This paper introduces a direct-conversion CMOS RF transmitter for the IEEE 802.15.4 standard with a low-power high-gain up-conversion mixer designed in $0.18{\mu}m$ process. The designed RF DCT(Direct Conversion Transmitter) is composed of differential DAC(Digital to Analog Converter), passive low-pass filter, quadrature active mixer and drive amplifier. The most important characteristic in designing RF DCT is to satisfy the 2.4 GHz Zigbee standard in low power. The quadrature active mixer inside the proposed RF DCT provides enough high gain as well as sufficient linearity using a gain boosting technique. The measurement results for the proposed transmitter show very low power consumption of 7.8 mA, output power more than 0 dBm and ACPR (Adjacent Channel Power Ratio) of -30 dBc.

A novel post-linearization technique is proposed for CMOS cascode low noise amplifier (LNA). The technique uses dual common gate FETs one of which delivers the linear currents to a load and the other one sinks the $3^{rd}$ order intermodulation currents of output currents from the common source FET. Selective current branching can be implemented in $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process by using a thick oxide FET as an IM3 sinker with a normal FET as a linear current buffer. A differential LNA adopting this technique is designed at 2.14GHz. The measurement results show 11dBm IIP3, 15.5dB power gain and 2.85dB noise figure consuming 12.4mA from 1.8V power supply. Compared with the LNA with turning off the IM3 sinker, the proposed technique improves the IIP3 by 7.5 dB.
This paper introduces the design or parallel Pipeline high-speed analog-to-digital converter(ADC) for the high-resolution video applications which require very precise sampling. The overall architecture of the ADC consists of 4-channel parallel time-interleaved 10-bit pipeline ADC structure a]lowing 200MSample/s sampling speed which corresponds to 4-times improvement in sampling speed per channel. Key building blocks are composed of the front-end sample-and-hold amplifier(SHA), the dynamic comparator and the 2-stage full differential operational amplifier. The 1-bit DAC, comparator and gain-2 amplifier are used internally in each stage and they were integrated into single switched capacitor architecture allowing high speed operation as well as low power consumption. In this work, the gain of operational amplifier was enhanced significantly using negative resistance element. In the ADC, a delay line Is designed for each stage using D-flip flops to align the bit signals and minimize the timing error in the conversion. The converter has the power dissipation of 280㎽ at 3.3V power supply. Measured performance includes DNL and INL of +0.7/-0.6LSB, +0.9/-0.3LSB.

Chaotic OOK modulation method can be used in LDR(Low Data Rate) UWB systems. In this paper, UWB chaotic-OOK transmitter system is designed and verified using TSMC 0.18 um CMOS process. A transmitter system is composed of Quasi-chaotic signal generator, OOK Modulator, and driving amplifier. The traditional chaotic signal generators using analog feedback method is weak to process variation. In order to solve this problem, a quasi-chaotic signal generator using digital feedback technique is get wide band signal and OOK Modulator using T-type switching structure is used to enhance the isolation characteristic. A driving amplifier has differential to single structure to avoid an external balun for low cost communication. The measured output power spectrum of the transmitter meet the FCC regulation and the result of the modulation test at data rate of 20 Kbps, 200 Kbps, 2 Mbps, and 10 Mbps is conformed to LDR UWB system. It is shown that the transmitter in this paper can be used for the UWB chaotic-OOK system.
A 12-bit 10-MS/s pipeline analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is proposed for image processing applications. The proposed pipeline ADC consists of a sample and hold amplifier, three stages, a 3-bit flash analog-to-digital converter, and a digital error corrector. Each stage is operated by using a 4-bit flash ADC (FADC) and a multiplying digital-to-analog converter (MDAC). The proposed sample and hold amplifier increases the voltage gain using gain boosting for the ADC with high resolution. The proposed pipelined ADC is designed using a 180-nm CMOS process with a supply voltage of 1.8 and it has an effective number of bit (ENOB) of 10.52 bits at sampling rate of 10MS/s for a 1-Vpp differential sinusoidal analog input with frequency of 1 MHz. The measured ENOB is 10.12 bits when the frequency of the sinusoidal analog input signal is a Nyquist frequency of approximately 5 MHz.

This paper has proposed a multi-channel and wide gain-range baseband circuit blocks for the IEEE 802.15.4g MR-OFDM SUN systems. The proposed baseband circuit blocks consist of two negative-feedback VGAs, an active-RC 5th-order chebyshev low-pass-filter, and a DC-offset cancellation circuit. The proposed baseband circuit blocks provide 1 dB cut-off frequencies of 100 kHz, 200 kHz, 400 kHz, and 600 kHz respectively, and achieve a wide gain-range of +7 dB~+84 dB with 1 dB step. In addition, a DC-offset cancellation circuit has been adopted to mitigate DC-offset problems in direct-conversion receiver. Simulation results show a maximum input differential voltage of $1.5V_{pp}$ and noise figure of 42 dB and 37.6 dB at 5 kHz and 500 kHz, respectively. The proposed I-and Q-path baseband circuits have been implemented in $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS technology and consume 17 mW from a 1.8 V supply voltage.

In this paper, a low-power direct-conversion transmitter based on current-mode operation, which satisfies the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, is proposed and implemented in a $0.13{\mu}m$ CMOS technology. The proposed transmitter consists of DACs, LPFs, variable gain I/Q up-conversion mixer, a divide-by-two circuit with LO buffer, and a drive amplifier. By combining DAC, LPF, and variable gain I/Q up-conversion mixer with a simple current mirror configuration, the transmitter's power consumption is reduced and its linearity is improved. The drive amplifier is a cascode amplifier with gain controls and the 2.4GHz I/Q differential LO signals are generated by a divide-by-two current-mode-logic (CML) circuit with an external 4.8GHz input signal. The implemented transmitter has 30dB of gain control range, 0dBm of maximum transmit output power, 33dBc of local oscillator leakage, and 40dBc of the transmit third harmonic component. The transmitter dissipates 10.2mW from a 1.2V supply and the die area of the transmitter is $1.76mm{\times}1.26mm$.
Different biological tissues have different values of electrical resistivity. In EIT (electrical impedance tomography), we try to provide cross-sectional images of a resistivity distribution inside an electrically conducting subject such as the human body mainly for functional imaging. However, it is well known that the image reconstruction problem in EIT is ill-posed and the quality of a reconstructed image highly depends on the measurement error. This requires us to develop a high-performance EIT system. In this paper, we describe the development of a 16-channel digital EIT system including a single constant current source, 16 voltmeters, main controller, and PC. The system was designed and implemented using the FPGA-based digital technology. The current source injects 50KHz sinusoidal current with the THD (total harmonic distortion) of 0.0029% and amplitude stability of 0.022%. The single current source and switching circuit reduce the measurement error associated with imperfect matching of multiple current sources at the expense of a reduced data acquisition time. The digital voltmeter measuring the induced boundary voltage consists of a differential amplifier, ADC, and FPGA (field programmable gate array). The digital phase-sensitive demodulation technique was implemented in the voltmeter to maximize the SNR (signal-to-noise ratio). Experimental results of 16-channel digital voltmeters showed the SNR of 90dB. We used the developed EIT system to reconstruct resistivity images of a saline phantom containing banana objects. Based on the results, we suggest future improvements for a 64-channel muff-frequency EIT system for three-dimensional dynamic imaging of bio-impedance distributions inside the human body.
