  • This study is related to reinforcement of the continuity between Nuri curriculum and elementary mathematics curriculum emphasized by 2015 revised national curriculum. Considering that teachers tend to rely much more on textbooks than on curriculum, we analyzed the continuity between math-related activities of Nuri manuals for teachers and the elementary mathematics textbooks and aimed to suggest several ways for securing the continuity based on the result of analyses. To do this, we compared and analyzed Nuri manuals (for ages three to five) for teachers and the first and second grade mathematics textbooks in three aspects: mathematical contents, mathematical terms and symbols, and mathematical processes. We adopted the same analysis framework including continuity, discontinuity and reverse continuity as the study on the continuity between Nuri curriculum and elementary mathematics curriculum. As a result, the results of analyses were revealed in three aspects, respectively. We also discussed the results and suggested some implications for securing the continuity of Nuri manuals for teachers and the elementary mathematics textbooks and for revising curriculum and its materials such as textbooks, workbooks or manuals for teachers.

  • This paper analyzed contents related to statistics in the 7th elementary mathematics curriculum in conjunction with main changes in the recent revised curriculum. This paper then provided detailed analyses of textbooks and workbooks in terms of main contents, instructional methods of graphs, and comprehension of graphs required to students in order to look closely at how such instructional materials would put the vision of the curriculum into action. It is expected that the issues and suggestions stemming from this analysis are informative in constructing new textbooks and workbooks.

  • In this study, we analyzed what STEAM-related subject contents, except mathematical knowledge, are contained in 2009 revised elementary first grade mathematics textbooks. STEAM-related subject contents in the textbooks were examined by unit and by strand of the content in the elementary school mathematics curriculum. According to the results, the number and the type of STEAM-related subject contents are different depending on the unit and the strand of the mathematics content. Generally speaking, in each unit and in each strand of mathematics, storytelling liberal arts-related contents are seen the most, followed by non-storytelling liberal arts-related contents and physical education contents in order, while the number of musical contents was very small. So we need to develop different STEAM materials in order to activate STEAM education in our elementary math classrooms.

  • In Korea where there is the national curriculum and teachers depend highly on textbooks, the school mathematics is based on curriculum and textbooks. Especially considering responsibility that textbooks should reflect the curriculum properly, it is necessary to analyze the connection of mathematics curriculum and textbooks in order to review and improve the quality of our mathematics education. This research analyzes the connection of curriculum and textbooks for 5~6 grades and aims to have some implications for revision of the textbooks when application of elementary mathematics textbooks based on the 2009 revised national curriculum is completed to all grades. Following the preceding research for 1~2 and 3~4 grades, this research sets 5~6 grades as a subject of analysis and has four contents of analysis; analysis of textbooks based on restructured achievement criteria, analysis of connections between unit objectives of textbooks and the reconstructed achievement criteria, analysis of textbooks related to mathematical terms and symbols, and analysis of textbooks related to mathematical process. The result of analysis has some implications to develop textbooks based on the 2015 revised national curriculum.

  • Increasing the problem solving power in school mathematics is the most important task of mathematics education. It is the ultimate goal of mathematics education to help students develop their thinking and creativity and help solve problems that arise in the real world. In this study, we investigated the contents of problem solving according to mathematics curriculum goals from the first curriculum to current curriculum in Korea. This study analyzed the problem-solving contents of the mathematics textbooks reflecting the achievement criteria of the revised curriculum in 2015. As a result, it was the first curriculum to use the terminology of problem solving in the mathematics goal of Korea's curriculum. Interest in problem solving was most actively pursued in the 6th and 7th curriculum and the 2006 revision curriculum. After that, it was neglected to be reflected in textbooks since the 2009 revision curriculum, We have identified the problems of this problem-solving instruction and suggested improvement direction.

  • In 2006 with the revised national curriculum, Elementary mathematics teaching and learning methods are presented in the following ways. Learners explore the way through the operational activities of the teachers and students with learning and learners' active learning activities, etc., and an active learning based on the principle of attention to learning how to maximize the effectiveness are required. In this study, from first grade through sixth grade elementary school mathematics textbooks for all learning activities presented in 10 different types were investigated This result of 5 contents area of number and operation, geometry, probability and statistics, measurement and patterns and problem solving and divided into low, middle, and hight three were intentional. In addition, teachers are looking forward to this result was compared with the type of activity.

  • Elementary textbook ${\ll}Mathematics\;4-2{\gg}$ first published in 2014 according to the 2009 elementary mathematics curriculum has been dealing with concave polygons which were not treated in elementary textbooks according to the previous curriculum. However, n the present paper, to show that there is a need to reconsider the handling of the concave polygons, after discussions about the polygon, problems in handling the concave polygons were discussed in next two viewpoints: Does 2009 elementary mathematics curriculum allow handling of the concave polygons? are there any logical leaps in handling of the concave polygon? And the following reasons to reconsider the handling of the concave polygons are presented as conclusions. First, there was no process of publicizing the handling of the concave polygon. Second, the evidences that will justify the handling of the concave polygon can not be found in 2009 elementary mathematics curriculum. Third, there are logical leaps in the handling of the concave polygons. Fourth, there is no consistency in handling the concave polygons.

  • The Korean national curriculum will be revised in 2015. Before revisions are to be made, we must discuss the direction the curriculum changes will take. In this study, we compare the contents of the current 2011 elementary school mathematics curriculum in Korea with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) in the United States. The results from this comparative analysis may be helpful in the revision of the Korean mathematical curriculum. We find that the CCSSM introduces certain mathematical concepts earlier and in greater detail than the Korean curriculum does. The CCSSM also covers a broader range of mathematical concepts. These results indicate that the Korean curriculum needs to emphasize conceptual understanding, as well as procedural skill and fluency, in the early grades. Moreover, the 'grade band' is unnecessary in the mathematics curriculum. The Korean curriculum revision process must be debated more intensely, must be made public, and must take into consideration the key points of CCSSM.

  • This paper analyzed the units of capacity and weight in the mathematics textbooks in terms of units, relationship between the units, and the need of standard units. The results of this study showed that there were differences in the representation of the units, the notation of units, the types of units, and the representation of basic amount of units in the mathematics textbooks developed by the 5th, 6th, 7th, 2007 revised, and 2009 revised national mathematics curriculum respectively. The mathematics textbook developed by the 2009 revised mathematics curriculum was found to be generally consistent with the International System of Units (SI). However, the way of defining 1kg through the weight of water was found to be different from the SI. The relationship between the units was consistently described only with a written sentence in the previous mathematics textbooks, but the 2009 revised mathematics textbook presents questions and pictures to foster students' understanding of the relationship. Finally, activities and questions are required for students to recognize the universality and convenience of the standard units through the inconvenience of arbitrary units. Based on these results, this paper provides implications for the development of mathematics textbooks in the units of capacity and weight.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate statistical units of elementary school mathematics textbooks upon on the statistical problem solving process to provide useful information for qualitative improvement of developing curriculum and teaching materials. This study analyzed the statistical units from the textbooks of 1st to 6th year along the 2009 revised national curriculum. The analysis frame is based on the 4 phases of the statistical problem solving process: formulate questions, plan and collect data, present and analyze data and interpret data.
