  • The thermal stress intensity factors (TSIF's) for the cusp cracks such as hypocycloid crack, symmetric airfoil crack and symmetric lip crack are determined by using Bogdanoff's complex variable approaches in plane thermoplasticity. The results are expressed in terms of the periodic functions of the direction of uniform heat flow. The TSIF's are shown to be sensitive to both the direction of uniform heat flow and be thermal boundary conditions. It is also shown that Fourence's solutions for an insulated circular hole and Sih's solutions for an insulated Griffith crack are derived from the results of the stress and displacement fields for the hypocycloid crack and the TSIF's for the various cusp cracks, respectively.

  • Effect of flow uniformity on the reaction characteristics of a catalytic combustor for high temperature fuel cell system has been experimentally investigated in the present study. One of the most important factor in designing catalytic combustion is to avoid hot spot in catalysts. In this regard, it is very important to secure flow uniformity of combustor inlet. A couple of perforated plates were applied at the front of catalyst region as flow uniformity device with minimal pressure drop. Results show that the velocity and temperature profile became more uniform when applying the flow uniformity device. CO and $CH_4$ emissions at the combustor exit were decreased and the average exit temperature was slightly increased with the flow uniformity device.

  • The SWTR(Surface Water Treatment Rule) requires achieving removal 99.9% Giardia and 99.99% Virus. To remove Giardia and Virus, disinfection process is essential process. CT is important index for Disinfection performance. CT value is expressed by CXT. C is represented by disinfection concentration and T is represented by $T_{10}$ which means 90% contact time in clearwell. To improve Disinfection performance, it is desirable to increase $T_{10}$. Primary factor affected $T_{10}$ is flow Pattern. Because guide wall change that flow pattern is uniform, we have installed guide wall to increase $T_{10}$. In this paper, we have performed numerical analysis for clearwell installed symmetric guide wall and center divided guide wall using CFD. We have analyzed flow pattern and $T_{10}$ in each clearwell. And. we compare symmetric guide wall with center divided guide wall in flow pattern and $T_{10}$.

  • Flow separation of recirculation zone by increasing of flow and change of its direction at confluence results in backwater due to conveyance reduction. The hydraulic characteristics of flow separation are analysed by experimental results of flow ratios of tributary and main streams and approaching angles. The boundary of flow separation by dimensionless length and width is defined by the streamline of zero and this definition agrees well to the existing investigation. Because flow separation doesn't appear in small flow ratio and approaching angle of $30^{\circ}$, the equation of flow separation with flow ratio and approaching angle is provided. In flow separation consideration and comparing with previous results, the existing equations of dimensionless length and width ratios by function of approaching angle, flow ratio, and downstream Froude number are modified and also contraction coefficient and shape factor are analysed. Dimensionless length and width ratios are proportional to the flow ratio and approaching angle. In analysis of water surface profiles, the backwater effects are proportional to the flow ratio and approaching angle and the magnitude at outside wall is greater than that of inside wall of main stream. The length, $X_l$ from the beginning of confluence to downstream of uniform flow, where the depth is equal to uniform depth, is characterized by width of stream, flow ratio, approaching angle, and contraction coefficient. The ratios between maximum water depth by backwater and minimum depth at separation are analysed.

  • Wave energy is dissipated mainly by friction on the seabed until the waves reach the surf zone. Many researchers have investigated the mechanism of wave friction and the bottom shear stress induced by wave motion at a certain point is now well estimated by introducing the wave friction factor related to the near bed velocity given by linear wave theory. The variation of wave energy or wave height over a long distance can be, however, estimated by an iteration process when the propagation of waves is strongly influenced by bed friction. In the present study simple semi-theoretical equation has been developed to compute the variation of wave height for the condition of wave propagation on a constant beach slope. The ratio of wave height is determined by the product of shoalng factor and wave height friction factor (frictional wave energy dissipation factor). The wave height estimated by the new equation is compared with the wave height estimated by the solution of numerical integration for the condition that the waves propagate on a constant slope.

  • With uniform heat generation within the wall of the cylinder placed in a cross flow, heat flows by conduction in the circumferential direction due to the asymmetric nature of the fluid flow around the perimeter of the cylinder. The circumferential heat flow affects the wall temperature distribution to such an extent that in some cases significantly different results may be obtained for geometrically similar surfaces. In the present investigation, the effects of circumferential wall heat conduction on local convective heat transfer is investigated for the case of forced convection around horizontal cylinder in cross flow of air. Two-dimensional temperature distribution $T_w$/(${\gamma}$,${\theta}$) is presented through the numerical analysis. The one-dimensional and two-dimensional solutions are in good agreement with experimental results of local heat transfer coefficients.

  • The goal of this work is to design and build an implantable artificial lung that can be inserted as a whole into a large vein in the body with the least effect on cardiovascular hemodynamics. The experimental results demonstrate that the pressure drop is not entirely related to viscosity effects. The friction factor decreases with an increase in the number of tied-hollow fibers at a constant Reynolds number A uniform flow pattern without stagnation is observed at all numbers of tied hollow fibers tested. The tied hollow fiber module, built in this study with 3 cm of outer diameter of module. 380 m of outer diameter of tied hollow fiber, and 700 number of tied hollow fiber with length of 60 cm, which shows a pressure drop of 13-16 mmHg, satisfies the required pressure drop qualifying 15 mmHg as an intravascular artificial lung.

  • It is still needed to study the effect of process conditions on the final properties of injection-molded parts for producing precision optical products. Especially, the optical anisotropy, i.e., birefringence, is a significant factor to affect the function of many optical components. In the present study we have focused on the effect of holding and compression processes on the birefringence remaining in the transparent disc by examining the gap-wise distribution of birefringence and extinction angle. As a result, two extra birefringence and extinction peaks near the center in thickness direction showed the effect of holding pressure, which came from the flow in packing stage. However, more uniform birefringence distribution than injection-only cases could be found in injection/compression cases. Depends on the process condition even the flow reversal could be found from the distribution of extinction angle. Finally, graphical representation of optical indicatrix was added for better understanding the final structure of injection-only and injection/compression cases.

  • The surface flatness of heteroepitaxially grown 3C-SiC thin films is a key factor affecting electronic and mechanical device applications. This paper describes the surface flatness of poly(polycrystalline) 3C-SiC thin films according to Ar flow rates and the geometric structures of reaction tube, respectively. The poly 3C-SiC thin film was deposited by APCVD (Atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition) at $1200^{\circ}C$ using HMDS (Hexamethyildisilane : $Si_2(CH_3)_6)$ as single precursor, and 1~10 slm Ar as the main flow gas. According to the increase of main carrier gas, surface fringes and flatness are improved. It shows the distribution of thickness is formed uniformly.

  • In this study, turbulent flows in a planar combustor which has a square rib-type flame holder are numerically investigated by Large Eddy Simulation(LES). Firstly, the flow fields with or without jet injection downstream of the flame-holder are examined using uniform inlet velocity. Comparison of the present LES results with experimental one shows a good agreement. Secondly, to investigate mixing of oxidizer(air) and fuel injected behind the flame holder, the scalar-transport equation is introduced and solved. From the instantaneous flow and scalar fields, complex and intense mixing phenomena between fuel and jet are observed. It is shown that the ratio of jet to blocked air velocity is an important factor to determine the flow structure. Especially, when the ratio is large enough, the fuel jet penetrates the main vortices shed from the flame holder, resulting in significant changes in the flow and scalar fields.
