  • This work describes the development of a numerical module with a multiphysics structure to simulate the thermo-hydro-chemo-mechanical behavior of compacted bentonites. First, the conceptual model, based on the state-of-the-art formulation for clay-based engineered barriers in deep geological repositories, is described. Second, the advantages of multiphysics-based modules are highlighted. Then, the guidelines to develop a code using such tools are outlined, presenting an example of implementation. Finally, the simulation of three tests that illustrate the behavior of compacted bentonites assesses the scope of the developed code. The satisfactory results obtained, and the relative simplicity of implementation, show the opportunity of the modeling strategy proposed.

  • The damages from the natural disasters, especially from the floods, have been increasing. Therefore, it is imperative to establish a BMP to diminish the damages from the floods and to enhance the welfare of the nation. Developed countries have been generating and utilizing flood risk maps to raise the alertness of the residents, and thereby achieving efficient flood management. The major objectives of this research were to develop a prototype management system for flood risk map to forecast the boundaries oi the inundation and to plot them through the integration of geographic and hydrologic database. For more efficient system development, the user requirement analysis was made. The GIS database design was done based on the results from the research work of river information standardization. A GIS database for the study area was built by using topographic information to support the hydrologic modeling. The developed prototype include several modules; river information edition module, map plotting module, and hydrologic modeling support module. Each module enabled the user to edit graphic and attribute data, to analyze and to represent the modeling results visually. Subjects such as utilization of the system and suggestions for future development were discussed.

  • Generally, it is difficult to operate moveable-weir due to the expensive cost of the facility management and manpower consumption. Also, when it is installed in a remote area, there is a problem that the cost of connection for power system increases as well as the operating cost. Therefore, this paper proposes an optimal design algorithm to replace an existing power system with an Eco-friendly power supply system for movable-weir using PCS, PV module and lithium-ion battery. Also, this paper proposes a modeling method of environment-friendly power supply system for a movable-weir based on the PSCAD/EMTDC S/W and implements 5[kW] prototype environment-friendly power supply system. As a result of the performance test using the S/W modeling and the prototype system, it is confirmed that the proposed system has stable characteristics in the independent operation mode and the interconnection mode.

  • Mix-used development in urban renewal project is done to effectively utilize the limited downtown. Generally unlike a single project, It features placing a large number of different facilities(residential, commercial, business, cultural, etc.) which is each other organically linked. The purpose of this study is to suggest the method of modeling guide for 3D preliminary cost estimation considering visual and intuitive judgement of space in mix-used development Urban Renewal project. In this research, introducing SME(Standard Module and Element) breakdown structure, FID(Finish Identity) for estimating building space unit-based quantity take off was implemented. It could narrow the discrepancy of opinion between the stakeholders with more accurate cost-estimates, comparing to the traditional methods.

  • In this paper, the test results of medium-size(120 kW class) PV system which was installed in the Taeahn thermal power station of Korea Western Power Co., Ltd., were summarized for developing the practical technology to applicate high voltage grid connection PV system. The 120 kW photovoltaic system which was consisted of 1,300 modules, PCS, and 150 kVA transformer station has been operated since Aug. 05, 2005. For verifying the modeling results of PV system, the operation data was compared with modeling results which was executed commercial PSCAD/EMTD and Psim tools. An equivalent circuit model of a solar cell has been also used for solar array modeling. A series of parameters required for array modeling have been estimated from general specification data of a solar module. A PWM voltage source inverter(VIS) and its current control scheme have been analyzed by using P&O (perturbation and Observation) MPPT algorithms technique.

  • For the purpose of the optimal design of a frame and plate type of pervaporation module, model equations which can predict the effects of feed flow condition on the temperature distribution of the feed developed in the module were established and the temperature distribution with feed flow condition was investigated through the model si$$\mu$ation. With increasing the Reynolds number of feed flow in the module, the flow velocity gradient in the channel height-direction as well as the volume rate of feed which acts as energy source for the evaporation of perrneants on the permeate-side surface of a membrane increased to such an extent that both mass and heat flux in the channel height direction could increase and the temperature drop of feed due to the evaporation of the permeant could be reduced correspondingly. A decrease in channel height caused the temperature drop of feed because of decreasing feed flow in the module. It was observed that the si$$\mu$ation result on the effect of Re on the temperature distribution of feed in the module has an agreement with experiment.

  • In the past, the efficiency of solar cells had been increased in order to increase the efficiency of solar modules. However, in recent years, in order to increase output in the solar industry and market, the competitiveness of solar cells based on large-area solar cells and multi-bus bar has been increasing. Multi-busbar solar module is a technology to reduce power loss by increasing the number and width of the front busbar of the solar cell and reducing the current value delivered by the busbar by half through half-cutting. In the case of the existing M2 (156.75×156.75 mm2) solar cell, even with a half-cut, power loss could be sufficiently reduced, but as the area of the solar cell is enlarged to more than M6 (166×166 mm2), the need for more divisions emerged. This affected not only solar cells but also inverters required for module array configuration. Therefore, in this study, the electrical characteristics of a large-area solar cell and after division were extracted using Griddler simulation. The output characteristics of the module were predicted by applying the solar cell parameters after division to PSPice, and a guideline for the large-area solar module design was presented according to the number of divisions of the large-area solar cell.

  • Modeling and simulation of air humidification by hollow fiber membrane contactors are investigated in the current study. A computational fluid dynamic model was developed by solving the k-epsilon turbulence 2D Navier-Stokes equations as well as mass conservation equations for steady-state conditions in membrane contactors. Finite element method is used for the study of the air humidification under different operating conditions, with a focus on the humidity density, total mass transfer flux and velocity field. There has been good agreement between simulation results and experimental data obtained from literature. It is found that the enhancement of air stream decreases the outlet humidity from 0.392 to 0.340 (module 1) and from 0.467 to 0.337 (module 2). The results also indicated that there has been an increase in air velocity in the narrow space of shell side compared with air velocity wide space of shell side. Also, irregular arrangement has lower dead zones than regular arrangement which leads to higher water flux.

  • Modeling for utility interactive photovoltaic power generation system has been studied using PSCAD/EMTDC. The proposed model system consists of a simple utility circuit configuration, 3kW of single phase utility interactive photovoltaic system, single phase PWM voltage source inverter module, and feed forward PID controller as control circuit. In the system, the DC current is assumed constant, and the voltage source inverter provides sinusoidal ac current for the loads of utility system. The simulation results are given in order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed model. The phases of output voltage of utility system and the output current of the inverter module are compared. Especially, the compensation effect of the photovoltaic system for the unbalanced load is analyzed. and the transient phenomena for a phase to ground fault are also simulated.

  • In this paper, we describe a notion of sensor modeling method in multisensor data fusion using fuzzy set theory. Each sensor module is characterized by its fuzzy constraints to specific features of environment. These sensor fuzzy constraints can be imposed on multisensory data to verify their degree of truth and compatibility toward the final decision making. In comparison with other sensor modeling methods, such as probabilistic models or rule-based models, the proposed method is very simple and can be easily implemented in intelligent robot systems.
