  • An analysis was done on the “inquiry sections” of Earth Science chapters of 10th grade science textbooks. The Inquiry sections were classified into different types and the frequencies of basic process skills, integrated process skills, and inquiry activities were measured in section to find out whether they sufficiently satisfy the requirements based on the 7th National Curriculum. The number of selected science textbooks that have been used in high school for this study were eleven. The number of inquiry tasks were on an average of 24.0. The types of inquiry sections and the elements of basic and integrated process skills were different in every textbooks. The number of inquiry activities were also different and analyzed more than those presented. They were not integrated activities but presented as scientific process skills. The basic process skills and integrated process skills presented in textbooks were $16\%\;and\;77.2\%$, respectively. However, the distribution of two kinds of process skills were analyzed to be $45.6\%\;and\;55.4\%$, respectively. In the process skills, the frequencies of inferring $(49.5\%)$ and data interpretation (68.7%) were the highest; however, the other process skills including recognizing problem, formulating hypothesis and generalization were not even presented in any of the text books. Due to the lack of the definitions of Science process skills and inquiry activities in the 7th National Curriculum, each text book defined these terms differently. It suggests that the meaning of inquiry, science process skills, and inquiry activities should be operationally defined in the national curriculum and the criteria for construction of inquiry activities are required.

  • Many risk-related issues within the realm of science education have been addressed through science-technology-related socioscientific issues (SSI) education. It has been established that the topics categorized as SSI are interconnected with risk-related issues. These topics emphasize numerous points of convergence with the goals of SSI education, particularly in understanding and analyzing risks, including risk assessment, risk management, and risk decision-making. Such understanding can aid in grasping the complexity of SSI based on risk-related issues and facilitate informed decision-making by structuring debates. Although there has been discourse on the need for education aimed at future survival and reflection on the responsibilities and roles of education in risk-prone societies, concepts or strategies related to actual risk responses are rarely addressed in science education and schools. Education tailored to risk-prone societies is not yet well established. This study explored the incorporation of climate change risk education into science education. A framework for climate change risk education was developed, encompassing seven elements, with corresponding definitions and examples. The researchers applied this framework to evaluate the extent to which climate change risk education is integrated into the current science curriculum of Korea. Additionally, SSI lesson scenarios related to climate change were analyzed using this risk education framework to determine the types and extent of risk education incorporated. The findings underscore the importance of teaching climate change risk education to equip students for rational decision-making.

  • This study examined the dangerous elements in primary science textbooks and had some suggestions for the minimization of safety accidents in the science class experiments. The research results are as follows: 1) The rate of accident in the primary science experiments was not high, but potential for the outbreak of safety accidents was always present. 2) it is necessary to include safety contents on science textbooks. The survey revealed that only 18 percent of safety education materials include on science textbooks. 3) It will be desirable for science experiment lessons to include safety education materials for safety experiments. This could also help the students develop the right recognition and attitude regarding safety. 4) There was lack of safety devices those were required to be kept at science labs. The survey showed that about 20 percent of the schools had the experimental clothing. 5) Safety training is often conducted in an overly simplified manner, and no special time is allocated to it. In conclusion, to improve the problems pertaining to school safety accident, courses on safety training are essential as textbooks and teachers. Constant and systematic instructions on safety should be done in order to prevent potential safety accidents.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop teaching modules related to Earth Science courses in order to enhance scientific inquiry skills of middle school students. A 'process skill-centered' module was developed to induce scientific process skills, while students explore specific scientific context. A module consists of several activities, and each activity focuses on a specific science process skill. Modules were designed such that the skills would improve depending on the completion of the module. To evaluate the effectiveness, field workshops for middle school science teachers were done twice. Science teachers, who were participants of the workshop, commented that the activities in each module were suited to enhance students' interest in science. They noted that scientific inquiry skills would be developed from each activity. Students responded that the activities in the modules were interesting, and it was a good experience to do them by themselves. Students were the focal point in class, not teachers. This enabled teachers to evaluated each student's achievement level, and provide a proper feedback. Hence, applying these modules in classes should enhance the students' scientific inquiry skills.

  • This study investigated science gifted middle school students' philosophical views on scientific knowledge, and the effects of discussing and reading related to the knowledge. Ten eighth-graders in a science gifted class participated in this study. The results can be summarized as follows: 1, At the beginning, the students had one of six positions: (a) relativism (n = 2); (b) falsificationism (n = 2); (c) borderline between relativism and eclecticism (n = 1); (d) borderline between falsificationism and eclecticism (n = 3); (e) borderline among relativism, falsificationism, and eclecticism (n = 1); and (f) borderline inductivism and eclecticism (n = 1). This result indicated that most students had on almost modern philosophical view of scientific knowledge. 2, Some students, who had chosen the item of inductivism in some questions of the instrument at the beginning, maintained their selection despite discussions and readings related to scientific knowledge. The data were examples which indicated the difficulty of changing from a traditional view to a modern view of scientific knowledge.
