In this paper, we study the symmetry of figures in elementary geometry. First, we investigate the historical and mathematical background of symmetry of figures and we explore the suitable teaching and learning methods for symmetry in elementary geometry. Also we study the major problem of geometry education that occurring in elementary school.
The college liberal arts mathematics is opened as a required course in science and engineering field, but students with low achievement experience difficulty in learning. Therefore, flip learning, which is well known as an effective teaching method based on self-led and learner, is suggested as an alternative. However, some problems are pointed out in this pedagogy. As an alternative to flip learning, we apply flip PBL classes that apply PBL to flip learning to general math subjects to supplement the problems of existing flip learning classes and increase interest in mathematics I want to know the effectiveness of whether it can be done. In this study, we investigated the educational effectiveness of the comparison study between the experimental group applying flip PBL class and the control group applying the existing flip learning class. First, the experimental group showed higher than the control group by 22 points Second, in the reflection journal analysis, in contrast to the control group, there was a positive effect on the improvement of the interest of the mathematics in the experimental group, It is expected that it will be applied as a teaching method that can complement the learning.
As the limitations of professional development programs and individual attempts to improve teaching expertise have been reported, mathematics teachers have operated various types of teacher learning communities as alternative teacher professional programs. A teacher learning community can be considered a Community of Practice(CoP) in that it satisfies three factors of Cop, which are common purpose, mutual participation, and shared repertoire, so the 'learning' of a teacher community can be interpreted based on the theory of CoP. The purpose of this study is to investigate the process of identity development of five mathematics teachers who have been continuously involved in teacher communities. For this, the researcher collected data on the entire process of community activities through participant observation and conducted individual follow-up interviews to explore mathematics teachers' narratives and personal experiences. Results indicated that mathematics teachers experienced the development of practical knowledge related to mathematics teaching and learning, improvement of teaching practice through continuous reflection and introspection, and recognization the shared value of togethering through community immersion. Based on these experiences, implications for the effective operation of learning communities such as national support of teacher learning communities and horizontal and cooperative teacher norms were discussed, and follow-up research was proposed.
The study focuses on what to consider and do for the improvement of math education of Korean Universities by comparing freshmen and seniors of department of math education in their beliefs in mathematics and math. education. The major comparing topics in the beliefs are composed of perception of mathematics as a science, learning methods of mathematics, teaching methods of mathematics, and roles and qualifications of math. teachers. The results of the study show that junior students tend to be more positive in their beliefs, especially in math education area than that of mathematics, compared to the freshmen. It implies that how important the role of topics covered in math education during college years is for changing the future teachers' beliefs in math and math education more positively. The supposed influencing contents of the curriculum of math. education are composed of learning reflection method based on problem-based learning, understanding mathematics as originated from the real world, mathematical pedagogy, text analysis, practice in classroom, and understanding various concepts in math. education area.
This paper analyzed <7-나> and <8-나> textbooks and teacher instruction activities in classrooms, focusing on procedures used to solve construction problems. The analysis of the teachers' instruction and organization of the construction unit in <7-나> textbooks showed that the majority of the textbooks focused on the second step, i.e., the constructive step. Of the four steps for solving construction problems, teachers placed the most emphasis on the constructive order. The result of the analysis of <8-나> textbooks showed that a large number of textbooks explained the meaning of theorems that were to be proved, and that teachers demonstrated new terms by using a paper-folding activities, but there were no textbooks that tried to prove theorems through the process of construction. Here are two alternative suggestions for teaching strategies related to the construction step, a crucial means of connecting intuitive geometry with formal geometry. First, it is necessary to teach the four steps for solving construction problems in a practical manner and to divide instruction time evenly among the <7-나> textbooks' construction units. The four steps are analysis, construction, verification, and reflection. Second, it is necessary to understand the nature of geometrical figures involved before proving the problems and introducing the construction part as a tool for conjecture upon theorems used in <8-나> textbooks' demonstrative geometry units.
Education researchers have been continuously interested in the teacher's ability to design lessons and conducted various studies in order to improve the teacher's professionalism in determining the quality of school instruction. So, this study explored the change of instructional design through the lesson reflection of pre-service mathematics teachers who participated in practicum settings. As a result, in the lesson plan prepared by pre-service mathematics teachers, the motivation to induce learning in the introduction stage, to present the learning contents in the development stage, and to reconstruct the formative evaluation of the closing stage was the highest rate. And the categories of the reconstructed contents appeared intensively in terms of curriculum contents and teaching and learning methods. This result can be attributed to the lack of experience in designing and performing lessons by pre-service mathematics teachers, so it suggests that the opportunity to design and conduct classes that take into account the practical aspects of education should be provided in the preparation process for pre-service mathematics teachers.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the strengths and weaknesses resulting from a study of elementary mathematics lessons among in-service teachers and to discuss implications for the direction of improvement of the study on elementary mathematics lessons based on teacher learning community. The results of this study showed that the study on elementary mathematics lessons based on teacher learning community improved teacher knowledge related to teaching mathematics, enhanced teacher's accomplishment and self-esteem, made it possible for participant teachers to teach one another, created atmosphere in which teachers investigated instruction via sustainable and systematic lesson study. However, some limitations were noticed such as regulations by the social norms of the teacher learning community, the influence of an expert teacher, teachers' unprofessional decision making, and lack of systematic evaluation and reflection on lessons. Based on these results, this paper closes with critical implications to enhance teacher learning community.
In this study, we investigated a good way for teacher professional development. Based on this way, we designed teacher training program. We carried out teacher training program for 50 secondary school mathematics teachers in July 2014. In this teacher training courses, teachers conducted recording mathematics teaching-learning processes by dialogue between teacher and student according to Socratic method. We also shared the practices of teacher educators, teachers and colleagues. In this teacher training, we tried to cultivate teachers' abilities needed to a good mathematics instruction. And we aimed to equip the attitude that guided reflection on their mathematics class. Through the teacher training, teachers recognized the need to study on the thinking of students and take into account students' expected reaction on the part of learners. Also they developed an attitude as reflective practitioners and recognized the need of teacher learning communities for their professional development.
This study was conducted to attain an in-depth understanding of students' mathematical representations and to present the educational implications for teaching them. Twelve mathematical tasks were developed according to the six types of problems. A task performance was executed to 151 third graders from four classes in DaeJeon and GyeongGi. We analyzed the types and forms of representations generated by them. Then, qualitative case studies were conducted on two small-groups of five from two classes in GyeongGi. We analyzed how individuals' representations became elaborated into group representation and what patterns emerged during the collaborative small-group learning. From the results, most students used more than one representation in solving a problem, but they were not fluent enough to link them to successful problem solving or to transfer correctly among them. Students refined their representations into more meaningful group representation through peer interaction, self-reflection, etc.. Teachers need to give students opportunities to think through, and choose from, various representations in problem solving. We also need the in-depth understanding and great insights into students' representations for teaching.
According to the degree of teacher's understanding for the curriculum, There are a lot of differences in teaching-learning methods and assessment items are one of the representative products reflecting these differences. Therefore we need to investigate how the understanding degree of the teacher for curriculum is reflected in the paper-based assessment items through analyzing them. In this study, we analyzed midterm and final 219 exam papers of 'Calculus I' which was based on the 2009 revised mathematics curriculum and focused on items of 'the Limit of Sequences' which content area is among total 4,632 questions. We investigated how the changed curriculum is reflected in the high school evaluation. Based on the results of the analysis, we confirmed the problems derived from the paper-based assessment. Through this, we sought to draw implications for the educational policy that should be accompanied necessarily in order to stabilize the new curriculum after the revision of the curriculum.
