A Comparison of Preceptors' and New Graduate Nurses' Perception of Teaching Effectiveness (신규간호사와 프리셉터가 인지하는 프리셉터의 교수효율성 비교)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare preceptors and new graduate nurses on their perception of preceptor teaching effectiveness. Methods: The participants were 90 new nurses and 90 preceptors who worked in A medical center. The data were collected from July 1 to September 30, 2008. A cross-sectional descriptive survey was done using a structured questionnaire. Results: New nurses' perception ($4.07{\pm}.44$) of the preceptor teaching effectiveness was significantly higher than perception of the preceptors ($3.57{\pm}.37$). Fifty five percent of new graduate nurses reported a lack of coherence in the preceptor's practice guidelines. For 5 causal factors classified on the teaching effectiveness, the factor of 'Professional knowledge and ability' showed the highest score, but 'Interpersonal and communication skill' got lowest score for both group. Preceptors responded that they did not have enough time to teach well because of their heavy workloads. Conclusions: These results suggest that the preceptors need appropriate compensation and education opportunities, and new graduate nurses need consistent education by the teaching professionals. Therefore, it is important to give preceptors full charge of the preceptorship. Also, it will be necessary to develop education programs to enhance interpersonal and communication skill for preceptors and new nurses.

Strategy for Improving Core Nursing Competency-based Education (핵심간호역량 기반 교육과정 개선 전략)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the core competencies of nursing students and to improve competency-based nursing education. Methods: A triangulation method was used. A literature review and focus group interviews (FGI) were used to identify nursing core competencies. The present level of nursing competencies of students was identified through the nursing core performance questionnaire. Results: 1) Nursing core competencies, including 23 different competencies, were categorized into seven areas through a literature review and qualitative research. These competencies included: desirable personality, attitude & interpersonal skills, professionalism, nursing knowledge & basic nursing skills, ability to cope with nursing situations, basic ability in nursing research, coping ability with changes in the healthcare environment, and leadership. 2) Core nursing skills, nursing research, and nursing leadership were the three lowest ranking competencies. Some courses in the curriculum were to be newly established in an e-learning system, student's portfolio in non-curriculum. Conclusions: Further research is needed in order to show effects of the changes. Changes after applying the strategy of a nursing education program will be measured. Continuous research in competency-based nursing education is needed.

Analysis of Students' Job Basic Competencies and Career Reading Status of the College of Liberal Arts: Focused on "A University" (문과대학 학생들의 직업기초역량과 진로독서 실태 분석 -A 대학을 중심으로 -)

  • This study identified problems in reading for future careers and suggests approaches to solve the identified problems by analyzing the fundamental vocational competence and reading for a future career. The study included 457 students in the liberal arts college (humanities and education programs) at "A" university. In accordance with the analysis, communication ability (average 3.61), interpersonal relation ability (3.59), literacy (3.40) and problem solving ability (3.39) were relatively high in fundamental vocational competence, while numeracy (2.72) and entrepreneurship (2.89) were low. Next, 65.2% of those reported no reading for their future career. 46.3% answered 'no time to read books related to my future career.' 25.8% selected 'no books worth reading related to my future career.' 22.5% said 'no curiosity about my future career.' Considering that those who did not read any materials related to a future career reached 65.2% and a number of students had low fundamental vocational competence, this paper suggested the implementation of a systematic educational program for standardizing and strengthening fundamental vocational competence and enhancing understanding of future careers.

Survey Study about the Priority of Vocational Core Competence for the Occupational Therapist (작업치료사의 직업기초능력 우선순위 조사연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to survey the occupational therapists's vocational core competency. Study subjects were 138 occupational therapists and 95 students majored occupational therapy and they participated in the survey about the vocational core ability to confirm the factors about the vocational core ability. As the results of these, both occupational therapists and university students majored occupational therapy felt the need for vocational ability and communication skills, interpersonal relationship skills, and problem-solving skills were found to be important, and that they also possessed them. However, only in the group of students majored occupational therapy showed that technical skills were important, but they did not possess the most. Accordingly, it is necessary to consider a curriculum that can collect knowledge and information on various skills necessary for actual vocational performance as the occupational therapist.

A Development of Career Aptitude Scale for Design Majoring University Students (디자인 진로적성검사의 개발)

  • This study developed 'Design Career Aptitude Scale' to help design majoring college students who are seeking their career goals or conflicting to decide their majors. The subscales of the 'Design Career Aptitude Scale' are 'basic job competency', 'basic design competency' and' advanced design competency'. This study further classified the 'basic job competency' and 'basic design competency' into several subareas and defined each concepts. Based upon the classification of each subareas, tentative test items were developed through the verification of validity three times by seven design professionals. A pilot study of the developed scale was administered to 506 design majoring college students. The results by exploratory factor analysis were that the basic job competency was composed of four factors; ability of interpersonal relations, goal-driven ability, problem solving ability and self-developing ability. The basic design competency was composed of five factor, grounding in design, computer skills, material sensitivity, formative ability and color sensitivity. The results can be seen as an adequate, delicate factor structure to represent design aptitude, and also the scale can be a useful tool to the students who are conflicting to decide their majors and careers. The further study needed to validate the scale through the investigation of the relationship with related scales measuring designing ability, and with other criteria-referenced group.

Cognitive and Emotional Empathy in Young Adolescents: an fMRI Study

  • Objectives: We investigated the differences in cognitive and emotional empathic ability between adolescents and adults, and the differences of the brain activation during cognitive and emotional empathy tasks. Methods: Adolescents (aged 13-15 years, n=14) and adults (aged 19-29 years, n=17) completed a range of empathic ability questionnaires and were scanned functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during both cognitive and emotional empathy task. Differences in empathic ability and brain activation between the groups were analyzed. Results: Both cognitive and emotional empathic ability were significantly lower in the adolescent compared to the adult group. Comparing the adolescent to the adult group showed that brain activation was significantly greater in the right transverse temporal gyrus (BA 41), right insula (BA 13), right superior parietal lobule (BA 7), right precentral gyrus (BA 4), and right thalamus whilst performing emotional empathy tasks. No brain regions showed significantly greater activation in the adolescent compared to the adult group while performing cognitive empathy task. In the adolescent group, scores of the Fantasy Subscale in the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, which reflects cognitive empathic ability, negatively correlated with activity of right superior parietal lobule during emotional empathic situations (r=-0.739, p=0.006). Conclusion: These results strongly suggest that adolescents possess lower cognitive and emotional empathic abilities than adults do and require compensatory hyperactivation of the brain regions associated with emotional empathy or embodiment in emotional empathic situation. Compensatory hyperactivation in the emotional empathy-related brain areas among adolescents are likely associated with their lower cognitive empathic ability.

The Relation between Gender and Multiple Intelligence and Technological Problem Solving Ability of Middle School Students (중학생들의 성별에 따른 다중지능과 기술적 문제해결력과의 관계)

  • This study investigated what effects multiple intelligence, through which the diverse intelligence abilities of a learner are identified, has on technological problem solving ability according to sex. And it was carried out to present a way to reduce the gap between boys and girls in technological problem solving ability. The subject was 833 middle school students in the third grade (boys: 423, girls: 410) whose schools are located in a megalopolis or more large area. And the instruments developed by Yong-Lyn Moon(2001) and in CRESST(1998) were used. The results of this study are as follows. First, it appeared that there were statistically meaningful differences at six items in multiple intelligence between boys and girls. The six items were bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, logical-mathematical intelligence, naturalistic intelligence, musical intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, and introspective intelligence. Second, in technological problem solving ability, it appeared that boys and girls showed statistically meaningful differences at self-regulation and problem solving strategy. Third, it appeared that logical-mathematical intelligence, linguistic intelligence, introspective intelligence, and natural intelligence had an effect on boys in the way of self-regulation and logic-mathematical intelligence, introspective intelligence, naturalistic intelligence, and linguistic intelligence did on girls. Fourth, it appeared that logical-mathematical intelligence, musical intelligence, and bodily-kinesthetic intelligence had an effect on boys in the way of problem solving ability and linguistic intelligence and musical intelligence had on girls. Fifth, it appeared that logical-mathematical intelligence did an effect on both sexes in drawing up the understanding of contents. On the basis of the results of this study, the area related to multiple intelligence directly or indirectly should be developed in the course of designing the primary and secondary curriculums to reduce the gap between boys and girls in multiple intelligence. With these efforts, the scholastic attainments gap caused by the difference of multiple intelligence will be overcome.

Growth Mindset, Grit and Self-Directed Learning Ability of Nursing Students in Online Education (COVID-19로 인한 온라인학습환경에서 간호대학생의 성장마인드셋, 그릿 및 자기주도학습능력)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between growth mindset, grit and self-directed learning ability of nursing students and investigate the factors influencing self-directed learning ability in online education. Data were collected through online surveys; subjects were consisted of 194 nursing students from J University in province C. Data were analyzed based on frequency, percentile, mean, Pearson's correlations, and multiple regressions. Self-directed learning ability, mindset, and grit in nursing students showed significant positive correlations with each other. Grit had the strongest influence on nursing students' self-directed learning abilities, followed by satisfaction for major studies, standard of living, interpersonal relations, and growth mindset; these factors accounted for 38.1% of the total variance in self-directed learning abilities among nursing students(Adj. R2=.381, p<.001). Overall self-directed learning ability can be improved by grit, growth mindset enhancement program.

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Nursing Students' Adjustment to College Life : Focus on empathic ability, perceived stress, and resilience (코로나19 팬데믹이 간호대학생의 대학생활적응에 미치는 영향 : 공감능력, 지각된 스트레스, 회복탄력성을 중심으로)

  • Purpose : In this study, we aimed to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on nursing students' adjustment to college life by focusing on their empathic ability, perceived stress, and resilience. Methods : We applied a descriptive survey research design, which included a self-report questionnaire. The participants comprised 307 nursing students in B city. The data were analyzed by calculating the percentages, means, standard deviations, t-tests, ANOVA, Scheffé test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and hierarchical regression using SPSS 23.0. Results : The participants' empathic ability score was 3.30±.42, perceived stress score 1.85±.49, resilience score 3.44±.64, and adjustment to college life score 3.25±.52. Adjustment to college life was positively correlated with resilience (r=.43, p<.001) but negatively correlated with perceived stress (r=.27, p<.001). Factors affecting adjustment to college life include, among general characteristics in Model 1, in descending order, major satisfaction-satisfied (β=.54, p<.001), interpersonal conflict: never (β=.26, p=.018), health status: healthy (β=.25, p=.002), character: positive (β=.21, p=.006), character: optimistic (β=.19, p=.015), parents' economic power: high (β=.15, p=.047), and gender: male (β=.11, p=.016). Model 1 was statistically significant (F=11.67, p<.001), and the explanatory power was 41 %. In Model 2, empathic ability, perceived stress, and resilience were added as independent variables. When including the dependent variables, the factors that most influenced adjustment to college life were perceived stress (β=-.37, p<.001), major satisfaction-satisfied (β=.36, p<.001), health status-healthy (β=.25, p<.001), gender-male (β=.10, p=.015), and resilience (β=.10, p=.029). Model 2 was statistically significant (F=17.65, p<.001), and the explanatory power was 56 %. Conclusion : We found that gender, major satisfaction, health status, perceived stress, and resilience affected adjustment to college life among nursing students who had experienced the COVID-19 pandemic. To increase their ability to adjust to college life, a gender-specific intervention program should be developed that can improve the students' health status, major satisfaction and resilience, and reduce their perceived stress.

  • This is a convergence study to investigate the factors affecting the psychological happiness of leisure sports participants(social baseball club) and to present a strategy for effective program development. The subjects of this study were 151 participants of social baseball clubs in J-do area and collected data by self-reported questionnaire. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The results of this study were the explanatory power was 54.1% with psychological happiness, quality of life, self-efficacy. As a result, it was confirmed that strengthening interpersonal relationship ability, positive reinforcement of self-efficacy, and quality of life were important for improvement of psychological happiness. and in the future, it is necessary to study repeatedly to confirm the influence of psychological through objective measurement.
