  • For a nonnegative real matrix A of rank 1, A can be factored as $ab^t$ for some vectors a and b. The perimeter of A is the number of nonzero entries in both a and b. If B is a matrix of rank k, then B is the sum of k matrices of rank 1. The perimeter of B is the minimum of the sums of perimeters of k matrices of rank 1, where the minimum is taken over all possible rank-1 decompositions of B. In this paper, we obtain characterizations of the linear operators which preserve perimeters 2 and k for some $k\geq4$. That is, a linear operator T preserves perimeters 2 and $k(\geq4)$ if and only if it has the form T(A) = UAV or T(A) = $UA^tV$ with some invertible matrices U and V.

  • A Boolean rank one matrix can be factored as $\text{uv}^t$ for vectors u and v of appropriate orders. The perimeter of this Boolean rank one matrix is the number of nonzero entries in u plus the number of nonzero entries in v. A Boolean matrix of Boolean rank k is the sum of k Boolean rank one matrices, a rank one decomposition. The perimeter of a Boolean matrix A of Boolean rank k is the minimum over all Boolean rank one decompositions of A of the sums of perimeters of the Boolean rank one matrices. The arctic rank of a Boolean matrix is one half the perimeter. In this article we characterize the linear operators that preserve the symmetric arctic rank of symmetric Boolean matrices.

  • The m-isometry of a single operator in Agler and Stankus [3] was naturally generalized to the m-isometric tuple of several commuting operators by Gleason and Richter [22]. Some examples of m-isometric tuples including the recently much studied Arveson-Drury d-shift were given in [22]. We provide more examples of m-isometric tuples of operators by using sums of operators or products of operators or functions of operators. A class of m-isometric tuples of unilateral weighted shifts parametrized by polynomials are also constructed. The examples in Gleason and Richter [22] are then obtained by choosing some specific polynomials. This work extends partially results obtained in several recent papers on the m-isometry of a single operator.

  • In the last decades there have been frequent reports of oscillations of slender tension members under simultaneous action of rain and wind - characterized by large amplitudes and low frequencies. The members, e.g. cables of cable-stayed bridges, slightly inclined hangers of arch bridges or cables of guyed-masts, show a circular cross section and low damping. These rain-wind induced vibrations negatively affect the serviceability and the lifespan of the structures. The present article gives a short literature review, describes a mathematical approach for the simulation of rain-wind induced vibrations, sums up some examples to verify the calculated results and discusses measures to suppress the vibrations.

  • Previously T.Porter [3] has given a relative Chinese Remainder Theorem under the hypothesis that given ring R has at least one .tau.-closed maximal ideal (by his notation Ma $x_{\tau}$(R).neq..phi.). In this short paper we drop his overall hypothesis that Ma $x_{\tau}$(R).neq..phi. and give the proof and some related results with this Theorem. In this paper R will always denote a commutative ring with identity element and all modules will be unitary left R-modules unless otherwise specified. Let .tau. be a given hereditarty torsion theory for left R-module category R-Mod. The class of all .tau.-torsion left R-modules, dented by J is closed under homomorphic images, submodules, direct sums and extensions. And the class of all .tau.-torsionfree left R-modules, denoted by F, is closed under taking submodules, injective hulls, direct products, and isomorphic copies ([2], Proposition 1.7 and 1.10).

  • Let {$X_n$, $n{\geq}1$} be a sequence of asymptotically almost negatively associated random variables and $S_n=\sum^n_{i=1}X_i$. In the paper, we get the precise results of H$\acute{a}$jek-R$\acute{e}$nyi type inequalities for the partial sums of asymptotically almost negatively associated sequence, which generalize and improve the results of Theorem 2.4-Theorem 2.6 in Ko et al. ([4]). In addition, the large deviation of $S_n$ for sequence of asymptotically almost negatively associated random variables is studied. At last, the Marcinkiewicz type strong law of large numbers is given.

  • In this paper, we classify all solutions bounded from below to uniformly elliptic equations of second order in the form of Lu(x) = aij(x)Diju(x) + bi(x)Diu(x) + c(x)u(x) = f(x) or Lu(x) = Di(aij(x)Dju(x)) + bi(x)Diu(x) + c(x)u(x) = f(x) in unbounded cylinders. After establishing that the Aleksandrov maximum principle and boundary Harnack inequality hold for bounded solutions, we show that all solutions bounded from below are linear combinations of solutions, which are sums of two special solutions that exponential growth at one end and exponential decay at the another end, and a bounded solution that corresponds to the inhomogeneous term f of the equation.

  • We study a notion of q-frequent hypercyclicity of linear maps between the Banach algebras consisting of operators on a separable infinite dimensional Banach space. We derive a sufficient condition for a linear map to be q-frequently hypercyclic in the strong operator topology. Some properties are investigated regarding q-frequently hypercyclic subspaces as shown in [5], [6] and [7]. Finally, we study q-frequent hypercyclicity of tensor products and direct sums of operators.

  • The purpose of this article is to continue the study of q, 𝜔-special functions in the spirit of Wolfgang Hahn from the previous papers by Annaby et al. and Varma et al., with emphasis on q, 𝜔-Apostol Bernoulli and Euler polynomials, Ward-𝜔 numbers and multiple q, 𝜔power sums. Like before, the q, 𝜔-module for the alphabet of q, 𝜔-real numbers plays a crucial role, as well as the q, 𝜔-rational numbers and the Ward-𝜔 numbers. There are many more formulas of this type, and the deep symmetric structure of these formulas is described in detail.

  • For elucidating the key role of hidden neurons in information processing of Multilayer perceptrons(MLPs), we prove that the correlation coefficient between weighted sums to hidden neurons decreases under element-wise nonlinear transformations. This is verified through training of MLPs for an isolated word recognition problem. From this result, we can say that the element-wise nonlinear functions reduces redundancy in the information contents of hidden neurons.
