The subjects of this study were 397 teachers working at child care centers. The results of this study were as follows. First, differences in the organization effectiveness of child care centers were detected according to teachers' age, career, type of child care center where they were affiliated, and marriage status. Second, the relative effects of the teachers' communication ability and teacher efficacy on the organizational effectiveness of early-childhood educational institutions differed significantly according to each sub-factor; teachers' communication ability's sub-factors - response, analysis, and evaluation - and teacher efficacy's sub-factors - general efficacy and personal efficacy - had partial effects on the organizational effectiveness of child care centers. Of these, personal efficacy had the greatest effects on all sub-factors of organizational effectiveness. This study is significant since it identifies the variables that could affect the organizational effectiveness of child care centers.

  • Several reports describe antimicrobial-resistance transfer among children and the community in outbreak situations, but transfer between a child and a caregiver has not been examined in child care facilities under normal circumstances. We investigated the transfer of antimicrobial-resistance genes, resistant bacteria, or both among healthy children and teachers. From 2007 to 2009, 104 Escherichia coli isolates were obtained from four teachers and 38 children in a child care center. Twenty-six cephem-resistant isolates were obtained from children in 2007 and 2008. In 2009, cephem-resistant isolates were detected in children as well as a teacher. Nalidixic acid-resistant isolates from the same teacher for 3 years showed low similarity (<50%) to each other. However, an isolate from a teacher in 2007 and another from a child in 2008 showed high similarity (87%). Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis revealed 100% similarity for four isolates in 2007 and one isolate in 2008, and also similarity among seven isolates carrying the virulence gene (CNF1). This study yielded the following findings: (1) a gene for extended-spectrum ${\beta}$-lactamase was transferred from a child to other children and a teacher; (2) a nalidixic acid-resistant isolate was transferred from a teacher to a child; and (3) a virulent bacterium was transferred between children.

  • The goal of this research was to clarify how a child's maladjustment affects the teacher-child relationship and leads to teaching stress. Subjects were 178 teacher-child pairs in kindergartens or day care centers. The child was 3 to 5-years-old and perceived by its teacher as having maladjusted behavior. Teachers responded to the Index of Teaching Stress(Greene, Abidin, & Kmetz, 1997) and the Student-Teacher Relationships Scale(Pianta 1991). The maladjusted behaviors observed by teachers were correlated with each other. ADHD was the biggest problem perceived by teachers. Most fields of maladjusted children's behaviors caused stress to teachers except those of intellectual deficit and academic Problems. Frustration peaked during the teaching process. More severely maladjusted behaviors resulted in greater conflict in teacher-child relationships.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the current status of pre-service curriculums for child care teachers at universities and colleges in Korea. To accomplish this, a survey was implemented to gather the lists of courses from each department training pre-service child care teachers. A total of 225 departments at universities and colleges across Korea participated in the survey. The results showed that the 37 different courses offered for child-care teacher licensure were different by school type (university or college) and major. Departments in colleges with specific majors such as early childhood education and social welfare offer courses that are also required for other certificates, including kindergarten teachers or social workers, so pre-service child care teachers may not have the opportunity to take courses specifically designed for their specific teaching needs or interests. Accordingly, there may be a restricted number of courses from which to choose during pre-service training periods. Based on the findings from this study, several political implications for improving child-care teacher professionalism were suggested.
