  • This paper presents an improved group of energy functions reflecting generator damping effects for multi-machine power systems by using Center of Inertia (COI) formulation as an extension of the previous work. Since rotor angles at the Stable Equilibrium Point (SEP) of post-fault systems are generally calculated in COI, system transient energy can be found without assumption of infinite or slack bus, which is a crucial drawback of the absolute rotor angle frame approach. The developed energy functions have a structure preserving property with which it is very flexible to incorporate various models of power system components, especially various load and generator models. The proposed damping-reflected energy functions are applied to the Potential Energy Boundary Surface (PEBS) method, one of the direct methods. Numerical simulation of WSCC 9-bus shows that conservativeness of the PEBS method can be considerably reduced.

  • Two major obstacles in the utilization of electrical vehicles are their price and range. The collaboration of direct torque control (DTC) with induction motor (IM) is preferred for its low cost, easy implementation, and parameter independency. However, in terms of edges, the method has drawbacks, such as variable switching frequency and undesired current harmonic distortion. These drawbacks result in acoustic noise, reduced efficiency, and electromagnetic interference. A feed-forward approach for stator-flux-oriented DTC with space vector pulse-width modulation is presented in in this paper. The outcome of the proposed method is low current harmonic distortion with fixed switching frequency while preserving the torque performance and simple application feature of basic DTC. The method is applicable to existing and forthcoming IM drive systems via software adaptation. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed by simulation and experimental results.

  • In this paper, aging diagnosis method of CV cable was investigated. CV cable was designed for the sake of using during 30 years. Therefore it was important to evaluate the cable's remaining life because CV cable used for power transmission line since 1970's. CV cable was mainly installed at the underground owing to the environmental condition. If the cable accident occurred, it needs the much time for the accident recovery and the much damage at the industrial activity. therefore, this paper should study the direct leakage current method, a sort of the cables'aging test method.

  • This paper presents a design method of the wavelet neural network(WNN) controller based on a direct adaptive control scheme for the intelligent control of chaotic systems. The conventional control methods such as optimal control, adaptive control and robust control may not be feasible when an explicit, faithful mathematical model cannot be constructed. Therefore, an intelligent control system that is an on-line trained WNN controller based on a direct adaptive control method is proposed to control chaotic systems whose mathematical models are not available. The gradient-descent method is used for training a wavelet neural network controller. Finally, the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed control method is demonstrated with applications to the chaotic system.

  • Jaw crusher is a device that breaks rock collected from mines or quarries to produce aggregates of the size desired by user. A representative method for measuring load is to measure them by attaching force sensors directly to the part where the load is generated. However, the direct method has many limitations such as high-impact loads generation in equipment or space constraints, sensor capacities and costs. Therefore, Transfer Path Analysis (TPA) was used to indirectly measure impact loads by attaching acceleration sensors. In this study, both direct and TPA methods were used to measure the impact load of Jaw crusher. This study finally quantifies the impact of the load generated by the Jaw crusher using direct method and TPA method, and comparing the impact load measured calculated the derive the error rate.

  • A direct boundary element method(DBEM) is widely applied for various acoustic wave problems. But this method has numerically non-unique solutions around the eigenfrequencies of the interior Dirichlet problem for the region enveloped with the acoustic boundary. A CHIEF method had been generally adopted to resolve the non-uniqueness problem and a new technique called ICA-Ring method has been suggested recently. In this paper, the characteristics of two techniques for avoiding the non-uniqueness of DBEM are examined and numerical codes embodying both techniques are developed. Numerical calculations are also carried out for an uniformly pulsating sphere, of which the results are investigated by including the comparisons with theoretical solutions.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify differences in measurement methods for blood pressure (Direct measurement, HP automatic indirect measurement, and SE 7000 Korean made indirect measurement), and to evaluate the clinical trial of the Korean made automatic indirect blood pressure measurement. Material & Methods: From June, 1999 to February, 2000, fifty five consecutive patients were randomized into hypertension group (n=20), normotension group (n=20), and hypotension group (n= 15). Measuring blood pressure by indirect methods (HP NIBP M 1008B and SE 7000 NIBP Korean made) was done simultaneously in the same arm with arterial line for direct blood pressure measurement (HP M1006A). The procedures were repeated ten times at intervals of 2 minutes. Statistical analysis was Performed using SPSS (version 8.0 for windows) software package. Values were expressed as means and standard deviation and means were compared using t-test. Statistical significance was considered present with a p value less than 0.05. Results: In the hypertension group and noromotension group, the disparity between HP direct measurement and indirect SE 7000 NIBP did not show any differences compared to the disparity between HP direct measurement and indirect HP NIBP. In the hypotension group, the disparity in the diastolic pressure between HP direct measurement and indirect SE 7000 NIBP was significantly different compared to the disparity between HP direct measurement and indirect HP NIBP (p<0.001), however, disparities in systolic pressure did not showed any differences. Conclusion: Direct blood pressure measurement (HP M1006A) can be replaced with indirect blood pressure measurements (HP NIBP M 1008B & SE 7000 NIBP) in normotension and hypertension patients. Korean made indirect measurement was found to be more accurate compared to HP indirect measurement in hypotension Patients, but more study is needed.

  • This paper presents an effective memory access method for a high-speed data transfer on mobile systems using a direct memory access controller that considers the characteristics of a multi-port memory controller. The direct memory access controller has an integrated channel management function to control multiple direct memory access channels. The channels are physically separated and operate independently from each other. Experimental results show that the proposed direct memory access method improves the transfer performance by up to 72% and 69% on read and write transfer cycles, respectively. The total number of transfer cycles of the proposed method is 63% less than in a commercial method under 4-channel access.

  • Measurement of cardiac output by thermodilution method is easy to perform and can be repeated at very short intervals and offers a number of theoretical and practical advantages. The purpose of this paper is to reevaluate the accuracy and reproducibility of the thermodilution cardiac output by comparing the results with those obtained by the direct Fick technique. From January through April 1981 [4 months], 26 simultaneous cardiac output measurements were made using thermodilution and direct Fick methods in 12 patients in the intensive care unit of Severance Hospital following open heart surgery. The average age of the patients was $34.8{\pm}12.0$ [SD] years [range; 17-57 years]. For cardiac output determination by thermodilution technique [$CO_TD$], a Swan-Ganz Thermodilution Catheter, Model 93A-131-7F [Edwards Laboratories], a Cardiac Output Computer, Model 9520A, and Strip Chart Recorder, Model 9810 [Edwards Laboratories] were used. For the determination of cardiac output by direct Fick principle [$CO_Fick$], a Van Slyke Manometric Apparatus [Thomas] for the measurements of arteriovenous oxygen content difference and a Collin`s Respirometer with Kymograph for the measurement of oxygen consumption were used. The correlation between the simultaneously measured $CO_TD$ and $CO_Fick$ was found to be $CO_Fick$ = 0.95.$CO_TD$ + 0.1073, [r= 0.9777, P < 0.001 ]. For 26 double or triple determinations of $CO_TD$, the values ranged from 1.77 L/min to 6.66 L/min, with a reproducibility of 2.18%. The maximum difference of $CO_TD$ for $CO_Fick$ was between +11.99% and -12,99% [$Mean{\pm}SD$ = $6.07{\pm}3.97$%]. Measurement of cardiac output by thermodilution method provides a simple, rapid, reproducible and highly accurate method for multiple cardiac output measurements suitable for use at the bedside. • In this paper, a direct adaptive tracking controller based Lyapunov method is designed for a wheeled mobile robots. A wheeled mobile robots have three degrees of freedom and two control variables. Therefore, it is difficult to control a mobile robot using the general linear control. We introduce two kinds of Lyapunov function for the design of the controller and verify the controller. A mobile robots using the designed adaptive direct tracking controller is well-behaved and is easily implemented.
