To increase the tolerance for passive fiber alignment, a single mode polymer waveguide with a large core structure is demonstrated. The large core waveguide is designed to have a mode profile comparable to that of a thermally expanded core (TEC) fiber, and it can be connected to a high-contrast waveguide through an adiabatic transition taper structure. From a waveguide with a rectangular core of 25 ${\times}$ 25 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$$^2$, a single mode propagation is observed when the index contrast is as low as 0.0005. A UV-cured injection molding method is used to fabricate the thick core structure. Due to the large mode size, the insertion loss of the device is below 0.5 dB until the lateral displacement of the TEC fiber is 4.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The low insertion loss is important for reproducible passive alignment.
A novel high birefringent polymer terahertz (THz) fiber with a suspended elliptical core is proposed in this paper. The introduction of an elliptical core can enhance asymmetry to realize high mode birefringence, and a large porous outer cladding effectively isolates the core-guided mode from interacting with the surrounding environment. A full-vector finite element method(FEM) is used to analyze the characteristics of the THz fiber. Simulation results show that the suspended elliptical fiber exhibits high mode birefringence on a level of $10^{-2}$ over a wide frequency range, and an extremely large mode birefringence(${\approx}0.06226$) is obtained when ellipticity is 0.2. Moreover, a suspended hollow elliptical core fiber is also discussed for the purpose of lower loss, however high mode birefringence and low relative absorption loss can not coexist in such a kind of fiber.
By incorporating large core polymer waveguides, which have been developed for increased alignment tolerance in passive fiber attachment, highly efficient variable optical attenuators are proposed. In order to find optimum device structures, 3-dimensional beam propagation method (BPM) simulations are performed. Heat distribution over the polymer film is calculated to find the 3-dimensional index profile data for the BPM simulation. Due to the small index contrast between the core and cladding materials in the large core waveguide, heat-induced radiation occurs for small heating power. While the ordinary VOA needs the temperature to change over $150^{\circ}C$ for 20 dB attenuation, the large core VOA requires only $70^{\circ}C$. In addition to the merit of passive fiber attachment, the proposed VOA has enhanced attenuation efficiency for the lower temperature change.

We propose and fabricate an 1${\times}$2 asymmetric optical switch by TOE using SOI wafer based on silicon which has very large TOE figure and it is a good material for optical devices. SOI wafer consists of 3 layers; upper Si layer for device(waveguide;core, n=3.5), buried oxide layer for insulator(clad, n=1.5) and Si substrate layer. We designed 1${\times}$2 asymmetric y-branched single mode optical waveguide switch by BPM simulation and metal heater by heat transfer simulation. Fabricated switch shows about 3.5 watts of power consumption and over 20dB of crosstalk between output channels.
In this paper we have investigated the guiding properties of photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with a square-lattice of air-holes in the cladding. We have shown numerical results of PCFs with various air hole sizes and hole-to-hole spacings over a wide wavelength range. The group velocity dispersion, effective area and effective refractive index of PCF have been calculated numerically. The waveguide dispersion has greatly affected the group velocity dispersion when hole-to-hole spacing is about $1{\mu}m$. The effective area is quite flat over the wide spectral range whether the hole-to-hole spacing is large or ratio of diameter to pitch is large. From the field distribution, we found that the field is tightly confined within the core region of PCF when the pitch is $3{\mu}m$ and the air-filling fraction is 0.9.

Transmission spectra are measured from waveguide-coupled ring resonators fabricated with SiNx on SiO2. By using ring resonators with various radii and several index contrasts, the behavior of the quality factors is investigated. As the index contrast decreases, the dominant loss is from scattering for a large resonator, while that changes from scattering loss to bending loss for a small resonator. We verify that the quality factor can be drastically improved by reducing the index contrast in large ring resonators.

As optical communication is being substituted for telecommunication, the demand of a large variety of fiber optic components is increasing. V-groove substrates, one of the module components, are used to connect optical fibers to optical planar circuits and to arrange fibers. Their applications are multi-channel optical connectors and optical waveguide fiber coupling, etc. Because these substrates are a critical part of the splitter in a multiplexer and a multi fiber connector, precise and reliable fabrication process is required. For precisely aligning core pitch between fibers, machined core pitch tolerance should be within sub-microns. Therefore, these are generally produced by state-of-the-art micro-fabrication like MEMS. However, most of the process equipment is very expensive. It is also difficult to change the process line for custom designs to meet specific requirements using various materials. For various design specifications such as different values of the V angle and low-priced process, the fabrication method should be flexible and low cost. To achieve this goal, we have suggested a miniaturized machine tool with high accuracy positioning system. Through this study, it is shown that this cutting process can be applied to produce V-groove subtracts. We also show the possibility of using a miniaturized machining system for producing small parts.
A tunable optical delay line is designed, fabricated, and characterized. The tunable delay line consists of four polymer-ring add/drop filters with delay waveguides between adjacent ones. The polymer waveguide is a buried structure, designed to be square with core width and height of $1.8{\mu}m$. The refractive indices of the core and cladding polymer are 1.48 and 1.37 respectively. The large index difference and small cross section of the waveguide enable us to realize a compact device using a small radius of curvature. Four pairs of electrodes are evaporated above the add/drop filters to provide heating currents for thermal tuning. In measurements we can identify variable time delays of 110, 225, and 330 ps in proportion to the number of delay lines.
Physical modeling has been widely used for sound synthesis since it synthesizes high quality sound which is similar to real-sound for musical instruments. However, physical modeling requires a lot of parameters to synthesize a large number of sounds simultaneously for the musical instrument, preventing its real-time processing. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a single instruction, multiple data (SIMD) based multi-core processor that supports real-time processing of sound synthesis of gayageum which is a representative Korean traditional musical instrument. The proposed SIMD-base multi-core processor consists of 12 processing elements (PE) to control 12 strings of gayageum in which each PE supports modeling of the corresponding string. The proposed SIMD-based multi-core processor can generate synthesized sounds of 12 strings simultaneously after receiving excitation signals and parameters of each string as an input. Experimental results using a sampling reate 44.1 kHz and 16 bits quantization show that synthesis sound using the proposed multi-core processor was very similar to the original sound. In addition, the proposed multi-core processor outperforms commercial processors(TI's TMS320C6416, ARM926EJ-S, ARM1020E) in terms of execution time ($5.6{\sim}11.4{\times}$ better) and energy efficiency (about $553{\sim}1,424{\times}$ better).
