In upper elementary period school adjustment and the effect of parenting face a new set of dynamics. We assumed that parental supervision, affection, incoherence, over-expectation, over-interruption and logical explanation would have an effect on individual trajectories in the development of school adjustment. Additionally, we hypothesized that this model would be different among boys and girls. In this study we analyzed three waves of data collected from 2,378 children nationwide in South Korea. This data was gathered from the Panel Study of Korean Youth and Adolescents conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute(NYPI). Growth-curve longitudinal analysis was conducted and the results indicate that levels of school adjustment had decreased through the $4^{th}$ to $6^{th}$ grade. Parents' supervision, affection and logical explanation significantly predict children's initial school adjustment as well as their rate of decrease in their levels of school adjustment. Parents' supervision had a positive effect on girls' school adjustment. Parents' over-expectation had negative effect on boys' school adjustment levels. Policy implications and future directions for research were also discussed.
Objective: This study examined the effects of grandfathers' positive parenting behavior, and fathers' positive parenting behavior on school-age boys' school adjustment. Methods: A total of 217 5th and 6th grade male elementary school students (126 5th graders and 91 6th graders) and their fathers living in Seoul and Gyeongnam province participated in the study. The data were analyzed using correlations, and structural equation modeling. Results: Grandfathers' positive parenting behavior indirectly influenced boys' school adjustment through their fathers' positive parenting behavior. It means that fathers who perceived their fathers' parenting behavior as more positive showed a higher level of positive parenting behavior, which led to a more positive school adjustment for their sons. Conclusion/Implications: These results uncovered the pathways from grandfathers' positive parenting behavior to school-age boys' school adjustment through their fathers' positive parenting behavior in an aspect of the intergenerational transmission of parenting. In addition, these findings have implications for future research of developing intervention programs for school-age boys' school adjustment and parent education programs to facilitate fathers' positive parenting behavior for school-age children's school adjustment.
This study examined the moderated mediating effect of stress by self-concept on the influence of ego-resiliency on school adjustment in children. The participants consisted of 278 4th-graders, who completed self-report questionnaires designed to assess ego-resiliency, school adjustment, self-concept, and stress. The results indicated the following: First, stress mediated the effect of ego-resiliency on school adjustment. Second, self-concept moderated the effect of stress on school adjustment. Third, the mediating effect of stress on the influence of ego-resiliency on school adjustment was moderated by self-concept. The mediating effect of stress was statistically significant when self-concept was positive, but was not statistically significant when self-concept was negative. Methods to improve children's school adjustment are also included, based on the results of this research.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of children's self-esteem on their school adjustment, focusing on the mediation of peer attachment. A total of 2,200 3rd grade children from the third Korea Child-Adolescent Panel Survey participated in this study. The instruments used in this study were the Self-esteem Scale, Peer Attachment Scale, and School Adjustment Scale. The collected data were analyzed by using a Student's t -test, Pearson's partial correlation, simple regression, and hierarchical multiple regression with SPSS ver. 16.0 software. The main results of this study are as follows: first, the boys had higher self-esteem, peer attachment, and school adjustment scores than the girls. Second, there was a significant positive correlation between children's self-esteem and peer attachment as well as a significant positive correlation between children's self-esteem and school adjustment. Further, there was a significant positive correlation between children's peer attachment and school adjustment. Finally, children's self-esteem exerted positive effects on their peer attachment, and children's peer attachment had a positive influence on their school adjustment. The effect of children's self-esteem on their school adjustment was partially mediated by their peer attachment. These findings provide preliminary evidence that the relationships between children's self-esteem and school adjustment may be mediated by their peer attachment.

This study examined the relationship between children's school adjustment and their emotion regulation. The subjects were 122 1st grade students selected from one elementary school in Incheon. Teachers rated each child using the Emotion Regulation Scale (Lee, 1997) and School Adjustment Scale (Chi & Jung, 2006). The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, t-test, correlation analysis, and stepwise regressions. The children's emotion regulation and school adjustment were differed by sex of the child. The girls were assessed to be better adapted in emotion regulation and school adjustment than the boys. The children's emotion regulation was positively related to the children's school adjustment. In addition, the children's emotion regulation predicted how well they would adjust to school life.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating role of school adjustment in the relationship between adolescents' mastery goal orientation and life satisfaction, and the differences according to gender in the relationship. Methods: The participants were 1,947 students from the 3rd, 4th, and 5th waves of the Korean Child Youth Panel Study(KCYPS). The data were analyzed with structural equation modeling(SEM) and multiple group analysis. Results: First, school adjustment of 1st graders in middle school mediated the relation between mastery goal orientation of 6th graders in elementary school and life satisfaction of 2nd graders in middle school. Second, the differences in gender were confirmed. The effect of mastery goal orientation of 6th graders in elementary school on school adjustment of 1st graders in middle school is higher for boys. In contrast, the effect of school adjustment of 1st graders in middle school on life satisfaction of 2nd graders in middle school is higher for girls. Conclusion/Implications: The results of this study suggested that mastery goal orientation before entering middle school and school adjustment after entering middle school could be important variables to increase adolescents' life satisfaction. Also, it is necessary to consider gender difference for long-term intervention for improving adolescent life satisfaction.
Purpose: This study was designed to examine the factors related to school adjustment of upper graders in elementary school. Methods: Data was collected through a questionnaire survey of 304 fifth and sixth grade students from October to November, 2014. The collected data was analyzed statistically through frequency, t-test, ANOVA, $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis, using the SPSS/WIN 22.0 program. Results: First, subjective school record and subjective health status showed significant differences in school adjustment. Second, social support and ego-resilience were positively correlated, while bullying was negatively correlated with school adjustment. Third, significant factors related to school adjustment were social support, ego-resilience, subjective school record. These variables explained 56.4% of the students' school adjustment. Bullying was negatively correlated with school adjustment, but the correlation disappeared in the multiple regression analysis, where protective factors such as social support, ego-resilience were controlled for. Conclusion: School nurses should develop plans to enhance social support (teacher support, parents support, friends support) as well as programs to improve the ego-resilience of upper elementary students to help them adjust to school and to prevent and manage bullying. Also family, school and the community should be connected cooperatively with each other.
This study was conducted to examine how children perceive emotional support, emotional regulation and self-efficiency. They came mainly from three elementary schools which are located in Gwangju metropolitan city. Questionnaires were provided to these students and the completed questionnaires were collected. Participants were 503 students. The results were as follows. First, only emotional support and self-efficiency directly affected in the school adjustment. Moreover, emotional support was the most influential factor. Second, although emotional support directly affected in the school adjustment, it also indirectly affected in the school adjustment through emotional regulation. Third, emotional regulation did not directly affect in the school adjustment, but on the other hand, it indirectly affected in the school adjustment through self-efficiency.
