  • This paper describes an efficient architecture for LDPC(Low-Density Parity Check) decoder, which supports three block lengths (648, 1,296, 1,944) of IEEE 802.11n standard. To minimize hardware complexity, the min-sum algorithm and block-serial layered structure are adopted in DFU(Decoding Function Unit) which is a main functional block in LDPC decoder. The optimized H-ROM structure for multi block lengths reduces the ROM size by 42% as compared to the conventional method. Also, pipelined memory read/write scheme for inter-layer DFU operations is proposed for an optimized operation of LDPC decoder.

  • The simplest bit error detection scheme is to append a parity bit to the end of a bit sequence. In this paper an error correction technique with the use of a parity bit is proposed, and the performance of the proposed system is analyzed. The error probability of the proposed system is compared with the output of computer simulation of the proposed system. It is also compared with the error probability of error at BPSK system, and the signal-to-noise ratio gain is showed.

  • LDPC(Low Density Parity Check) codes are described by bipartite graphs with bit nodes and parity-check nodes. Tanner derived minimum distance bounds of the regular LDPC code in terms of the eigenvalues of the associated adjacency matrix. In this paper we generalize the Tanner's results. We derive minimum distance bounds applicable to both regular and blockwise-irregular LDPC codes. The first bound considers the relation between bit nodes in a minimum-weight codeword, and the second one considers the connectivity between parity nodes adjacent to a minimum-weight codeword. The derived bounds make it possible to describe the distance property of the code in terms of the eigenvalues of the associated matrix.

  • The improved belief-propagation-based algorithms, such as normalized min-sum algorithm (NMSA) or offset min-sum algorithm (OMSA), are widely used to decode LDPC(Low-Density Parity-Check) codes because they are less computationally complex and work well even at low SNR(Signal-to-Noise Ratio). However, these algorithms work well only when an appropriate normalization factor or offset value is used. A new method that uses a CMD(Check Node Message Distribution) chart and least-square method, which has been recently proposed, has advantages on computational complexity over other approaches to get optimal coefficients. Furthermore, this method can be used to derive coefficients for each iteration. In this paper, we apply this method and propose an algorithm to derive a combination of normalization factor and offset value for a combined normalized and offset min-sum algorithm to further improve the decoding of LDPC codes. Simulations on the next-generation broadcasting standards, ATSC 3.0 LDPC codes, prove that a combined normalized and offset min-sum algorithm which takes the proposed coefficients as correction coefficients shows the best BER performance among other decoding algorithms.

  • In this paper, we analyze the hardware architecture of Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) decoder using Log Likelihood Ration-Belief Propagation (LLR-BP) decoding algorithm. Various design issues that affect the decoding performance and the hardware complexity are discussed and the tradeoffs between the hardware complexity and the performance are analyzed. The message data for passing error probability is quantized to 7 bits and among them the fractional part is 4 bits. To maintain the decoding performance, the integer and fractional parts for the intrinsic information is 2 bits and 4 bits respectively. We discuss the alternate implementation of $\Psi$(x) function using piecewise linear approximation. Also, we improve the hardware complexity and the decoding time by applying overlapped scheduling.

  • This paper describes a design of low-density parity-check(LDPC) decoder supporting block length 2,304-bit and code rate 1/2 of IEEE 802.16e mobile WiMAX standard. The designed LDPC decoder employs the min-sum algorithm and partially parallel layered-decoding architecture which processes a sub-matrix of $96{\times}96$ in parallel. By exploiting the properties of the min-sum algorithm, a new memory reduction technique is proposed, which reduces check node memory by 46% compared to conventional method. Functional verification results show that it has average bit-error-rate(BER) of $4.34{\times}10^{-5}$ for AWGN channel with Fb/No=2.1dB. Our LDPC decoder synthesized with a $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS cell library has 174,181 gates and 52,992 bits memory, and the estimated throughput is about 417 Mbps at 100-MHz@l.8-V.

  • In the deep sub-micron ICs, growing amounts of on-die memory and scaling effects make embedded memories increasingly vulnerable to reliability and yield problems. Spare columns are often included in memories to repair defective cells or bit lines during production test. In many cases, the repair process will not use all spare columns. Schemes have been proposed to exploit these unused spare columns to store additional check bits which can be used to reduce the miscorrection probability for triple errors in single error correction-double error detection (SEC-DED). These additional check bits increase the dimensions of the parity check matrix (H-matrix) requiring extra area overhead. A method is proposed in this paper to efficiently fill the extra rows of the H-matrix on the basis of similarity of logic between the other rows. Optimization of the whole H-matrix is accomplished through logic sharing within a feasible operating time resulting in reduced area overhead. A detailed implementation using fuse technology is also proposed in this paper.

  • In this paper, we proposed high speed LDPC encoder architecture for DVB-S2 standard. In conventional algorithm, the processes of parity calculations are serial fashion. Therefore conventional algorithm need clocks of number of parity. The proposed LDPC encoding architecture is based on a parallel 360 bits-wise operations. The key issues for realizing high speed are using the two kinds of index addresses and make use of memories efficiently. We implemented a half rate LDPC encoder on an FPGA, and confirmed its maximum throughput is up to 10 Gbps on 100MHz clock.

  • There are three standard weight functions on a linear code viz. Hamming weight, Lee weight, and Euclidean weight. Euclidean weight function is useful in connection with the lattice constructions [2] where the minimum norm of vectors in the lattice is related to the minimum Euclidean weight of the code. In this paper, we obtain an upper bound over the number of parity check digits for Euclidean weight codes detecting and correcting burst errors.
