  • An accurate gain-of-two amplifier, which successfully reduces the capacitor mismatch error is proposed. This amplifier has similar circuit complexity and linearity improvement to the capacitor error-averaging technique, but operates with two clock phases just like the conventional pipeline stage. This makes it suitable for high-speed, high-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). Two ADC architectures employing the proposed accurate gain-of-two amplifier are also presented. The simulation results show that the proposed ADCs can achieve 15-bit linearity with 8-bit capacitor matching.

  • In this paper, a single-bit 3rd-order feedforward delta sigma modulator is proposed for audio applications. The proposed modulator is based on a class-C inverter for low voltage and power applications. For the high-precision requirement, the class-C inverter with regulated cascode structure increases its DC gain and acts as a low-voltage subthreshold amplifier. The proposed Class-C inverter-based modulator is designed and simulated in 180-nm CMOS process. With no performance loss and a low supply voltage compatibility, the proposed class-C inverter-based switched-capacitor modulator achieves high power efficiency. This design achieves an signal-to-noise-and-distortion ratio (SNDR) of 93.9 dB, an signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 108 dB, an spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of 102 dB, and a dynamic range (DR) of 102 dB at a signal bandwidth of 20 kHz and a sampling frequency of 4 MHz, while only using 280 μW of power consumption from a 0.8-V power supply.

  • In this paper, a single-bit 2nd-order delta-sigma modulator with the architecture of cascaded-of-integrator feedforward (CIFF) is proposed for precision measurement of current flowing through a secondary cell battery in a battery management system (BMS). The proposed modulator implements two switched capacitor integrators and a single-bit comparator with peripheral circuits such as a non-overlapping clock generator and a bias circuit. The proposed structure is designed to be applied to low-side current sensing method with low common mode input voltage. Using the low-side current measurement method has the advantage of reducing the burden on the circuit design. In addition, the ±30mV input voltage is resolved by the ADC with 15-bit resolution, eliminating the need for an additional programmable gain amplifier (PGA). The proposed a single-bit 2nd-order delta-sigma modulator has been implemented in a 350-nm CMOS process. It achieves 95.46-dB signal-to-noise-and-distortion ratio (SNDR), 96.01-dB spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR), and 15.56-bit effective-number-of-bits (ENOB) with an oversampling ratio (OSR) of 400 for 5-kHz bandwidth. The area and power consumption of the delta-sigma modulator are 670×490 ㎛2 and 414 ㎼, respectively.

  • This work describes a 3 V 12b 100 MS/s CMOS digital-to-analog converter (DAC) for high-speed communication system applications. The proposed DAC is composed of a unit current-cell matrix for 8 MSBs and a binary-weighted array for 4 LSBs, trading-off linearity, power consumption, chip area, and glitch energy with this process. The low-glitch switch driving circuits are employed to improve linearity and dynamic performance. Current sources of the DAC are laid out separately from the current-cell switch matrix core block to reduce transient noise coupling. The prototype DAC is implemented in a 0.35 um n-well single-poly quad-metal CMOS technology and the measured DNL and INL are within ${\pm}0.75$ LSB and ${\pm}1.73$ LSB at 12b, respectively. The spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) is 64 dB at 100 MS/s with a 10 MHz input sinewave. The DAC dissipates 91 mW at 3 V and occupies the active die area of $2.2{\;}mm{\;}{\times}{\;}2.0{\;}mm$

  • This paper provides the design techniques of a successive approximation register (SAR) type 12b analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for distributed maximum power point tracking (DMPPT) control in a photovoltaic system. Both a top-plate sampling technique and a $V_{CM}$-based switching technique are applied to the 12b capacitor digital-to-analog converter (CDAC). With these techniques, we can implement a 12b SAR ADC with a 10b capacitor array digital-to-analog converter (DAC). To enhance the accuracy of the ADC, a single-to-differential converted DAC is exploited with the dual sampling technique during top-plate sampling. Simulation results show that the proposed ADC can achieve a signal-to-noise plus distortion ratio (SNDR) of 70.8dB, a spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) of 83.3dB and an effective number of bits (ENOB) of 11.5b with bipolar CMOS LDMOD (BCDMOS) $0.35{\mu}m$ technology. Total power consumption is 115uW under a supply voltage of 3.3V at a sampling frequency of 1.25MHz. And the figure of merit (FoM) is 32.68fJ/conversion-step.

  • A 10-bit 10MS/s low power consumption successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) using a straightforward capacitive digital-to-analog converter (DAC) is presented in this paper. In the proposed capacitive DAC, switching is always straightforward, and its value is half of the peak-to-peak voltage in each step. Also the most significant bit (MSB) is decided without any switching power consumption. The application of the straightforward switching causes lower power consumption in the structure. The input is sampled at the bottom plate of the capacitor digital-to-analog converter (CDAC) as it provides better linearity and a higher effective number of bits. The comparator applies adaptive power control, which reduces the overall power consumption. The differential prototype SAR ADC was implemented with $0.18{\mu}m$ complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology and achieves an effective number of bits (ENOB) of 9.49 at a sampling frequency of 10MS/s. The structure consumes 0.522mW from a 1.8V supply. Signal to noise-plus-distortion ratio (SNDR) and spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) are 59.5 dB and 67.1 dB and the figure of merit (FOM) is 95 fJ/conversion-step.
