  • As research results, male schoolchildren were found to solve problems more easily in the area of basic process skills while female schoolchildren were found to solve problems in the area of integrated process skills. Schoolboys showed the high tendency to solve problems in a planning pattern by memory, or solving pattern in which they are fully aware of the contents of both questions and choices in answer sheets, or the pattern which they are fully aware of distracters in answer sheets; in contrast, schoolgirls showed a high tendency to get a good result by analyzing both questions & choices in answer sheets or analyzing a chart, graph and illustration, which explains that female schoolchildren tend to solve problems in more diverse ways than male schoolchildren. In case of a poor achiever, male schoolchildren tend to make a failure while trying to find answers in an inadequately understood state or trying to solve on mistaken memories while doing questions immediately while female schoolchildren showed a lot of solving patterns based on mistaken memories or wrong analyses of a chart, illustration, or graph. Such results are believed to offer the implications on the understanding of male/female schoolchildren in their problem-solving pattern of their exploratory ability in elementary science and on its subsequent program development.

  • Science field trip is a comprehensive learning activity in which students can solve problems by themselves, whose importance is emphasized in learning for the gifted. But because not much study has been done yet on this, and convergent activities such as solving too many problems or requesting given answers have generally been done, it has been criticized for not being enough to develop the abilities of gifted Students. Therefore, this study attempted to analyze the activity process of the gifted through field trip to which open inquiry is adapted so that the demands of the gifted can be met, and the abilities of the gifted can be brought out. The study focused on 18 gifted elementary science students at Institute of Science Gifted Education, Cheongju National University of Education, and in the field trip process of the students, analyzed the types of establishment of inquiry problems and inquiry process, and the behavioral characteristics of gifted science students shown during field trip activity through field trip proceedings, transcript contents, poster materials, questionnaires, etc. As a result, more inquiry problems were established after than before inquiry, and the level of inquiry problems was also higher after inquiry. The solution process for inquiry problems of the gifted science students were done in the following order: planning, inquiring, follow-up inquiring and consolidating. But it proceeded to open inquiry process, the next stage being decided according to circumstances. Also, in the inquiry that the students did, diverse factors were revealed such as basic and integrative inquiries, and especially, the students were competent in analyzing the results after transforming and interpreting them. And the analysis of the interaction among the students showed many behavioral traits of talented science students.

  • This study investigated the impact of grouping methods on free inquiry implementation through the use of mixed research methods. Some 113 7th graders and 2 science teachers in two middle schools participated in this study. The 113 students who participated in this study were grouped by homogeneity and heterogeneity according to scientific inquiry skills and personality types respectively, and performed free inquiry activities on the same subject for three weeks. Data were collected by means of a test on science inquiry skills and from focus group interviews with 36 students and in-depth interviews with 2 teachers. The quantitative results of this study showed that homogeneous grouping was more effective than heterogeneous grouping in improvement of scientific inquiry skills. Meanwhile, the qualitative results revealed both the students and teachers perceived that it was effective to compose a small group according to their affective quality than their cognitive quality. Particularly, most of the students preferred the method of small group from the personality types. Some students and both teachers proposed that it is necessary to collect enough information on students and to use them in mixture with the method of small group according to the affective quality.

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the substance of the reflective inquiry of students and obtain educational suggestion to the inquiry class for the promotion of the reflective inquiry, by checking out which characteristics the reflective inquiry showed according to the modes of interaction of small group in highschool earth science inquiry class. The result of study is shown as follows. At the stage of developmentand conclusion, the reflective inquiry relating the task context to data context was often appeared on the group of the modes of comfort interaction, but it was very rare on the group of modes of confrontation interaction. And the reflective inquiry scale value of the latter was two times lower than the former, The comfort group showed much more reflective inquiry statements quantitatively and performed much more meaningful reflective inquiry relating the task context to the data context. The heterogeneous group in the inquiry ability and the cognitive style showed confrontation interaction modes in the affective domain, having the most negative influence on the reflective inquiry. The homogeneous group both in the cognitive style and the inquiry ability showed the comfort interaction mode, having positive int1uence on the reflective inquiry.

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the factor that causes the difference on understanding the aim and perception of laboratory activities between teachers and students. For this study, in-depth interview was conducted for sixth grade students and teachers of 10 classes. The questionnaire of the interview can be divided into 3 sections: the aim of laboratory activities, whether teachers present the aim of laboratory activities, the method of laboratory class progress and the evaluation method. The factors that bring about the difference between the teachers and the students on perception of the aim are the absence of proper guidance on the aim of laboratory activities, the laboratory classes that the progress out of teachers' intention and evaluation method that is the performed without any relationship with the aim of the laboratory activities. Because the teacher-intended aim of laboratory activities is not properly presented, students can't percept the accurate aim. Even though teachers recognize the importance of the improvement of science process skill acquired through laboratory activities, this is not delivered practically in the class and students also can't percept the importance of science process skill.
