Difference between Gifted and Regular High School Students in Mathematical Thinking Ability (고등학교 수학영재와 일반학생의 수학적 사고력의 비교)

  • In this study, the instrument of mathematical thinking ability tests were considered, and the differences between gifted and regular high school students in the ability were investigated by the test. The instrument consists of 9 items, and verified its quality due to reliability. Participants were 353 regular and 252 gifted high school students from tenth grade. As a result, not only organizing ability of information but also ability of space perception and visualization and intuitive insight ability could be the characteristics of the mathematical giftedness.

The Role and Responsibilities of Coordinators in Korean Gifted Classes by Examining the Coordinators of Foreign Gifted Programs (외국 영재교육 프로그램 코디네이터의 역할을 통해 고찰한 한국 영재학급 업무 담당자의 역할과 대안)

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the role and responsibilities of coordinators for gifted classes in Korean schools, by examining the role and responsibilities, and qualifications of coordinators' at gifted classes in America and England. To do this, first, we examine the tasks and role of Korean gifted classes in elementary and secondary schools. Then we look into the coordinators of gifted programs of public schools and university programs in America and England. The coordinators of America and England are experts in gifted programs who have understanding and knowledge on gifted education, and they work for everything regarding gifted programs, such as designing the gifted education program, dealing documents regarding gifted programs, and assisting school personnel in the identification, development, teaching and evaluation of gifted students. The coordinators are the most important and core person in gifted programs. However, in Korean school, the role of coordinators is one of the school tasks of which any teacher has to take charge and there is no regulation on the qualification of coordinators. Therefore we suggest to set up the regulations of qualification, role and responsibilities of gifted programs' coordinators, by understanding that the role of coordinators is important.

A Comparison of Perfectionism, Academic stress and Learning flow Between Gifted and Non-gifted in Elementary School Children (초등 영재학생과 일반학생의 완벽주의, 학업스트레스 및 학습몰입 비교)

  • This study compared the difference of perfectionism, academic stress, learning flow, analyzed the perfectionism impact on academic stress and learning flow between gifted and non-gifted in Elementary school children. The subjects of this study were 100 fifth grade gifted students and 100 ordinary students who showed academic achievement of the same level. According to the results of this study, gifted students showed higher self-oriented perfectionism and socially prescribed perfectionism than general students. Both gifted and general students, the higher socially prescribed perfectionism, the more increased academic stress increased. And the higher self-oriented perfectionism, the more increased learning flow. Gifted and general student's learning flow is high when self-oriented perfectionism is low and academic stress.

  • It is very essential to recruit professional teachers for Gifted Education because the main goals of this school are focusing on the highly advanced technical science fields, enhancing self study and research environment which leads to develop self-directed learning and creative learning. The purpose of this study is to improve of the current Gifted Education Action Law For Teacher Recruitment in Gifted Education. The results of this study are follows; 1. Establishment of Standards for Teachers' Qualification in Gifted Education To recruit professional teachers, they are studied to use the current Gifted Education Action Law and to converse the legal position of Busan Science Academy 2. Developing Professionalism and Improving Conditions of Employment To gualify for Gifted Education, it is necessary to developing professionalism and improving conditions of employment. To provide long-term training and a sabbatical year for research. To make able teachers teach in a school longer than other teachers if teachers agree to it. To pay research funds for teachers for gifted education. To give advantage for gifted teachers in promotion. As the result of study, it has been systemized the standards of recruiting qualified teachers of the Science School for Gifted, has been proposed the ways of developing specialty of teachers and working conditions.

A Comparative Study on Gifted Students' Characteristics Based on the Diverse Identification Methods for the Gifted Education Program at Each Elementary School (단위학교 영재학급 선발방식에 따른 영재 특성 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore a more useful identification method by comparing diverse selection approaches for the gifted education programs at the each elementary school. Diverse selection methods examined in the study include 'written examinations', 'mixed evaluation', 'achievement test scores', and 'self-recommendation'. For the study, each identification group's gifted students' characteristics, such as intelligence, creativity, motivation and self-regulated learning strategies, were compared. The subjects of the study were a total of 594 gifted and normal students. The results of this study were as follows: First, there were no statistically significant differences between students in each gifted education class and gifted students who belong to the regional gifted education programs which are considered higher level of gifted education programs. While, there were statistically significant differences between two groups of gifted students and general students in all aspects examined, such as intelligence, creativity, motivation and learning strategies. In addition and most importantly, diverse identification method utilized in each school showed differences in gifted students' characteristics. Especially, students who were selected through the self-recommendation showed significantly lower intelligence, creativity, motivation and learning strategies. The implications of the study related to the identification and education for the gifted at each elementary school were discussed in depth.

An Analysis of the Interpersonal Competence of Science-Gifted Students in School and Science-Gifted Education Institute (학교와 과학영재교육원에서의 과학영재들의 대인관계역량 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the interpersonal competence of science-gifted students in groups of people with different characteristics. We examined the interpersonal competence and characteristics of students in school and in science-gifted education institute. The subjects of this study were 72 students in a university-based science-gifted education institute. We used a mixed method of both qualitative and quantitative research. The questionnaires were used for quantitative research and the narrative contents and interviews were analyzed for qualitative research. We compared their competence in school with those of gifted education institute students through questionnaire, narrative contents, and interviews. The interpersonal competence questionnaire consisted of 46 questions and their own descriptions about interpersonal experiences in school and in science-gifted education institute. In an interview, they explained their answers on the questionnaires with more details. As a result, generally, the science-gifted students evaluated their interpersonal competence higher in school than those in gifted education institute. They showed different interpersonal characteristics in schools and in science-gifted education institutes. This implies implications for the social meaning of the science-gifted education institutes.

Comparison of Cognitive Development, and Logical Thinking Formation Levels between Elementary Gifted Students and General Students (초등 영재와 일반 학생의 인지발달 및 논리적 사고력 형성 수준 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate cognitive development and logical thinking formation levels of elementary gifted students and to compare with those of elementary regular students. For this purpose, 79 gifted elementary school students and 114 regular elementary school students in Kyunggi Province were participated, and GALT(Group Assessment of Logical Test) was administered to them. The results obtained in this study were as follows. First, the logical thinking scores of elementary gifted students were significantly higher than general students'(p<.05). Comparing the distribution of cognitive development level, elementary gifted students showed higher ratio in formal operation and lower ratio in concrete operation compared to the general students. It was interpreted that the cognitive development of gifted students preceded general students'. Second, analyzing according to the grade of elementary gifted students, logical thinking scores were significantly different between 5th graders and 6th graders(p<.05). Compared to 5th graders, logical thinking and formal operation ratio of 6th gifted graders showed significantly higher. The scores of four logical thinking areas except for conservational logic and correlational logic of 6th gifted graders showed significantly higher than 5th gifted graders'. Both 5th and 6th graders showed the highest formation ratio in combinational logic, and the lowest ratio in correlational logic. Third, logical thinking scores of gifted students according to gender did not show a significant difference(p>.05). The gifted boys reached formal operation more than gifted girls, but stayed more in the concrete operation. There was gender difference in correlational logic. The gifted girls showed significantly higher than gifted boys in correlational logic(p<.05).

The Effects of Personality Education Programs of the Moral Judgement of Science gifted Elementary School Students (인성교육 프로그램이 초등과학영재의 도덕 판단력에 미치는 효과)

  • The characteristics of gifted children includes a non-cognitive characteristics and cognitive characteristics. Until now, the instruction for the affective domain of gifted children have been treated lightly compared to the cognitive instruction. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of personality education programs of the moral judgement of science-gifted elementary school students, and which implied that the 6 large virtues of human-centered relationship are 'honesty, commitment, forgiveness, responsible, caring, and owns' was applied to the science-gifted elementary school students for 4 weeks. Then, it was investigated whether there are differences in gender effects and the personality education program's effectiveness through the moral judgment test KDIT. The results of this study are as follows. First, the personality education program was found to be effective to improve the moral judgment of the gifted students. Second, the difference between groups of female students and male students in science gifted elementary school was not significant.

Exploration on the Elements of Teacher's Professionalism in Gifted Education (영재교육 교사 전문성의 구성요소 탐색 연구)

  • It has been said that the level of teacher professionalism determines the quality of education. The same notion allies for gifted education. Therefore, exploration of teacher professionalism in gifted education may provide fundamental bases for raising the quality of gifted education. In this study, first, literature review was conducted to extract elements of teacher professionalism in gifted education and a survey instrument was developed to find out categories of those elements and differences of teacher perception to professionalism at school levels and subject areas of gifted education. Research subjects included 212 teachers who participated in 2005 KEDI teacher training program of gifted education, 60 hour-clock introductory program and 232 teachers who participated in 2005 KEDI teacher training program of gifted education, 120 hour-clock enrichment program. It was found that elements of teacher professionalism in gifted education were categorized into knowledge-based, abilitybased and context-based. It was also found that secondary school teachers' perception to knowledge-based professionalism was significantly higher than those at elementary and science teachers' perception to ability-based and context-based professionalism was significantly higher than mathematics teachers. The research findings may provide insights for better teacher training program in gifted education as well as gifted education policies.
