Development of the Calculus Supplement Learning Program for university students (문과 출신 학생을 위한 대학 미적분학 보충학습 프로그램 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop an effective Calculus Supplement Learning Program for university students who are from liberal arts and investigate how the program affects their achievement and attitude in mathematics. we analyzed their answer sheets and interview reports with qualitative methods. After adapting the program, students recognized that mathematical concepts and definitions were very important to study a college calculus. Also they picked up how to learn mathematics in college. Finally, we found that students could develop their abilities of proof, problem solving, and logical thinking through the program.

  • We discuss the effect of ability grouping calculus courses based upon student's proficiency of the subject and their collective examination of midterms and finals among mid-level and low-level classes. We assess incoming freshmen at Seoul National University of Technology(SNUT) of their proficiency in calculus and assign them to the appropriate levels within the course(i.e., high-level, mid-level, low-level). We found that this was beneficial to both students and instructors. Instructors can easily determine the pace in which each class should be kept, and students can quickly adapt to the learning environment.

Theoretical statistics education using mathematical softwares (이론통계학 교육에서 수학 소프트웨어의 활용)

  • Theoretical statistics is a calculus based course. However, there are limitations to learn theoretical statistics when students do not know enough calculus techniques. Mathematical softwares (computer algebra systems) that enable calculus manipulations help students understand statistical concepts, by avoiding the difficulties of calculus. In this paper, we introduce mathematical software such as Maxima and Wolfram Alpha. To foster statistical concepts in theoretical statistics education, we present three examples that consist of mathematical derivations using wxMaxima and statistical simulations using R.

  • Many studies indicate the emerging crisis of education of calculus even though the emphasis of calculus have been widely recognized. In our classrooms, the education of calculus also has been faced with its bounds. Most instructions of calculus is too much emphasis on the algebraic approach, thus students solve mathematical problems without truly understanding the underlying concept. The purpose of this study is to develop mathematization teaching and learning materials and methods in caculus based on the mathematization teaching and learning theories by Freudenthal and the variability principles of conceptual learning by Dienes, In order to this purpose, first, we analyzed the high school mathematics II textbook of 7th curriculum in Korea. Second, we developed mathematization teaching and learning materials and methods in highschool calculus. Consequently, the following conclusions have been drawn: we have reorganized and reconstructed the context problem in calculus based on concepts of tangent line and instantaneous rate of change.

  • This study analyses the cross-application system, one of the diversified college admission processes, based on the entrance examination system by the reorganization of the education curriculum. In addition, this study suggests an improvement direction of mathematics education for students who cross-apply by comparing and analysing academic results in Calculus for those students entering universities through the cross-application system.

  • In this study, we introduced the case of college calculus course for vocational high school graduates with coding. We suggest this case as an alternative to overcome mathematics anxiety. Contents, python/SageMath codes, and textbook for this course, which help students to easily and quickly review middle and high school mathematics, were newly developed by authors. Due to the use of codes and chat with classmates in learning management system, most of the students who took this course reported that they no longer felt anxious in complex mathematics problems, had a full understanding of calculus concepts, could solve almost problems in any calculus textbooks with or without codes, and could explain calculus concepts to other students in their own words. In this way if mathematics and coding is properly used in mathematics education, it helps students with weak mathematical backgrounds or mathematics anxiety to restore confidence in mathematics in college. This could be applicable in secondary mathematics education.

  • This paper was developmented for teaching of claculus in college with multimedia contents. We focused the point of lecture materials with internet network in mathematics class. We used the 3-D graphics and Java applet with HTML for making contents. We hope this contents is used in calculus class at university.

  • Recently, many authors have obtained several hypergeometric identities involving hypergeometric functions of one and multi-variables such as the Appell's functions and Horn's functions. In this paper, we obtain several new transformations suitably by applying the fractional calculus operator to these hypergeometric identities, which was introduced recently by Tremblay.

  • In this paper, we present a practical and essential method of using team projects for calculus. We, specifically, take into account the team project that calculate the volume of lung represented on CT scan images. We have demonstrated that the process of analyzing the images in a team project encourage studying numerical methods of integration for calculus. Also, we have used various technological programs(MATLAB, MATHEMATICA, MS Excel) to solve the team project.

Construction of function graphs through turtle motion (거북 행동을 통한 함수 그래프 구성)

  • There are different perspectives on a function graph. For instance, a parabola is defined by movement of a ball in physics and by quadratic function in mathematics. This study deals with the turtle motion, which is local and intrinsic, and the construction of function graphs with mathematical experiments in a microworld. This paper concerns with a function graph which is in the curriculum or in the history of mathematics. In view of pre-calculus, we introduce activities of mathematization about formalizing of length and area of function graphs without knowledge of calculus.
