Regarding current rapid innovations and applications of information and telecommunication technologies as well as economical requirements, modeling and simulation (M&S) plays an increasingly important role for the planning, development and operation of high-tech products and systems. M&S has to seen as a key technology for multi-facetted analysis of complex systems during their life-cycles. For reasons as accuracy, credibility and cost-effectiveness, the selection of adequate and effective M&S techniques and tools is of significant importance. Regarding these aspects, this paper summarizes the basic methodological modeling approach for effective product and system modeling. In addition, besides a classification of different basic architectures and taxonomies combining knowledge-processing and simulation techniques, the paper describes some practical implementations and experiences.

Simulation has been evolved with the advance of computer and technique of modeling application systems. Early simulations were numerical analysis of engineering models known as continuous simulation, analysis of random events using various random number generators thus named as Monte Carlo simulation, iud analysis o(\\\\`queues which are prevalent in many real world systems including manufacturing, transportation, telecommunication. Discrete-event simulation has been used far modeling and analyzing the systems with waiting lines and inefficient delays. These simulations, either discrete-event, continuous, or hybrid, have played a key role in industrial age by helping to design and implement the efficient real world systems. In the information age which has been brought up by the advent of Internet, e-business has emerged. E-business, any business using Internet, can be characterized by the network of extended enterprises---extended supply and demand chains. The extension of value chains spans far reaching scope in business functions and space globally. It also extends to the individual customer, customer preferences and behaviors, to find the best service and product fit for each individual---mass customization. Simulation should also play a key role in analyzing and evaluating the various phenomena of e-business where the phenomena can be characterized by dynamics, uncertainty, and complexity. In this tutorial, applications of simulation to e-business phenomena will be explained and illustrated. Examples are the dynamics of new economy, analysis of e-business processes, virtual manufacturing system, digital divide phenomena, etc. Partly influenced by e-business, a new trend of simulation has emerged called agent-based simulation, Agent-based simulation is a technique of simulation using software agent that have autonomy and proactivity which are useful in analyzing and integrating numerous individual customer's behavior. One particular form of agent-based simulation is swarm. This tutorial concludes with the illustration of swarm or swarm Intelligence applied to various e-business applications, and future directions and implications of this new trend of simulation.

Unlike that of most management science methodologies, the focus in systems thinking is not on \\\"solving\\\" problems or seeking an optimal solution. Conventional problem solving does not explicitly consider the context of the problem. This implies that the \\\"hospital financial management problem\\\" could be neatly isolated from its environmental and external factors. System thinking and system archetypes, in contrast, acknowledges the messiness of the world and views a problem in the context of its environment. This is one reason why qualitative variables play an important role in system thinking, as these variables represent conditions or phenomena that cannot be measured or accounted in a strictly quantitative approaches. In this paper we present specific healthcare system archetypes which consider such external influences in the healthcare industry in Australia and observe their behavior over time. behavior over time.

The purpose of this paper is estimating environmental carving capacity of Seoul Metropolitan Area for a sustainable city management using system dynamics model. A sustainable development requires a society to define sustainability constraints or environmental limits, environmental carving capacity. Environmental carving capacity can be defined as the level of human activity which a region can sustain at an acceptable quality of life level. This concept of environmental carving capacity has several important application to sustainable city planning and management. If the limitation of a human activity can be supported by a scientific data on carving capacity, the resulting decision and actions could more easily win public support for a sustainable development. However, one of the key issues is how to operationalize the carving capacity. In this paper, the environmental carving capacity was operationalized as a maximum number of industry structure, population, and housing that can sustain certain level of environmental quality of Seoul Metropolitan Area. The model developed in this paper consisted off sectors: population, housing, industry, land, and environmental sector. The model limits its main focus on the NO
$_2$ level of ambient air of Seoul. Carving capacity Seoul Metropolitan Area was estimated by figuring out the maximum number of population, industry structure, housing at an equilibrium point that sustain a desirable NO$_2$ level. Based on the model estimation, several policy implications for a sustainable city management was discussed. -
New product development has been a key element fur organizational evolution. The bulk of research about new product strategy has focused solely on new product development function itself. This paper investigates cross-functional elements in new product development. More specifically, we suggest that there must exist a fit between new product strategy and value chain strategy. It means that, in order to support new product development activity, there must exist a relevant value chain strategy. We consider three types of integration - internal integration, customer integration, and supplier integration - as strategic elements of value chain strategy. For the case of new product strategy, we consider market newness and product technology unfamiliarity as strategic elements. We also consider two types of learning characteristic, i.e., \\\"fast-adaptive learning\\\" and \\\"slow-adaptive leaning\\\" as control factor. Learning characteristic represents firms organizational capability related with organizational learning. For example, fur fast-adaptive learning case, the effect of integration appears early in time. System dynamics simulation is employed to verify our research framework. The results exhibit that there must exist cross-functional relationships between value chain strategy and new product strategy in order to shorten total development time.al development time.

This paper is concerned with development of a multi-attribute structured decision model. In this study, we used AHP(analytic hierarchy process) and fuzzy set ranking methodology to overcome the multi-attributes structured decision problems ; such as multi-objective, multi-criterion, and multi-attributes. We proposed a 2-step approach : 1) individual evaluation and 2) integration of individual evaluations. In the first step, we define the performance factors and construct ana]isis structure, and in the second step performance evaluation by individual evaluators, and in second step, the results of individual evaluations are integrate. Also we developed a systematic and practical computer program to solve the problems according to the proposed methods. The proposed approach was known to be effective through a set of sample problems.

Since 1998, government-led Korean venture business boom now proceeds into the stage of market-oriented venture business growth. At such a moment, this research is to clarify the relations between the Critical Success Factors of Korean venture businesses, based on domestic and foreign literature surveys and inquiry surveys over domestic venture capitalists. This research starts from the necessity to overcome the limits of the existing researches by uni-dimensional Korean venture businesses and to manifest the multi-dimensional relations between the success factors from the various viewpoints. And this research adopts System-Dynamics methodology to manifest and utilize relations among those factors, avoiding the existing metrical approaches. This research can be called a new approach to the current ecosystems of Korean venture in which whether venture businesses in Korea succeed is considered to depend on the list on the stock market. For this, this research implemented verification analysis through the simulations of each factor at various levels to build causality map which clarifies the causality of success factors of venture businesses through the System-Dynamics methodology and to utilize it as a way of support to decision-making of venture businesses. This research will be able to suggest the reactions depending on various internal and external situations. This research tried to manifest the causality map of each factor on the basis of inquiry surveys and literature surveys to clarify Feedback among each factor by the SD methodology and simulate it. This research will be a basis to establish the chance to bolster up the still fragile probing research into success factors of substructure of venture businesses through the suggestion of possibility as an efficient analysis framework via the verification of SD methodology and the utilization of results of this research.

Since the transportation cost takes about two thirds of the logistics cost of Korean firms, significant reduction of business logistics cost can hardly be achieved without effectively reducing the transportation cost. Although consolidated transportation has been regarded as the most promising strategy for reducing the transportation cost, it has not been successful in practice. In this paper we consider a consolidated transportation for the factories located in a limited area such as industrial complexes, where loads of various volume and weight are consolidated. We want to group the loads to assign to a truck of various size such that the total transportation cost is minimized, while the maximum volume constraint and weight constraint of each truck are satisfied. We suggest four heuristic algorithms to efficiently determine the groups of loads; and conduct a computer simulation to evaluate the performances of the algorithms.

Experimental design in simulation provides an efficient way of economizing simulation runs since a considerable number of simulation runs that originally were planned can be reduced by this approach. This experimental design method is an active area of research together with the output analysis and so no single panacea seems to exist so far. Thus, selection of techniques of experimental design and output analysis more lithely depends upon the objective of simulation analysis, budget constraint and sometimes the analysts subjective judgment. This paper attempts to describe an experimental design methodology for port investment analysis using a case study in a bulk terminal in Korea. Detailed display will be focused on simulation period, warm-up period, the number of replications needed in production runs after brief explanation on the system configuration.

This paper provides a short description of the COMPASS-model which is a concept for the simulation of multiway systems. The focus of the COMPASS-model is to offer an opportunity to investigate the effects of redistribution strategies on logistic and monetary values in a system of returnable transport items (RTI). The modeling concept consists of five modules: topology, system load, distribution, redistribution, cost. It includes the integration of highly sophisticated evolutionary algorithms for the optimal solving of complex capacitated vehicle routing problems (CVRP) which are typical for RTI-systems. The results of first experiments with a COMPASS-based prototype are repeated. They reveal some basic regularities in RTI-systems.

This paper is on 3D virtual reality simulator for terminal in connection with terminal operation system in real terminal in order to reflex complicated terminal operation and environment. This simulator has been developed based on knowledge of terminal planning and operation analysis and advanced software technologies that TSB has accumulated over 10 years. In this study, the simulator generates terminal layout and component of terminal in the same environments as the real terminal in Ohi, Japan and uses real operation system using real planning data in the past in order to describe 3D VR simulation that integrates container handling equipment and real time communication of job ordering. In addition, it is suggested various statistics and analysis report can be used to derive decision supporting factors that optimize design of terminal and improve operation, which will eventually increase terminal productivity.

Edge detection is an important problem in computer vision and image understanding. Because the threshold is difficult to properly determine, edge images gained by the usually gradient-based segmentation methods are often tend to have many disjoint or overlapping boundaries, which makes the edge images spinous. In this paper, a practical multilevel morphological filter is presented for smoothing spinous edge images. The experimental results show that the method is effective in dealing with the images of a target in the sky.

We propose a PC cluster using general-purpose microprocessors and a high-speed network for simulating ANN (Artificial Neural Network) processes on Linux OS. We apply this cluster to intelligent information processing such as ANN simulation. The elapsed time for simulating ANNs can be reduced from 7,295 seconds by a PE (Processing Element) to 1,226 seconds by six PEs. The reliability of a pattern-classification using ANNs can be improved by the proposed ANN, Randomized-ANN. In order to generate a Randomized-ANN, we choose three ANNs and combine the output results from three huts by means of logical AND. Results are as follows: The mean correct answer rate is 94.4%, the mean wrong answer rate is only 0.1 %, and the mean unknown answer rate is 5.5 %. We make sure that Randomized-ANN approach reduces the mean wrong answer rate within a tenth part and improves the reliability of Japanese coin classification.

Soft sensor is an effective method to deal with the estimation of variables, which are difficult to measure because of the reasons of economy or technology. Fuzzy logic system can be used to develop the soft sensor model by infinite rules, but the fuzzy dividing of variable sets is a key problem to achieve an accurate fuzzy logic model, In this paper, we proposed a new method to develop soft sensor model based on fuzzy neural network. First, using a novel method to divide the variable fuzzy sets by the process input and output data. Second, developing the fuzzy logic model based on that fuzzy set dividing. After that, expressing the fuzzy system with a fuzzy neural network and getting the initial soft sensor model based FNN. Last, adjusting the relative parameters of soft sensor model by the BP learning method. The effectiveness of the method proposed and the preferable generalization ability of soft sensor model built are demonstrated by the simulation.

Federated process framework is introduced responding to market\\`s needs to gain benefits of process information sharing in a virtual enterprise. The framework is verified by implementing its prototype system. However, it is very difficult to integrate developed prototype system with operating legacy systems to show its applicability. Thus, a test bed approach is widely adopted to provide a system environment that imitates the operations of real legacy systems and their interactions. In this paper, we described implementation detail of test bed imitating the real-world workflow systems. We also show its contribution and results of the prototype system that was implemented on the test bed.

Simulation is used to reduce a risk involved in the new project and decision-making in an organization and to save cost and time by forecasting different situations. The objectives of this research are to acknowledge the need of simulation through the real life sample and to encourage the use of the simulation method in the future consulting project by continuously making the necessary improvements. This research analyzed the effectiveness of the simulation based on the sample use of simulation method in 1994 and 1997 for the BPR project of certification issuance process at the Supreme Court. In order to evaluate the value of the proposed simulation model, we examined the gap, which existed between the simulation result and the operational data collected by visiting the actual sites where AROS (Automated Registry Office System: automation system developed by LG-EDS Systems) is being utilized. We also identified the causes for the existing gap. According to the analysis result, (1) the gap came from the status change of thinking that the concentration of certification issuance request has eased after the computerization, (2) the gap existed in the operational process because they failed to consider the situational factors of each registry office in the simulation model, and (3) lastly the gap came from the difficulty of formulating the mathematical model for predicting the complex and diverse behavior pattern of individuals requesting the certification issuance. In order to narrow the existing gaps, we made a proposal to improve the certification issuance process where software of certification issuance vending machine was upgraded in order to help the people to use the service conveniently, more part time workers were hared when there was a overload of certification issuance request, and the quality of the certification Issuance vending machine is improved, In this research, we examined an efficient way of resource allocation based on the simulation conducted in 1994 and 1997. By reflecting changes since the simulation of 1994 and allocating the clerk and machine based on the predicted results of the simulation, we maximized the efficiency of the certification issuance process. In conclusion, this research examined the future usability of simulation method based on the analysis result and identified the key issues to consider when using the simulation method in the future consulting project.

A lumped electrical circuit is an approximate representation of the field within a curtain frequency range. The finite element modelling is a synonym of the equivalent circuit. The electric conduction field and electric potential wave field have been modelled by an admittance network and an LC low-pass filter network. Here in the present paper, the equivalent magnetic circuit representation is created for a magnetostatic field by the finite element modelling in two dimension.

Acoustic field in steady-state is characterized by a Helmholtz equation. The transmission characteristics of acoustic wave devices is however influenced by the presence of the mean flow in the medium. The effect of the mean How introduces additional terms in the equation. In the present paper, two approaches are considered. One is that the equation is directly discretized by FEM for one-dimensional and the axisymmetric case. Another is that the equation is first transformed into the standard Helmholtz equation which is solved by BEM. The numerical demonstrations are made for the axisymmetric FEM and the three-dimensional BEM modeling. The numerical examination for a straight circular duct is first considered. The solutions are compared wish the analytical ones. The examination is then extended to the case when the mean How is locally present in a muser with expansion chamber.

The resonators made of piezoelectric crystals such as a quartz crystal are widely used. Their frequency-temperature characteristics are of primary importance for their applications to the frequency control devices. The characteristics estimation is useful for determining their design parameters. In the present paper, several types of resonators are numerically analyzed. The numerical solutions are made using 3-D Finite Element Modeling, and the results are compared with the theoretical values whenever they are available. To demonstrate the validity of the present numerical approach, the application is made to the analysis of the plates with some well-established cutting angles. For the resonator stable with temperature change, the cutting angle is important in which the temperature coefficient of the first order is chosen to be zero. The rotated Y-cut plates in thickness-shear mode are considered. The equivalent circuit representation is often used fur describing the characteristics at the electrical terminals which enables the circuit analysis including the effect of temperature change by using the circuit simulators. The equivalent circuit parameters are obtained by fitting the admittance-frequency curve from the finite element analysis.

This paper proposes a new contour detection method and adaptive reconstruction scheme for the cylindrical organs, such as blood vessels or arteries. Furthermore, we present java-based navigation controller which has been built to examine the inside of cylindrical objects. Tn the preprocessing procedure, a few preprocessing image filters are applied in order to remove unwanted artifacts from the medical images and to estimate threshold values for the object of interest. We define a context-free grammar, which is proper fur properties of contours of cylindrical objects. In the next procedure, we extract contours using advanced radial gradient method and represent contours as context-free grammar derivation trees. We build polygons between two contours efficiently by traversing the derivations trees of the contours. We fly through the reconstructed virtual models using java-based navigation controller and VRML viewer.

Virtual Reality (VR) is a new technology that enables humans to communicate with a computer, It allows the user to see, hear, fuel and interact in a three-dimensional virtual world created graphically. Virtual Reality Therapy (VRT), based on this sophisticated technology, has been recently used in the treatment of subjects diagnosed with acrophobia. Acrophobia is a disorder that is characterized by marked anxiety upon exposure to heights, avoidance of heights, and a resulting impairment in functioning. Conventional virtual reality systems for the treatment of acrophobia have limitations, such as overly expensive devices or somewhat unrealistic graphic scenes. The goal of this study is to develop an inexpensive and more realistic virtual environment in which to perform an exposure therapy fur acrophobia. It runs on a personal computer, and a virtual scene ova bunge-jump tower in the middle of a large city. The virtual scenario includes an open tin surrounded by props beside a tower, which allows the patient to feel a sense of heights. The effectiveness of the VR environment was evaluated through the clinical treatment of a subject who was suffering from the fear of heights. Based on pre- and post- questionnaires and subjective comments from the subject. This virtual reality environment proved to be an effective and realistic tool fur the treatment of acrophobia.

This paper presents a progressive algorithm for reconstructing a 3D structure from a given 2D sketch drawing (edge-vertex graph without hidden line removal) according to the user's sketch order. While previous methods reconstruct a 3D structure at once, the proposed method progressively calculate a 3D structure by optimizing the coordinates of vertices of an object according to the sketch order. The progressive method reconstructs the most plausible 3D object quickly by applying 3D constraints that are derived from the relationship between the object and the sketch drawing in the optimization process. The progressive reconstruction algorithm is discussed, and examples from a working implementation are given.

In this paper, we present a new heuristic algorithm fur buffer allocation in FMS (Flexible Manufacturing System). It is conducted by using a genetic algorithm and simulation. First, we model the system by using a simulation software, \"Arena\". Then, we apply a genetic algorithm to achieve an optimal solution. VBA blocks, which are kinds of add-in functions in Arena, are used to connect Arena with the genetic algorithm. The system being modeled has seven workstations, one loading/unloading station, and three AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicle). Also it contains three products, which each have their own machining order and processing times. We experimented with two kinds of buffer allocation problems with a proposed heuristic algorithm, and we will suggest a simple heuristic approach based on processing times and workloads to validate our proposed algorithm. The first experiment is to find a buffer profile to achieve the maximum throughput using a finite number of buffers. The second experiment is to find the minimum number of buffers to achieve the desired throughput. End of this paper, we compare the result of a proposed algorithm with the result of a simple buffer allocation heuristic based on processing times and workloads. We show that the proposed algorithm increase the throughput by 7.2%.t by 7.2%.

Semiconductor wafer fabrication is a business of high capital investment and fast changing nature. To be competitive, the production in a fab needs to be effectively planned and scheduled starting from the ramping up phase, so that the business goals such as on-time delivery, high output volume and effective use of capital intensive equipment can be achieved. In this paper, we propose Stand Alone layout and In-Line layout are analyzed and compared while varying number of device variable changes. The comparison is performed through simulation using ProSys; a window 98 based discrete system simulation software, as a tool for comparing performance of two proposed layouts. The comparison demonstrates that when the number of device variable change is small, In-Line layout is more efficient in terms of production quantity. However, as the number of device variable change is more than 14 titles, Stand Alone layout prevails over In-Line layout.

Present CAM technology cannot provide important physical property such as cutting farce and machined surface. Thus, the selection of cutting conditions still depends on the experience of an expert or on the machining data handbook in spite of the developed CAM technology. This paper presents an advanced methodology to help the worker to determine optimum cutting condition for CHC machining that excludes the need for expertise of machining data handbook. The virtual machining system presented in this paper can simulate the real machining states such as cutting farce and machined surface error. And virtual machining system can schedule feed rate to adjust the cutting force to the reference force.

In this research, we are trying to develop a framework to evaluate the prevention program for Tsunami disaster based on the Multi-agent simulation model. Tsunami has arisen by the earthquake. It happened after flew minutes or few hours when it occurred. It is clear that Tsunami will come after earthquake and from seashore. If we prevent the damage by Tsunami, we should make people who is in the seashore and lived near the seaside escape from there. Moreover we must forecast the escape activity from Tsunami. Former research of this field, some researches try to forecast the escape activity as macro level. However, people who escape from Tsunami is differ from their physical ability and ability of information processing. It needs a more accuracy model to forecast the escape activity of them. Furthermore they make a decision step by step using the various information. Therefore escape activity from Tsunami will describe using an agent based model which can only treat the information processing of human being. In this paper, we develop the evacuation model from Tsunami disaster using the Multi agent based model. The purpose of this study is to analyze the human action pattern when Tsunami occurred, and to make an accurately assessment for damages by Tsunami. The Fujisawa city government is planning and operating the various prevention program far Tsunami. However nobody assess it, because they do not have any simulation models for Tsunami disaster. If they want to set an effective prevention program for Tsunami, they should have any kinds of simulation model. The results of this study are 1) To develop the Multi agent based evacuees escape activity model. 2) Assess the damage of Tsunami in Fujisawa-City.

The approach to predict time series without neglecting the fluctuation in a short period is tried by using a digital FIR filter and a neural network. The differential waveform of the Nikkei average closing price is filtered by the FIR band-pass filter of 101 length. It is filtered into the five frequency bands of 0-1Hz, 1-2Hz, 2-3Hz, 3-4Hz and 4-5Hz by setting the sampling frequency 10Hz. The each filtered waveform is learned and forecasted by the neural network. The neural network of the back propagation method is adopted in the learning the waveform. By inputting the data of 20 days in the past, the prediction of 10 days ahead is carried out. After learning the time series of each frequency band by the neural network, the predicted data far each frequency band are obtained. The predicted waveforms of each frequency band are synthesized to obtain a final forecast. The waveform can be forecasted well as a whole.

The robot soccer simulation game is a dynamic multi-agent environment. In this paper we suggest a new reinforcement learning approach to each agent's dynamic positioning in such dynamic environment. Reinforcement Beaming is the machine learning in which an agent learns from indirect, delayed reward an optimal policy to choose sequences of actions that produce the greatest cumulative reward. Therefore the reinforcement loaming is different from supervised teaming in the sense that there is no presentation of input-output pairs as training examples. Furthermore, model-free reinforcement loaming algorithms like Q-learning do not require defining or loaming any models of the surrounding environment. Nevertheless it can learn the optimal policy if the agent can visit every state-action pair infinitely. However, the biggest problem of monolithic reinforcement learning is that its straightforward applications do not successfully scale up to more complex environments due to the intractable large space of states. In order to address this problem, we suggest Adaptive Mediation-based Modular Q-Learning(AMMQL) as an improvement of the existing Modular Q-Learning(MQL). While simple modular Q-learning combines the results from each learning module in a fixed way, AMMQL combines them in a more flexible way by assigning different weight to each module according to its contribution to rewards. Therefore in addition to resolving the problem of large state space effectively, AMMQL can show higher adaptability to environmental changes than pure MQL. This paper introduces the concept of AMMQL and presents details of its application into dynamic positioning of robot soccer agents.

Many of past studies using physically based numerical climate models indicate that increases in atmospheric
$CO_2$ could enhance summer dryness over continental region in middle-high latitudes. However the models used in those studies do not take account of permafrost in high latitudes. We have carried out a set of experiments applying a version of global climate model that can reproduce realistic distribution of the permafrost. From the results, it is indicated that permafrost functions as a large reservoir in hydrologic cycle maintaining dry, hot summer over continents in northern middle-high latitudes, and that the$CO_2$ warming would reduce this function by causing climatological thawing of permafrost, which would result in moister and cooler summer, and warmer winter in the same region. The present study indicates that an inclusion of very simple description of soil freezing process can make a large difference in a model simulation. -
City gas is one of the most important necessities of daily city life and social infrastructures. City gas is delivered to every user through a pipeline network. The gas pressure in the pipeline is regulated by gas regulator. In the pressure control system, characteristics of gas pipeline is as important as characteristics of regulator. There are many reports about the transfer function model of the fluid pipeline. But suitable model about the gas transmission pipeline is not known. In this paper, as the transfer function model of the gas pipeline, new model considering the heat transfer between pipe wall and gas and temperature change of gas is proposed. To evaluate this model, frequency response tests are used. As the result, the proposed model shows a better agreement when compared with the experimental result than conventional models. The results show the effectiveness of the model.

Electric power market in Japan is now on the trend of deregulation and privatization just like in Europe and the United States. And various approaches for risk management have been investigated taking the electric power price fluctuation after the deregulation into account. The behavior of the investment in power generation plants has not, however, been studied in detail yet due to the complexity of the problem. The problem of the investment in the deregulated power market is that of autonomous decentralized decision-making system, which includes various kinds of decision-makers, that is, power producers called IPPS Each generator has its own criteria for plant investment. Therefore, the total behavior of the decentralized power market will be so complicated, and normative approach will not be applicable fur this analysis. We have developed a simulation-based system fur behavioral analysis and also the framework design of the decentralized power market.

Cosim (Hardware and Software Co-Simulator) is a JavaBeans-based simulation tool fur validating systems architecture and estimating performance of web applications. Cosim has four components: Modeler, Translator, Engine and Scenario. Users start from Modeler to describe systems architecture in UML(Unified Modeling Language) deployment diagram, and then specify hardware & software performance parameters such as execution delay, network topology, and frame size. All information specified on Modeler are sent to Translator, and then automatically converted to Java programs. Scenario is responsible to run the Java program and produce results in text reports and graphs. Developers can reduce development time and cost by validating systems architecture of web applications before the actual deployment.

In this study, we try to improve the accuracy of QN-GPH by the help of simulation approach. We first establish an estimation method for GPH distributions with sufficient accuracy based on empirical distribution, and then perform a brief trial run to find appropriate empirical distributions. After getting GPH form of distributions, we continue the QN-GPH analytic steps and compute necessary performance measures. We apply the method to find sojourn time distributions in a 8-node queueing system and compare the results with the whole simulation and the original two-parametric approximation.

The genetic algorithm that simulates the virus evolutionary theory has been developed applying to combinatorial optimization problems. The algorithm in this study uses only one individual and a population of viruses. The individual is attacked, inflected and improved by the viruses. The viruses are composed of flour genes (a pair of top gene and a pair of tail gene). If the individual is improved by the attacking, the inflection occurs. After the infection, the tail genes are mutated. If the same virus attacks several times and fails to inflect, the top genes of the virus are mutated. By this mutation, the individual can be improved effectively. In addition, the influence of the immunologic mechanism on evolution is simulated.

There is a big issue to generate 3D hexahedral finite element (FE) model, since a process to divide the whole domain into several simple-shaped sub-domains is required before generating a continuous mesh with mapped mesh generators. In general, it is nearly impossible to set up proper division numbers interactively to keep mesh connectivity between sub-domains on a complicated arbitrary-shaped domain. If mesh continuity between sub-domains is not required in an analysis, this complicated process can be omitted. Element-free Galerkin method (EFGM) can accept discontinuous meshes, which only requires nodal information. However it is difficult to choose a reasonable influenced domain in moving least squares scheme with non-uniformly distributed nodes in discontinuous FE models. A new FE scheme fur discontinuous mesh is proposed in this paper by applying improved EFGM with some modification to derive FE approximated function in discontinuous parts. Its validity is evaluated on linear elastic problems.

In considering the issue of safely during emergency building evacuations, it is important to be able to make accurate predictions about evacuation conditions and to be able to assess safety levels. Simulation techniques are often used to make predictions regarding evacuation conditions. The two main types of prediction models are crowd flow models and discrete models. We have developed an evacuation simulation system based on the discrete model which attempts to address the implementation problems of existing evacuation models. Our model incorporates characteristics such as evacuee profiles and spatial considerations, and is capable of dynamically predicting the behavior of individual evacuees. The simulation system is primarily designed for buildings in which many people are incapacitated and require helpers in order to evacuate, such as hospitals and facilities fur the elderly. We show the results that the evacuation simulation system was used to perform two trial simulations.

Thermopile thermometer can measure the temperature of an object without attaching the object. It measures the temperature by receiving the radiation energy from objects. The idea of this is from the law of Stefan-Boltzmann. In the past it was not used well because the size was big and the cost was too expensive. But, In these days it can be used many field because the size become smaller and advantage of cost by using micro machine technology. However, The accuracy of measuring is not better than electric type. So we want to improve the accuracy of sensor by analyzing the heat transfer of the thermopile. To analyze temperature distribution in the thermopile sensor, we use the FEM software which is named ANSYS. The conduction and radiation heat transfer is considered to simulate the temperature distribution and time response inside of the sensor. -
Model verification, validation and accreditation (VV&A) of system simulation are detailedly discussed in this paper. The necessity of VV&A is explained by analyzing the factors on which the model and the reality are discrepant. The W&A technology is expounded in detail not only in the conceptual aspect but also in the methodological aspect. Some principles, difficulties and problems that should be paid attention to are discussed concretely and reasonedly. The paper is expected to be instructional and helpful to the VV&A study.

CONCURRENT SIMULATION TECHNIQUE USING THE PROPORTIONAL RELATION FOR THRESHOLD-TYPE ADMISSION CONTROLIn various applications of queueing systems, admission control is often employed. It is known that the threshold-type of admission control is optimal in many practical applications despite its simplicity. However, determining the optimal threshold value is hard in general, because analytical expressions for the stationary queue length distributions are not easily available in most queueing systems. In this paper, to quickly determine the optimal threshold value under threshold-type admission control, we develop a concurrent simulation technique, which can save large amount of CPU time required in simulation, compared to the standard simulation procedure.

Many simulation models have been built to facilitate simulation technique in designing, evaluating, and optimizing supply chains. Simulation is preferred to deal with stochastic natures existing in the supply chain. Moreover simulation has a capability to find local optimum value within each component through entire supply chain. Most of supply chain simulation models have been developed on the basis of discrete-event simulation. Since supply chain systems are neither completely discrete nor continuous, the need of constructing a model with aspects of both discrete-event and continuous simulation is provoked, resulting in a combined discrete-continuous simulation. In this paper, an architecture of combined modeling for supply chain simulation is proposed, which includes the equation of continuous portion in supply chain and how these equations are used in the supply chain simulation models. A simple example of supply chain model dealing with the strategic level of supply chain presented in this paper shows the possibility and the prospect of this approach.

In this paper we introduce a general framework for the modeling, analysis and costing of logistic networks including supply chains (SCs). The employed modeling notation, the so-called Process Chain paradigm, is specifically developed for the application field of logistic networks which includes SCs. We view SCs as discrete event dynamic systems (DEDS) and apply corresponding simulative techniques in order to derive performance measures of the Process Chain model under investigation. For this purpose Process Chain models are automatically transformed into the input language of the simulation tool HIT. Subsequently, a cost accounting model using the performance measures is applied to obtain costs which are actually subject of interest. The usefulness and applicability of the approach is illustrated by a typical supply chain example. We investigate the impact of an additional SC channel between a manufacturer and web-consumers on the overall supply chain costs.

In many make-to-order production systems customers ask due date confirmed and kept. Unexpected urgent orders from valuable customers often requires short lead times, which causes existing orders in the production schedule to be delayed so that their confirmed due dates cannot be met. This Imposes significant uncertainty on the production schedule in a supply chain. In this paper, we propose a new concept of capacity reservation as a viable tool for due date promising and suggest its operational alternatives. Simulation results show that the reserved capacity scheme appears to outperform simple FCFS scheduling policy in terms of the number of valuable urgent orders accepted and total profit attained.

As inter-network traffics grows rapidly, the router systems as a network component becomes to be capable of not only wire-speed packet processing but also plentiful programmability for quality services. A network processor technology is widely used to achieve such capabilities in the high-end router. Although providing two such capabilities, the network processor can't support a deep packet processing at nominal wire-speed. Considering QoS may result in performance degradation of processing packet. In order to achieve foster processing, one chipset of network processor is occasionally not enough. Using more than one urges to consider a problem that is, for instance, an out-of-order delivery of packets. This problem can be serious in some applications such as voice over IP and video services, which assume that packets arrive in order. It is required to develop an effective packet processing mechanism leer using more than one network processors in parallel in one linecard unit of the router system. Simulation analysis is also needed for verifying the mechanism. We propose the packet processing mechanism consisting of more than two NPs in parallel. In this mechanism, we use a load-balancing algorithm that distributes the packet traffic load evenly and keeps the sequence, and then verify the algorithm with simulation analysis. As a simulation tool, we use DEVSim++, which is a DEVS formalism-based hierarchical discrete-event simulation environment developed by KAIST. In this paper, we are going to show not only applicability of the DEVS formalism to hardware modeling and simulation but also predictability of performance of the load balancer when implemented with FPGA.

There have been many accidents of passenger ships on the sea and they have caused a big loss of human lives. Maritime Safety Committee(MSC) of International Maritime Organization(IMO) made evacuation analysis of Ro-Ro passenger ships mandatory in order to save as many lives as possible at the time of accident. But this is a temporary regulation and HSC/IMO ties to introduce a performance-based regulation to improve the effect of regulation. Simulation-based evacuation analysis is the basis of performance-based regulation. In this paper, we performed a simulation-based evacuation analysis on a passenger ship, which is usually used in the plying between land and islands in Korea, with EXODUS system. Through inspecting the results from this analysis in more detail, we can make a proposal to improve the safety of passenger ship. Finally we describe the features of IMEX(Intelligent Model for Extrication Simulation), a new evacuation model being developed in KRISO.

A mobile agent is an autonomous software agent capable of moving from one computer to another while performing its tasks. We view the agent as a discrete event system in the view of its computation and communication. This paper presents a methodology far modeling and simulation of such a mobile agent system as a discrete event system. The methodology is based on the Mobile Discrete Event System Specification (MDEVS) formalism and the associated simulation environment AgentSim which are previously developed by the authors. Within the methodology an atomic model represents dynamics of a mobile agent; a coupled model is modeled as mobile agent servers for representation of structural changes between atomic agents. Being based on the object-oriented environment the modeling methodology exploits inheritance of basic classes AtomicModel and CoupledModel provided by AgentSim.

We model and simulate master-driven TDD wireless communication systems, e.g., Bluetooth systems. We model the Bluetooth system and use the BONeS simulation tool to conduct event-drivers simulations. In order to support more than seven slave devices in a piconet, a park mode is considered and modeled. We evaluate the performance, i.e., throughput and delay, using simulations when multi-connections (bath ACL and SCO connections) are present in a piconet. We show that the data rate of ACL connections may be less than 20 kbps when SCO connection(s) and more than six ACL connections are jointly supported in a piconet. In addition, if up to five ACL connections are supported, the average delay is shown to be maintained less than 20 msec. Our results can serve as a guideline to the design of master-driven TDD wireless communication systems with performance requirements.

A good arithmetic random number generator should possess full period, uniformity and independence, etc. To obtain the excellent random number generator, many researchers have found good parameters. Also an initial seed is the important factor in random number generator. But, there is no theoretical guideline for using the initial seeds. Therefore, random number generator is usually used with the arbitrary initial seed. Through the empirical tests, we show that the choice of the initial values for the seed is important to generate good random numbers.

The ROK TRANSCOM is trying to establish a concrete wartime sealift operation plan. But there are many problems to be solved for setting up the plan. The most serious problem is to procure war materiel to be shipped in U.S.A and next one is to determine the number of sealift assets and to allocate them. The process of sealift operation can be described as follows. Before the order of vessel mobilization, all vessels appointed for activation would be scattered in worldwide in the state of Beaded or unloaded. After the order of vessel mobilization, vessels would go to SPGE(seaport of embarkation) to load war materiel. Some loaded ships should offload the commercial cargo to the near port as soon as they are activated, before they would go to SPOE. All vessels would load procured materiel in SPOE and then go to SPOD(seaport of debarkation). They would offload war materiel in SPOD and then go back to SPOE to load war materiel again. We will simulate this process using ARENA(1), evaluate the sealift capability of ROK and find omit problems of the sealift plan. This model ultimately evaluates the sealift capability and provides planners with critical information far establishing and correcting the plan. This study can also provide military planners with a flexible and accessible decision support tool to provide advance planning under a variety of conditions on the sealift capability. The military planner is expected to make use of this model as a standard for establishing effective and concrete sealift operation in the near future. We can conclude how procurement capability significantly affects the result of sealift operation through this model. We could decide the appropriate levee of sealift asset such as the number of vessels and the number of available berth. So we could allocate effectively the resources for completing the sealift operation within the TGT(Target) time.

Optimum directivity synthesis of ultrasonic transducers in linear array is considered. To realize the desired directivity, a robust and efficient method is proposed which is the direct inversion combined with the iterative DFP (Davidon-Fletcher-Powell) method. A quasi-ideal beam with the beam width and the steering beam angle specified are chosen for the numerical demonstrations. The demonstration is then extended to the case of multi-beams. The proposed combination method shows quick convergence over the single LMS or DFP method at the expense of the system matrix inversion.

The sophistication of current software applications results in the increasing cost fur software development time. The component-based software development framework is proposed to overcome the difficulty and time-consuming requirements by modularity and reusability. As is the general software case, a component-based simulation framework encourages the reusability of the real system model based on the modularity of the applied simulation methodology. This paper presents a component-based simulation environment that is based on the DEVS/COM run-time infrastructure. The DEVS (Discrete Event System Specification) formalism provides a formal modeling and simulation framework for the generic dynamic systems [1] and Microsoft's COM (Component Object Model) is one of the strongest competitor fur the component standard. The reusability by the DEVS/COM simulation environment saves model development time remarkably and component technology make simulator itself to be a subparts of real application.
