AXIOMS FOR THE THEORY OF RANDOM VARIABLE STRUCTURES: AN ELEMENTARY APPROACH

  • The theory of random variable structures was first studied by Ben Yaacov in [2]. Ben Yaacov's axiomatization of the theory of random variable structures used an early result on the completeness theorem for Lukasiewicz's [0, 1]-valued propositional logic. In this paper, we give an elementary approach to axiomatizing the theory of random variable structures. Only well-known results from probability theory are required here.

  • Experimentation using computer plays an important part in education and research in graph theory. The purpose of this paper is to develop the CAS techniques for the hands-on approach in graph theory specifically on the topic of constructing the spanning tree. This paper discusses the advantages of CAS as the software system for doing graph theory and introduces the software solutions integrating multimedia user interface developed by the author, which extend the functionality of the existing CAS-based graph theory software package.

  • Nowadays there are practically no mathematical courses in which Computer Algebra Systems (CAS) programs, such as MATHEMATlCA, Maple, and TI-89/92, are not used to some extent. However, generally the usage of these programs is reduced to illustration of computing processes: calculation of integrals, differentiation, solution of various equations, etc. This is obtained by usage of standard command of type: Solve [...] in MATHEMATICA. At the same time the main difficulties arise at teaching nonconventional mathematical courses such as coding theory, discrete mathematics, cryptography, Scientific computing, which are gaining the increasing popularity now. Now it is impossible to imagine a modern engineer not having basic knowledge in discrete mathematics, Cryptography, coding theory. Digital processing of signals (digital sound, digital TV) has been introduced in our lives.

In-Service Mathematics Teacher Training from the Van Hiele Theory Perspective

  • In this work we present a study undertaken with in-service mathematics teachers of primary and secondary school where we describe and analyze the didactical competences needed to implement an innovative design in geometry applying Van Hiele's models. The relationship between such competences and an ideal teacher profile is also studied. Teachers' epistemology is established in terms of didactical competences and we can see that this epistemology is an element that helps us understand the difficulties that teachers face in practice when implementing an innovative curriculum, in this case, geometry based on the Van Hiele theory.

TYPE SPACES AND WASSERSTEIN SPACES

  • Types (over parameters) in the theory of atomless random variable structures correspond precisely to (conditional) distributions in probability theory. Moreover, the logic (resp. metric) topology on the type space corresponds to the topology of weak (resp. strong) convergence of distributions. In this paper, we study metrics between types. We show that type spaces under $d^{\ast}-metric$ are isometric to Wasserstein spaces. Using optimal transport theory, two formulas for the metrics between types are given. Then, we give a new proof of an integral formula for the Wasserstein distance, and generalize some results in optimal transport theory.

  • New fixed point theorems for permissible maps between $Fr{\acute{e}}chet$ spaces are presented. The proof relies on index theory developed by Dzedzej and on viewing a $Fr{\acute{e}}chet$ space as the projective limit of a sequence of Banach spaces.

  • G. Gruenhage gave a characterization of paracompactness of locally compact spaces in terms of game theory ([6]). Starting from that result we give another such characterization using a selective version of that game, and study a selection principle in the class of locally compact spaces and its relationships with game theory and a Ramseyan partition relation. We also consider a selective version of paracompactness.

  • Category theory gives a convenient language for the study of mathematical structures besides its own study. In this paper, we investigate how the abstract structure theory emerged in 1930s affects the study in Topology and eventually becomes a rudiment for the category theory. Moreover, various extensions and universal mapping problems were put in their proper perspective as reflections by the category theory and by its duality principle, coreflections become an interesting subject in Topology, both of which give rise to a new discipline of the categorical topology.
