This study examined the construct validity of a Korean translated version of the Gifted Rating Scales-School Form (GRS-S). Data were collected from five elementary schools in a metropolitan area and a midsize town in South Korea. Confirmatory factor analysis results indicated that the original factor structure (6-factor solution) fit the data collected from the teachers. However, the 6-factor solution did not fit the data collected from the parents. Thus, exploratory factor analysis was conducted for the parent data. The results showed that seven factors were extracted, and the factors explained 71.96% of the total variance. Unlike the original factor structure, some items of the academic ability scale were grouped with intellectual ability scale, and a creativity scale item and another academic ability scale item were an independent factor. The study outcomes provide preliminary support for a translated version of the GRS-S with elementary students in Korea. More detailed interpretations and implications of the results are discussed in the study.
This research looked into the recognitions of a teacher's discernment & recommendations of gifted elementary students targeting 184 elementary school teachers in Seoul district and compared and contrasted their awareness in order to confirm whether there existed a difference in the discernment of gifted elementary students according to their awareness level of professionalism in gifted and talented education. The research results are as follows: There appeared a significant difference in teachers' recognitions level of professionalism in gifted education according to their experience relevant to a gifted elementary student. The teachers, in the process of observations & nominations of gifted elementary students, pointed out creativity, learning motive and attitude as the highest judging standard and also regard such elements as discerning criteria of gifted students. In the process of observations & nominations of gifted elementary students, it was found that teachers' recognitions of importance of discerning criteria of gifted elementary students in relation to parents or fellow teachers' recommendations appeared relatively lower than their recognitions of importance in relation to learning ability, creativity, learning motive and attitude. The research results showed that a group of teachers, who have a high recognitions level of the professionalism in gifted education in the process of observations & nominations of gifted students, perceive the realm of creativity, learning motive, and attitude as more important. This suggests the necessity of elevating teachers' awareness level of professionalism in gifted and talented education in order to discern high-quality gifted students in the process observations & nominations of gifted elementary students putting emphasis on the realm of creativity, learning motive, and attitude.
The purpose of this study is to find out the role and responsibilities of coordinators for gifted classes in Korean schools, by examining the role and responsibilities, and qualifications of coordinators' at gifted classes in America and England. To do this, first, we examine the tasks and role of Korean gifted classes in elementary and secondary schools. Then we look into the coordinators of gifted programs of public schools and university programs in America and England. The coordinators of America and England are experts in gifted programs who have understanding and knowledge on gifted education, and they work for everything regarding gifted programs, such as designing the gifted education program, dealing documents regarding gifted programs, and assisting school personnel in the identification, development, teaching and evaluation of gifted students. The coordinators are the most important and core person in gifted programs. However, in Korean school, the role of coordinators is one of the school tasks of which any teacher has to take charge and there is no regulation on the qualification of coordinators. Therefore we suggest to set up the regulations of qualification, role and responsibilities of gifted programs' coordinators, by understanding that the role of coordinators is important.
Educating gifted students in invention is a totally new area for researchers as well as educators. Establishing the theoretical concept of the gifted in invention has been a challenging task to many education researchers in Korea for last several years. This study was conducted to understand characteristics of the gifted in invention with the eventual purpose to conceptualize 'giftedness in invention.' The Future Mind by Gardner was adopted as the frame for categorizing the characteristics of the gifted in invention. Based on Five Minds, this study listed 25 factors with their 80 characteristics after intensive literature review and field surveys. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to establishing the theoretical base of educating the gifted in invention, to identifying gifted youngsters to be great inventors, and to designing the educational programs for them.
The intent of this study is to fully investigate the major issues and challenges related to characteristics of gifted children from multicultural families in Korea. The gifted students of multicultural families are currently categorized as disadvantaged gifted students, but they need to be defined more deeply and separately due to the continuous increase of multicultural families. Most culturally different gifted children have common problem such as integrating into Korean culture, often suffering from emotional problems and their parents' economic disadvantage. Due to these problems a variety of issues arise. First, culturally diverse talented students have problems due to the alienation and the lack of equal opportunity given to gifted children of multicultural families in need. Secondly, another issue is whether or not the selection of these students for a gifted and talented program is administered equally and fairly. Thirdly students and teachers may have difficulty forming relationships. Fourth, there is a dire need to address the issue of a lack of formal education policy. for these students. Fifth, the formulation of a gifted and talented program solely for multicultural students is necessary. Sixth, educating the parents of such students remains a critical challenge. Seventh, the last issue arises from a lack of research regarding the identity of multicultural gifted children in Korea. In this study, we discuss each of these issues in-depth. Additionally the future of Korean Multicultural Gifted selection, training in the field, school direction and it's implications are discussed.
While many research focused learners as those who excel in mathematics or science, the identification of learners with potential or demonstrated talent in visual art has also been the meaningful research topic. Since these learners exhibit high performance capability in intellectual, creative and artistic areas, they require services or programs not ordinarily provided by the schools. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the current status of a program for an elementary math class for gifted students in Daegu and to propose a remedy. The main results of this thesis are as follows. First, goals of the gifted class and the basic operation direction were satisfactory, however plans for parent training programs and self evaluation of the classes were not presented. Therefore, it needs when and how to do for specific plan of gifted class evaluation and parent training programs. Second, The annual instruction plan has been restricted to the subject matter education and field trips and has not included specific teaching methods in accordance with the contents of learning program. The management of gifted classes, therefore, requires not only the subject matter education and field trips but also output presentations, leadership programs, voluntary activities, events and camps which promote the integral development of gifted students. Third, there is no duplication of content to another grade, and various activities did not cover the whole scope of math topics(eg. number and operation, geometry, measurement, pattern) equally. In accordance with elementary mathematics characteristics, teachers should equally distribute time in whole range of mathematics while they teach students in the class because it is critical to discover gifted students throughout the whole curriculum of elementary mathematics. Fourth, as there are insufficient support and operational lack of material development, several types of programs are not utilized and balanced. It is necessary for teachers to try to find the type of teaching methods in accordance with the circumstances and content, so that students can experience several types of programs. If through this study, we can improve the development, management and quality of gifted math programs, it would further the development of gifted education.
