  • In this paper, we present an Example-based Dialogue System for English conversation tutoring. It aims to provide intelligent one-to-one English conversation tutoring instead of old fashioned language education with static multimedia materials. This system can understand poor expressions of students and it enables green hands to engage in a dialogue in spite of their poor linguistic ability, which gives students interesting motivation to learn a foreign language. And this system also has educational functionalities to improve the linguistic ability. To achieve these goals, we have developed a statistical natural language understanding module for understanding poor expressions and an example-based dialogue manager with high domain scalability and several effective tutoring methods.

  • The purpose of the study is to investigate the students' learning motive through the application of the learner-centered program Creative Teaching Technique(CTT) conducted by undergraduate school of Medical Record Information Management(MRIM), and to improve learning from the results. A questionnaire survey was carried out that started March to June 2013 among the sixty freshmen college students from the Health Administration Department who participated in the CTT during the 12 weeks training. The main results are as follows. The subjects' cognitive results form CTT were relativiely higher in 'increased voluntary participation(4.03)', 'improved concentration(4.00)', 'increased understanding(3.97)' in order. The effects of the tools used in CTT were higher as well in 'two members in a tem(4.08)', 'three-dimensional tools(4.03)' and 'quiz cards(3.95)' in order. While undergoing CTT, the learners considered reviewing repeatedly the content before starting and finishing as mostly helpful. Concludingly, this learner-centered CTT program identified having positive effects on their participation, concentration and understanding. To maximize the learning effects, development and activating a systematic, continuous and supportive program like this CTT is highly recommended.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the phenomena that occurred when the students were practicing flip-learning lessons and to present the good points and the unsatisfactory points to improve the students' learning pleasure. Therefore, it is aimed to provide the basic data and the advantages and disadvantages which are needed to apply the flip learning method which is newly emerging recently to the university instruction. The method of this study was a questionnaire survey to understand the perception of flip learning. Based on the results of this study, the following conclusions are presented. First, the experience of flip learning instruction was first encountered by 50% of college students. Second, the students showed a very low tendency in practicing the flip learning instruction(video watching) the instructor intended. Third, college students have a habit of learning that they are not ready for pre-study of the subject. Fourth, the perception of flip learning lesson through the provision of video was highly positive. Fifthly, flip learning lessons have the advantage of being able to learn regardless of the time and place that they have, but they are not actively involved if they are not actually reflected in the test or grades. In conclusion, it was found that college students became accustomed to the incentive-style lessons due to the application of various learning techniques from elementary school age, making it difficult to participate in voluntary learning.

  • Education researchers have been continuously interested in the teacher's ability to design lessons and conducted various studies in order to improve the teacher's professionalism in determining the quality of school instruction. So, this study explored the change of instructional design through the lesson reflection of pre-service mathematics teachers who participated in practicum settings. As a result, in the lesson plan prepared by pre-service mathematics teachers, the motivation to induce learning in the introduction stage, to present the learning contents in the development stage, and to reconstruct the formative evaluation of the closing stage was the highest rate. And the categories of the reconstructed contents appeared intensively in terms of curriculum contents and teaching and learning methods. This result can be attributed to the lack of experience in designing and performing lessons by pre-service mathematics teachers, so it suggests that the opportunity to design and conduct classes that take into account the practical aspects of education should be provided in the preparation process for pre-service mathematics teachers.

  • In this study, to improve educational motivation and learning outcomes, a mobile app using game elements was developed, and the effect of its application in rebar work education was analyzed. Using the 4F(Figure out-Focus-Fun design-Finalize) process, which is a game development model, a mobile learning app for rebar work was developed that considers the characteristics of college students familiar with smartphone use, and the app was developed in a manner that utilizes game mechanics such as learning missions and points to stimulate a learner's interest and improve educational motivation. The results show that the proposed app for rebar work is positively evaluated in terms of interface style, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, perceived enjoyment, attitude toward using, and intention to use. Therefore, it can be concluded that using the learning game app for rebar work in classes can contribute to improving a learner's performance in various aspects.

  • This study focused on the practical research needed to improve elementary school science lesson plans. Specifically, a video clip-based pedagogical reasoning activity that included elementary student misconceptions was presented and the influences of this activity on preservice teachers' science lesson planning were assessed. First, the eight preservice teacher participants were asked to write a lesson plan for a dissolution and solution unit, after which a first semi-structured interview was conducted. Then, the participants participated in a video clip-based pedagogical reasoning activity. Based on the activity results, the participants revised their previously planned lessons, and second semi-structured interviews were conducted. The data from the preservice teachers' lesson plans and interview transcripts were analyzed using a constant comparative method to investigate the lesson plan changes. It was found that after the video clip-based pedagogical reasoning activity, the preservice teacher tightened the activity or changed the material to understand the students' thinking processes. In addition, they supplemented their goals and assessment criteria to accommodate the diverse students' thinking. Some also specified motivational strategies that considered student interests, motivation, and possible misconceptions. However, some preservice teachers still set goals that did not sufficiently account for student misconceptions and some planned the student assessments based only on the learning goals rather than the students' thinking. The few preservice teachers were able to develop motivational strategies that considered interest, motivation, and misconceptions. The preservice teachers claimed that they had difficulty predicting the misconceptions and connecting these to the lesson content. Discussions were then held to assist the preservice teachers to consider possible student misconceptions when planning their lessons.

  • For a systematic analysis of the characteristics according to the counseling type, this study was about what type of counseling is the largest number of cases that three researchers participated. The main types of counseling for paid/leaved students were identified, and the characteristics of counseling types by admission type were analyzed. A total of 185 counseling cases conducted in 2018 and 2019 were analyzed by technical statistics and analysis by seven types of counseling(emotional and personality, academic motivation, learning method/strategy, family relationship, career and major choice, self-growth motivation) and analyzed to confirm the counseling needs for each student characteristic(entrance type, grade, gender, and academic changes(paid, leave of absence experience)) according to the characteristics of the students. Through this study, it was confirmed that the number of counseling was the highest in the order of "learning methods and strategies," "emotion and personality," and "self-growth motivation," and in particular, it was confirmed that the counseling rate of freshman and sophomore students was high. Most of the students who experienced paid/leave of absence were counseling on "emotional and personality" and "learning methods/ strategies." Through this study, academic-related programs are required for freshman and sophomore students, and the necessity of improving and establishing a counseling system was confirmed in consideration of the characteristics of each type of student counseling. In addition, this study proposed the necessity of institutional support such as the group mentoring system for students with academic fluctuations.
