The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect on child care teachers' self-efficacy in teaching science. Subjects were 297 childhood teachers who were working at a day care center. The data were collected by using three questionnaires(Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instruments, Inventory of Science Attitude, and Attitude Test for Child Care Teachers). The data were analyzed by Pearson's correlation and step-wise Regression. The results of this study are as follows; First, there were positive correlations between aptitude for child care teacher and self-efficacy in teaching science. Second, there were positive correlations between science attitude and self-efficacy in teaching science of child care teachers. Third, the significant predictors of self-efficacy in teaching science were interest in science, social value of science, interpersonal relationship management abilities, and positive emotions. The results of this study can be used to develop effective teacher training programs for early childhood science education.
Objectives: The COVID-19 outbreak has resulted in changes in the instructional methods used in kindergartens and daycare centers to prevent viral infections. This study aimed to investigate the changes in oral health care for children before and during COVID-19 and the perceptions of kindergarten and daycare center teachers about oral health care. Methods: The study subjects were 189 teachers of kindergartens and daycare centers in charge of children aged 3 to 5. The data for the analysis were collected through an online survey. Frequency analysis and the chi-squared test were used for statistical analysis. Results: Compared to before COVID-19, the frequency of tooth brushing after lunch, the number of oral health education and regular oral examinations, and the rate of childcare teachers' experiences with oral health education had decreased during COVID-19. In addition, educators in kindergarten and daycare centers responded that an oral health officer at a public health center was the most desirable oral health educator. Conclusions: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the oral health care of children in kindergartens and daycare centers has declined. Efforts are needed to restore it by educating people about oral hygiene care and oral health education, both at home and in kindergartens and daycare centers.
The purpose of this study was to verify the double mediating effects of job stress and psychological commitment in the relationship between organizational incivility and job satisfaction of child-care teachers in South Korea. 234 Korean child-care teachers were purposively selected from S city of C Province. SPSS Win.25.0 and PROCESS Macro 4.2 were used for analyzing the data, and reliability analysis, frequency analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple mediation model analysis were conducted. Results are as follows. First, correlation analysis showed significant correlations between organizational incivility, job stress, psychological commitment, and job satisfaction. Second, path analysis showed that organizational incivility had a positive effect on job stress and a negative effect on psychological commitment and job satisfaction. Job stress had a negative and significant effect on psychological commitment and job satisfaction, and psychological commitment had a positive and significant effect on job satisfaction. Third, job stress and psychological commitment had consecutive double mediation in the link between organizational incivility and job satisfaction. This study suggests a way to utilize job stress and psychological commitment when childcare teachers' organizational incivility has a negative effect on job satisfaction.
The purpose of this study was to determine if teachers' perception of professionalism, teaching intentions, and the quality of teacher-child interactions differed by teachers' education and career and how those variables were associated with one another. It was conducted in 50 teachers who were in charge of two- to five-year-olds at 22 national/public, private, and employer-supported childcare centers in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. Arnett's (1989) Caregiver Interaction Scale (CIS) translated by Choi and Shin (2015) was used to measure the quality of teacher-child interactions, and the Current Status and Self-Desire for Professional Competence scale developed by Wang (2005) and translated and revised by Jeong (2016) was used to measure a teacher's perception of professionalism. The Teaching Intention Scale (TIS) developed by Wilcox-Herzog and Ward (2004) and translated and revised by the researcher was used to measure teaching intentions. The researcher and the research assistant personally visited the centers to observe the teachers for the quality of teacher-child interactions and a questionnaire for teachers was used to determine a teacher's perception of professionalism and teaching intentions. For data analysis, t-test and Pearson's product-moment correlation analysis were performed on the basis of the questions. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, the quality of teacher-child interactions differed insignificantly by education or career. Second, teacher's perception of professionalism differed significantly by teachers' career but differed insignificantly by education: the longer career, the better perception of professionalism. Third, teaching intentions differed insignificantly by education or career. Fourth, teachers with better perception of professionalism showed higher quality of teacher-child interaction. Fifth, The higher level of teaching intentions teachers showed the more sensitive interactions they made with children.
This study investigates how naturally occurring parent groups form by using Schaefer's two axes of affection-rejection and autonomy-control, it also aims to verify whether there is a significant difference in the parent groups' emotional expressiveness and children's peer competence. A total of 201 kindergarten children between the age of 3 to 5 and their parents were given a questionnaire in order to investigate parenting attitudes and emotional expression. And children's teachers measured their peer competence. SPSS 18.0 was used and clustering analysis was conducted according to different parenting attitudes. The first fathers' group was named the lacking-affection group, the second was the democratic-reception group, the third was the ignorance group and the last was the rejection group. For mothers' groups, the first was named the rejection group, the second was the autonomous-control group and the third was the reception-respect group. Parents' emotional expressiveness of each group had a considerable difference while there was no significant difference between children's peer competence. This study was dedicated in deriving meaningful implications on the role of parents by investing the differences between each naturally occurring cluster.
Objective: This study aimed to provide policy implications by studying the class size of early childhood education institutes. Methods: By looking through researches, the educational influence of class size was examined. By using the latest statistical data, class size standard and status were compared. After class size perception in the field was considered and the main results of advanced researches were summarized and analyzed, the actual condition of class size was diagnosed. Furthermore, the national research trend was analyzed. Results: First, class size was an influencing factor on young children and teachers and its importance was reconfirmed. Second, as for standard in relation to class size in Korea, the maximum class size and teacher-child ratio were not presented together. In respect of overseas standards, infancy has similar standards, but early childhood has a little higher ratio. In the educational fields, there was growing awareness that class size should be modified. Third, there were not enough domestic researches on class size and they tended to be biased in terms of the method, targets, and contents. Conclusion/Implications: It is suggested that it is necessary to establish a class size policy for future early childhood education institutes, to implement a system, and to perform follow-up studies.
Objective: The goal of this study was to clarify the differences in children's child care center adjustment depending on child-mother's goodness of fit. Methods: A total of 478 subjects, 239 dyads of 3 and 4 year old children and their mothers and 16 teachers participated in this study. The instruments used in this study were the DOTS-R, EAS Scale and PAQ. The collected data were analyzed using a t-test, Anova, and regression with the SPSS. Results: First, mother's demand was significantly different only with regard to the income level. Second, mother's temperament and mother's demand were positively correlated and the mother's demand was influenced by the mother's temperament. Third, mother's demand according to children's gender was indicated to differ significantly. Fourth, children's temperament and mother's demand were positively correlated and mother's demand was influenced by children's temperament. Finally, ego strength according to active and adoptive temperaments in child-mother's goodness of fit had significant differences. In addition, prosocial behavior according to regular temperament of child-mother's goodness of fit was indicated to have a significant difference. Conclusion/Implications: This study suggests that it is important for mothers to understand and appropriately demand the temperament of the children in the adaptation of the child care center.
Objective: This study intended to examine whether working mothers' job satisfaction has a moderating effect on the relationship between their parenting stress and second childbearing intention. Methods: The subjects were 202 working mothers in Seoul and Gyeonggi province, all of who had a single child under 36 months old. Working mothers' parenting stress, job satisfaction and second childbearing intention were assessed with questionnaires completed by the mothers. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Duncan test, Pearson's correlation, and moderator regression analysis. Results: First, a significant difference was revealed in the mothers' second childbearing intention depending on the type of their child's main caregiver. The second childbearing intention of the mothers who relied on babysitters to care for their children was lower than that of the mothers whose mothers, mother-in-laws or child care teachers cared for their children. Secondly, working mothers' parenting stress and job satisfaction significantly affected their second childbearing intention. Thirdly, the mothers' job satisfaction moderated the relationship between their parenting stress and second childbearing intention. Conclusion/Implications: It is necessary to provide working mothers with social support for enhancing their job satisfaction and alleviating their job stress, in order to increase their second childbearing intention.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to understand the research trends of inclusive child-care for young children with disabilities and suggest some implications for future research on inclusive child-care. Methods: There were a total 330 previous research papers about child-care inclusion, which means the practice of educating and caring for children aged 0 to 5 years old with disabilities alongside their typically developing peers at child-care centers. The studies were analyzed in terms of main research topic, subject, and research methods. Results: The major results of this study were as follow. First, a quantitative increase of the research since 2003 and a sharp increase of total research in this area since 2006 were found. Second, as a result of the main topic analysis, recognition and attitude research was the most frequently conducted, followed by the research about child-care programs, teacher and family support, and the effect of inclusive child-care. Third, more than half of the researches were done by teachers. Lastly, quantitative research methods were mainly used. Conclusion/Implications: Based on these findings, this study suggested to extend the research on inclusive child-care effect, intervention programs, non-disabled children, infants, and qualitative research.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine underlying types of developmental trajectories of adaptation to child care among infants and toddlers. This study also aimed to identify latent classes in their child care adaptation types in order to find predictors that account for individual differences. Methods: Participants were 420 mothers of infants and toddlers and 123 teachers. The levels of child care adaptation of participating infants and toddlers were rated monthly from early April to June, 2019. The collected data were analyzed using growth mixture modeling, latent class analysis and multinominal logistic analysis. Results: The results of growth trajectories of child care adaptation showed there were two to four latent groups by dimension of child care adaptation. Also, the groups of individual dimensions of child care adaptation were classified into three latent classes, which were 'complying and positive group', 'negative group', and 'individualized group. Multinominal logistic analysis revealed that children's age, gender, and temperament differentiated the three latent classes of adaptation to child care. Conclusion/Implications: The results show individual characteristics that infants and toddlers possess should be prudently considered in order for successful adaptation to child care.
