  • The mathematics curriculum reform has been carried out for almost five years (2004-2008) in the mainland China. But the teaching and learning in mathematics classrooms still are traditional in nature. Analyzing from the cultural angle, some reasons can be found: the orientation of teachers' role, teaching, and learning, the relationships between a teacher and the students, understanding the mathematics, and examination.

  • This study is focused on the possibility if we can use graphic calculators in teaching and learning school mathematics. This study is consisted with four main chapters. In chapter II, the functions of the graphic calculator EL-9600 produced by Sharp Corporation was analyzed focused on the possibilities if the functions could be used in teaching and learning school mathematics. Calculating of real numbers and complex numbers, solving equations and system of linear equations, calculating of matrices, graphing of several functions including polynomial functions, trigonometric functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, calculation of differential and integrals, arranging of statical data, graphing of statistical data, testing of statistical hypotheses, and other more useful functions were founded. In Chapter III, a mathematics textbook developed by Core-Plus Mathematics Project was analyzed focused on how a graphic calculator was used in teaching and learning mathematics, In the textbook, graphic calculator was used as a tool in understanding mathematical concepts and solving problems. Graphic calculator is not just a tool to do complex computations but a tool used in the processes of doing mathematics, In chapter IV, the 7th mathematics curriculum for korean secondary schools was analyzed to find the contents could be taught by using graphic calculators. Most of the domains, except geometric figure, were found that they could be taught by using graphic calculators, In chapter V, a model of a unit using graphic calculator in teaching 7th mathematics curriculum was developed. In this model, graphic calculator was used as a tool in the processes of understanding mathematical concepts and solving problems. This study suggests the possibilities that we can use graphic calculators effectively in teaching and learning mathematical concepts and problem solving for most domains of secondary school mathematics.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the teaching of statistical graphs according to elementary mathematics curriculum. To do this, we set up three research questions as follows. First, what is the change in achievement standards related to the teaching of statistical graphs in elementary mathematics curriculum? Second, what is the change in the teaching of the drawing of statistical graphs in elementary mathematics curriculum? Third, what is the change in the teaching of understanding of statistical graphs in elementary mathematics curriculum? For the first research question, we analyzed the achievement standards related to the teaching of the statistics of the 2015 revised curriculum from the first curriculum. For the second research question, we analyzed how to provide students with the opportunity to draw graphs(number of drawings) and whether to present the basic frame of the graphs(frame provided). For the third research question, we analyzed questions in the textbooks based on the graph understanding; 'reading data', 'finding the relation between data', 'interpreting data', 'understanding the situation'. As a result of the analysis, the achievement standard in the curriculum has changed in the direction of fostering statistical thinking, and it has been changed to emphasize the interpretation of the graph so as to make the graph drawing easy. However, 'interpreting data' and 'understanding the situation' were still lacking.

  • After National Mathematics Education Advanced Plan represented in 2012, mathematics education fields began to attention to 'Storytelling'. Because the plan contains important topics, reinforcing mathematics education, improving understanding about mathematics, and enhancing self-guided learning. As one of the methods for improving understanding about mathematics, Storytelling in mathematics is emphasizing recently. The purpose of this study is to analyse the articles about 'Storytelling Mathematics' to find how the media report it. Also, we discuss the direction of Storytelling in mathematics education. The conclusion of this study is that most of the privately-owned company is using the Storytelling as a tool for advertising commercially. Readers have to make a decision which articles are true or useful. A policy makers must ponder how the 'Storytelling Mathematics' policy affect the demands and suppliers in education.

  • The purpose of this study is to probe into student teachers' understanding of mathematics content knowledge and to identify the features of knowledge which is required to be emphasized in the elementary teacher education. For this, student teachers attending teacher preparation courses in Korea and Hong Kong were interviewed on tasks encompassing the 'what', 'why' and 'how' aspects of elementary mathematics. It was found that for the student teachers in the sample, their understanding of the concepts behind elementary mathematical topics was not very thorough. They were unable to retrieve the advanced mathematics that they learned in their advanced mathematics courses. It is suggested that for student teachers in mathematics, it is essential that the advanced mathematics they learn be explicitly related to the elementary mathematics they have learned in school.

  • The study focuses on what to consider and do for the improvement of math education of Korean Universities by comparing freshmen and seniors of department of math education in their beliefs in mathematics and math. education. The major comparing topics in the beliefs are composed of perception of mathematics as a science, learning methods of mathematics, teaching methods of mathematics, and roles and qualifications of math. teachers. The results of the study show that junior students tend to be more positive in their beliefs, especially in math education area than that of mathematics, compared to the freshmen. It implies that how important the role of topics covered in math education during college years is for changing the future teachers' beliefs in math and math education more positively. The supposed influencing contents of the curriculum of math. education are composed of learning reflection method based on problem-based learning, understanding mathematics as originated from the real world, mathematical pedagogy, text analysis, practice in classroom, and understanding various concepts in math. education area.

  • The study aimed at determining the identity of mathematics essay test in the university entrance examination. For this purpose, a document research was conducted for higher order thinking and mathematics essay ability and it analyzed the goal of assessment and the tendency of problem settings and looked into mathematics essay problems of twenty-five universities. As a result, the study found out that evaluation factors of mathematics essay test requires higher order thinking ability including mathematical knowledge and essay ability such as mathematical knowledge, understanding, problem solving, logical and critical thinking, creative ability, power of expression, argument skills. Also, problems from previous mathematics essay tests were set mainly to assess mathematical knowledge, understanding and problem solving. Based on the findings, the past mathematics essay tests in university entrance examination in Korea that require logical and critical thinking, creative ability, power of expression, argument skills were a rather small percentage of questions.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand Preservice elementary teachers' knowledge about multiplication of fractions by focusing on their computation abilities, understanding of meanings, generating appropriate problem contexts and representations. A total of 115 preservice elementary teachers participated in the present study. The results of this study indicated that most of preservice elementary teachers have little difficulty in computing multiplication of fractions for right answers, but they have big difficulty in understanding meanings and generating appropriate problem contexts for multiplication of fractions when the multiplier is not an integer, called 'multiplier effect.' Likewise, the rate of appropriate representations surprisingly decreased for multiplication of fractions when the multiplier is not an integer. The findings also point out that an ability to make problem contexts is highly correlated with representations and meanings. This study implies that teacher education programs need to improve preservice elementary teachers' profound understanding of elementary mathematics in order to fundamentally improve the quality of teaching practices in classrooms.
