In 1996, the Faculty of Engineering, Niigata University, Japan entered an era of open student-exchange with Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg, Germany. Thus far, more than 50 of our students have devoted anywhere from three months, to an entire year of their courses, to collaborative efforts with fellow students, (-and some cases, the local citizenry) -in their native environment experiencing unfamiliar education systems and cultures.

The Engineering school of Tohoku University has been offering a Team-based Engineering Design Course to its first year students since 1996 in order to increase the level of both motivation and interest in engineering. Freshmen are required to select one of approximately 150 topics and do some research on this topic. This course also provides opportunities for students to participate in exchange programs with the University of Washington (UW) and the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB). In the Tohoku-UW exchange program, which began in 1999, between 10 and 25 students of Tohoku visit the UW annually to present the results of the subjects the school has appointed in advance in the Team-based Engineering Design Course. In the Tohoku-USTB exchange program, which began in 2007, about 15 students from each university participate in a one day meeting organized by the students themselves. They give a presentation on either the results of the subject they selected in the course, or on an engineering related topic both groups have agreed to in advance. In this paper, a detailed history, the objectives, a schedule and the budget in these unique exchange programs is introduced together with an outline of the course and its contribution to the engineering design education.

The Regional Cooperative Development Center (RCDC) at Tokushima Bunri University was established in 2005. The role of the RCDC is to make a social contribution and to assist in the development of human resources. The RCDC has made contributions to society by organizing meetings to facilitate the exchange of technology, holding public lectures, supporting joint research projects, providing technical assistance for manufacturers, making available the free use of equipment owned by the university and so on. Additionally, the RCDC has put much effort into giving undergraduate students internship opportunities at industries in the eastern part of Kagawa Prefecture (the TOSAN area) in Japan. The RCDC also trained a contracted researcher from a small company about the creation of intellectual property, including how to conduct a patent prior art search, how to prepare a patent specification, etc. The RCDC has worked in partnership with industry, Sanuki City Society of Commerce and Industry and Higashi-Kagawa City Society of Commerce and Industry in order to revitalize local communities.

In this paper, the purpose and overview of the "Frontier Leadership Program for Engineering Students through Joint Participation of Higher Education and the Industrial Sector" (FLC: Frontier Leadership Course) in Gunma University is reported together with our achievements during the last three years. The purpose of this special educational program is to promote and educate selected students who are highly motivated to learn science & mathematics and to become an active leader in industrial sectors or research institutes. The activity can be divided into two categories: "Student-Proposed Stream" and "Advanced Research Stream". These activities were found to be useful to cultivate student's leadership and global communication ability. Furthermore, most of the FLC students cultivated the excellent academic performance and five students among them will be allowed to skip their fourth undergraduate year and enter directly into our graduate school.

Nowadays, fewer Japanese university students are taking PhD degrees in the U.S.A than Koreans or Taiwanese. The language barrier is considered as one of major reasons for this. This lack of international education is one of the reasons cited, as Japan has been falling behind in industrial globalization. Reading aloud is a good practice for learning a foreign language, since many areas of our brains are simultaneously activated. Furthermore, students have a chance to overcome the psychological barrier in reading aloud in front of others, in a meeting. The authors start the voluntary meeting (which is unrelated to official classes of the curriculum) by reading English articles aloud. Topics in the meeting are selected from articles on web sites, therefore, (1) textbooks were not needed, (2) voice data could be listened to, and (3) the meaning and the pronunciation of an unknown word could be checked by web tools. Once the methodology has been mastered, volunteer students can manage the meeting. The authors introduce our experiments conducted at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Ehime University.

This paper deals with the introduction of capstone design projects based on invention education in Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Korea Maritime University. This course is referred to as Creative Engineering Design for spring semester of 4th-year undergraduates. The course focuses on creative thinking and cooperative mind to students by learning engineering design skills, realizing their idea through design project and recognizing practicality of their systems. To improve creative thinking of students, intellectual property (IP) education is very helpful. If engineering students take training program in IP, it will be very beneficial for CEOs to manage intellectual capital in many industries and to ensure competition power in their business. This study suggested that students take interest in connecting their ideas with inventions through invention education reinforcing an invention and a patent exercise. It is expected that this study may help to develop new curriculum of capstone design project including IP education in many universities.

This study presents an analysis of the current situation (management, approach, adjustment, transportation, and others) of teaching portfolio by examining the teaching portfolio managers (staffs, researchers, teaching assistants, etc.) of 6 universities in the southeast of Korea. The rationale for the study focus is that the existing teaching portfolio either suffers a problem in the transportation, approach, adjustment and/or management or is likely to raise a problem in the future. In order to solve this problem, this study builds a web-based e-teaching portfolio. According to the analysis results, the engineering education system was established in all 6 universities (Ed- note that '6 universities' has already been specified as the study sample). The teaching portfolio was partially digitalized in this system, despite some problems of converting analog data into digital data, which induced difficulties in constructing the overall e-teaching portfolio. Therefore, this study focused on constructing an e-teaching portfolio without developing any additional system by using the existing system positively, and also on determining the appropriate components among the existing teaching portfolio components. Accordingly, in order to convert the analog data into the digital data required for this study, we used a digital camera as the conversion device and converted the teaching portfolio components into those appropriate for the e-teaching portfolio. Finally, we constructed an existing system appropriate for the e-teaching portfolio by using these devices and components.

Data mining and knowledge discovery techniques have shown to be effective in finding hidden underlying rules inside large database in an automated fashion. On the other hand, analyzing, assessing, and applying students' survey data are very important in science and engineering education because of various reasons such as quality improvement, engineering design process, innovative education, etc. Among those surveys, analyzing the students' views on science-technology-society can be helpful to engineering education. Because, although most researches on the philosophy of science have shown that science is one of the most difficult concepts to define precisely, it is still important to have an eye on science, pseudo-science, and scientific misconducts. In this paper, we report the experimental results of applying decision tree induction algorithms for analyzing the questionnaire results of high school students' views on science-technology-society (HS-VOSTS). Empirical results on various settings of decision tree induction on HS-VOSTS results from one South Korean university students indicate that decision tree induction algorithms can be successfully and effectively applied to automated knowledge discovery from students' survey data.

The purpose of this paper is to design and implement the user motion pattern control system for the simulated vehicle. After analyzing the user motion patterns in the system, the patterns are used to control the moving direction of the simulated vehicle such as forward, backward, turn right, turn left etc. The patterns in the system around are sent to the simulated vehicle in real time. In order to execute the suggested user motion pattern control system, the Kinect is used for executing the system. The Kinect recognizes the specified user motion patterns and it transmits the data to the user motion pattern control system. There are nine kinds of the user motion patterns in the system for controlling the simulated vehicle. In addition to this, some sensors are used to detect the condition of the simulated vehicle. GPS is also used to estimate the current location of the simulated vehicle and to obtain the driving information.

Modern manufacturing needs a great number of advanced engineers. China has the world's second largest equipment manufacturing and electronic information industry, and in 2020, the shortage of talented personnel in key industries will be more than 5 million in China. Universities and colleges are the main places to cultivate engineering talents. In this paper, we will introduce a multi-level engineering talents cultivating system we have applied in Dali University, China for more than 4 years. Under this training system, we have achieved some gratifying results.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of accreditation on curriculum in Korean engineering education. To analyze the curriculum, bulletins of three colleges accredited programs and three colleges non-accredited programs from 2002 to 2010 were compared. The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, the accreditation for engineering education has a considerable influence on curriculum by strengthening the concentration areas, setting general education directions to fit engineering needs, and reinforcing major and MSC(math, science and computer) subjects. Secondly, the accreditation for engineering education causes significant changes in the educational objectives and contents. Lastly, it has an indirect influence on the curricula of non-accredited programs, such as increasing the number of MSC credits and accepting engineering design courses. Thus, the process of curriculum improvement is revealed in more global standardized engineering curricula.

본 연구의 목적은 글로벌 공학교육을 위한 원격화상강의에서 학습자 상호작용 활동을 중심으로 만족도를 분석함으로써, 향후 원격화상강의의 효과적인 운영을 위한 시사점을 제공하는 것이다. 본 연구를 수행하기 위하여 S대학교 공과대학에서 운영한 화상강의에 참여하는 학습자들에게 설문조사와 면담을 실시하였다. 본 연구에서 학습자는 강의내용, 교수자와의 상호작용, 학습자들 간의 상호작용에 대해 어느 정도 상호작용하고 있는지에 관한 인식결과와 이에 관한 심층적인 학습자 의견결과가 분석되었다. 아울러, 학습자에게 실제적인 관심이슈를 강의내용에 반영해야 한다는 점, 수업단계에 따라 국외/국내 교수자와의 상호작용하는 방법을 설계해야 하는 점, 지역간 학습자들이 상호작용할 수 있는 방법을 개발해야 한다는 점이 주요 요구사항으로 도출되었다. 본 연구결과는 효과적인 원격화상강의 설계 및 운영을 위한 교수전략 및 온라인지원환경을 설계하는 데 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to develop an evaluation criteria for students' portfolios in an annual intramural contest. To accomplish the purpose, evaluation categories and their questions were developed after previous literature, ABEEK's evaluation guidelines, and eight Universities' evaluation forms were analyzed. Furthermore, experts' validity tests were completed by showing that the evaluation criteria form was validated with a mean score of 4.24. Also, the inter-rater reliability was turned out with a high score of .86. The interview results by evaluators of students' portfolios made the final version of evaluation criteria form include five evaluation criteria categories and their allotted score portions: overall organization(40), personal information(15), certificates and awards(5), curriculum(15), and extra-curriculum(15). The importance of overall organization was discussed from the perspectives of teachers as well as students.

본 연구는 로봇활용수업이 초등학생의 학습태도에 미치는 효과를 밝히려는 것이다. 연구 결과, 로봇활용수업을 실시한 후의 학습태도 점수는 실시 전에 비해 뚜렷한 향상을 보여, 수업에서 로봇을 활용하는 경우 학생들의 학습태도를 적극적으로 변화시킨다는 점을 확인하였다. 성별에 따른 학습태도 점수는 남학생이 여학생에 비해 유의미하게 높았으나, 그 차이는 미미한 것으로 나타났다. 또 교과별로 비교할 때 과학, 미술, 재량활동 과목에서 특히 더욱 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 첫째, 로봇활용수업이 실제적인 과제와 실천 중심의 교수 학습 환경을 바탕으로 과제에 대한 주인의식과 내적동기를 북돋우기 용이하다는 점과, 둘째, 로봇매체의 교육적 장점을 극대화하고 그에 따른 적절한 수업환경을 제공한 데서 연유한 것으로 판단된다.

The needs for enhancing creativity in engineering design education continue to increase. Recent studies about a learning environment and learning support tools provide some new possibilities. The education of creative thinking however must begin from the change of attitude of students to creativity. The experimental results and some lessons for modification of systematic engineering design methodology to creative were reported from the course 'engineering design'.

The purpose of this study is to infer how is the effect of a governmental funding project to graduate schools by taking an example of World Class University Project's potential impact on the change of world university rankings in an international university ranking survey. Systematic results show that WCU contributes to improving academic peer reviews for both individual and institutional standings and discipline-based rankings. The potential effect of improving world rankings of participating universities could be ascribed to relatively higher weight of the survey to international peer review and invitation of world class scholars to the participating universities, which is a core device of the project. This implies a need to affirmatively utilize WCU foreign scholars over the course of facilitating international academic networking. The results should also be taken into consideration by universities and the government when developing evaluation systems and restructuring the project.

The purpose of this study is to give the preliminary data and suggestion for introducing and spreading e-learning engineering education through analyzing learning behaviors, learning motivations, and satisfaction of e-learning engineering students. Especially, this comparative study analyzes each research domain according to majors and grades, thereby suggesting more specific and practical results. 2,745 students registered in 38 subjects of e-learning in 2 Universities were analyzed for this study. The study result shows that engineering students are attending around 2 e-learning subjects with a duration of about 30 minutes once a week. The main of learning motivation for e-learning was not easy test level and feasibility of acquiring credit but advantages of e-learning such as freedom of time and space, learning by repetition. The satisfaction scores of e-learning were lower compared to the aspects of system and contents Based on these results, first, an active spread of e-learning to engineering education is necessary because the demand from the engineering students is high enough and they have desirable learning behavior and learning motivation for it. Second, the characteristics of grades need to be taken into consideration on operation of e-learning. Third, a successful e-learning process needs more meticulous and active operation.
