ON THE GAUSS MAP COMING FROM A FRAMING OF THE TANGENT BUNDLE OF A COMPACT MANIFOLD

  • Let W be a parallelizable compact oriented manifold of dimension $n$ with boundary ${\partial}W=M$. We define the so-called Gauss map $f:M{\rightarrow}S^{n-1}$ using a framing of TW and show that the degree of $f$ is equal to Euler-Poincar$\acute{e}$ number ${\chi}(W)$, regardless of the specific framing. As a special case, we get a Hopf theorem.

  • On a compact n-dimensional manifold M, it has been conjectured that a critical point metric of the total scalar curvature, restricted to the space of metrics with constant scalar curvature of volume 1, should be Einstein. The purpose of the present paper is to prove that a 3-dimensional manifold (M,g) is isometric to a standard sphere if ker $s^*_g{{\neq}}0$ and there is a lower Ricci curvature bound. We also study the structure of a compact oriented stable minimal surface in M.

Smooth structures on symplectic 4-manifolds with finite fundamental groups

  • In studying smooth 4-manifolds the Donaldson invariant has played a central role. In [D1] Donaldson showed that non-vanishing Donaldson invariant of a smooth closed oriented 4-manifold X gives rise to the indecomposability of X. For instance, the complex algebraic suface X cannot decompose to a connected sum $X_1 #X_2$ with both $b_2^+(X_i) > 0$.

  • We examine the moduli space of oriented locally homogeneous manifolds of Type ${\mathcal{A}}$ which have non-degenerate symmetric Ricci tensor both in the setting of manifolds with torsion and also in the torsion free setting where the dimension is at least 3. These exhibit phenomena that is very different than in the case of surfaces. In dimension 3, we determine all the possible symmetry groups in the torsion free setting.

  • Let N be a complete Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature and let M be a complete noncompact oriented stable minimal hypersurface in N. We prove that if M has at least two ends and ${\int}_M{\mid}A{\mid}^2\;dv={\infty}$, then M admits a nonconstant harmonic function with finite Dirichlet integral, where A is the second fundamental form of M. We also show that the space of $L^2$ harmonic 1-forms on such a stable minimal hypersurface is not trivial. Our result is a generalization of one of main results in [12] because if N has nonnegative sectional curvature, then M admits no nonconstant harmonic functions with finite Dirichlet integral. And our result recovers a main theorem in [3] as a corollary.

  • A control-oriented nonlinear dynamic engine model is developed to represent a spark ignited engine over a wide range of operating conditions. The model includes intake manifold dynamics,. fuel film dynamics, and engine rotational dynamics with transport delays inherent in the four stroke engine cycles. The model is mathematically compact enough to run in real time, and can be used as an embedded model within a control algorithm or an observer. The model is validated with engine-dynamometer experimental data, and can be used in design and development of a powertrain controller.
