Utsunomiya University started a 3-year project to develop an education program for postgraduate students to cultivate leadership spirits. The program is centered on a PBL in which each group of students is required to find an engineering or social problem themselves and start a project to solve the problem. Projects vary widely, from a straight product development to a summer program for children or local area development. Student groups are advised by senior engineers from industries. They give advice as to how a project should be managed and run, but will not give instructions. The PBL is compulsory for all students in the engineering master course students. The new education program also includes a series of lectures by engineers to show engineers' job, activities, and career in the industry. Internship programs are also provided, in which students will be given opportunities to actively apply their knowledge and skills to real engineering tasks offered by the industry. The students are expected to gain something more than just experiences.

Faculty of engineering, Niigata University has been executing start-up engineering education programs for the first-year students to educate his or her ability to solve engineering problems. They are divided into teams and tackle a task that they expect to easily accomplish. The expected results are hardly obtained. Then they try to seek the gap between the results and their knowledge. They analyze the phenomena and improve the approach. They evaluate the results of second trial and the effectiveness of the measures. That is, the project requires so-called PDCA cycles for students to solve engineering problems. The start-up engineering project is one of the compulsory subjects and seven departments have given the students several tasks based on their technicality. The students exchange their knowledge, ideas and learn how to use knowledge to solve the problems. Their reports and questionnaire survey proved that the projects are highly effective to improve his or her ability to solve engineering problems and give them strong motivation to learn engineering. We introduce the some tasks and the outcomes of the projects set by seven departments; mechanical and production engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, information engineering, biocybernetics, chemistry and chemical engineering, civil engineering and architecture, and material science and engineering.

Shu-gyo-ryoku, a program to enhance students' academic and career skills, was begun in the academic year 2011. Under the new program, "Career Planning" and "Career Design" were introduced as part of the liberal arts education for incoming freshmen. Approximately 500 students majoring in engineering enrolled in "Career Planning" in which they study a "curriculum map" and how it relates to their future fields of employment. The curriculum map illustrates the connections between classes and increases students'understanding of the curriculum structure. In small groups, students discussed the curriculum in order to develop sketches of their career paths. In addition, students answered a career anchor test and though several communicative activities, improved their communication skills. A portfolio system was built into the university network to record the learning history of each student. Students are able to check their learning histories and reflect on the change in themselves during their academic careers.

Robots have been attracting students' interest recently. Therefore, they are a good way to motivate to study related subjects. However, there are difficulties in teaching general students because a wide background is required to understand the fundamentals of robotics. In order to teach robotics fundamentals to beginners in a short period, an effective experimental class, including several phased experiments, is proposed in this paper. A portable two-DOF robot arm system with servo motors was developed for experiments, and the operation method based on kinematics was introduced for its operation. The effectiveness of the class was investigated by using a questionnaire after carrying it out in a university class for junior students.

"The engineering education program for environmental intention and value creation" has been executed from 2008 to 2010 in Suzuka National College of Technology, which program was promoted as "Good Practice for Education" by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Japan. "Eco-car project" is one of these practical ecology/environment education programs. The project's members have been learning and researching the environmental managements by the process of design, manufacturing, and assembly of solar car, highly effective fuel consumption car (Eco-run car), electric vehicle and fuel-cell car. Also this project was supported by some professional experts of the local industries and community. The students learned the actual industrial technique, the engineering management and the structure of local industries by this project. In this paper, the environmental intention engineering design education with local industry collaboration is introduced.

A new obligatory subject, Computer Programming IV, is organized in the Department of Informatics, Faculty of Engineering, Yamagata University. The purposes of the subject are as follows: (1) Attachment to each laboratory for bachelor thesis was usually at the initial stage of the student's fourth academic year. This subject actually moves up the attachment because students are tentatively attached to a laboratory for this subject. The interval to complete their bachelor thesis is extended by half a year. (2) In each laboratory, students cooperate with each other to complete their project. The project becomes capstone design which JABEE (Japan Accreditation Board for Engineering Education) is recently emphasizing. We not only explain the introduction of this subject, but also report some case studies.

Student members from The University of Tokushima worked voluntarily at the science school for elementary school children and high school students under the support of Japan Science and Technology Agency. The teaching classes for the science school were held in 2010 as follows: (1) Science handicraft class for children on "Wonder in light, sound, temperature and force", (2) Family Science School for children and parents on "Measurement of length, temperature, weight and energy", (3) "Tatara steel making" for high school students, (4) "Wave motion in strings" for high school students. This paper describes how the students prepared the teaching materials and what they obtained from the teaching activities.

Graduate Students in engineering at The University of Tokushima can take part in an educational program which is offered long-term internship opportunities (at a company or the government). Onishi, one of authors, took part in this educational program. She is studying environmental conservation at the university and is interested in environmental conservation activities led by residents. Striking a balance between environmental conservation and human economic activities is seen as important to society. However, the continuing in environmental conservation activities is difficult. Therefore, collaborative activities attract attention as a way of the continuing in environmental conservation activities. A person called "co-coordinator" is a key to make many people to participate in the sustainable collaboration activities. The main role of co-coordinator is connecting people who are interested in environmental conservation activities. The purpose of joining in environmental conservation activities is different from person to person depending on where they belong to or where they live. Onishi took part in the educational program to learn the techniques of adjusting the differing interests. She did her internship at environmental consulting company in Kamikatsu town, Tokushima prefecture. She participated in several environmental conservation activities and work experience as a coordinator. Through this experience, she learned not only the technique but also the difficulty of the work. This paper reports the results obtained from her experience.

Practical problem-solving studies in a company or organization have provided great advantages for our university and students. For example, such studies can lead them to build a stronger relationship with local governments and companies as well as develop their research through collaborative studies. On the other hand, comments from companies or organizations that accepted our students showed that they did not always have advantages. This study seeks ways to establish a sustainable long-term internship program that can offer advantages for companies. Advantages and disadvantages of the internship are written by the company on the evaluated sheet. These feedback comments are analyzed by text-mining approach. It is shown that there are three types of company and organizations depending on their reasons for accepting students. Next, suitable internship programs for each type, including their period and expense distribution are presented.

It is reported that the constructivistic learning method (CLM) enhances the understanding of the students in the learning process, especially in engineering classes. In CLM-based classes, the students can take the initiative in the learning process, which is called the student-centered model of the learning process. This is different from the traditional learning method based on the teacher-centered model, where a teacher plays the central role in the learning process of students. The authors have applied the method of CLM to one of the Engineering classes, namely production planning and inventory control (PPIC) class for undergraduate students. The PPIC class provides multimedia-based study materials and factory visits as well as regular lecture sections to cover the whole subject of inventory control theory and practice. In the review sessions, students are divided into several groups, and question-and-answer discussions were actively carried out among these groups under the support of the teacher as a facilitator. It was observed that the student engagement in the class was very active compared to the conventional lecture-based classes. As for further support of students understanding on the subject, simulation-based materials are also under study for the class. This paper presents the review of case study of CLM-based PPIC class and discusses the feasibility of simulation-based study materials for further improvement of the class.

This paper is about one practical case on applying interdisciplinary collaboration on the education of technical writing and presentation for the engineering students. There are many points for the collaboration on various stages. Points of collaboration from the literature faculty and engineering faculty are discussed. Also collaboration forms in each educational stage are discussed. Finally a practical case of applying the collaboration scheme are described based on a real class example.

Design factors such as design objects establishment, analysis, synthesis, production, test and evaluation should be educated in a systematic way. Also design ability to reflect practical restrictive conditions such as industrial standards, economic feasibility, environmental impact, aesthetics, safety and reliability, ethical impacts and social impacts should be cultivated. In this paper, we explain the meaning of these terms and propose a systematic engineering design education framework satisfying Korean engineering education accreditation criteria. We also present a simple implementation in information network engineering.

GNTECH-ICEE, which this study seeks to investigate and evaluate, demonstrates a new system of training innovative engineers. An essential component of this operation is a Small Engineering Group (SEG) that links professors, students and industrial experts together, to study and apply different techniques in determining the processes and products that relate industrial sectors needs. As an education program, SEG also provides a right direction for educating students, and generates industry-university link based human resources. Through these efforts, GNTECH-ICEE has effectively trained creative, professional, and practical engineers, by operating a variety of programs for meeting industrial needs and enhancing engineering education. SEG has many merits that have influenced its success so far, but the program also faces some challenges. The merits include; strong group bondage, practical ability incubation, and efficient administrative support. In terms of demerits, it is evident that sufficient theoretical education and local small-middle size enterprises (SMEs)' sustainable participation cannot be warranted. Thus, we propose that initiative strategies have been helpful to maximize GNTECH-ICEE's goal of making students into multi-player engineer, but continuously financial and administrative strategies be put into place in order to guarantee SMEs' long-term devotion to the program, and to help create a sustainable network between students and the companies involved.

This article presents the development and application of educational programs at Chungnam National University(CNU). College of engineering in CNU developed the engineering education program, CNU Engineering Fair, in 2009, and it is annually holding in September or October. The purposes of the fair are to show superiority of the college of engineering students of CNU, to strengthen the industry-university cooperation and to motivate students to lead their engineering interests. As a result of the fair, the opportunity to understand the college of engineering has been increased for students in the college of engineering as well as the public. As the development of human resources has been concerned, it gives us a chance for individual development and career development. Finally, the fair causes interests in engineering to high school students.

These days, the cruise tourist industry is one of the most dynamic and fastest growing components of the leisure industry in the world. Therefore, the cruise ship with ubiquitous technology is expected to enhance the operation efficiency of the ship. It can also provide valuable addition to the ship's service as well as high quality of life to crews and passengers. Since a large number of passengers are dwelling in cruise ship, all passengers are not easy to use ship's facilities, such as restaurants, fitness center, swimming pool and spa at anytime they want. In this paper, passenger service system in ship environment is tested in similar environment and under ship operation condition. We have proposed three applications of ubiquitous technology using Zigbee communication and LabView program.

Independent study is a major ability of engineering students. In independent study training practice, we need to use different instructional strategies and responds to individual student needs and learning styles. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate a four-step student independent study training mode we applied to teaching the Biomedical Engineering students in Dali University, China. We developed this teaching mode to fulfill the goals of the first years' undergraduates training and improve the students learning skills. The four-step teaching mode includes both in-class and out-of-class activities. The emphasis is on how to train students to get information from the reading materials, understand the concept, develop critical thinking and eventually become independent learner.

Most of ubiquitous computing devices such as stereo camera, ultrasonic sensor based MIT cricket system and other wireless sensor network devices are widely applied to the 2 Dimensional(2D) localization system in today. Because stereo camera cannot estimate the optimal location between moving node and beacon node in Wireless Personal Area Network(WPAN) under Non Line Of Sight(NLOS) environment, it is a great weakness point to the design of the 2D localization system in indoor environment. But the conventional 2D triangulation scheme that is adapted to the MIT cricket system cannot estimate the 3 Dimensional(3D) coordinate values for estimation of the optimal location of the moving node generally. Therefore, the 3D triangulation scheme based on the space segmentation in WPAN is suggested in this paper. The measuring data in the suggested scheme by computer simulation is compared with that of the geographic measuring data in the AutoCAD software system. The average error of coordinates values(x,y,z) of the moving node is calculated to 0.008m by the suggested scheme. From the results, it can be seen that the location correctness of the suggested scheme is very excellent for using the localization system in WPAN.

As the dropout rate of university students is gradually increasing, the studies on exploring the status, characteristics, reasons, and countermeasures of dropout of university students are currently grabbing high attention. This paper analyzes the relationship between the admission types and dropout of university students, mainly focused on engineering students. The analysis shows that the dropout rate of engineering students admitted through the scheduled-time admission procedures is quite higher than that of students admitted through non-scheduled-time admission procedures, the dropout rate of engineering students admitted from the vocational high schools is higher than that of students from the academic high schools, and the dropout rate of engineering students admitted from the liberal art high school tracks is higher than that of students from the natural science high school tracks. From the results, we could find out that student-support programs need to be carefully provided for the engineering university students according to their admission types and underlying backgrounds.

The purpose of this study was to provide analytic rubrics for measuring teamwork(PO6), communication and presentation skills(PO7), and life-long learning(PO8) based on theoretical concepts of performance assessment and rubrics. Also, this study analyzed data about performance assessment and rubics from courses offered through college of engineering. Participants were 34 senior engineering students who took the course 'Technical writing and presentation'. In the second week of the course, students were given the pre-test instrument which was developed for measuring students' understanding of program outcomes for this study. After performing project activities using rubrics, students were encouraged to complete the post-test instrument and the reaction questionnaire during the ninth week. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 14.0 and Microsoft Excel. The research findings are as follows. First, to promote and evaluate program learning outcomes appropriately, performance assessment-based on rubircs should be implemented. Second, in the reaction questionnaire about the rubircs, students answered that using rubircs for performing the project was very useful for understanding the performance procedures and assessment criteria. Third, the mean of understanding of program outcomes of students in post-test was significantly increased than in the pre-test(p<.0001). From the findings, performance assessment and rubrics should be used as evaluation tools at course levels in terms of promoting program learning outcomes for engineering education.

The influences of the basic academic skills to the scholastic achievement grades has been researched and we made a test of the basic academic skills(Korean language, mathematic, foreign language) to the students of engineering department in I college in Seoul and analyzed the correlation between the basic academic skills and the scholastic achievement grades. Results show that the scholastic achievement grades has a correlation(r=.456, p<0.01) to the average grade of the basic academic skill test. High level students of the scholastic achievement grades have a correlation(r=.292, p<0.01) to the mathematical department and the others have a correlation(r=.232, p<0.05 and r=.279, p<0.01) to the Korean linguistic department. The results of this study through multiple regression analysis indicate that the scholastic achievement has a relation on Korean language skill. As a result, It is recommendable that the mathematical basic academic skill programs are suggested to the high-level students of the scholastic achievement grades and the linguistic basic academic skill programs to the others. Also, the required basic linguistic subject is needed to the low-level students of the basic academic skills and in this paper, we propose the test and management system for the basic campus-life skills including the basic academic skills and the basic major skills.

This study proposes content and instruction of leadership education based on the results of evaluation and analysis of leadership skill of present levels of students who registered for 'leadership development and training' course which is liberal arts elective course of the 'Accreditation Board of Engineering Education in Korea' and provides best practices to develop leadership skill and to attain academic achievement 2, 4, 6, 7 of 12 academic achievement required by KEC2005. To accomplish a purpose of the study, I divide leadership skill into technical skill, human skill and conceptual skill that suggested by Katz and then measure students' leadership skill. The contents of leadership education to develop and enforce three leadership skills are as follows. First, for developing technical skill, there is a need for systematic education of basic working experience relevant to a major field of study. Second, for developing human skill, there is a need for education of leadership, motivation, conflict management, communication, group dynamics and presentation etc. Third, for developing conceptual skill, there is a need for education of founding vision, business strategy and creative idea etc.

This paper emphasizes writing education for engineering students should be communication driven writing education based on KEC2005. Communication driven writing for engineering students is essentially same as Technical Writing(TW) developed on the basis of ABET. Considering the current writing capability of engineering students and social need for various types of writing, TW education should be divided into two courses: basic and advanced. This paper deals with contents of a basic TW course in Myongji University, as a model case of a basic TW course for engineering students. It underlines various methods of prewriting that should be stressed and practiced in the TW class, because the prewriting step in the writing process determines the overall direction and structure of an essay. In particular, this paper introduces Power Writing(PW) which uses the structure of a paragraph as a means for providing building-blocks for the essay, employing logic, and ordering information arrangement in a paragraph. This paper also deals with important guidelines about sentence structure and word selection and proposes various applications of TW such as resume, interview, proposal, report, and presentation as a latter part of the basic course. Finally this paper highlights the etics of writing, such as plagiarism and the basic principles of quotation.

The purpose of this study was to compare and analysis researches related the promising career and job outlook and to provide the direction for job choice to engineering students. Literature review and expert council were used to achieve the objectives of study. The result of this study was analyzed that these jobs were promising, that is, environmental scientist and specialist, earth scientist and hydrologist(education and research related career), architecture and architectural engineer, civil engineer, landscape technician, land surveyor map production expert photo surveyor surveying technician(construction related career), material engineer (mechanics and material related career), mine and geology engineer(chemistry, fiber and environment related career), computer system design and analyst, system software engineer, application software engineer, web specialist, and computer support specialist (electrical and telecommunication related career) and food engineer(food related career). In addition, health silver specialist, bio biomedical engineer, renewable energy specialist etc. were promising by considering social and economic trend for demographic change like aging and green growth.
