  • The effect of roughness is a change in the velocity and turbulence distributions near the surface. Turbulence models with surface roughness effect are applied to the fully developed flow in a two-dimensional, rough wall channel. Modified wall function model, low-Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ model, and k-$\omega$ model are selected for comparison. In order to make a fair comparison, the calculation results are compared with the experimental data. The modified wall function model and the low-Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ model require further refinement, while the k-$\omega$ model of Wilcox performs remarkably well over a wide range of roughness values.

  • A computational study on unsteady compressible flows has been performed by adopting a low Reynolds number $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model in conjunction with dual time stepping scheme. An explicit four-stage Runge-Kutta scheme for the Navier-Stokes equations and an approximate factorization scheme for the $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model equations are used. Computational results obtained for blade surface pressure distributions in the process of rotor-stator interaction in a turbine stage are in good agreement with extant experimental data. The effects of the wake from the stator on the boundary-layer transition over the rotor blade surface are discussed by showing that high intensity turbulence of the stator wake induces an early transition.

  • Modeling an equilibrium atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) in an empty computational domain has routinely been performed with the k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. However, the research objects of structural wind engineering are bluff bodies, and the SST k-${\omega}$ turbulence model is more widely used in the numerical simulation of flow around bluff bodies than the k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. Therefore, to simulate an equilibrium ABL based on the SST k-${\omega}$ turbulence model, the inlet profiles of the mean wind speed U, turbulence kinetic energy k, and specific dissipation rate ${\omega}$ are proposed, and the source terms for the U, k and ${\omega}$ are derived by satisfying their corresponding transport equations. Based on the proposed inlet profiles, numerical comparative studies with and without considering the source terms are carried out in an empty computational domain, and an actual numerical simulation with a trapezoidal hill is further conducted. It shows that when the source terms are considered, the profiles of U, k and ${\omega}$ are all maintained well along the empty computational domain and the accuracy of the actual numerical simulation is greatly improved. The present study could provide a new methodology for modeling the equilibrium ABL problem and for further CFD simulations with practical value.

  • A numerical study on two-dimensional unsteady transonic cascade flow has been performed by adopting dual time stepping and the k-.omega. turbulence model. An explicit 4 stage Runge-Kutta scheme for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations and an implicit Gauss-Seidel iteration scheme for the k-.omega. turbulence model are proposed for fictitious time stepping. This mixed time stepping scheme ensures the stability of numerical computation and exhibits a good convergence property with less computation time. Typical steady-state convergence accelerating schemes such as local time stepping, residual smoothing and multigrid combined with dual time stepping shows good convergence properties. Numerical results are presented for unsteady laminar flow past a cylinder and turbulent shock buffeting problem for bicircular arc cascade flow is discussed.

  • Numerical simulations of 3D aircraft configurations are performed in order to understand the effects of turbulence models on the prediction of aircraft's aerodynamic characteristics. An in-house CFD code that solves 3D RANS equations and two-equation turbulence model equations are used. The code applies Roe's approximated Riemann solver and an AF-ADI scheme. Van Leer's MUSCL extrapolation with van Albada's limiter is also adopted. Various versions of Menter's $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence models as well as Coakley's $q-{\omega}$ model are incorporated into the CFD code. Menter's $k-{\omega}$ SST models include the standard model, the 2003 model, the model incorporating the vorticity source term, and the model containing controlled decay. Turbulent flows over a wing are simulated in order to validate the turbulence models contained in the CFD code. The results from these simulations are then compared with computational results from the $3^{rd}$ AIAA CFD Drag Prediction Workshop. Numerical simulations of the DLR-F6 wing-body and wing-body-nacelle-pylon configurations are conducted and compared with computational results of the $2^{nd}$ AIAA CFD Drag Prediction Workshop. Aerodynamic characteristics as well as flow features are scrutinized with respect to the turbulence models. The results obtained from each simulation incorporating Menter's $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model variations are compared with one another.

  • Numerical simulation of flow past two-dimensional hill and valley is presented. Application of three turbulence models - the standard and modified (Kato-Launder) $k-{\varepsilon}$ models and standard $k-{\omega}$ model - is discussed. The computational methodology is briefly described. The mean velocity and turbulence intensity profiles, obtained from numerical simulations of flow past the hill, are compared with the experimental data acquired in a boundary-layer wind tunnel at Colorado State University. The mean velocity, turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress profiles from numerical simulations of flow past the valley are compared with published experimental data. Overall, the results of simulations employing the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model were found to be in a better agreement with the experimental data than those obtained using the modified $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and the $k-{\omega}$ model.

  • Numerical calculation is applied to centrifugal pump at design condition by using commercial code STAR-CD and Tascflow, and these results are compared with experimental data at impeller outlet. Numerical analysis is also performed by changing turbulence model and discretization scheme at design condition using Tascflow. Turbulence model and discretization scheme used to Tascflow are k-$\epsilon$, k-$\omega$ turbulence model and upwind, modified linear profile scheme. W;th the same turbulence model and discretization scheme, two results of STAR-CD and Tascflow are very similar. But there is significant difference in numerical results near hub and shroud of impeller with different kinds of turbulent model and discretization scheme at design condition. And with k- $\omega$ turbulence model and modified linear profile scheme, it is showed that numerical results are very similar to experimental results of impeller outlet

  • A numerical analysis of shock wave/boundary layer interaction in transonic/supersonic axial flow compressor cascade has been performed by using a characteristics upwind Navier-Stokes method with various turbulence models. Two equation turbulence models were applied to transonic/supersonic flows over a NACA 0012 airfoil. The results are superion to those from an algebraic turbulence model. High order TVD schemes predicted shock wave/boundary layer interactions reasonably well. However, the prediction of SWBLI depends more on turbulence models than high order schemes. In a supersonic axial flow cascade at M=1.59 and exit/inlet static pressure ratio of 2.21, k-$\omega$ and Shear Stress Transport (SST) models were numerically stables. However, the k-$\omega$ model predicted thicker shock waves in the flow passage. Losses due to shock/shock and shock/boundary layer interactions in transonic/supersonic compressor flowfields can be higher losses than viscous losses due to flow separation and viscous dissipation.
