  • Recent observations reveal that the Tsushima Current has a double-cored structure downstream of the Tsushima Island. To explain this, a simple analytical model is proposed based on the assumption of small lateral eddy viscosity. This model suggests that an otherwise uniform current becomes to have a stream core immediately after it enters a channel due to the action of lateral friction. The core is initially broad but becomes sharper downstream. The speed at which the core develops depends on the intensity of lateral eddy viscosity. Likewise, a single-cored stream changes rapidly to a double-cored stream when it passes through an island located in the center of the channel. When the stream leaves the island behind, the reverse process from the double-to single-cored structures takes place. In this case, however, the double-cored structure is retained for a significant distance from the island. Overall, this model suggests that the double-cored structure of the Tsushima Current observed downstream of the Tsushima Island Is created by the lateral friction exerted by the Tsushima Island.

  • This paper suggests a high performance lateral super barrier rectifier (Lateral SBR) device which has the advantages of both Schottky diode and pn junction, that is, low forward voltage and low leakage current, respectively. Advantage of the proposed lateral SBR is that it can be easily implemented and integrated in current BCD platform. As a result of simulation using TCAD, BVdss = 48 V, $V_F=0.38V$ @ $I_F=35mA$, T_j = $150^{\circ}C$ were obtained with very low leakage current characteristic of 3.25 uA.

  • Background: Foodborne disease outbreaks from various food sources are a major health concern worldwide. Current methods for detection of foodborne pathogens are both expensive and time-consuming. Purpose: This review aims to present the current information available on the use of lateral flow test strips to detect pathogens in food products to enhance food safety. Results: Frequent foodborne disease outbreaks from various food sources have increased the need for rapid and easy methods for routine analysis of foodborne pathogens. Present detection methods for foodborne pathogens require expensive instruments, experts, and long time for sample analysis. Lateral flow test strips have drawn attention in recent years because of their ability to detect analytes quickly and easily. This review focuses on the principle of the lateral flow test, the various formats of lateral flow test strips, recognition elements, labeling tags, and reading instruments. In addition, this review also discusses the future prospects for the lateral flow test strips.

  • Hydraulic forces on a vessel are changed according to the depth/draft ratio (h/d) during berthing or towing in a lateral direction. It is well known that lateral current force coefficient is dependent on the kinds of vessel in question. However, not much research exists about the characteristics of general ships, except for oil tankers, as suggested by the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF). In this paper, lateral current coefficient related to h/d is analyzed in comparison with theoretical values and experiments with a 93m passenger ship. The estimated total resistance on the ship was 14.0 tons under an h/d of 1.6 with a lateral current force coefficient of 1.9. This was found to be similar to the measured value of 13.8 tons on the towing line in actual experiments. Resistances on the ship under an h/d of 3.0 was calculated to be 19.9 tons with a lateral current force coefficient of 1.3. Therefore, the lateral current force coefficient was expected to be 1.3 under an h/d of 3.0, in experiments measured value 20.0 tons. And the discharging currents did not affect the towing force if the towing line was over 30 m, since the towing resistance showed a similar tendency for changes in line length from 30 m to 60 m.

  • Performance-Based Plastic Design (PBPD) method has been recently developed to evaluate the behavior of structures in different performance levels. The PBPD method utilizes a base shear force and a lateral load pattern that are estimated based on energy and yielding mechanism concepts. Using of current lateral force pattern results in weak structural members in upper stories of a structure so that the values of the story drift in these stories are larger than the target drift, particularly in high-rise buildings. Therefore, such distribution requires modifications to overcome this drawback. This paper proposes a modified lateral load pattern for steel Eccentrically Braced Frames (EBFs) based on parametric study. In order to achieve the modified load pattern, a group of 26 EBFs has been analyzed under a set of 20 earthquake ground motions. Additionally, results of nonlinear dynamic analyses of EBFs have been post-processed by nonlinear regression analysis in order to derive the new load pattern. To prove the efficiency of present study, three EBFs as examples were designed by modified pattern and current PBPD distribution. Inelastic dynamic analyses results showed that the story drifts using modified lateral load pattern were well within the target values in comparison with current pattern in PBPD, particularly where the effect of the height is significant. The modified load pattern reduces the possibility of underdesigning in upper levels and overdesigning in lower levels of the frames.

  • Spin injection and detection in lateral spin valves with double nonmagnetic bottom electrodes are investigated theoretically. Spin-polarized current injected from a magnetic electrode is split to two bottom electrodes, and nonlocal spin signals between the other magnetic electrode and the nonmagnetic electrodes are calculated from drift-diffusion equations. It is shown that the spin signal is approximately proportional to the associated current in the electrode.

  • In this paper, we present the analytical models for substrate current and gate current of stressed SC-PMOSFET using the change of the lateral electric field distribution due to the trapped electron. Calculated Isub and Ig of stressed SC-PMOSFET agree with experimental data. Our model can be very useful explaining the logarithmic time dependence of Isub and Ig. and also the trapped electron distribution.

  • In current practice of earthquake resistant design the equivalent lateral force procedure is widely used for its simplicity and convenience. But the equivalent lateral force procedure is derived based on the assumption that the dynamic behavior of the structure is governed primarily by the fundamental vibration mode. Therefore proper prediction of dynamic responses of the structure is unreliable using the equivalent lateral force procedure when the effect of higher vibration modes on the dynamic behavior is negligible. In this study design seismic load which can reflect the effect of higher vibration modes is proposed from the point of view of proper assessment of story shears which have the major influence on the design moment of beams and columns. To evaluate the effect of higher modes, differences between the story force based on the equivalent lateral force procedure specified in current earthquake resistance building code and the one based on modal analysis using design spectrum are examined. From these results improved design seismic load for the equivalent lateral force procedure which can reflect the effect of higher vibration modes is proposed.

  • A newly proposed lateral dual-gate thyristor was fabricated and measured, which has excellent current saturation characteristics of $1200A/cm^2$ even at an anode-gate voltage of 29V, through the elimination of the structurally existing parasitic thyristor. And through the comparison with the LIGBT, the excellent current saturation characteristics of a newly proposed device was verified.

  • This paper presents a compensator for reduction of the reactive lateral current in multiple autonomously controlled uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) connected in parallel. This compensator acts directly on the control equation for voltage amplitude and it provides an improved current distribution especially in the case of parallel connection of UPSs with different output power ratings. Observations show that the original control equation for output voltage amplitude is efficient for voltage regulation but it causes great variation of voltage levels. A compensator with the same structure is added to counterbalance the variation caused by the original control equation. Simulations show promising results with the employment of the proposed compensator. Our simulations are confirmed by experimental results using three UPSs with different output ratings and voltage limiters ($1\%$) connected in parallel under various conditions.
