  • In this study, the problem of strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) columns by a central steel section with minimum amount is taken up. For this purpose, RC columns with central reinforcing elements such as a steel bar, a steel H section and a steel pipe were taken up. To certify the effect of this way of reinforcing, experimental study using specimens of RC columns of shear span ratio of 2.5 was carried out. The variables which are considered to affect the behavior of RC columns subjected to axial load and cyclic shear load are the magnitude of axial load, tie ratio and main bar ratio. As the results of this study, the effect of a central reinforcing element for making higher the earthquake resistant properties of RC columns were observed.

  • This paper describes a model on shear strength of RC columns strengthened with FRP sheets. In this study, we propose a confined concrete strength model of RC columns confined by transverse reinforcement as well as FRP sheet by introducing corresponding effective confinement coefficient for each confined concrete area. Then, a shear strength model of the confined RC columns is proposed by lower and upper bound limit analysis which are based on the truss-arch model theory and shear band failure theory, respectively. Along with shear test data obtained from strengthened column specimens, the developed analytical models are verified. The comparison shows that the proposed model can be used effectively for the prediction of both ultimate strength and required amount of strengthening in retrofit design for RC columns.

  • To study the seismic resistance of the shear capacity of the RC beam-column joints of two-story and four-story RC buildings, sample buildings are designed with ordinary moment resisting frame. For the shear capacity of joints, the equations of FEMA 356 and NZ seismic assessment are selected and compared. For comparison, one group of buildings is designed only for gravity loads and the other group is designed for seismic and gravity loads. For 16 cases of the designed buildings, seismic performance point is evaluated through push-over analysis and the capacity of joint shear strength is checked. Not only for the gravity designed buildings but also for seismic designed buildings, the demand of joint shear is exceeding the capacity at exterior joints. However, for interior joint, the demand of joint shear exceeds the capacity only for one case. At exterior joints, the axial load stress ratio is lower than 0.21 for gravity designed buildings and 0.13 for seismic designed buildings.

  • Many older reinforced concrete (RC) buildings were constructed and designed with only gravity loads in mind. Columns in those buildings have insufficient reinforcement details that do not satisfy the requirements specified in current seismic design standards. This study aims to develop drift-based fragility functions for lightly RC columns. For this purpose, a database of 193 lightly RC columns was constructed to determine central and dispersion values of drift ratios for individual damage states. Additionally, to develop more accurate fragility functions of the columns, the failure mode of RC columns was incorporated into fragility functions. The classification procedure for column failure mode is proposed in this study. Fragility functions for older RC columns are constructed according to four different damage states. The main variables of the fragility functions proposed in this study are column properties and failure mode.

  • Recently, study of confining effect in column members is progressed. But these studies are limited to about RC column and external confining effect in hollow columns. Internal confining effect in hollow columns has not researched. Internal confining stress is assumed the same external confining stress in hollow columns. In this study, there are to investigate the internal direction confining effect in ICH CFT column by FEA analysis. FEA analysis methods have verified by experimental values. Parametric study has performed as thickness of internal tube, hollow ratio, diameter of column and bending stiffness between concrete and external tube. Modified equations have suggested to estimating economic and reasonable thickness of internal tube.

  • As increasing number of large-size earthquake around Korean peninsula, many interests have been focused to the earthquake strengthening of existing structures. Fiber reinforced plastic composite material is one of strengthening material widely used to increase seismic performance of structures. It should have high stiffness as well as large ductility to provide best strengthening result. Thus selection of stiffener and fiber in composite is of important. In this study, the optimal combination of fiber and stiffener is selected with variety of tensile tests. In order to investigate performance of chosen composite material, several finite element analyses are performed with proposed FRP composite material for existing RC columns. It is discussed that the seismic performance of strengthened columns through the load-displacement relationship. It is shown that the proposed composite material can increase the strength as well as ductility of exiting RC columns.

  • The objective of this research is to provide better knowledge on the behavior of strong axis SRC column-RC beam joint, supported by experimental results, that can be broadly applicable to many structures. For this purpose, firstly literature reviews and field survey were made to classify the most commonly used for these types of joints. Then, experimental program was designed and performed including 6 SRC column-RC beam joint specimens designed with various joint details. Using the experimental results obtained from the quasi-static cyclic tests, structural performances of the joints such as hysteretic curves, maximum strength capacities, strength degradation beyond the maximum strength, ductilities, and energy dissipation capacities were investigated. Test results showed that specimens with wide beam shape (RCW-P, RCW-W, RCW-F) and T beam shape (RCT-W) showed better structural performances than the bracket type specimens (HBR-L, HBR-S). These specimens also revealed to have higher strength capacities than the nominal design strength. However, H beam bracket type specimens (HBR-L, HBR-S) need further study both analytically and experimentally to verify the reason for unexpected structural performances.

  • The collapse of reinforced concrete (RC) frame buildings is mainly caused by the failure of columns. To prevent brittle failure of RC column, numerous studies have been conducted on the seismic performance of strengthened RC columns. Concrete jacketing method, which is one of the retrofitting method of RC members, can enhance strength and stiffness of original RC column with enlarged section and provide uniformly distributed lateral load capacity throughout the structure. The experimental studies have been conducted by many researchers to analyze seismic performance of seismic strengthened RC column. However, structures which have plan and vertical irregularities shows torsional behavior, and therefore it causes large deformation on RC column when subjected to seismic load. Thus, test results from concentric cyclic loading can be overestimated comparing to eccentric cyclic test results, In this paper, two kinds of eccentric loading pattern was suggested to analyze structural performance of RC columns, which are strengthened by concrete jacketing method with new details in jacketed section. Based on the results, it is concluded that specimens strengthened with new concrete jacketing method increased 830% of maximum load, 150% of maximum displacement and changed the failure modes of non-strengthened RC columns.

  • The objective of this study is to clarify the seismic capacity and the characteristics in the hysteretic behavior of RC structures with non-seismic detailing. To do this, an exterior beam-column subassemblage was selected from a ten story RC building and six 1/3-scale specimens were manufactured with three variables; (1) with and without slab, (2) upward and downward direction of anchorage for the bottom bar in beams, and (3) with and without hoop bars in the joint region. The test results have shown that (1) the existence of slab increased the strength in positive and negative moment, 25% and 52%, respectively; (2) the Korean practice of anchorage (downward and 25 $d_{b}$ anchorage length) caused the 8% reduction of strength and the early strength degradation in comparison with the case of seismic details; and (3) the existence of hoop bars in the joint region shows significant role in preventing the pull-out.t.
