negative corona voltages of about 3.2 and 2.9 kV, respectively, and the flow rate of 0.3 L/min. The highest diffusion loss was found to occur at particles with diameter of 30 nm to be about 62.50 and 19.33 % for the aerosol flow rate of 0.3 and 1.5 L/min, respectively, and the highest electrostatic loss was found to occur at particles with diameters of 75 and 50 nm to be about 86.29 and 72.92 % for positive and negative corona voltages of about 2.9 and 2.5 kV, respectively. The numerical results for the electric field distribution and the charged particles migration inside the charger were used to guide the description of the electric field and the behavior of charged particle trajectories to improve the design and refinement of a unipolar corona-needle charger that otherwise could not be seen from the experimental data. -
In this paper, a novel traffic flow control method based-on ramp metering and speed regulation using an adaptive sliding mode control (ASMC) method along with a deadzoned parameter adaptation law is proposed at a stochastic macroscopic level traffic environment, where the influence of the density and speed disturbances is accounted for in the traffic dynamic equations. The goal of this paper is to design a local traffic flow controller using both ramp metering and speed regulation based on ASMC, in order to achieve the desired density and speed for the maintenance of the maximum mainline throughput against disturbances in practice. The proposed method is advantageous in that it can improve the traffic flow performance compared to the traditional methods using only ramp metering, even in the presence of ramp storage limitation and disturbances. Moreover, a prior knowledge of disturbance magnitude is not required in the process of designing the controller unlike the conventional sliding mode controller. A stability analysis is presented to show that the traffic system under the proposed traffic flow control method is guaranteed to be uniformly bounded and its ultimate bound can be adjusted to be sufficiently small in terms of deadzone. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated under different traffic situations (i.e., different initial traffic status), in the sense that the proposed control method is capable of stabilizing traffic flow better than the previously well-known Asservissement Lineaire d'Entree Autoroutiere (ALINEA) strategy and also feedback linearization control (FLC) method.

This paper presents two MPC (Model Predictive Control) based charging and discharging algorithms of BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) for capacity firming of wind generation. To deal with the intermittency of the output of wind generation, a single BESS is employed. The proposed algorithms not only make the output of combined systems of wind generation and BESS track the predefined reference, but also keep the SoC (State of Charge) of BESS within its physical limitation. Since the proposed algorithms are both presented in simple if-then statements which are the optimal solutions of related optimization problems, they are both easy to implement in a real-time system. Finally, simulations of the two strategies are done using a realistic wind farm library and a BESS model. The results on both simulations show that the proposed algorithms effectively achieve capacity firming while fulfilling all physical constraints. -

This paper deals with reconfigurable secured mobile systems where the reconfigurability has the potential of providing a required adaptability to change the system requirements. The reconfiguration scenario is presented as a run-time automatic operation which allows security mechanisms and the addition-removal-update of software tasks. In particular, there is a definite requirement for filtering and intrusion detection mechanisms that will use fewer resources and also that will improve the security on the secured mobile devices. Filtering methods are used to control incoming traffic and messages, whereas, detection methods are used to detect malware events. Nevertheless, when different reconfiguration scenarios are applied at run-time, new security threats will be emerged against those systems which need to support multiple security objectives: Confidentiality, integrity and availability. We propose in this paper a new approach that efficiently detects threats after reconfigurable scenarios and which is based on filtering and intrusion detection methods. The paper's contribution is applied to Android where the evaluation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed middleware in order to detect the malicious events on reconfigurable secured mobile systems and the feasibility of running and executing such a system with the proposed solutions. -
In this paper, a new face tracking algorithm is proposed. The CamShift (Continuously adaptive mean SHIFT) algorithm shows unstable tracking when there exist objects with similar color to that of face in the background. This drawback of the CamShift is resolved by the proposed algorithm using Kinect's pixel-by-pixel depth information and the skin detection method to extract candidate skin regions in HSV color space. Additionally, even when the target face is disappeared, or occluded, the proposed algorithm makes it robust to this occlusion by the feature point matching. Through experimental results, it is shown that the proposed algorithm is superior in tracking performance to that of existing TLD (Tracking-Learning-Detection) algorithm, and offers faster processing speed. Also, it overcomes all the existing shortfalls of CamShift with almost comparable processing time.

As the number of tall buildings is increasing, the high-speed lift is necessary in the modern world. Therefore, the further considerations for associated safety devices of lifts were required by the International Standards. In order to stop the moving of cage and keep it, the lifts have to be provided with means that can detect the unintended car movement. Therefore, the International Standard Safety Rules for the construction and installation of lifts had been revised. This paper describes the operation principles of the Rope Brake to fit the Unintended Car Movement Protection (UCMP) means required by the International Standards. This paper confirmed that the performance of these devices was suitable in the scope of the safety standards. This paper also analyzed that the shocks on working of these devices in a car would be dangerous to each passenger differently. Thus, this paper proposes a new design that the circuit diagram of the Unintended Car Movement Protection systems should be improved from the existing design to solve these internal shock problems. So, it is expected to protect passengers from the internal shocks by working of Rope Brake due to irrelevant factors.
