Analyzing Research Trend of Affective Aspects in Mathematics in Korea (수학 학습에서의 정의적 영역에 관한 국내 연구 동향 분석)

  • Correcting an imbalance between cognitive and affective aspects of mathematics in schools is recognized as a crucial issue with regards to mathematics education in Korea. Therefore, research and studies about affective aspects have been increasing and themes relating to affective aspects were diverse. Their theme included the improvement of affective aspect, investigation of factors of affective aspect, and development of measurement tools for affective aspect. The purpose of this study is to analyze and organize the research that has been done with respect to affective aspect and drive trend, implication, and their instruction to mathematics education. This study has investigated 103 studies released from 2005 to 2015 on KCI, Korea Citation Index. The results of this study are as follow. First, since released research of affective aspects in mathematics has not increased in number in the last 11 years, academic interest in the affective aspects seems lower than recent interest arousing in Korea. Second, most studies utilized quantitative research as a tool to analyze phenomena and the cause and effect of affective aspects. Third, middle school students were the most common subjects of the studies, followed by elementary school students. Fourth, the studies had various themes such as analyzing the cause and effect of affective aspect, recognizing changes of affective aspects, and measuring affective aspects. The studies, especially, focused most on analyzing how to improve affective aspects by applying it to programs such as mathematic activities and solving mathematic problems. It is necessary for future research to have a long-term perspective and to provide a space for communication. Research should not only focus on how recognize affective aspects differently, which is based on its cultural background, but also to draw affective solutions from them.

A Study on Aims for Affective Development in National Curriculum of Mathematics (수학과 국가교육과정의 정의적 영역 목표 고찰)

  • This study discusses on aims for affective development in national curriculum of mathematics. Firstly, affective characteristics of school mathematics studied in Korea are investigated. Secondly, aims for affective development in the Korean national curriculum of mathematics from the 1st curriculum to the current one are inspected. Thirdly, aims for affective development in national curriculum of Hong Kong, Singapore and Finland are researched. From the result, suggestions on the statement about aims for affective development are proposed.

Self-Regulated Learning Ability Related to Science Inquiry Skill and Affective Domain of Science in Middle School Students (중학생의 자기조절학습능력 수준에 따른 과학의 탐구능력 및 과학의 정의적 영역 특징 분석)

  • The study aims to investigate self-regulated learning ability (SRLA) of students and analyze its relationship to their science inquiry skill and affective domain of science in middle schools in Korea. For this end, the research questions include the followings: First, what level is SRLA of middle school students? Second, how does the relationship between SRLA and science inquiry skill look like? Third, how does the relationship between SRLA and affective domain of science look like? A research method employed in the study is the survey utilizing three questionnaires: a) a questionnaire of SRLA (Jung et al., 2004); b) a questionnaire of problem finding ability of the science inquiry skill (Jung et al., 2004); and c) a questionnaire of science affective domain (Seo et al., 2008, adopted from 2006 PISA Student Questionnaire). Responses to three questionnaires by 704 students from seven middle schools in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam in Korea were analyzed. The research findings were as follows: First, mean average scores of SRLA is 3.02 (${\pm}0.63$) in 5 Likert scale (1 = strongly disagree; 5 = strongly agree). Second, students with higher scores in science inquiry skill showed significantly (p<.05) higher scores in SRLA than others. Third, boys scored higher on self-efficacy scale than girls. As students advance their grade level, their affective domain levels of science significantly (p=.048) decreases, in particular, their self-efficacy level most significantly (p=.002) decreases. Fourth, SRLA was significantly (p=.000) correlated with science inquiry skill and affective domain of science. In conclusions, it appeared that the higher SRLA level of students in middle schools is, the higher level of science inquiry skill and affective domain of science is.

Psychological Effects of Gamification on Young Learners: Focusing on a Serious Game for English Phoneme Discrimination (기능성게임을 활용한 게이미피케이션 영어 발음 학습이 초등학생의 정의적 영역에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated the psychological effects of using a serious game with young learners in the English classroom compared with those of a dictionary application. A tablet PC-based serious game was created for the training of English phoneme discrimination for Korean 6th graders, and its psychological effects were measured using a paper-based survey and face-to-face interviews. The overall results revealed that the serious game had more positive psychological effects on young learners than the dictionary app. These findings provide supporting empirical evidence for using serious games in English classrooms.

The Development and Validation of the Survey of Students' Affective Characteristics in the Non-Cognitive Domain of Mathematics Learning (수학학습 정의적 영역 검사 도구 개발 연구)

  • Fostering students' positive affect related to mathematics such as attitudes toward mathematics and dispositions toward learning mathematical concepts is one of the major goals of school mathematics programs. In this study, we collected data from students at the 4-1 grade levels to develop an instrument that measures students' affect regarding mathematics learning. To develop the instrument, we first conducted focus group interviews, which we recorded, transcribed, and analyzed. We sorted the results according to seven components of the non-cognitive domain of mathematics learning, which drew from taxonomical constructs of previous research. We then conducted a pilot study in which we administered the instrument as a pretest and a posttest. We chose the final items based on confirmatory factor analysis and a reliability test of the pre and posttest scores. The final instrument contains 24 items, which are classified according to the seven components: interest, attitudes, value, external motivation, internal motivation, learning conation, and efficacy. We anticipate this instrument will be useful for studies that need to measure students' non-cognitive characteristics in relation to learning mathematics.

수학적 의사소통불안에 따른 소집단의 구성 ${\cdot}$ 협동학습이 정의적 영역에 미치는 효과 -중학교 1학년을 중심으로-

  • 본 연구의 목적은 수학교실에서 의사소통 불안에 따른 이질 집단과 동질 집단으로 소집단 구성을 달리하였을 때 정의적 영역에서 소집단 협동학습 효과의 차이가 있는지 알아보는데 있다. 이러한 연구 목적을 달성하기 위해 다음과 같은 연구 문제를 설정하였다. 첫째, 의사소통 불안에 따른 동질 집단과 이질 집단간에 정의적 영역(수학적 태도, 자아존중감)에서 차이가 있는가? 둘째, 동질 집단과 이질 집단간의 비교에서 어느 집단의 불안 수준이 정의적 영역(수학적 태도, 자아존중감)에 더 긍정적인 효과가 있는가? 이러한 연구 문제를 해결하기 위하여 독립변인은 협동학습에서의 의사소통 불안에 따른 집단 구성 형태이고 종속변인은 정의적 영역(수학적 태도와 자아존중감)인 원인비교 연구 설계(casual-comparative research design)를 세워 원인비교 연구를 실시하였다. 본 연구의 결과로부터 다음과 같은 결론을 얻을 수 있다. 첫째, 의사소통 불안에 따른 집단 구성방법이 수학과 소집단 협동학습의 효과, 특히 자아존중감 향상에 영향을 끼치기 때문에, 효과적인 협동학습을 위해서 학생들의 의사소통 불안을 측정하여 이질 집단으로 구성할 필요가 있다. 둘째, 의사소통 불안에 따른 집단 구성을 했을 때 이질 집단의 불안 하위수준 학생들이 자아존중감 향상에 가장 큰 효과를 볼 수 있다. 결론적으로, 수학 교실에서의 의사소통 불안은 집단의 상호작용 행동에 영향을 준다고 말할 수 있고 의사소통 불안에 따른 이질 집단은 자아존중감 향상에 효과적인 집단 구성방법임을 시사한다.

Teaching World Geography Using Travelog To Reinforce Affective Domain (세계지리 수업에서 여행기를 활용한 정의적 영역의 보완)

  • This study aims to seek for solution to reinforce affective domain in World Geography instruction using travelog. The result can be summarized as follows. First, The World Geography textbooks are given too much emphasis on cognitive domain. This overevaluation is due to the fact that official World Geography curriculum is concentrated in cognitive domain. Second, Travelogs can be effectively used for reinforcing affective domain in World Geography education. They can reinforce the various attitudes and values that students need. I hope that this study could activate discussion on affective domain and graphic skills in geography education.

The Effect of Problem-posing Activities on the Affective Domain of Mathematics (문제제기 활동이 수학에 대한 정의적 영역에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 'problem posing from mathematical problems' on the students' affective domain of mathematics, and to conduct evaluation and management of teachers' respectively. The quantitative and qualitative approaches were combined to analyze the changes in the affective achievement of all the students and individual students in the study. The conclusions of this study are as follows: First, problem-posing class improved the problem-solving ability and meaningful experience in the learning activity itself, thus improving students' self-confidence, interest, value, and desire to learn. Second, The students' affective domain of mathematics should be emphasized, and systematic evaluation and management should be carried out from the first grade of middle school to high school senior in mathematics. Third, it is necessary to present and disseminate them in detail on the national-level to evaluation system and method of affective domain of mathematics. Therefore, the teacher should actively implement the problem-posing teaching and learning in the classroom lesson and help students' affective achievement. and teachers need to measure and manage the affective achievement of all students on a regular basis.

Analysis of Learning Objectives on Elementary School Biology (초등학교 자연과 생물 영역의 교육 목표 분석)

  • The consistency and balance of objectives by objective domains in units, sub-units and instructional units were investigated. The 6th elementary biology curricular teaching guidebooks were analysed. Domains of objectives are cognitive, inquiry process, instrumental skill, creative, affective and STS. Cognitive objectives were most dominant in all units, sub-units and instructional units. But no objective for creative domain were suggested. In unit and sub-unit, proportions of objectives were cognitive, inquiry process, affective, instrumental skill and STS domains in order. Objectives for cognitive and inquiry process domains were more than others in instructional units, Except cognitive and inquiry process domains, objectives for the others were not consistent in all units, sub-units and instructional units. Especially, the percentages of objectives for affective domain decreased in units, sub-units and instructional units orderly. These resulted from teaching objective domains categorized formally, Thus, it is necessary to develope curriculum and textbook to be consistent and balanced with objective domains and reflect upon the characteristics of them.

Understanding the Character of University Students: Gender Differences and Pathways of Character Factors (대학생 인성에 대한 이해: 성차와 인성요인의 경로)

  • In order to understand the character of university students, this study confirmed the gender tendency of whether there is a difference in the character of university students according to gender, and if there is a difference, what characteristics there are. It was confirmed through which pathways the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral factors, which are the character factors of university students, affect them. The research results are as follows. First, according to gender, the character of university students was found to be different in all areas of cognition, emotion, and behavior. It was confirmed that female students were higher than male students in all areas. Second, as for the pathways of university student character factors, it was confirmed that the higher the level of the cognitive domain, the higher the level of the affective domain, and the behavioral domain was improved. The results derived from this study can be objective basic data for developing a character education course or program for university students.
