  • This paper presents a 5.8 GHz PLL using high-speed ring oscillator for WLAN. The proposed ring oscillator has been designed using the negative skewed delay scheme and for differential mode operation. Therefore, the oscillator is insensitive to power-supply-injected noise, and it has the merit of low 1/f noise because tail current sources are not used. The output frequency ranges from 5.13 to 7.04 GHz with the control voltage varing from 0 to 1.8 V. The proposed PLL circuits have been designed, simulated, and proved using 0.18 um 1.8 V TSMC CMOS library. At the operation frequency of 5.8 GHz, the locking time is 2.5 us and the simulated power consumption is 59.9 mW.

Design of the each module like VCO, prescaler, 1/N divider, ${\Delta}-{\Sigma}$ modulator, and common circuits of the PLL has been optimized to obtain high speed and low noise performance. Especially, the VCO has been designed with NP core structure and 13 steps cap-bank to get high speed, low noise, and wide band tuning range. The output frequencies of the implemented synthesizer is 1483MHz~2017MHz, the phase noise of the synthesizer is -98.63dBc/Hz at 100KHz offset and -122.05dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset.

  • We designed asynchronous event logic library with 0.25um CMOS technology and interface chip for heterogeneous system with high-speed asynchronous FIFO operating at 1.6GHz. Optimized asynchronous standard cell layouts and Verilog models are designed for top-down design methodology. A Method for mitigating a design bottleneck when it comes to tolerate clock skew is described. This communication scheme using clock control circuits, which is used for the free of synchronization failures, is analyzed and implemented. With clock control circuit and FIFO, high-speed communication between synchronous modules operating at different clock frequencies or with asynchronous modules is performed. The core size of implemented high-speed 32bit-interface chip for heterogeneous system is about $1.1mm{\times}1.1mm$.

  • This paper presents the method of improving the data rate and BER in the inductive coupling link using a BPM signaling method. A complementary switching transmitter is used to remove invalid glitches at transmitted data, and the concept of pre-distortion is introduced to optimize received data. Also, an integrating receiver is used to increase the sampling margin and equalizing transistors are added in the pre-charge path of the integrator and comparator for high frequency operation. The transceiver designed with a 0.13 um CMOS technology operates at 2.4 Gb/s and consumes 5.99 mW from 1.2 V power supply.

  • Due to the differential and low voltage swing, Low Voltage Differential Signaling(LVDS) has been widely used for high speed data transmission with low power consumption. This paper proposes new LVDS I/O interface circuits for more than 1.3 Gb/s operation. The LVDS receiver proposed in this paper utilizes a sense amp for the pre-amp instead of a conventional differential pre-amp. The proposed LVDS allows more than 1.3 Gb/s transmission speed with significantly reduced driver output voltage. Also, in order to further improve the power consumption and noise performance, this paper introduces an inductance impedance matching technique which can eliminate the termination resistor. A new form of unfolded impedance matching method has been developed to accomplish the impedance matching for LVDS receivers with a sense amplifier as well as with a differential amplifier. The proposed LVDS I/O circuits have been extensively simulated using HSPICE based on 0.35um TSMC CMOS technology. The simulation results show improved power gain and transmission rate by ${\sim}12%$ and ${\sim}18%$, respectively.

To get good performance of speed and noise super dynamic circuits was used, and to get variable-N division ratio MOSFET switching circuits was used. Especially to solve narrow bandwidth problem of the dynamic circuits load resistance value of unit divider block was varied. Simulation results of the designed circuit shows very fast and wide operation characteristics as 5~26GHz frequency range.

  • Based on a new search strategy using circuit simulation and simulated annealing with local search, a technique for design automation of high-performance operational amplifiers is proposed. For arbitrary circuit topology and performance specifications, through discrete optimization of a cost function with discrete design variables the design of operational amplifiers is performed. A special-purpose circuit simulator and some heuristics are used to reduce the design time. Through the design of a low-power high-speed fully differential CMOS operational amplifier usable in smart sensors and 10-b 25-MS/s pipelined A/D converters, it has been demonstrated that a design tool developed using the proposed technique can be used for designing high-performance operational amplifiers with less design knowledge and less design effort.

  • A new analytical VLSI interconnect delay model is presented and its accuracy is experimentally verified. In the model, the transmission line parameter variations due to skin effect, proximity effect, and silicon substrate effect are taken into account. That is, the circuit model of the interconnect line that includes these effects is newly developed and analyzed. For the model verification, test patterns combined the coplanar structure with microstrip were designed by using 0.35${\mu}m$ CMOS process technology. It is shown that the accuracy of the model is less than about 10% error.
