  • Consider a linear fourth-order system with no zero that is represented in terms of four specific parameters: two damping ratios and two natural frequencies. We investigate several interesting questions about the maximum overshoot of the system with respect to the four-tuple parameters. Some remarkable results are presented.

  • The power overshoot is rises in the output during the transient period when the output of nuclear reactor is increased from the initial state to the desired target state and certain amount of constraint on power level is of primary importance for safety control of nuclear reactor. Therefore, the maximum principle is applied to this process control in transfering its power from the initial state(no, co) to the final target state(2no, 2co or 1.5no, 1.5co), adjusting the reactivity so that its overshoot is limited within the allowable constraint required. In this case, the switching points, switching times, optimal lima and optimal control reactivity are calculated.

  • This study was conducted to optimize the spring constant and the damping coefficient, which are design parameters of the tractor cabin suspension system, to minimize the ride vibration. A 3D tractor MBD (multi-body dynamics) model with a cabin suspension system was developed using a dynamic analysis program (Recurdyn). Using the developed model and optimization algorithm, the spring constant and the damping coefficient, which are the design parameters of the cabin suspension for the tractor, was were optimized so thatto minimize the maximum overshoot for the vertical displacement of the cabin was minimized. The percent maximum overshoot of the tractor cabin was simulated for the 13 initial models, which were obtained using the ISCD-II method, and for the 3 additional SAO models presented in the optimization algorithm software. The model that represents with the smallest percent maximum overshoot among the 16 models was selected as the optimized model. The percent maximum overshoot of the optimized model was about approximately 5% lower than that of the existing model.

  • This paper presents an algorithm of automatically finding magnitude of each maintenance index regarding step response characteristic for speed control system of driving roller in rolling process. For speed response data with noise, we distinguished possible cases that the number of maximum values is 2 or more into three separate types. Also, we suggested a way of selecting a candidate for reasonable maximum overshoot in each type and developed a decision algorithm of checking whether a candidate chosen is correct maximum overshoot. In terms of two types of test, we showed that magnitude and position in time axis of maximum overshoot can be found well via such algorithm presented in this paper.

  • The color stability and purity from OLED is of current interest. Aggregation of dyes alters the device color after fabrication of the devices. Exciplex and electroplex formations have been proposed to explain the aggregate color change. We investigate the possibility of exciplex formation and propose the new electroplex state that can cause the bathochromic shift of the electroluminescence spectrum from the devices with TPD/PBD layers. The photoluminescence maximum of the device was 420nm, and the electroluminescence maximum of the device to became 480nm. The bathochromic shift cannot be attained with photoluminescence study with highly concentrated TPD/PBD mixture. This clearly indicates that the 480nm spectrum of the devices is not resulted from the exciplex formation with TPD and PBD. We observed the overshoot in EL spectrum from the OLEDs. The most intense overshoot was observed at 460nm, which may be due to the aggregates that are formed after the electric field has been removed from the devices.

  • Power overshoot phenomenon was observed in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) used non-catalyzed graphite felt as cathode. Voltage loss in MFCs was mainly caused by cathode potential loss. Cheap stainless steel scrubber, which has high conductivity, and Pt/C coated graphite felt as cathode were used for overcoming power overshoot and reducing the cathode potential loss in MFCs. The MFCs used stainless steel scrubber showed no power overshoot even slow catholyte flow rate and produced 29% enhanced maximum current density ($23.9A/m^3$) than MFCs used non-catalyzed graphite felt while the power overshoot phenomenon was existed in Pt/C coated MFCs. Increasing catholyte flow rate resulted in disappearing power overshoot of MFCs used non-catalyzed graphite felt. In addition, maximum power density and current density of both MFCs used non-catalyzed graphite felt and stainless steel scrubber increased by 2-3.5 times. Cathode potential losses in all region of activation loss, ohmic loss, and mass transport loss were reduced according to increase of catholyte flow rate. Therefore, stainless steel scrubber has advantages that are economical materials as electrode and prevents power overshoot, leading to enhance electricity generation. In addition, increasing catholyte flux is one of great solution when power overshoot caused by cathodic overpotential is observed in MFCs.

  • In the practical control systems, the dynamic range of actuatiors is limited(or saturated) when actuators are driven by sufficiently large signals. This gives rise to a nonlinearity as a result of actuator saturation. For example, the upper limit is imposed on productive capability by available factory space and capital equipment. Other examples of those kinds of actuator saturations are a maximum torque of the actua- ting motors and a throttle position in an aircraft speed control A saturating actuator may lead not only to a large overshoot during start-up and shut-down, but also to deterioration of the performance due to the uncertainties. That is, the speed of response is decreased and, possibly, the system output may not follow the lalrge reference inputs. The large-overshoot may be accompanied by rest wind-up(or called by integra- tor wind-up) which comes from controllers with integral action in saturation operation regions. Eventually, as the overshoot increases, the system has a limit cycle or becomes oscillatorily unstable. Due to these cir- cumstances, many studies are focused on the stability and robustness of the nonlinear systems with satu- rating actuator in the time-domain as well as in the frequency-domain.

  • It is well known that a multicomponent $Zr_{4l.2}Ti_{13.8}Cu_{12.5}Ni_{10}Be_{22.5}$ bulk metallic glass alloy shows good bulk glass forming ability due to its high resistance to crystallization in the undercooled liquid state. DSC and XRD have been performed to confirm the amorphous structure of the master alloy. To investigate the mechanical properties and deformation behavior of the bulk metallic $Zr_{4l.2}Ti_{13.8}Cu_{12.5}Ni_{10}Be_{22.5}$ alloy, a series of compression tests has been carried out at the temperatures ranging from $351^{\circ}C$ to $461^{\circ}C$at the various initial strain rates from $2{\times}10^4s^1$ to $2{\times}10^2s^1$. Three types of nominal stress-strain curves have been identified such as linear stress-strain relationship meaning fracture at maximum stress, plastic deformation including stress overshoot and steady-state flow, plastic deformation without stress overshoot depending on the strain rate and test temperature. Also DSC analysis for the compressed specimens was carried out to investigate the change of structure, thermal stability and crystallization behavior for the various test conditions.

  • Metaheuristic optimization approach has become the new framework for control synthesis. The main purposes of the control design are command (input) tracking and load (disturbance) regulating. This article proposes an optimal proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller design for the DC motor speed control system with tracking and regulating constrained optimization by using the cuckoo search (CS), one of the most efficient population-based metaheuristic optimization techniques. The sum-squared error between the referent input and the controlled output is set as the objective function to be minimized. The rise time, the maximum overshoot, settling time and steady-state error are set as inequality constraints for tracking purpose, while the regulating time and the maximum overshoot of load regulation are set as inequality constraints for regulating purpose. Results obtained by the CS will be compared with those obtained by the conventional design method named Ziegler-Nichols (Z-N) tuning rules. From simulation results, it was found that the Z-N provides an impractical PID controller with very high gains, whereas the CS gives an optimal PID controller for DC motor speed control system satisfying the preset tracking and regulating constraints. In addition, the simulation results are confirmed by the experimental ones from the DC motor speed control system developed by analog technology.

  • This paper deals with the Z-8000 microprocessor based optimal controller problem of large rotating system. Control algorithm consists of Global Mode and Fine Mode. In Global Mode, motor is driven with maximum torque, while, in Fine Mode, the speed of response and overshoot improved by multi-gains. Friction term of the plant was measured in the 1-st test, jerking effect by the nonlinearity of friction was compensated in the 2-nd test and the 3-rd test was carried out to finalize the control system model. Test results show that the speed of response and overshoot are highly improved.
