  • Although there are various form of statistical graphs in the real world, the statistical graphs in elementary mathematics textbooks are very formalized by the pedagogical constraints. In this study, I examine the frames of statistical graphs and their educational importance, and analyze the frames in Korean, Australian, and MiC textbooks. As a result, the frames of statistical graphs in elementary mathematics textbooks (1) draws students' attention to the components of the graphs, (2) plays a supplementary role in students' drawing graphs by hands, and (3) helps to apply school mathematics to statistical problem solving in real life. The frames of statistical graphs in Korean textbooks is the form of tables focusing on (1) and (2), but these of MiC textbooks has various forms focusing on (3). On the other hand, Austalian textbooks introduced the table-form frames of statistical graphs at the lower graders, but gradually changed to the axis-form frames as the grade level increased. Based on this, a recommendation was drawn on how to deal with the frames of statistical graphs in elementary mathematics textbooks.

  • This study intends to compare the way of introducing fractions in elementary mathematics textbooks of south and those of north Korea. After thorough investigations of the seven differences were identified. First, the mathematics textbooks of south Korea use concrete materials like apples when they introduce equal partition context, while those of north Korea do not use that kind of concrete materials. Second, in the textbooks of south Korea, equal partition of discrete quantities are considered after continuous ones are introduced. This is different from the approach of the north Korean text-books in which both quantities are regarded at the same time. Third, the quantitative fraction which refers to the rational number with unit of measure at the end of it, is hardly used in the textbooks of south. However, the textbooks of north Korea use it as the main representations of fractions. Fourth, in the textbooks of south Korea, vanous activities related to fractions are more emphasized, while in the textbooks of north Korea, various meanings of fractions textbooks from south and north Korea focused on the ways of introducing partition approach and equivalence relation as operational schemes of fractions, the following play an important role before defining fraction. Fifth, the textbooks of south Korea introduce equivalent fractions with number one using number bar, and do not consider the reason why that sort of fractions are regarded. On the contrary, the textbooks of north Korea introduce structural equivalence relation by using various contexts including length measure and volume measure situations. Sixth, whereas real-life contexts are provided for introducing equivalent fractions in the textbooks of south Korea, visual explanations and mathematical representations play an important role in the textbooks of north Korea. Seventh, the means of finding equivalent fractions are provided directly in the textbooks of south Korea, whereas the nature of equivalent fractions and the methods of making equivalent fractions are considered in the textbooks of north Korea.

  • Mathematics is a way of thinking. To do mathematics means to think mathematically. In other words, mathematics education and mathematics literacy are related. In elementary and secondary school mathematics education in many countries, teaching of mathematics using textbooks is conducted mostly in their native language. So mathematics education takes place while reading, writing, listening, and speaking mathematics. Analysis of mathematics textbooks for the lower grades of undergraduate mathematics shows that most advanced countries in mathematics use excellent undergraduate mathematics textbooks written in their native language. However, the ratio of using imported textbooks from foreign countries is particularly high in the case of textbooks for mathematics majors at Korean universities. In this article, the effect of language used in university mathematics education is analized. In particular, the importance of high-quality leading-edge university mathematics textbooks in native language is introduced by analyzing the case of Bourbaki in France and 'War of language' at the Israel Institute of Technology. The innovation of French university mathematics education in the 20th century began with Bourbaki's 'Fundamentals of Mathematics', a French textbook written in his native language. Israel's Technion and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem continue to teach all subjects in their mother tongue. This has led to produce many Nobel Prize and Fields medal winners in these two countries. This study shows that textbooks and languages used in university mathematics education has affected mathematical literacy.

  • In this study, some discordance between curriculum and textbooks in usage of mathematics terms, dual meaning of some terms in the usage of those terms in textbooks, and inconsistency of defining methods of terms are discussed through some examples. Generally it can not be expected that there are any discordance between curriculum and textbooks, because textbooks are developed in the basis of curriculum. But actually, some discordance between curriculum and textbooks can be found out. Some terms are used with two different meaning, geometric figure and measure. It can be causative of troubles in teaching and learning mathematics. Terms of same kind can be expected to be consistent in the way of defining, but some examples defined inconsistently can be found out. The following four suggestions are offered as conclusions. First, textbooks must be consistent with curriculum. Second, The meaning of terms used in textbooks must be stipulated obviously. Third, terms of same kind must be defined consistently. Fourth, it is necessary to supplement a system for developing elementary mathematics textbooks. The result of this study can help develop new textbooks, and revise curriculum, and develop new curriculum.

  • In this study, we investigated the application of oriental history of mathematics in school mathematics teaching. We set up three study problems to achieve this purpose. First, we analyze the middle and high school mathematics textbooks and auxiliary books. Second, we survey the mathematics teacher's knowledge and degree of application on history of mathematics. Third, we develop the teaching and learning materials on oriental history of mathematics. We performed three study-methods to settle above study problem. First, we analyzed 24 textbooks and auxiliary books for study problem 1. There were 6 middle school mathematics textbooks and 6 auxiliary books and also 6 high school mathematics textbooks and 6 auxiliary books. We categorized the contents into "anecdote", "systematization", "application of problem", "expansibility of thought", and "comparative of the contents". Second, we surveyed the 78 mathematics teachers's knowledge and degree of application using questionnaire about knowledge and application on history of mathematics. The questionnaire was made up of four types of question; the effect of material about history of mathematics, the understanding of western history of mathematics, the understanding of oriental history of mathematics; the direction of development of teaching material. Third, we exemplified the teaching and learning materials about three categories: "anecdote", "comparative of the contents".

  • In this study, the situation of publishing middle and high school mathematics textbooks used at the period of the first curriculum were investigated. In the period of the first curriculum, middle and high school textbooks were used from 1956, and middle school textbooks were used until 1965, and high school textbooks were used until 1967. First of all, the announcements of the ministry of education related to the textbook authorization were examined in the government official gazettes of 1956~1967. However, there were considerable typographical errors in these announcements of the ministry of education. So textbooks used at that period were examined, and typographical errors were corrected by cross-checking the bibliographic information.

  • In this study, the researchers analyzed the 2015 revised 3rd~6th grade Korean mathematics textbooks from the aspects of social justice in mathematics education. For this study, the researchers constructed a textbook analysis framework for social justice subjects, which categorized by social issues, economy education, democratic education, personality education, safety education, environmental education, and career education. As a result, the 2015 revised elementary mathematics textbooks were reflected the subject matter of social justice in the order of social issues, economic education and democratic education, personality education and environmental education, safety education and career education. Also, the subject of social justice appears in all 3rd~6th grade mathematics textbooks, but it is not explicitly dealt with by combining it with mathematical content. The researchers suggested that mathematics lessons should be developed including social justice issues aligned with elementary mathematics contents.
