Purpose : The purpose of this study was to analyse early childhood teachers' perspectives and actual conditions of earthquakes and tsunami safety education. Methods : A total of 119 teachers were recruited from kindergarten and child-care center located in J city, all of whom gave consent to take part in these research. The data have been collected for 45 days from May to July in 2011. The data was analyzed by SPSS (version 17.0) and chi-square test. Results : The results of this study are summarized as follow. 1. 97.5% of the subjects considered earthquakes and tsunami safety education necessary, however, only 34.6% of them were given the education related to earthquakes and tsunami. 2. 63.9% of the early childhood teachers provided children in the kindergarten or childhood center with earthquakes and tsunami safety education, however, 30.3% of them were found to be without any experiences of earthquakes and tsunami safety education. 3. 68.5% of the teachers were informed earthquakes and tsunami safety knowledge. 4. 35.0% of respondents answered that the single session of earthquake and tsunami education was not efficient, thus expecting to receive continuing education. Conclusions : The study suggested that more teachers necessarily provide earthquake and tsunami safety education to reduce children's mortality rate in earthquakes and tsunami. The education program should be developed and systematized to improve teacher's knowledge. Moreover, the program should be continuously provided to teachers and children in the kindergarten or childhood center.
The aim of this study was to examine the short-term longitudinal effect of creativity-fostering programs for pre-early childhood teachers on their problem solving ability and self-efficacy. The participants of this study were 67 pre-early childhood teachers (36 from the experimental group and 31 from the control group) in Seoul, Kyunggi-do, and Chungcheong-do, Korea. Pre-early childhood teachers' problem solving ability and self-efficacy was measured three times. Data were analyzed with a $2{\times}3$ ($group{\times}test$) two-way analysis of variance for repeated measures. The change in problem solving and self-efficacy appeared to be dependent on the group and test. Further statistical analysis of the data indicated that the participation of creativity-fostering programs for pre-early childhood teachers was longitudinally effective on their problem solving ability and self-efficacy.
The purpose of this study was to examine the kindergarten teachers' perception and need for kindergarten consulting. The subjects in this study were 178 kindergarten teachers who worked in kindergarten in the city of Busan. The data were analyzed using the descriptive statistics by the SPSS 18.0 program. The findings of the study were as follows: First, kindergarten teachers' perceptions for kindergarten consulting were above average in all areas. Concerning the impact of the variables for kindergarten teachers, there were statistically significant differences in perceptions for kindergarten consulting according to their career, academic credential, license, and the type of instruction. Second, regarding the need of the kindergarten teachers for kindergarten consulting, the need in the area of teaching consulting was highest. This study is aimed to determine whether there is any meaningful correlation between predictors and is intended to examine the relative influences that the pedagogical content knowledge of science teaching, scientific attitudes, science teaching intentions have on their science teaching efficacy. The results, showed that the childcare center teachers' pedagogical content knowledge of science teaching, scientific attitudes, science teaching intentions, and science teaching efficacy are all correlated with each other. The teachers' science teaching efficacy are predicted by their scientific attitudes, science teaching intentions, and pedagogical content knowledge of science teaching-learning methods. Specifically, for teachers of 0 to 2-year-olds, their science teaching efficacy is predicted by their science teaching intentions and scientific attitudes. For teachers of 3 to 5-year-olds, their science teaching is affected by their scientific attitudes and their pedagogical content knowledge.
This study was aimed to explore the effect of the physical science activity based on the constructivism on young children's scientific process skills and scientific attitudes, cognitive self-esteem. The subjects consisted of 20 five-years-old children of experimental group and 20 children of control group. Children of experimental group conducted the physical science activity based on the constructivism for total six weeks. As a result of study, children who experimental group showed significant result in the scientific process skill, scientific attitude, cognitive self-esteem. The educational implications of these indicate that we need to actively develop programs to increase scientific process skills and scientific attitude, cognition self-esteem of young children through teacher's education.
The purpose of this study was to develop a multicultural education practice scale for preschool teachers and to examine the reliability and validity of the scale. Participants for this study were 310 preschool teachers from Seoul and Gyeonggi. The multicultural education practice scale for preschool teachers was consisted of 3 factors, 'multicultural national to understand', 'interactions with multicultural children' and 'multicultural culturally to understand' with 13 items. Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ was ranged from .74 to .82. The confirmatory factor analysis revealed that RMSEA=.08, SRMR=.06, NNF=.90, and CFI=.92. All these results show that the multicultural education practice scale for preschool teachers is quite reliable and valid.
This study investigated the effects of the extension activity with fifty famous paintings on the improvement of young children's creativity and emotional intelligence. A total of thirty-one preschoolers participated in the study. There were a total of 15 preschoolers in the experimental group and 16 preschoolers in the comparison group. The measuring device of creativity was the Figural Tests of Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT:Firural). And the measuring tool of emotional intelligence was the 'Emotional Intelligence Evaluation Tool for a Child by Teacher's Composer' developed by Younja Lee, Jongsook Lee, and Eunsu Shin (2000). To improve the accuracy of the experimental results from the post-test, a covariance analysis (ANCOVA) was conducted with the pre-test scores as covariate and the post-test scores as dependent variables. The statistical work with collected data was carried out by using PASW 18.0. The experimental group which participated in the extension activity with famous paintings showed improvement in the subordinate elements of creativity such as fluency, originality and abstraction of titles. Between the experimental group and comparison group, there was a meaningful difference statistically. The experimental group was also positively affected on all the subordinate elements of emotional intelligence such as awareness and expression of emotions, improvement of thinking by emotions, using ability of emotional knowledge, and control ability as the reflection of emotions. Through the activity, children became to respect the opinions of other friends.
This research aims to reveal the attitude of day-care center and preschool teachers to nutrition, while understanding the influence of their experience of participation in nutrition education programs or taking nutrition courses in school days on the degree of their nutrition knowledge scores. The 204 subjects answered the questionnaire by a self-administration method from April 3 through April 30, 1997. Following are the results of this study : The teachers thought higher of social life(50.5%) and health life(37.3%) among the 5 item of child's living guidance. 58.8% answered 'necessary' and 36.3% 'very necessary' about nutrition education in one's childhood. As to the participation in nutrition education programs, 28.4% answered 'without fail' and 55.9% 'will try'. About the meaning of the meal time, 55.4% regarded it as an occasion for the child's socialization and 30.9% as an opportunity of nutrition education. Looking into their nutrition knowledge scores in four parts, 5 points each, the average totaled 10.9$\pm$3.0 : basic nutrition as 2.7$\pm$1.2, child's nutrition as 3.0$\pm$1.2, food and cookery as 2.4$\pm$1.2, food storage and hygiene as 2.8$\pm$0.8. Those teachers who had some experience of participation in nutrition education programs earned 11.0$\pm$3.1, while the rest scored 10.3$\pm$2.7-no significant difference. On the other hand, those teachers who had experience of taking nutrition courses received in school days 11.1$\pm$2.9, whereas the rest got 10.6$\pm$3.2-no significant difference.
The purpose of this study was to obtain basic information for novice teachers' adjustment. The data from five novice teachers were collected by in-depth interviews of each subject, as well as reviewing a memo diary, journal and class diary. The results indicated that the novice teachers' experiences were categorized into difficulties in social relationships, heavy workload, stress related to making mistakes, obtaining support and assistance, adequate understanding of their field of work and so on. The model theory for their process of adjustment was found by grounded theory approach. The causal conditions include mistakes in performance of work and immaturity of managing social relationships. The contexts include age of the children, work conditions(i.e. time and space), amount of workload, unfamiliarity of new work assignments, personalities of colleagues, and high frequency of meeting parents of children. The intervening conditions are composed of a guidance program for novice teachers, support from colleagues, work rewards, and the personalities of novice teachers. The novice teacher use three strategies: trying to ignore, sharing difficulties and accessing support from friends or family, as well as willful efforts to transfer negative emotions into positive ones. The consequences of the strategies include: successful career progression, survival, and desire for leaving the field of work.
Purpose: This study was conducted to explore the professional identity of elementary school health teachers. Methods: In-depth interviews with fifteen elementary school health teachers were conducted from July 2010 to August 2012. Qualitative data collected by the researcher including transcription and field notes were analyzed through an adapted methodology based on the Grounded Theory of Strauss and Corbin. Results: Fifteen categories, 35 sub-categories and 120 concepts were obtained. The key category that was consistently maintained in identity formation was 'keeping themselves being a teacher providing nursing' which has three styles, 'focusing on health education', 'combining nursing and education' and 'focusing on providing nursing care'. Conclusion: Results of this study will provide basic information for preparing manuals regarding the range of activities in school health teachers' jobs, improving promotion and merit payment systems for school health teachers, creating support programs for them, and contributing to the formation and establishment of their professional identity.
