In landscape architecture, plants play an important role in realizing the intention of the architect and user- behavior as well as an ecology and appearance of the space for them. However, it is true that many researches have focused on ecological characteristics of plants, their cultivation environment and symbolic meanings in traditional terms, while relatively few for the analysis of the aspects of each period through plants. For this, cherry trees that we often see around are selected and their introduction, propagation, development and symbolism from the view of chronicle are studied and the results are followings; Firstly, three-year seedlings of 1,500 pieces of cherry tree from Osaka and Tokyo were planted for the first time in Oieseongdae, Namsan Park, Seoul. Since then, they had been widely planted at traditional sites, modern parks, newly-constructed roads for street trees, and for this, the Japanese Government-General of Chosun had actively supported by its direct cultivation and selling of cherry trees. The spread of cherry trees planted raised the question of whether or not Prunus yedoensis is originated from Jeju Island. Secondly, such massive and artificial planting of them had become attractions over the time and mass media at that time also had actively promoted it. And such trend made the day and night picnic under the cherry blossoms one of the most representative cultures of enjoying spring in Seoul. Thirdly, although general people enjoyed cherry blossoms, but they had dual view and attitude for cherry trees, which were well expressed in their use of them: for example, cherry blossoms, aeng and sakura were used altogether for same meaning, but night aeng or night picnic under cherry blossoms were especially used instead of yojakura when mentioning just pleasure, which meant some saw night enjoying cherry blossoms a low culture. Fourth, symbolic space of Chosun had been transformed into the space for enjoyment and consumption. Anyone who paid entrance fee could enjoy performance of revugirl, cinema and entertainment along with enjoying cherry blossoms. The still-existing strict differentiation of enjoyment culture by social status, class and ethnicity was dismantled from that trend and brought about a kind of disorder. From this, we could find that cherry blossoms had made a great contribution to the change of traditional enjoyment culture over the Japanese colonial period and become a popular spring enjoyment.

This study is about the paper of Mulberry(桑紙). The paper which was usually applied to the ancient bookpaper and documents. But there is a rare record about it today. So the paper was made from the Mulberry(뽕나무) bast fiber using traditional handcraft method. and Paper Mulberry(닥나무) by traditional method. And tested by physical and optical methods in comparisons with Paper Mulberry(닥나무). The ratio of length/width of Mulberry fiber was 475, and its lignin content was lower than the Paper Mulberry. The Mulberry paper had similar forming properties and physical strength to the Paper Mulberry fiber. Therefore, the Mulberry fiber seem to be a good paper fiber for traditional paper. For the aging test, in the thermal acceleration treatment for 72 hours and 144 hours at the temperature of $105^{\circ}C$ incubator, the Mulberry paper was more deteriorative than the Paper Mulberry. In the ultraviolet acceleration treatment for 100 hours and 200 hours the Mulberry paper was less interior to the Paper Mullberry, in the increase of treatment time. And the Mulberry paper was approved to be a good traditional paper in appearance. Furthumore, in considing the sample of bred Mulberry species grown today, its paper is thought to be superio to the paper of Paper Mulberry in symptom of senility in natural ultraviolet light.

This research has conducted historical data analysis and on-site investigation on Chungam Pavilion and Seokchun Valley in Bonghwa. Based on the results, the original planting form was identified, and the vegetation management were drawn up. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First of all, The Book of Seokchun states that there used to be forest trees such as pine tree, saw-leaf zelkova and maple tree, and flowering trees such as peony, royal azalea, rose, chrysanthemum, and lotus, planted around Chungamjeong. Around Seokchunjeongsa, there used to be boxwood, bamboo, maple, peach, gooseberry and peony planted in the area. Through this discovery it can be realized that the vicinity of Chungam Pavilion and Seokchunjeongsa provided not only the grand aesthetics of four clear seasons, but also planting landscapes with various symbolistic significance and meanings. The description of the planting situation in the historical records offers a useful reference for future vegetation management in Chungam Pavilion, Seokchunjeongsa and surrounding valleys. Furthermore, it holds critical value in the identification of planting pattern in late Chosun dynasty. Second, the planting landscape in and around Chungam Pavilion and Seokchunjeongsa will have to be maintained as described in the historical records The Book of Seokchun. Also, the once famous colony of pine trees in the area is gradually reducing in its scale, which calls for active management measures such as elimination of broadleaf trees.

This study was to evaluate the effects of several light curing units on the microleakage of composite resin restorations in primary teeth. The types of curing units were traditional low intensity halogen light(Optilux 360), plasma arc light(Filpo) low heat plasma arc light(Aurys) and high intensity LED(Freelight 2). After preparing cavities on sound primary teeth, cavities were filled with composite resin(Z100) using the same resin bond agent(Scotchbond Multi-Purpose) and were cured with each curing light system. After storing each specimen in sterile water for 24 hours, thermal circulation was done 1,000 times followed by pigmentation using 2% methylene blue solution. Each specimen was sliced and the degree of pigmentation was graded. When microleakage is graded, the average of Aurys was 0.95 which was the lowest and Freelight 2(1.05), Filpo(1.25), Optilux 360(1.30) followed. But values were not shown statistically significant difference (P>0.05). The results suggest that the newly developed curing units which has advantage in children by decreasing discomfort and procedure time can increase the microleakage of the composite resin.

For this purpose, research was made to look into the style, material, organization, and legal as well as institutional system of the bonsai industry in the three countries. In order to understand what significance it has and how it has changed historically, related literature was surveyed and questionnaires were distributed to the concerned people to collect the data needed for them to plan bonsai industry. The results of the survey are as follows. Analysis of awareness of bonsai culture, respondents replied that the motive and purpose of bonsai is because they like flower trees, and the technical information about bonsai is usually obtained by visits to bonsai gardens. The analysis revealed that respondents usually join more than one bonsai club and are active more than once a month, which means longer than 4 hours each month, and their activities are more frequently in the metropolitan area. From the analysis of preference for bonsai culture, it was made known that the favorite bonsai size is less than middle one(20~50cm), the characteristics of the favorite species are beauty. A research and analysis of bonsai-related technical education found that bonsai is trimmed manually in general, bonsai experts are usually kept in contact with, and the bonsai technique is learned through interaction with the experts.

In making gardens, garden designers establish a principle using specific colors, collect materials, and combine them with their own aesthetic senses. This study is design mothed through the species and characteristics of flowering plants used in the Barrington court created by Gertrude Jekyll and Sissinghurst's white garden created by Vita Sackville-West, both of which are the most renowned gardens that used the white color. The analysis of each individual plant used in the gardens will be based on the season, colors, shapes, plant heights and aromaticity. Through their gardens, how the flowering plants aesthetically united with each other in creating the white gardens will be reviewed. To represent the freshness of spring, Jekyll planted Campanula spp. and Lilium spp. in the garden. Vita Sackvill-West aims at the moonlight in a summer night and features Delphinium spp., Rosa mulliganii, and R. longicuspis. The color of the flowers is in white, varying from pure white, ivory and silver. To prevent monotony due to monocolor flowers, the forms of the flowers are intense. To make white flowers look better, the colors of leaves include light green, light gray and bright and greenish yellow. Overall, cool colors are used to give a mystique, coolness, cleanness and to produce an fascinating and plaintive atmosphere, getting joined with white flowers and reflected light in the night. The White Garden has made significance in the history of landscape architecture: it was the starting point of garden design through theme colors, based on the idea and technology of planting design methods that discover the potential of colors and withdraw limits. And it also made a significant contribution to the advancement of garden art with combinations by aesthetic principles.

Old-growth and giant tree is a nonrenewable resource with great value. The purpose of this study is to provide scientific and reasonable evaluations for the preservation and management of the old-growth and giant tree. Until now the research of old-growth and giant tree's value evaluation and authoritative index is so insufficient and imperfection. Combining with the particularity of the old-growth and giant tree, this study analyzed the main value factors of the old-growth and giant tree and objectively selected the evaluation indicators. According to the actual situation value appraisal model of the old-growth and giant tree was builded. The main value factors can be divided into economic value, cultural history, growing place, tree state, tree form, tree vigor, protection level, growth environment, tree species, tree canopy, and so on. The evaluate indicators can be selected and the indicators' weight can be calculate using analytic hierarchy process methods(AHP). Based on economic value and indicators' weight, tree's total value can be revealed. After calculation and analysis, Gyeongju Gyerim Zelkova serrata's value evaluation results is 491,503,300 won. The research results of this study can provide scientific basis and reference to the old-growth and giant trees' value appraisal and loss compensation, and arouse people's environmental awareness.
Five waterlogged wood artefacts were excavated from Suyeong-ri site in Hwaseong, South Korea. The aim of the present study was to identify the species and estimate the date of manufacture and the manufacturing method of these artefacts. The study also aimed to conserve the original shapes of waterlogged wood artefacts by using the vacuum freeze drying method. The two large waterlogged woods were identified as Ulmus spp. and Morus spp., whereas one of the three small waterlogged woods was identified as Abies spp. and the other two as hard pine. Radiocarbon dating using wiggle match dated the manufacturing of these wooden artefacts between BCE 8520-8490 or BCE 8470-8290 in the Neolithic age, and a similar period was also confirmed for seed excavated from a place close to the location where the waterlogged wood artefacts were excavated. The surface of waterlogged wood artefacts had several traces of manufacturing processes - traces of tearing and chopping - were observed. Based on these observations, it was confirmed that stone adz was used to make these wooden artefacts. Thereafter, the waterlogged wood samples were conserved by immersing them into PEG#4,000 of concentration in water from 10% to 40% at room temperature(15~25℃) and subjecting them to vacuum freeze drying. However, the internal moisture was not completely removed in some thick parts of waterlogged woods by applying the general schedule such as raising the shelf temperature as the surface temperature rises. Therefore, additional study is required using the schedule-method for vacuum freeze drying of large waterlogged wood.
In this study, to conserve the clay seated Vairocana Buddha triad in Seonunsa temple, Gochang (Treasure 1752), the primary materials employed for creating the clay Buddha statues were scientifically analyzed. By analyzing the soil layer constituting the Buddha statues, it is observed that the said layer comprises sand having particle size greater than that of medium sand and soil having particle size smaller than that of fine sand, which were used in a ratio of 7:3, along with the bast fibers of paper mulberry (Broussonetia kazinoki). Hence, the aforementioned soil layer is composed of a mixture of sand and weathered soil, along with bast fibers to prevent scattering. By analyzing the tree species, it is found that the wooden materials constituting the bottom board and the interior of Buddha's sleeves of the Amitabha Buddha statue, Vairocana Buddha statue, and Medicine Buddha statue are hard pines (Pinus spp.). Additionally, three layers are found in the cross section of the gold layer. Furthermore, each of the hair sections of the Buddha statues is composed of earthy materials such as quartz, albite, microcline, mica, and magnetite, and the hair surface was painted by incorporating black materials containing magnetite.

The study was done to analyze the records of planting time of Gwangneung needle firs referring to the historical literatures, the Annals of Joseon Dynasty(朝鮮王朝實錄), Seungjeongwonilgi(承政院日記: Journal of the Royal Secretariat). Bibyeonsadeungnok(備邊司謄錄: Records of the Bibyeonsa Defense Council, a government agency during the Joseon Dynasty), Ilseongnok(日省錄: Journal on Dynasty affairs of the kings in the 36th year of Youngjo to 1910) to lay the historical ground for needle firs in Gwangneung. The following results were derived from previous research, Report on Gwangneung Forest Ecosystem, and overlaid fir tree rings. The research findings are as follow. First, since the system of making the grave is the most conservative system, the planting during the Gwangneung construction would have been preceded by precedent. Second, the problem of cutting the tree in the late Joseon Dynasty became serious. It is published the Law of Muo In the 22nd year of Jeongjo, and then planted trees regularly in spring and autumn. Third, the Law of Muo was preserved for 31 years during the reign of King Gojong, and the type of specific tree, the number of trees, from the 22nd year until the 25th year of King Gojong, four years of fir trees were planted in Gwangneung, and Gwangneung was the only place where korean pine trees were planted. Fourth, it was possible to identify the age of the tree through fallen fir tree rings, and the period of planting fir trees growing in the existing mausoleum is judged to be the equivalent year of King Gojong's reign from the 10th year of King Cheoljong's reign.
