  • In this paper, we study the effects on mathematical communication and disposition for the writing mathematics letters in secondary mathematics education. For this purpose we construct a experimental class and then analyse the students' change in those aspects after applying writing mathematics letters made some significant changes on the students communication in mathematics and disposition. First. the results for this purpose on regarding the enhancement of mathematical communication are effective. Second, the results on regarding the improvement of disposition are effective.

Effects of communication in learning middle grade school Mathematics (중학생을 대상으로 한 수학적 의사소통의 지도 효과에 관한 연구)

  • This study investigated the effect of teaching mathematical communication in mathematics learning. Cooperative learning, mathematics pin pals, and writing a mathematics diary were used to teach how to communicate mathematically. The experimental group was assigned to cooperate in class, to write a mathematics diary at the end of each class, and to exchange the mathematics pen pals once a week. The control group was taught by the traditional teaching method. The results were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The learning achievement between the two groups was performed with pretests and posttests. And after this study, mathematics pen pals, video protocol and open-ended test were analyzed. The results of this study are the following: 1. There were little differences in learning achievement test between the group taught through communication and those not. And there were little differences in the results of achievement test between the two groups-high and low level classes.2. Cooperative learning, writing a mathematics diary and mathematics pen pals were effective as methods of teaching communication mathematically. The analysis of mathematics pen pals which is to investigate student's writing abilities showed that pen pal partners were improved in QCAI communication levels. There was a significant difference between the two groups in open-ended test. This means that communication learning has an effect on the tests for mathematical thought, reasoning, and creative thought. The analysis of video protocol showed that four students in a cooperative group were improved in their speaking and listening abilities.

An Analysis of Mathematics Instruction Focused on Discourse-Based Communication (담화 중심 수학적 의사소통 수업의 분석)

  • Mathematical communication has been emphasized not only as the process of learning mathematics but also as the objective of mathematics education. However, little studies have been conducted with regard to what to consider and how to implement in the actual classroom for promoting mathematical communication. Given this background, this paper implemented a mathematics instruction in each of 2nd, 4th, and 6th grade classrooms in which specific learning objectives were considered to promote discourse-based mathematical communication. It then analyzed the degree by which such learning objectives were achieved and the linguistic interactions between the teacher and students in each classroom. This paper finally provided issues and suggestions for effective discourse-based instruction in mathematics classroom by analyzing similarities and differences among the three classrooms.

An Analysis of 5 Practices for Effective Mathematics Communication by Elementary School Teachers (효과적인 수학적 의사소통을 위한 초등 교사의 5가지 관행 분석)

  • Despite the recent emphasis on mathematical communication, little practical guide has been provided for a teacher with what to do for orchestrating high-quality discussions in a mathematics classroom. This paper analyzed 20 elementary mathematics lessons which were recognized as effective instruction in Korea using an analytic framework with regard to 5 practices for orchestrating productive mathematics discussions (i.e., anticipating, monitoring, selecting, sequencing, & connecting) by Smith and Stein (2011) in terms of performance scales from Level 0 to 3. The results of this study showed that the most frequent levels were Level 1 including undesirable practices and Level 2 including insufficient practices. There were only one or two lessons per practice which were assessed as Level 3 of good performance. Specifically, Level 2 was the most frequent with regard to monitoring and selecting, whereas Level 1 was the most frequent as for the other practices. This paper provides some implications for co-ordinating productive mathematics discussions.

  • The purposes of this article are to discuss how mathematics classroom in the departmentalized classroom system can be established for effective education, and describe current efforts within departmentalized mathematics classrooms toward achieving this goal. A departmentalized mathematics classroom would be most effective in improving education if implemented after comprehensive preplan for the specificity of the subject and characteristics of students depending on their grades and levels in their unique school environment. Continued investigation for effective communication of teaching and learning methods in a mathematics classroom will be a key component to set a departmentalized mathematics classroom up and to improve the quality of education.

  • The importance of mathematics is emerging to create new values and secure competitiveness in an intelligent information society based on the Fourth Industrial Revolution. This study was conducted with the aim of improving the academic performance and increasing interest of electronics majors in mathematics subjects. In order to develop learners' mathematical capabilities in major fields that utilize mathematics that electronics majors do not prefer, we have proposed a new teaching method to promote employment in mathematics-based electronics fields. In addition, to enhance learners' self-directed learning, we developed teaching methods for efficient mathematics subjects with programming languages as tools in electronics engineering and applied them to real-world teaching sites to effectively cultivate academic performance improvement of majors. Finally, we conducted a survey and statistically analyze the effectiveness of the developed teaching methods to present effective operational measures for mathematics education, an essential tool in intelligent information technology.

Effects of Communication Oriented Mathematics Lessons on Mathematical Disposition and Academic Achievements (의사소통 중심 수학 수업이 수학적 성향과 학업성취도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study has investigated the way to improve the communication skills emphasized in mathematics education, and analyzed the effects of Communication Oriented Mathematics Lessons on the mathematical disposition and the academic achievements. For this research, two groups of first grade students from D elementary school in Daegu city were selected which had been proved homogeneous in mathematical disposition and academic achievements via a preliminary test. The experimental group was given Communication Oriented Mathematics Lessons (COML) while the control group was given Traditional Classroom-based Instruction (TCI). COML were given along with first grade, first level mathematics for eight weeks, to improve communication skills of the students who were unfamiliar with mathematical communications. The schemes for the education include revising, summarizing, asking questions, and participating. The results of the study were summarized for mathematical disposition and academic achievements. First, COML is effective to evaluate the will to solve problems in the mathematical disposition of the students, and to make it useful for them to live their lives and to learn other subjects. Second, previous studies have shown contrary interpretations on the effects of COML. This study has found that it does not improve the students' scores on the original form of academic achievement test.

  • Mathematical knowledge is not exact definition but the supposition. Considering the nature of mathematics, realization of mathematics teaching which pursues critical thinking and rationality would be our problems. Accordingly, I set the subject of this study whether learning of constructivist discussion, which induces reflective thinking through communicating with others by expression with language of mathematical thinking in discussion, is effective against attitude on Mathematics and Mathematics achievement and study themes are as follows; A. Is learning of constructivist discussion effective against attitude on Mathematics? A-1. Is there any difference of self-conception on the subject between experimental group applied to learning of constructivist discussion and comparative group? A-2. Is there any difference of attitude on the subject between experimental group applied to learning of constructivist discussion and comparative group? A-3. Is there any difference of learning habits on the subject between experimental group applied to learning of constructivist discussion and comparative group? B. Is learning of constructivist discussion effective against mathematics achievement? The objects of study are 30 children of one class in the third grade of elementary school in Seoul for experimental group, and another one class with 30 children is comparative group. Study results and conclusion based on those results are as follows; First, students make reflective thinking through communication each other, therefore, instructor should create discussion environment for communication to express and form their mathematical thinking. Next, adaptability in student's mathematics activities and mathematical ideas should be permissible, and those should become divergent thinking. However, this study analyzed comparative results from only two each class having enrollment of thirty in the third grade. Accordingly, results from students in various grades and environment that are required to get more significant conclusion statistically.

Analysis of Mathematical Communication in Building-Block Lessons for 2nd Graders (2학년 쌓기나무 수업에서의 수학적 의사소통 분석)

  • This study focused on classroom dialogue for communicating spatial information which is supposed to be implemented through learning activities using building-blocks. Even though mathematics textbooks for $2^{nd}$ graders have activities which require abilities of explaining and understanding some spatial information, we know few about how mathematical communication between teacher and students or among students and which strategies are more effective. For this reason, two building-block lessons for $2^{nd}$ graders were observed. The characteristics of teachers' instruction and students' explanation were identified and the mathematical communication between teachers and students or among students was analyzed. As a result, mains factors of impeding students' explanation and understanding were induced and the types of their communication were classified. Based on these results, several teaching strategies for effective communication in buildingblock lessons were suggested.
